  • Between obnoxious social media, hostile work environments, weird forced updates, and saying the quiet part out loud about how this is all about monetization, the latest edition of Dungeons and Dragons, combined with how Hasbro has been strangling its golden goose for the past couple of years, has ruffled a lot of feathers.
    Especially mine.

D&D is now just the term I use to explain to people that I play TTRPGs. I actually play ICRPG and other more simplistic RPG systems because it's about storytelling and not statistics.

About the obnoxious social media posts: That IS the dnd5 design mentality. Throw DM's under the bus so they need to homebrew almost everything for the game to be fun for them. Even BG3 does heavy homebrewing to the system just to use it.
That is what I don't like about fifth edition, it does not pull any wieghts to make my life easier as the narrator.

"Talk about inflation all you want" well yeah, you have to. Price is the only point you make here that misses - $25 in 1994 IS $50 today. And those $20 guidebooks would cost $35-40 today. Books today cost the same as they did in 2nd Edition when you adjust for 30 years' worth of inflation!
But yes, that was a problem back then, too - people unable to keep up with the torrent of AD&D book releases was why TSR stopped making money, enabling WOTC to take over. They printed more books than players were willing to buy.

I don't understand why any of the books are so expensive. When the competition is free, it never helps to be expensive.

@@OnibroPathfinder has its entire ruleset available for free using Archives of Nethys, a free and officially supported website. Lancer's player-facing book is free and you can technically play using this book as a GM, though that would be a bit complicated. ICON, a fantasy derivative of Lancer, is currently available for free as it's being playtested and will likely follow Lancer model after release. And mind you, that's just games that play like DnD. If you go into general TTRPGs, there's an even bigger amount of free, PWYW or immeasurably cheaper than DnD games.

      Baring that in mind,
They’ll likely never actually sell me on another book.
I have what i needed, and they can’t stop me from playing with just those from here on out.
Hundreds of pages I haven’t even used yet,
So why fork over more cash for an update?
      Let them update,
But it wont change whats in the books and our ability to play with what already is, and it wont give WoTC the ability to force more unnecessary products and updates on you.
      They can try,
But so long as you don’t buy,
      Its ineffective

I've for the last few years turned to 2nd Edition Cyberpunk 2020 to scratch my tabletop itch and I'm looking at homebrewing that system to adapt it into a Fear and Hunger style game since it already has a lot of ability to be a brutal meatgrinder of a game

You give a ton of ideas that they will ignore, but I'm listening for my own games.
One of the biggest issues is 5e is so streamlined, that what would be in 3.5 a whole setting with full classes and spells, becomes a booklet with 3 subcoasses and a few backgrounds. It's the difference between lego having many studs, and those one blocks with one stud each. There's not enough complexity for things to plug into.
Not saying 5e is bad, it's great. It's also simple enough to fit into 3 books and accessible enough for anyone to learn quickly. It's not the type for continuous additions of high pricepoints. Unlike 3.5, where when it ended ppl basically just unofficially continued it with great success.
It's also one of the great things about Pathfinder 2e. It's so modular, that you can put any pieces together, like a card game.
Guess a better comparison would be Barbie and Yu-Gi-Oh. Both are customizable, but a new set of clothes isn't gonna cost as much as a new set of boosters. You can't have the simplicity and complexity at the same time.

Man I remember when the complete lack of recurrent monetization was the fucking selling point
I kept getting told the entire cost to play is $40 for a book and paper then you can borrow the expansions from our DM who has a hookup for less than half price books somehow
Now it feels like it's a game about spending money.
I ended up not liking the game, it's just not for me, but looking back at what it's become, as someone who only played three sessions I can already see how much of a dumpsterfire Wizards is and they're ruining D&D. The fans need to make a free open system similar to what Onepagerules did for 40k and use that instead of D&D when making custom monsters and classes and whatnot. Who knows maybe they'll make a game that's actually fun

They need to normalize cheap disposable modules again. Those ones not printed on heavy stock glossy paper. Where you were expected to pull it apart, mark it up with notes. Pack in those pull out maps or inserts you can pass out to players. Something functional at the table.

You say ignoring inflation, but keeping inflation into account, 30.00 in 2003 is actually about 51.28 today. So today's Handbook is about the same price as 3.5. Now, if it still feels overpriced that's different, but you have a false comparison. And comparing with the AD&D probably is an even better savings!
And yes, I do agree that not every book needs to be premium hardcover - having options is good!

    • @Kohdok
      @Kohdok หลายเดือนก่อน +7

That's actually a recent thing. $30 in 2003 was worth ~$38 in 2014 when the books initially dropped.
The $50 today is a lowball price because they expect to benefit from microtransactions on top of it.

I don’t know where you’re getting that D&D is life support for Hasbro. According to the Hasbro 2023 annual report, their Consumer Products division earned $2.8 billion. The Wizards of the Coast & Digital Gaming division earned $1.4 billion.
And in the part where they separate out Hasbro Gaming from the rest of their products, they mention Magic and Monopoly as the standouts, not D&D.

Paladin looking for friends seems BS to me honestly, everything else is fine, but I really really don't think that Paladin look for friends, sure it can happen, but typically their objective should have the highest priority, and a friend is not part of that, being honorable instead is because it's in the code
