Is a NORTH-facing Roof Good for Solar Panels? Data REVEALED
In this video we review whether it's really worth it to install solar panels on a North roof and whether your roof orientation really matters that much? In order to test this, we visited a customer that added solar panels onto his North roof after he had previously installed panels on his south roof. In their circumstance, the solar production wasn't covering their energy load so that's where we came in....
If you're really wondering if it's worth installing solar on a North roof then this video should back your questions up with answers and give you an idea of what is possible when you have panels optimised with micro-inverters...

Doesn’t sound as good as Nest
Great video, thank you for the comparison.
I had mine ripped mine out after 3 fan failure. On the he last one. It took the mother board as well . Also didn't find it very efficient
On mine the temperature reading is inaccurate. How do I fix this?
Follow the instructions. It doesn't work.
Thanks for the vid. Really enjoy the content. My research tells me that the general rule of thumb is that North produces about 50-55% of South on like for like basis. PVGIS seems to back that up. So completely North facing would produce 33-35% of a North and South system. North East would produce more than North and South West would produce less than South. The system in the video has slightly higher peak rating and it's slightly newer (a small amount of Deg on the older stuff). There may be other variables too.... Appreciate any thoughts on that. On that basis would it be fair to estimate that on a system like this like this the north-east should produce approx 40% of total? So as a very rough estimate the microinverters and higher spec panels are adding up to 5%? Thanks
Thank you for the information great content.
I enjoyed your video thanks Ben and it was very informative. Could you tell me how the Alpha battery performed in the last week or so with the temperature being below -0 degrees in the North West of the UK. 👍
Enjoyed this video. Good team. Very tempted to choose these for my install but not sure I’ve got enough bacon.
Some one help me i don't understand nothing
We have a NE solar array and a SW solar array, both have 12 identicle panels, 6.3kWp on each array and absolutly no shading, the system was installed in October around the second week, so only have a few months data, so the NE array has produced 119kWh, and the SW array has produced 235kWh so I would say NE array is producing pretty much 50% of what the SW is producing, I do however expect that to increase as we move into the spring and summer as the pitch on our roof is 23 degrees, so with the sun higher in the sky, the NE panels should get more direct sunlight than a house with a 45 degree roof pitch, having said that, with the lack of sunlight over the last few months, both arrays would be getting more equal light rather than direct sunlight, so that is most likely the reason that the NE is at 50% rather than less than 50% generation, I would imagine if every day was sunny, with the low sun, SW generation would be substantially more as a percentage that the NE array.
None of my buttons work it's like there locked what do I do
Mine was fully frozen. My worcester boiler had the old 227, ignition/ ionisation fault. I thawed it bit with the kettle and had to bash the pipe to break the ice up and loads fell out. Boiler worked fine after that.
Just done the exact same thing to the same boiler with the same error this morning, the stick really helped break up the internal ice and eventually it worked.
How to set child lock
So, as a customer who is currently awaiting the immanent installation of my panels, without micro inverters, with DC straight to a Tesla Powerwall 3, wouldn’t I be better with an ACM? With little to no risk of shading, I took it that keeping the losses of changing DC to AC would be more efficient.
This doesn't work at all, my copper pipe is inside a plastic one outside so no amount of hot water will reach it. This is the 3rd year it's frozen, I'm fuming
Also it's lagged
Fumming? Just insulate it
@@mysterygirl-xt4ic it is insulated
Baxi said nothing they can do as it's on an outside wall, seeing as you are so knowledgeable would you like to come and fix mine before you judge?
Hi, how will the Alpha G3 cope with the cold weather that the UK is having at the moment?
I rather go with something unMUSK...
Shorten the video
A very clear a precise video 👌 Thanks for making and sharing 👍
(Am i glad you put this on u tube, been confused about how to set up this thermostat...but you made it so easy to follow). But i have one issue with this, set up the weekly Monday to Friday ok but could not set the week-end one....and also the days are all wrong in the set-up when pressing the auto back...(what do i need to do to get the days back in order??.
Baxi wasn’t mentioned, is 830 any good?
please start offering signenergy batteries and inverters as well,
It is a load of rubbish, useless nonsense.
How do you switch it on?
The thermostat should always be 'on' unless the batteries have died.
Can this battery force discharge to the grid during peak hours?
Yes it can!
Thanks for explaining. Why does the temp have to be low to turn off ? Can it not just finish at the time you put on the 2nd number. Why does it have to be as low as say 10
Will this do Hot water priority (dual temp?)
We have a Bosch 35 kw and it runs 2 showers.
what are the big changes between the original tada and new v3+ i know they are not compatible with each other, but other detials seem to be exactly the same, but we know like hive the original wasn't part of the boiler plus new requirement, but has this changed with the v3+ or is it just a case of now being compatible with heat pump support, and is it more reliable as the origonal isn't eaxctly great for temp tracking
Hey, the new Tado is on a matter network so in simple terms, it's connectivity is stronger / better. It will also be able to link in with smart devices such as Alexa etc.
@ thank you team
6 months ago I installed 2 x 10.1 and 1 x 5Kw Alpha inverter in Australia, REALLY REALY Pleased, Have the EPS dedicated to fridge , instantiations hot water , lights, 1 GPO (TV) and internet. Sooooo cool every power black out we have had, has been a breeze
Can't beat having power when everyone else's is out 😅
Great video guys!
Appreciate the comment - thank you!
Great video. I have this installed already, how easy is it to replace this with a thermostat that has WiFi app capability, without touching the wiring in the boiler?
Let Alan talk
Where did you get the ac supply for the chint meter? I thought it should be protected by a 6 amp, not straight of the ac suppling inverter, or am I wrong as this would save time on installation.
We have the all-in-one 13.5 and the gateway. These are installed in our garage and have performed flawlessly for the past year. Our only issue is that the Zappi car charger takes charge from the home battery which we don't want to do, despite what setting it's on. Any advise?
15:12 that is a DB9 9 pin connector VGA is same form factor but with 15 pins and it an HD15. Yeah long day don't sweat it they look similar.
Thanks for letting us know!
When we had our panels installed in 2013, they did it all using one ladder. No scaffold. No-one died or fell off the roof. 26 panels on two sides of the 2 story house roof.
For one, we have health and safety regulations now, but why take the risk over a few minutes of extra work?
Thank you Ben & the Heatable Team - your videos are most informative (and entertaining 😊). My existing 6.6kW panel system with Sungrow 5kW inverter is being upgraded with an additional 4.95kW of panels PLUS a Powerwall 3. The installation date was for 17 December but due to supply issues ex Tesla this has been delayed (not sure for how long). I live in Newcastle (NSW, Australia) by the way. The Solar incentives for both batteries and panels enabled me to decide about going ahead with this. My home is 3 Phase and the grid here is pretty stable (to date) so my expectations are not so much back up for extended periods but rather $$ savings. Our FIT (Feed in Tariffs) have been reduced from about AUD$0.10 to AUD$0.05 so that was another factor to my decision. I watch numerous channels on Solar etc but yours is a standout, along with Gary Does Solar. Keep up the great work - you are getting better and better 😊 Unfortunately we do not have any Octopus equivalent here….
What's the total battery capacity?
This was a 10.1kWh.
Just like with an army, it's all about the logistics....
What was the reasoning for the customer choosing DC coupled panels? Also what panels were they?
Hey Ian, the main reason was just due to cost, micro-inverters run at a slighter higher price and it was a toss up for them on their budget and what they could get for it. At the end of the day they wanted as many panels as possible and the best solution for them.
loose the clown
Cheers for this well explained I wasn't sure if it would come on in the off position regarding frost.
