1 reason to make a dual boot system. Because my wife is doing this the last 15 years. Windows with full Adobe CS and disabled NIC. Ubuntu for the Net and mounting the NTFS is necessary. Free Software is Open Source Software. But Open Source Software is not always Free Software.
excellent video. Helped me out tons combined with a couple of other sources for arch distribution.
Mate Compiz is Good
Hi linuxort do you have email i want to contact you
You sound like jack maa, 😅😅
Nice channel, thanks. More Debian please.
After Microsoft Windows 22H2 End of software support they will be forcefully ask the users to pay to use windows 11 22H2. Then going to any Linux distro is a best choice.
The Ubuntu and Debian versions of Gnome are much more user friendly. Ubuntu even more so at it has it's own extensions. Although many of the Ubuntu software such as the Startup Applications Settings Manager works on Debian. Nautilus is not so user friendly. Also Gnome have hidden the link to the Computer folder in Nautilus in Gnome 47. Though there are ways to get it back. One alternative is to use Nemo or Caja which you can install on Gnome and set as the default file manager. Nautilus will still be on the system as you cannot remove it. But your files will open in either Nemo or Caja. Depending on which one you install. Nemo also had the added advantage of being able to draw the desktop icons. So you don't need to use Gnome Extensions to get the desktop icons if you use Nemo. You also won't have to deal with Nautilus anymore. Nemo and Caja are much better file managers. Cinnamon and Mate desktops are really alternative versions of Gnome but with the more traditional Windows 7 style desktop. I think most ex-Windows users prefer that. I know I do.
I use GNOME, and have a few Gnome Extensions installed to make it a little more usable.
Fedora 41 Final is released, and it's working great for me. Upgraded from 40 without any issues
Great overview! I don't see Flatpak on a decline, but with Fedora, most of the time there won't be the need to choose a Flatpak over RPM since they keep all the software very up-to-date in their repos. Sometimes even faster than FlatHub. And DNF5 is really a huge leap forward in terms of speed as well. But yes, with Fedora, you have to dist-upgrade often, which can almost feel like running a rolling distro. With Mint, you have to do this much less, and if you want current version of some software, you can always install the Flatpak, or even use a PPA. I'm still not sure which approach I prefer, but there's a place and an audience for all of them for sure.
I have no issue with Teamviewer and wayland (Ubuntu 24)
Having installed it, I lost window resizing in the settings app as well as some other GNOME apps. Anyone else had this happen?
I believe it's the full version not a beta.
I had the beta but yes, now the Fedora 41 Version is released :)
I installed it yesterday and it was smooth. Nvidia works well on nouveau nvk drivers but excepts when it comes to gaming things turn out differently. Wayland wasn't the issue with me here. The proprietary is still king on gaming side while it stutters a lot for overall desktop use. And wayland support is way worse. I hope i can see NVK's progress go smoothly.
I loving Fedora, after tested it, I changed my main desktop from Arch Linux to Fedora. Its super fast and stable. Even got more FPS on games than Arch
After installing nvidia driver i cannot open any apps😢😢 in fedora 41
@Rahul-ce9yz did you enable kernel mod setting ?I don't know if this is still true, used Nvidia in the past. Now I use Amd, because AMD in Linux everything is automatically and works these days. Try setting kernel mod set, also in Fedora wiki says to enroll the Nvidia drivers to the UEFI keys
Fedora has a lot of different "spins" so you can hardly generalize things like not shipping X11. The Cinnamon Spin does! My absolute favorite Linux distro! (It would be suicide to ditch X11 because Wayland has terrible Nvidia support)
I'm using wayland with Nvidia for couple of months now, even playing games on steam! No major issues so far. Sometime just Telegram desktop app crashes. :( otherwise, everything is fine for me.
Fedora is firstly known for their gnome (and maybe KDE) desktop. Both of them have no X11 anymore. This is what the video is about. Also as mentioned in the video x11 for gnome is still in the repositories.. KDE Plasma 6 has no X11 support at all on fedora.
