How to work Bedfordshire Christmas tree motif 2024 design (in Bobbin Lace)
This video shows step by step instructions to get started and progress through the new motif for Christmas 2024.
The video covers starting, adding pairs, working a trail in both directions, using a glitter pair as a passive pair, working half stitch buds with beads added, progressing down the design, throwing out pairs and finishing at the hanging loop.
A longer video for lacemakers who like to watch the whole piece (although a bit of the repetitive stuff cut out in the middle!)

I love the sound of the spools moving. Not sure of you call them that sorry. I used to do bobbin lace and I loved this sound then as well, so relaxing. Took me right back. Thank you! Edit: I guess they’re called bobbins, aren’t they? 😅
@@nanabella007 yes they are called bobbins, hence bobbin lace 😉 maybe it’s tempted you to have another go?
Stunning! I hope to take a beds lace class someday, it's such a gorgeous style!

@@M-TGram thank you, I enjoy doing this small pieces
Hello I really like your videos explaining Torchon lace how can I buy these pricking in particular your set of 4 bookmarks
@@joanlafferty8910 thanks for the comment. There’s a link on the video to the patterns, which are for sale through my website. Thanks for watching. If you subscribe you’ll hear when new videos are uploaded.
I have seen many ways tallies are made. My lace teacher taught us to do them holding the bobbins in both hands without laying them. It was difficult at the start but very rewarding after much practice.
@annacodagnone2109 that's great that you make them that way, it's often the way you are first taught that you use, it still achieves the same result.
I am so happy to meet you on this channel. I am a lacemaker of pizzo di Cantù, I am approaching to torchon, I bought some years ago some books about Bedfordshire lace and I was enchanted by the continuity of those beautiful patterns and I am happy to see how to work on them. Thank you very much.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you Louise and merry Christmas!! I have learned so much from your channel this year, i started bobbin lace in the summer and you have been a go to for tutorials, an absolute legend! Thank you so much!!
Merry Christmas and have a wonderful New Year! I enjoy your teaching and the learning opportunities you share. What a blessing you are! Shemene
Happy New Year🎉
Same to you too❤
I love your videos. They’ve been so helpful as I’ve been teaching myself bobbin lace. I know you’ve gone over in others videos a little on how to read patterns and coloring them in. I was wondering on patterns that come with no instructions how do your figure out how many bobbins to use and what stitches to use.
Hello and happy Christmas, Louise! I was so happy to be able to meet you and take a class with you in person this year! Your videos and books have been so helpful to me in my lacemaking journey, and I’m looking forward to whatever you have up your sleeve in 2025!! -Kristen from Virginia
@@MrsWmson sometimes things take a surprising direction, you just never know.. planning only works some of the time!
Thank you Louise! You've inspired me since I "bumped into" bobbin lace by chance. My learning journey is slow (and far too late in life!) but thoroughly enjoyable, and something that keeps me going through tough times. Thank you for your clear and thorough videos. A question? Maybe you could give us newbies some things to consider when working to progress... I've been muddling around and now hit on the idea that I'd like to make a bobbin lace wedding garter for a friend. I know that I can probably produce something in a haphazard fashion, but I'm wondering if there is a better path to follow to become really confident, and creative! (other than some of the books for beginners) What do you recommend we get proficient at, and in what order? Wishing you a very blessed Christmas season from Portugal 🇵🇹 🙏 ✨️
@GeraldineMFarinha-Ferreira thanks for the question, I'm intending talking about design at some point in the videos. I think you perhaps need to look out for the garter pattern that speaks to you, then break down what techniques it includes. If there are techniques you aren't familiar with, look for an easier pattern to practice the techniques and build on it. A case of finding what you want to aim for and then working out the steps to get there. That will be different for everyone depending on your previous experience. Any particular techniques let me know.
@LouiseWestLace Thank you Louise! I haven't found any garter patterns with instructions as yet, and someone recommended that I use a torchon sampler and extend it to yardage. I'm thinking of giving that a try 😊
@@GeraldineMFarinha-Ferreira very often garters are often an edging that has been mirrored and joined with rings down the middle for ribbon/elastic.. sometimes it’s not too difficult to do this if you have a favourite edging.
Merry Christmas and Happy 2025! For an interview idea, please include how you got the idea for your laser prickings, how it got started (I recall a fundraiser) and how it is doing today.
@@anitahansen5559 thanks for the question..

