Hi friends! I’m Kerry Ann: A happily retired, postmenopausal woman in my 50's. I’m interested in the psychology of retirement, soul work in the second half of life, midlife transitions, and graceful aging. I created this channel for the conversations I couldn’t find when I needed them:
How do I build a meaningful life in retirement when work has been my primary source of meaning and identity?
What skills do I need in the second half of life that I never even thought of in the first half?
How can I age gracefully in a culture obsessed with anti-aging and reverse-aging?
What happens in the stage of life between mother and crone (there must be one, right?)?
How do I move beyond the surface-level conversations about tips, trips, hacks, and hormones to explore the extraordinary growth possibilities that lie in aging?
I post unedited, long-form videos once a week on a range of topics related to the second half of life.
Subscribe to join me on the journey.

Kerry Ann! I'm so happy to see you and I love your look! I'm also happy to learn from you again. I subscribed! ~ Kiana C.
Basements can be scary in the 70s LOL! Can't wait to go beneath the line.
I'm digging in now, Kerry Ann! Can't wait to see what emerges and I hope to find more positives than my memories tend to hold on to. While I did use a ruler, LOL, I will promise to let it breathe and open the door to let my life speak to me. Handy to have a glass of Kiva during too. ;)
I am so glad to hear that you found your peace and joy during holiday time, as it can be really stressful. Enjoy your annual retreat, it sounds like you'll be having a grand time! Letting go of excessive and often meaningless gifting has been one of the most liberating decisions of my life. I can't remember exactly when I told my family that starting next year, each of us would only gift our own children and grandchildren, but it was just about 2005-2006. In the beginning, people were shocked and some just couldn't conceive how we would celebrate Christmas as a family without exchanging gifts. They thought it was quite a silly idea. However, I stuck with my decision and next year, when I sent out the invites, I reminded everyone that there is only going to be a family gathering, we'll have a delicious meal together and no gifts. I truly believe that we are each other's gift, being with family at holiday time is enough because we like each other a lot. After so many years, everyone has learned to just enjoy the company of each other, without necessarily attaching a gift receipt to it. These days, we are so relaxed, so joyful, we play games, if someone wants to bring a dish to share, that's fine. It is just magnificent and we feel energized and happy after our Christmas day.
I agree totally. My inner self has quit all holidays however my family has not and it’s been a bit of a struggle. I wish I could go to a place and relax and just be the everyday me. Thanksgiving just ended and I have another thirty plus days to get through until I can breathe a sigh of relief.
I agree totally. I quit all holidays. Too much consumerism. I love my minimalist life with my family❤
What a rich gift to give yourselves & in turn those you encounter afterwards! We share our Christmas simple traditions with our children & grandchildren - special foods, Kris Kringle cf multiple gifts for everyone, followed by summer days at the beach. You remind me of how precious a retreat style holiday with just my husband (or at times on my own), offers necessary stillness, rest & reflection - a place where we immerse ourselves in nature, read good books, listen into what reveals itself, dream & plan. Some come to fruition, others springboard us toward different experiences. Having recently transitioned to semi retirement, & still adjusting to this lifestyle on many levels, we have lost some of the rhythm of holidays from work, and setting aside time each year for our own quieter time without family or lots of activity.
I absolutely love your channel! If you don’t mind me asking, how old were you when you retired? Do you plan on sharing your retirement numbers in the future?
Thank you!!! I was 45 and my husband was 46. And I had not planned on sharing numbers but am curious what would be helpful?
@ that’s awesome! I think it really would be! My husband and I are 30 but are looking to early retire in the next 5-10 years. Would you say that if it’s possible to retire in your 30’s, you should go for it? I want to avoid the “one more year” syndrome.
@@anthonypeter8652 short answer: YES! Go for it. Longer answer coming in a video soon (because this is such a great question!).

Boredom. Feeling the need to know what's up so I can be a part of the world larger than my local immediate world.
i did it about 3 years ago. took me just shy of 2 yrs to grow out just past the shoulders. i tossed & turned about whether to go short or not; blend with coloring/highlights to soften the transition line... in the end i did nothing but trim every 4 months. was liberating. hair got healthier. i grew it out longer than i had in years. it is now past my shoulder blades. just ride it out; your journey will take its own shape. ❤
Thank you for such a generous offering... happy to be in this space!

