Yet another great performance from James Horton's Marengi. The Farandole from the Orchestral Suite L'Arlesienne (The Maid from Arles) by Georges Bizet. He of Carmen fame. Apologies for the background noise on all of James's Videos. The organ blower was very noisy and I hope it doesn't detract too much from the performances.

Again, performed on the Hollycome 98-key PEACOCK organ. This is a typical late 20's early 30's song that was all the rage at this time. All due to finding Tutenkarmoun's tomb. This is a typical Wilson Keppel and Betty sand dance tune and composed any a little known composer Adam Thewlis. Both these tunes were arranged and cut by me so therefore qualify for my You tube channel.... Enjoy.

      Those are mostly popular in Britain and it’s not so easy to arrange long and specific songs for organs. If you really want to hear them, learn to make arrangements and offer them to people.

    I most appreciated the "above-view" (with the top open), showing what is going on inside. Question 1: Is the torque needed to create the vacuum (my assumption) and move the paper roll so high to justify such a long crank arm? Question 2: What do the "knobs" activated by the operator with his left hand do?

    • @Mekanixmuzak
      @Mekanixmuzak 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To question 1. There is no Vacuum but a set of bellows that feed air to the pipes. The system is known as pressure pneumatic. The Handle is designed to make quite sure enough air gets to the pipes. as smaller and the Organ grinder would have to turn the handle much faster. thereby knackering himself To question two The two knobs on the side of the instrument control Registers. One is for Violins and tother is a bourdon stop. They can be used separately or together to vary the sound the instrument makes. Hope this is of use. Mechanix Muzak

    The funniest part is that, much though the manufacturers attempted to hide all of the "boring" workings behind a pretty facade, it really made the machine boring to look at rather than enhancing it. (At least in my opinion). All of those whirling, sliding, pumping, drumming, moving bits and pieces out the back are what make it truly interesting. 😌😃 All the same, it's quite interesting to hear what a relatively limited device like this can make of a complicated piece of music such as the 1812 Overture, and over-all it seems to do quite well. My compliments go to the manufacturers, the people who modified and maintain the machine, and to whomever took the time and trouble to transcribe the music so it could play on this machine.

    What you said about "ghost notes" reminded me of a particular "module" music file. Module files come in different formats and were originally designed for the Amiga computer although they expanded to PCs quickly. The file has a collection of sound samples, along with instructions for the playback program on how to play back those samples. Pitch changes are accomplished by speeding up or slowing down the playback of the samples, and other effects such as volume changes and repeats can be coded into the module. In one particular piece of music which makes extensive use of a looping flute note, there's a point where you'd swear just by listening to it that the flute stopped and immediately restarted on the same note with slightly increased volume, but if you look at the "roll" scrolling past on the screen, you can see that the note was continuous and uninterupted with no increase in volume. The sound sample does not seem to have anything special in it to account for this audible illusion, so it must be entirely psychological.

    • @Mekanixmuzak
      @Mekanixmuzak 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am glad that you recognise these Ghost notes.I make quite a big use of these ghost notes especially in the smaller scale. when you have a small hand turned organ it naturally has a limited scale, 3 bass note if you are lucky and most of the sharps are left out. only the ones that that pertain to the key the organ is pitched in i.e. Key of F. A sharp is essential and Key of G an F sharp would;d also be useful. So, it his up to the Noteur to psychologically bamboozle the listener. Unfortunately most noters on small scales tend to ignore this phenomenon, particularly in the Bass and tend to bang in an approxomatebass note which shows up the limitation of the organ scale and makes a horrible noise at the same time. Thuan for your interest

I can hear Steve Clarkes influence with the sheer number of notes playing at once & all the bass notes being used at once. The version on the A&R Marenghi is also nice, Eddy Nickson had also done it on Allan Guest's 65 key.
