    I was interested in getting a license (OUPV) just to do charters on my small sailboat. The requirement for a minimum of 360 sea days. That's going to take me a LOT of time!

    Delaware has an exemption for 'born before ...' - don't recall the date. After that you have to take the boater safety course.

    how does this apply to other countries? If I wanted to do a bareboat charter and sell out the staterooms to cover the cost in the BVI, do I need a different license? or is this even considered getting paid if it is a cost share activity and there is no realized profits on my side? Thanks

    Here in the Netherlands you need a license if your boat can go faster than 20 km/h (don't even get me started why they don't use knots), is longer than 15 meters or both. I'm currently (still) studying for my VB2 (thats the Dutch equivalent for RYA yacht master and when I pass I can get the RYA document as well). When I pass I am allowed to helm pleasure boats up to 40 meters. However the rules and regulations are so different in all bodies of water here, there are different rules for the big lakes, different for the small lakes and rivers and also different for the canals and seas. It is a pain to get it all crammed in my head. I just want this license so I can helm powerboats for my work (entertainment industry eg camera boats) and to get more work as a delivery crew member. Like always love your humour.

    • @CaptainBoomies
      @CaptainBoomies ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard this before. I always have mild-panic-research to do whenever I cruise in Europe because the rules can change so much. Good luck, captain!

      @dutchglobetrotter4513 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CaptainBoomies Thanks. Yes the rules and regulations also change between each country within the EU the UK ones are also different. Thats why I like sailing in the Caribbean, them guys are relaxed and don't really car what papers you have, as long as you don't crash into another boat or a dock.

    I’ve always wanted to work on a tug boat. Do you have any advice on tug jobs?

    • @NYHalfassprepper
      @NYHalfassprepper ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tug captain here, if you want to work on an inland river boat, you can do with nothing, just apply and get hired. If you want to work on a tug that works on other waters you will need a TWIC, MMC endorsed as Ordinary Seaman, and a basic safety class. That should be enough to get you on most tugs.

      You may technically not be required to have a license. However, in my experience (especially camera boat), insurance companies can require you to have a license anyway.

  • @SailingSisu
    @SailingSisu ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, we decided to do the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore to gain some theoretical (and very little practical) knowledge on what a boat does and what the different parts of the boat are named and what they do :-D That said, in South Africa, you cannot leave Cape Town Harbour without a Skipper License, which I think is a good thing after we were in Florida for a few months....I mean, I would strongly recommend USGC to force everyone to at least know how to anchor properly :-D

    • @CaptainBoomies
      @CaptainBoomies ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been threatening to get my MCA yachtmaster license for years because they say it's "more practical and therefore better" but I've seen bad captains holding all kinds of certifications. You really need to get out there and do it.

    • @SailingSisu
      @SailingSisu ปีที่แล้ว

      I think for us who knew absolutely nothing about boats, we welcomed any and all knowledge of boats and sailing and weather and currents, etc.

    • @danielboughton3624
      @danielboughton3624 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CaptainBoomies I agree. Anything that is a 'book' test v.s. practical applications of knowledge is going to be a lot less useful than the school of hard knocks. Anchoring is funky any way around it because mud is not the same everywhere nor is a sandy bottom and so on. I anchored up for a storm back in the early 90's where every boat around me ended up aground and a few high and dry on the shore. We didn't drag at all but I knew the place and double checked depth, swing, and scope. I also anchored away from anyone that might come my way if they lost their grip. Going for a new venue this winter so we'll how I do.

    Okay, now I REALLY want to know what the man overboard drill looks like for one of those casino “boats in a box on the river.” Like…. 🤔 Do they have tenders to go chase the jumper down river? Does it just consist of someone standing and pointing while someone else dials 911 to get the coast guard and the local sherrif’s office? The more I think about it… the scarier that gets, but then again, the likelihood of it ever happening…. 😅

    • @CaptainBoomies
      @CaptainBoomies ปีที่แล้ว

      Riiiiight?!? It's been killing me! I know they get USCG inspected, and that means a man-overboard drill with the creepy doll... And I think I saw a small inflatable on one, but it's all very strange.

    OK, "Professional" Captain . There is NO such thing as a Captains License !! Only OUPV, or Master by tonnage. BTW, If I bring sandwiches , or beverages, or chip in for fuel, I am paying customer.
    If you don't think so wait till someone slips and gets injured, and then goes to a lawyer. You gave good advise about the liabilities of having a professional license. BTW, I think Professional
    only has one "F". Try turning on Spell Check. Having said all that, I really enjoyed your video.
