Love your sense of humour! The problem was you were approaching from a closed berth position rather than an open berth position (terminology we use in the UK). An open berth approach would be beginning your reverse toward the dock at the middle/bottom left part of the frame. As you approach the dock, apply port helm (and reverse gear) to straighten up with the dock and your momentum will bring the bow onto the dock. If your engine trim is reducing your steerage to the point it looks like you're going to impact the dock at a steep angle then stbd helm and forward gear will allow you to rotate the boat parallel to the dock, or bail on the maneuver and try again.
First never have anyone on board you want to impress with your skills . Docking God's only allow a perfect docking when no one is watching. Second it was not a failure the boat was successfully tied to the dock without damage and drinks followed. Success.!!!! It's a small boat . The beauty is you can pull it up next to the dock by hand . Oh and you are my favorite boating YT channel !!!!
Respect for posting this. It's hard to admit to a poor docking on such a small boat when you're used to doing big boat things. The drone footage is pretty sweet though. It gives a great view of what you were trying to accomplish. My last ship was 208' LOA. I am a Senior Watch Officer and had spent a lot of time docking, talking about docking, training junior officers on docking, and analyzing good and bad dockings. I got my first personal boat last year and committed all the stupid docking mistakes one can make, including nearly falling into the drink with one foot on the pier and the other on the deck. I couldn't even enjoy my dinner because I was so embarrassed that I had such trouble getting my stupid little 21' I/O into the slip at the restaurant. Shit happens 😅

I once witnessed a young fella trying to work up the courage to wrap his arm around what I assume was his date at the movies and I have to say I felt more awkward/embarrassed by proxy watching this then I did watching him. Props to you for putting it out there for everyone to see.

You’re totally right about size being a factor. A analogy would be backing up a trailer. It’s easier with a long trailer versus a short one. The techniques don’t scale for size.
Your huband was really on point with the docking. Stepped off smartly, held the boat in place...All while fending it off from hitting the dock. 10 points for him!! Personally I've got to say don't feel too bad about not being able to dock that boat. You do know much bigger boats and I look at it as if your brain is wired to best suit that scenario. I have a similar problem with playing Checkers. I can't do it...the simple old game of Checkers.... I can't beat my cat. (Playing with my father may have developed some sort of mental block there.) However ,ask how many competitions I've won playing Chess and it is a different story. All in all be who you are and understand you may have off days, and that your partner in life can reel you in during those times. Hey you are my second favorite YT channel. Considering how new you are at it compared to the competition, I'd take that as quite a compliment. Keep up the awesome and "body language expressive" work!! Also I have the Argo Nav app!!! Your last approach was the best one because you put the bow where you wanted it first with limited control of the stern trimmed up. Its awesome that you shared your embarrassing moment. Anyone whos ever driven a boat has at least one they admit to. Get an over the road trucker to back a jet ski trailer 50 yards and theyd be in a similar spot. I love your videos and id be glad to give gou some small boat lessons if you can give me some pointers on the big ones. I use a 20' sea ox to do mobile boat repair.
I'm more interested in the conversations you were having with your husband during these trials. Was there a lot of frustration, or was it pretty calm? It looks like the "very little" current is catching the hull and pushing you away. I guess larger boats aren't as affected by these currents. I love the last approach because the hull was inline with the current so there wasn't as much of an effect.
Love your humility in the video. Fun to watch! Question: I was taught that trimming up the drive on a small boat actually helps with reverse. I was told this vectors down the thrust instead of pushing the water into the transom. Did I misunderstand? Why did you state the opposite?
I find it much easier to dock my dad's 42' Post than my 23' Wellcraft. The single outboard is much harder to control the bow with (especially in reverse) than a dual engine setup. Nothing to be embarrassed about! I wonder how much some bow thrusters woukd cost to add to the Hurricane! 🤣
I can tightly parallel park a 30 foot truck with no windows behind the driver seat due to sheer experience, but always struggle to know where the back of my tiny RX-7 is because it's just not something I do very often. No shame.
