    Eagle Mainmaster here. Transiting northwards to New London from the Caribbean. Good breeze, lots of canvas set, surfing in the Stream, but a good day, me supervising the helm watch of cadets. Radar reports contact aft. Fast contact. Big contact. Arleigh Burke probably close to twenty five knots. She roars past us - upwind of course, plenty of board though, but steals the breeze a bit. Whatever, diesel sucks, squareriggers rule. She pulls a crash stop and reverses. Twenty knots in reverse, steals our breeze again. Eyes roll. Fucking Navy. Coming back for another pass - this time with the biggest Jolly Roger I've ever seen. Gotta give them credit. Still fucked up the wind. They were just jelly.

    It is so helpful to understand WHY. Once you understand why a rule is what it is, you do not need to remember the rule. the correct course of action if obvious. The rules all revolve around maneuverability and visibility. It is the same with aircraft. Balloon give way to no one. Helicopters give way to everyone. Thanks

    As a fisherman, we hate everyone, because we are trying to fish a very specific spot or line, and are often going slow, and often have several lines out behind the boat. When you’re just out for a joy ride, you have the entire lake or ocean float around pointlessly like a happy idiot, but instead you zip right by, waking us out, or are too close in front of us in any direction that causes us to change course, and if you make us have to change course sharply, that could mean a rankled mess of gear and potentially losing hundreds of dollars of gear. Not to mention getting on a line at slow speeds often means a long time to do it, so when it took me 45 min to get back on this spot and you make me get off my line, now I’m another 45 minutes away from catching another fish. As a power boater, we hate sails because you’re like a spastic fly. You ever try to swat a crazy fly out of the air? It’s tough to time and predict their movements. Same with sailboats. We have to give way, ok, but you as the stand on vessel need to maintain course and speed, we can’t give way if you change course half a dozen times. And I’m not talking about a channel, clearly you can’t run aground, but in a wide open lay, bay or ocean, you’re creating unnecessary navigational stress for the power boaters, and even more so for fishermen who might already be pretty close to shore and here you are headed right for us. Well, are you going to change course before you get to me or after, if I start to change course, which direction. Should I change course so you don’t change right into me, oh, ok good, they changed course before I had to make a decision, oh wait, they’re headed right for us again… F sails. F all pleasure boaters, but especially sails. If you can avoid land, then you can avoid a fisherman doing 2 mph 1 yards from land. Maybe power boaters and fishermen need to take sailors out so they can see what nonsense sails put us through. And it’s even better when they don’t have a radio or do t have it on so, it’s all a big guessing game

    Nice. My theory is the prop is sorta like a paddle wheel. So it does direct the water rearward or forward depending on spin, but is also throws that water off to the side too. But the main thing is the WHY doesn't matter. Like gravity, we can spend many hours and cases of rum debating why it exists, but that doesn't change the fact that it does exist and how we live with it. So on your monohull sailboat or other single screw fixed boat, learn it and use it for your advantage.

    Most boaters have single engine outboards. No rudders. Most boaters boat on inland lakes and are not coastal boaters. FL has the most registered boats but MN is second and MI is third and most boat in inland lakes with single outboard engines. A right hand prop (which most single engine outboards are) in forward if unattended creates the "circle of death" circling in a clockwise direction because of the torque of a right hand prop. In reverse, that prop is spinning counter clockwise and is going to pull port. Counter clockwise. It all changes with twins or DuoProps but the vast majority of boaters have a single outboard engine. Some of us don't worry as if we hit the dock with our aluminum fishing boat it's not the end of the world. Typically not even a dent!

    honestly having a Capt Lic is a liability for any recreational sailor...unless your doing it for a source of income avoid the coast guard licensing as "warnings" become a non-issue, expect a fine for anything you do wrong in regards to liability at sea the exponentially more expensive boat has the ultimate say in any collision because they have the resources to prolong litigation until the smaller vessels owners loses everything even defending a legit action...LMAO

    • @Trump985
      @Trump985 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      According to who? I occasionally run a 49 passenger inspected 50ft water taxi and according to the COI it only requires One Master and ZERO other crew. The Manning requirements are clearly stated on the vessels COI (certificate of inspection) and are based on things like the number of decks, the gross tonnage, passenger capacity, distance from shore, and length of the voyage. Not some hard and fast rule like over a certain length requires x crew! As a general rule any inspected vessel will require a minimum of 2 crew members (one deckhand and one licensed master) minimum unless you can demonstrate to the USCG that you can successfully complete a man overboard and a fire drill solo. Single crew operation is certainly allowed and possible on vessels over 40 feet! There are dozens of single crew water taxis that are over 40 feet operating with no additional crew everyday in almost every harbor.
