It's as though these types of Boards attract a type of individual that hunger for control of others. I once had to deal with a 'board of variance' that hosts volunteers of our town (neighbors), and if they don't take a liking to you and your prospective plans...they impose hardship on you for no reason. One thing I've learned is most of them are pure BLUSTER, and the moment you mention the 'Courts'...you don't hear from them ever again. Few rural municipalities have the resources to sue, and this leaves their threats dead in the water! I find it's always best to reasonably build according to general local code, then you can have an engineer sign off on your build, or improvement making your case unflappable throughout any threats phase of your project.

Your first mistake, was interacting with an entity that has no authority to dictate what you can and cant do. As a Canadian you have the right above any bylaw to live, work and travel anywhere in Canada. Do not comply.

An interesting but perplexing story you've shared. It shows that each unorganized township is different and due diligence is needed when researching which one is best suited for one's needs. Some don't want or need the extra amenities/services provided (like a marina) while others may find having certain services like a marina worth the additional taxes. It wouldn't have to be a neighbor that alerted the board, It was probably an agent of the board being nosey because they're the ones with the info on new people in the area.