@@LinuxOrt I was just pointing out for people who cant use wayland or dont like the official mobile-esque gnome that there are different options. Cinnamon features a fork of the classic gnome shell which in my opinion is way more productive and faster. It's Linux Mint but with Fedora under the hood.
Desktop much more stable for me though not perfect.
What did you discover that's complaining?
Tumbleweed is much more bleeding, today is 6.12.rc5, and it is the most stable OS I ever used.
I think the whole point with Fedora is to be at the edge but not bleeding edge for productivity and stability reasons.
They are both leading edge. They go through intense CI-CO testing. Arch is the only bleeding edge and thats mainly BC they don't test as much as openSUSE or Fedora
@@n.m4497 Yea, using arch without snapshots and rollbacks etc is a nightmare and I'm just not the kind of guy who likes to deal with all of this. Just hit update and no worries is my thing.
Great that it is "much more faster"
Instead of using Remmina could you use Microsoft Remote Desktop on a Mac?
Hallo Jean, thx for this really good Video for introduce Fedora in Version of 41. Is it possible to use the Linux Asistant for it already? Im looking foreward already for the next Video.
Linux-Assistat will support fedora again with it's next update :)
Fedora is really awesome and bleeding edge but not for workstations... For developers and gamers its perfect
I wouldn't say it's 'bleeding' edge, because it's components are tested well. Arch is more to 'bleeding' edge :)
linux assistant does not work withe the 32 bit version of debian
Thanks for this video! - Danke
Good job!
I can't thank you enough for this video! Your explanation made it so easy and how an instructional video should be produced. Great job! From Nevada USA.
I already had switch to Linux, first it was Ubuntu (which is very good) then arch after a while, "I use arch btw" but the first time a switched to Linux i kinda regretted it because i was missing my old window programs like visual studio, but I couldn't switch back because i didn't realize this laptop had a bios password and i had no idea how to remove it at the time, but the longer i use it, the more i loved it, even in windows i was using the Linux stuff for programming and love it, If you on windows and you thinking of switching to Linux, i think it worth it if your a programmer and/or really wanna customize every part of your pc
It was very helpful! Thanks a lot!
One Reason not to switch, maybe. You have decades of on going work using Windows Programs. However, that can easily be overcome with a sufficient computer using Oracle Box. I use Oracle Box to run Windows in Windows.
i remain unconvinced. When I used linux in 2011 briefly, I did not feel much benefit in its use, and felt a ton of negatives in the form of program compatibility. I just don't have a reason to care about efficiency, when computers are so powerful in 2024. Linux remains a toy for tech enthusiasts and paranoid security minded individuals at best.
One feature alone makes Linux worthwhile for me: Even on Windogs-Installations for corporations, I have to update the system every second day or so. And it takes a long time every time. And often the system must be restarted. On Linux, a typical update that takes 5 minutes in Windogs at least, will take less than 10 seconds and no reboot is required for 99% even of system updates. I can run Linux boxes for months without need for restart. When you are fine that Redmond is spying on you and potentially using your data even against you. When you are fine, being the product and not the buyer of a product. Than fine. But than you bought A TOY OPERATING SYSTEM and others are toying with you!
So more than 10 years ago you tried Linux for a day then gave up. And since you work at Taco Bell, you do not care about security... No need to be paranoid about your IP or banking details. Good for you! Let Co-Pilot guide you to the "Microsoft Store" with every click you make.
@@GregMoresssome of us choose windows for ease of use and less hassle with compatibility. Everyone is not a tinkerer which in linux you pretty much have to be one
I guess I'd ask someone who said this about 2011 Linux *and* Windows/ digital life, what changes they'd noticed in 13 years? Because back then, Windows 7 didn't send telemetry, iPhones and social media/ data harvesting were really new, and technically Linux was.... um, challenging. Moving to present day, how do you/we judge if we need to be concerned about say, a really basic level of privacy? Is it "normal" to give over all your data to others? I think that's okay if you want to. But does it feel okay that you have no choice about it?
Well with Windows you must 'tinker' with secret settings, such as "How to disable Cortana", or "How to disable Co-Pilot", or "How to prevent auto-uploading your files to the Microsoft Cloud"
The substance of what you're saying is interesting, but what's the point of making a TH-cam video if you're going to show virtually nothing visually as you talk?... like not even the bullet points of your presentation?!
