I've been crocheting and knitting for years now and obviously different craft but wow do I not know what you're saying at all. I came here to replicate the star with crochet, and stayed for your mesmerizing work!
@zangetsu284 it's a whole new world out there in bobbin lace!! Just as fascinating as knitting and crochet, but still comprising of 2 basic stitches which you build up into pattern.. have a watch at some of the beginners ones to draw you into it more and that will make more sense.
Thanks for this tutorial. I have ordered the pattern and am thinking of making Christmas tree baubles and some for card embellishments. I have made lace but feel I need your videos to follow. In the setting up of the outer trail I think I could use a coloured thread for all the passives and not just the gold threads. I have even been thinking of using derwent ink paints to colour in the star and buds.
@@sued.5698 Its great that you feel adventurous enough to experiment in this way, hope to see the results. I am just filming the Christmas tree bauble off this year's Christmas designs, but it will be a little while before it is available. I will probably get the trio bauble out first as it is slightly easier to work and film.
Love watching you on youtube but looking forward to taking a class in person!
Always happy to see a new Louise video! 💖

Does your bead covered bobbins add much weight for my bobbins don't have holes to spangle and I like the look and thought might give my bobbins some extra weight?
I havent weighed them before and after beading, but they dont seem to add too much weight, they do make the bobbin thicker and slightly chunkier, but that can be an advantage if the bobbin is thin. Some people just use them for the gimp threads, for the heavier thread and also to be able to spot them in the sea of bobbins. Hope that helps.
@@LouiseWestLace Thank you Louise. My bobbins are thin so glad to hear the beads will be beneficial and of course pretty. I was thinking I might figure out a way to use the beads at the end to hang a spangle, all in good timing. I have other WIPS to get accomplish first.
Hi Louise, Have you got a tutorial of the heart shape part. I've found the tutorial for the finish but not any for the heart shapes?
Thanks I am enjoying watching your videos
I have just started learning lace and I can understand some things like remove pair 😔 how do I do that please
@@leegrannells4009 I’m not sure what you mean, how do you do what - remove a pair?
Çok güzel ellerinize sağlık. Ben Türkiye’de nasıl öğrenebilirim acaba 🙏
This seems like an important skill! I'll keep on practicing this as I learn more about the techniques in general. Practicing both my stitches and moving the pattern as I go. I have a very small window where I can comfortably work before the lace is either too far away or practically in my lap, so I might have to move even quite small patterns around a bit on my pillow. Following your guidance I did manage to move my simple practice lace a good few centimeter around on my pillow though, and it still looks fresh! Looking forward to trying a more complicated pattern and doing the same process.
Sehr gut erklärt 👍
Late to the party, but oh this is so useful! Thank you!
Believe it or not... I'm gonna try with with knitting wool. I've been looking for something out of the ordinary to use various silk and wool yarns I bought this year, after having unplied them to single strands (steaming not only removes the kinks, but 'cooks in' the twist needed to keep it from being simply fluff). There are many ways to knit lace, but this pattern here looks like it would be rewarding - even if a failure, to attempt.
@Norfolk250 no reason why you can't, as long as the yarn is the correct thickness for the scale of the pattern. You just have to experiment with enlarging the pattern. And be mindful that the single strand may well not have the strength of plied yarn when it comes to tensioning. Good luck, would love to see the results.