Nice Word where I can get the Pattern???
It is available through my website shop, at Louise West lace design. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you for such an informative video, hopefully one day I will have the skills to make a piece like this! ❤
Thank you so much Queen! I've been stitching through my Bucks Point workbook and I just love your patterns and instruction. Truly making lace accessible!
Love watching you work! I am a baby lace maker and don't have that many bobbins, yet. Wonderfully work and I love the long-form content
I am fascinated by lace making, I can understand why lace was pricier than gold now. Amazingly complicated and beautiful. I do like the long videos. I’m very much a novice, I own just 12 pairs of bobbins so I’ve only practiced with grounds, spider and edges. Saving for a better pillow and more bobbins now.
@@raysunshine830 whereabouts are you in the world, often if you are near a group, they will sell really cheaply second hand bobbins/pillows to get new people going..
Thanks Louise for another lovely video. I like the longer videos and putting the chapters in will help others skip to the relevant sections. A beautiful butterfly.
@sued.5698 it just takes so long to do a complete piece of lace, as I have to work the whole piece as well as filming and then quite a few hours editing. But pleased you enjoyed it.
As l have sent this video, l will get the pattern as l tend to need a lot of help when l do some of these projects. 👋🇦🇺😊
Oh my gosh! This is so, so beautiful!! I might give this a go for my mum who loves butterflies <3
Where get that modle?
The pattern is in the book "Bucks Point Lace Workbook* with instructions. It is also available as a ready to work - ready pricked pattern, in a pack with patterns 1,2 and 4 also in the pack, but these are to complement the book and don't come with instructions.
I've been crocheting and knitting for years now and obviously different craft but wow do I not know what you're saying at all. I came here to replicate the star with crochet, and stayed for your mesmerizing work!
@zangetsu284 it's a whole new world out there in bobbin lace!! Just as fascinating as knitting and crochet, but still comprising of 2 basic stitches which you build up into pattern.. have a watch at some of the beginners ones to draw you into it more and that will make more sense.
Thanks for this tutorial. I have ordered the pattern and am thinking of making Christmas tree baubles and some for card embellishments. I have made lace but feel I need your videos to follow. In the setting up of the outer trail I think I could use a coloured thread for all the passives and not just the gold threads. I have even been thinking of using derwent ink paints to colour in the star and buds.
@@sued.5698 Its great that you feel adventurous enough to experiment in this way, hope to see the results. I am just filming the Christmas tree bauble off this year's Christmas designs, but it will be a little while before it is available. I will probably get the trio bauble out first as it is slightly easier to work and film.
Love watching you on youtube but looking forward to taking a class in person!

Does your bead covered bobbins add much weight for my bobbins don't have holes to spangle and I like the look and thought might give my bobbins some extra weight?
I havent weighed them before and after beading, but they dont seem to add too much weight, they do make the bobbin thicker and slightly chunkier, but that can be an advantage if the bobbin is thin. Some people just use them for the gimp threads, for the heavier thread and also to be able to spot them in the sea of bobbins. Hope that helps.
@@LouiseWestLace Thank you Louise. My bobbins are thin so glad to hear the beads will be beneficial and of course pretty. I was thinking I might figure out a way to use the beads at the end to hang a spangle, all in good timing. I have other WIPS to get accomplish first.
Hi Louise, Have you got a tutorial of the heart shape part. I've found the tutorial for the finish but not any for the heart shapes?
Thanks I am enjoying watching your videos
I have just started learning lace and I can understand some things like remove pair 😔 how do I do that please
@@leegrannells4009 I’m not sure what you mean, how do you do what - remove a pair?
Çok güzel ellerinize sağlık. Ben Türkiye’de nasıl öğrenebilirim acaba 🙏
This seems like an important skill! I'll keep on practicing this as I learn more about the techniques in general. Practicing both my stitches and moving the pattern as I go. I have a very small window where I can comfortably work before the lace is either too far away or practically in my lap, so I might have to move even quite small patterns around a bit on my pillow. Following your guidance I did manage to move my simple practice lace a good few centimeter around on my pillow though, and it still looks fresh! Looking forward to trying a more complicated pattern and doing the same process.
Sehr gut erklärt 👍
Late to the party, but oh this is so useful! Thank you!
Believe it or not... I'm gonna try with with knitting wool. I've been looking for something out of the ordinary to use various silk and wool yarns I bought this year, after having unplied them to single strands (steaming not only removes the kinks, but 'cooks in' the twist needed to keep it from being simply fluff). There are many ways to knit lace, but this pattern here looks like it would be rewarding - even if a failure, to attempt.
@Norfolk250 no reason why you can't, as long as the yarn is the correct thickness for the scale of the pattern. You just have to experiment with enlarging the pattern. And be mindful that the single strand may well not have the strength of plied yarn when it comes to tensioning. Good luck, would love to see the results.
Oh que votre travail est magnifique ! j'apprends beaucoup de points, je vais vous suivre, vous expliquez très bien c'est un bonheur, merci merci et à bientôt.