Even to take the thumbnail and have that unblur as he covered the points. This feels more like a podcast
TH-cam has far better audience reach than any sort of audio only content delivery methods. I personally don't think it matters all that much, plenty of people go to youtube to listen to podcasts and music on videos with no actual video at all.
@@MrAusdrifter I agree on both counts!
@@Domebuddy What you say makes sense, but the thrust of my point (which maybe wasn't as clear as I wanted it to be) wasn't that he shouldn't make a video; it was that he *should* make a video on this topic, but that it should be a better, more engaging video.
I have a question, did you download Rufus to your external usb? Or did you download it to Windows?
Also for you gamers: if you have a separate hard-drive or extra disk space to partition off, you can implement a dual booting option. I use this option when booting up my pc and choose between running windows for gaming and Linux for the rest. A bit of a learning curve to set up but well worth it.
Gaming works absolutely fine on Linux with Steam. If you have your games on Steam, there's no need whatsoever for dual boot. Een no-Steam games like WoW or Star Citizen run smoothly with Lutris. I play WoW, Star Citizen, Cyberpunk, Arma III, DayZ and a couple of other games with no issues.
Same, but most of my games now run faster on Linux than windows. (Unless a specific game is unsupported.). I have less and less reasons to boot into windows recently.
@@tomgier8548 I prefer Heroic Launcher to Lutris, but yeah, you're on point.
You sti need to tinker with proton, lutris, wine,it does not just work
@@roklaca3138 Most games run out of a box fine since the steam deck released. But you can tinker to make the experience better. Sometimes you have to wait for proton to be updated for very new games.
hey can anyone here tell me if you need ethernet for this instalation , or you can setup wifi in the install part?
Thank you it worked. An update went bad or something and it wouldn't accept my password. You saved me hours of reinstalling everything.
timeshift is almost lost of time and storage ... backup is better and it is reliable... vorta or pikabackup are nice apps...
Your are a life saver ❤
What should i do if it says /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades Prompt is set to never so upgrading is not possible.?
Thank you!
"Linux Ort" is one amazing teacher. Further, his Linux-Assistant package is every bit as good as he implies. It's certainly helpful, and he's right to recommend that any Linux user install it. The English is amazingly good in the videos, but the package could do with a spell-check ["separatly"] and a little something further, because there is at least a little in it that isn't clear - just due to translation issues, I think. But it's clear that there are a lot of people who decided years ago "I don't need Linux" who would likely reconsider if they simply viewed one or more of the creator's videos. "Five stars" - if that's the highest possible rating!
I use Fedora Gnome, but I would like use Debian Gnome because its philosophy is amazing, but I cant because I need updated app😢
No thanks. It's a shame KeePassXC is resorting to promoting this scam instead of doing their job: storing passwords securely. I guess reliable password managers will become harder to find the more the passkey infection spreads.
how do i remove it?
Thanks!
who doesn't have a Tb drive?? I mean this is not 2014
So if you loose your keypass database you're locked out of everything?
No it's an option to login faster, mostly services give you "no reach out passkeys" option.
Exactly!
I did everything but it says could not find host! should we create a server first? how to do that please?
i installed gnome on Mint to my old sony vaio with 4gb ram, it was great, i love gnome for its simplicity n i use keyboard to navigate faster, n its very different n faster esp using XDM to download from certain sites which always failed on other Linux distros, till next 4 days later, it went freezed, tried to rebooted it but the touchscreen didnt working at all, n the freeze n lagging happened again n again. i frustrated n need my laptop to work, so i revert back to Nobara Os. im not that kind of Nerd who can fix all techy things n im also a new to linux. but, it was really great having Gnome on Linux Mint which i kinda hate Mint with KDE coz it looks like windows n i hate windows ALOT. 🤣 n BTW i learn how to install gnome on Mint from this video, its great man, thanks, u still deserved a thumb to educate noobie like me.
If passkeys are the future, is the average person expected to backup their keys?