Gracias

I bought the design online from the Russian designer.
23:25 “…don’t want the video to be too long, then you switch off…” Never! I hang on every stitch and every word.
Can't thank you enough! I have tried for so long to 'get' valleys. Using your book (and this video), I can now, for the first time just work along. I don't have to have a printout marking off with pins where I am and how many to go out and come in. I'd love to tell you I have not made a mistake, but I understood the mistake and was able to reverse lace and fix it.
@missread7781 that's fantastic news, well done for sticking with it.. that's lots of progress.
Excellent tutorial 👏
This was straightforward and easy to understand. Thank you for this!
21:16 “Sometimes when you’ve been doing it a long while, like I have, you say one thing and your brain does the correct thing” Couldn’t have said it better. I have that problem every time I teach. Particularly in ballet class. Sometime I wonder if the class thinks I’ve gone off my rocker.
I have been appreciating the sounds of bobbin lace making for some time now. I just heard a new sound I had never noticed before 3:44 . That stringy twang of the picot being tugged into tension is fabulous. I’m going to keep my ears peeled for that sound next time I’m listening to a lace maker working. I was previously unaware this edge treatment had a name. I know I have seen it my whole life, most notably in Elizabethan and Jacobean portraiture, if I’m not mistaken. I must remember the 9 pin edging. Thank you for showing us.
What kind of card stock is the brown cardboard you buy to make patterns?
I love all your videos. Thank you. I tried to buy books on your website. It would not let me. 😢. Love your work.
That's very strange.. I'll look when I get back to my computer. The books are stocked by suppliers in the UK and US if ypu need to buy before then.
I was able to do 4-5 passes (27 yards, #5) to fill the four bobbins (2 pr) I've also seen another you-tuber and a book "The Bobbin Lace Manuel", winding in the opposite direction? Will it matter with the slip knot...
Thanks for the comment. For everything there is more than one way of doing it! Some people wind in the opposite direction, sometimes because they are left handed, sometimes because that's the way they were taught and maybe their teacher was left handed. The main thing is consistency, and not winding one bobbin one direction and the other in the opposite direction. If you wind the opposite direction then the hitch will need to be in the opposite direction as well, otherwise it is likely to keep slipping. The quantity of thread very much depends on the pattern you are making, but you can replace threads when they run out and it isn't essential (in most cases) to have enough on without joining. Hope that helps.
Thanks for showing the process as you do it (and at a speed I can keep up with!) including the partying bobbins. I picked an ambitious first project and the tutorial is wonderfully helpful to help me understand the fans especially. 💛
I've watched about a dozen or so of bobbin lace tutorials and you're the first one says how many stitches you need for something! No joke. Tension makes a huge difference so knowing the ideal number is really important, if you ask me. Am I missing something?
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I've been struggling to get my roseground to look right for a couple of days and this has been a total eureka moment for me. Fantastic clear and concise demonstration
❤❤❤
I use this idea for knitting patterns as well. I color patterns, i.e., k2tog etc a different color.
I don't think it's tedious to watch something when you have switch directions. I wish you had not shut off the camera so soon, I need to see more of the new diagonal to the right method.
What do you do with the leftover thread?
Alot depends on how much you have left, the bobbins with a lot of thread on here were probably used again for the next bookmark, by pulling an amount off and rewinding on the second bobbin. If it is a short amount then it can be used for other creative textiles (free machine embroidery, felt making, stuffing pin cushions etc) or thrown away. The materials for this craft are relatively small compared to many crafts... how long does a 900m reel of thread at £8 last you?
ninepins are skittles.... it's not the pins in the patterns, it's a skittle edging.
@louisewest1150 well, 56 years ago when my grandmother taught me to make it when I was 4, she called it a ninepins edging... and conversations with many other lacemakers has not given me a different explanation that holds water. Traditional UK skittles ate 'sugar-loaf shaped, not bottle shaped, so th4 shape matches too...
Very interesting, I have done a lot of research into the history and that's something new. I wish Barbara Underwood was still alive to ask her, she would have been learning about the same time as you, from Mrs Miller and perhaps it was something she would have known of.
Thank you. I am just starting out with bobbin lace, and was winding it wrong.
Thank you, I have been struggling with some of these things and your channel seems to answer every question I have. Much love
Great video, great help. Thank you
You're welcome!
Gosh, three clear demos and all so much easier than the piece of paper my tutor gave me (no demo!). Thank you.
Glad it helped!