When i was in my 30s, I was having sleep issues. It was so bad that by the time I was 39, I slept 3-4 hrs a day. Really bad since I was full time military. I went to a therapist. I was advised to turn off my TV before sleeping. My sleep was affected by the negative TV programs- natural disasters, murder, etc. Once I turned off TV my sleep improved. When on TH-cam, I'm watching videos that have a calm, softness to it. How do I stay informed of world events - word of mouth, mainly at my job and the 30min news at noon. No all day or night time news.
While working, I used to turn on the news in the morning to catch the traffic and weather before heading out for the day. Upon retiring in June, I found myself turning on the news every morning and watching for longer periods of time out of habit. In the last few months, as I have been considering how I want to spend my time, I am choosing not to watch any news. I am so happy with that decision. If there is something I want to learn about, I seek out the appropriate sources. I am sure if there was something urgent happening, I would hear about it from friends and family. The question is: Does it fill you up? Does it serve you well?
Wow! My husband and I were just talking about this last night. A friend had texted me and attached a picture she had taken of her TV screen to share with me.. It was a picture of my brother on our local news. He's manager of a road safety program here in BC. My husband and I went online to replay the 6:00 news thinking we'd be able to see my brother's safety talk. We didn't see it, and later found out it had aired on the morning news. What we were shocked by was the headlines at the beginning of the news. Negative, negative, negative, and more negative. I was reminded why we don't watch the news very often. It was truly depressing. If anything worth knowing was happening in the world or closer to home, I am sure friends or family would call to share what was happening with me.I don't want to feel like I'm living under a rock, but being bombarded with negativity day in and day out would just be too much. I would much prefer to hear the good that is happening in the world. With five weeks and counting until we retire, my husband and I will definitely be keeping our news intake to a minimum as we begin this new and exciting chapter of our lives.
Can you be any cuter? I don't think so. LOVE YOU! 💕
You're so sweet! Love you too!!!!!
Thank you for this inspiring introduction to a new chapter.
Love this! I don’t think I’ve ever thought about it this was but both my parents never colored their hair. I think they got their greys before 40 and it seems like to me (not sure how it was for them then) that it wasn’t a big deal at all. They’ve subconsciously served as role models for me specifically for this. I didn’t get grey hair until my early 40s and it got me so excited 😂 I’m not sure why. I highlighted my hair a few years after that and told my person to preserve the grey hair 😂😅 this is so funny to me now that I’m sharing.
Thank you Kerry Ann for this exercise. Yes there are things in the basement that I would like to fish out but happily I see many things down there that belong in the basement and I am happy to have shed them. 😊
Amen to that @ajspence3335 !
I'm nearing 49 and so much of my physical work ethic was being driven by being able to help earn income for my aging mother. She was my last parent and after covid took her in 2021, I've lost the proactive workplace perspective and pivoted to a clarity of how simple and peaceful my life could actually be if I could get away from this troublesome work force. Self-diagnosing, I think I'm going through a mixture of midlife mental and emotional changes, beginning to feel physical aging and grief. Life wont stop or slow down enough for me to catch my second wind. I have felt motivated to goal set to enter the "FIRE" plan. What causes ME to worry is health insurance! What are the options for people like me that plan to leave early?!
I'm so sorry to hear about your mother and resonate with how loss can clarify what matters. This video is a good overview: th-cam.com/video/BykvoxJEWGo/w-d-xo.html Briefly, I've observed that people use one of the following strategies: 1) ACA, 2) Healthshare (co-op), or 3) part time job that provides benefits. We buy ours via ACA and this was an important/expensive item we built into our budget.
You are just a little ray of sunshine in my day.
Thank you!!!
Think of the time you will save. What will you do???😊
time AND money!
Woohoo go Kerry Ann! Yay for canceling your appointment! A grey pixie, a grey wedge, or a shaved head would be cute!
Thank you @jessica8939! I got a cute pixie on Monday and I am loving it!
I just subscribed after watching a couple of your videos. I totally resonate with everything you have shared. It’s refreshing to finally find a channel that has so many things that I can relate to. As for going gray, I am 100% for it. When I turned 50 I stopped coloring and cutting my hair (I had a pixie cut). I decided to grow it out because I really wanted long hair that I could braid into pigtails. I asked my hairdresser what her recommendations would be to help me transition and she recommended to lighten up and create an ombre. This worked really well for me. I did see her a couple more times to recreate the ombre until the colored part was pretty much gone. I’m 63 now with long, white hair and I look super cute with my braids. It’s so funny because young women come up to me now and ask where I had my white hair done. 😂 I love your cute hair style. My vote is do what feels right for you.
Thanks for subscribing @DanitaReynolds and the encouragement to go gray! I hope the content continues to be useful and feel free to make suggestions! I'm still figuring things out :-)
It was so nice visiting my future self. I was sad to get back on the elevator.
so glad you enjoyed it and you can go back anytime!
My most surprising part was my elevator! I thought it would be a very modern, chic elevator and instead it was like a flower and color explosion.
@@JenniferBennigson That sounds magical!
Yes beautiful friend! I am excited for your new look! My own personal inclination would be to go super short and start fresh, but you can't go wrong! Thank you for sharing this journey. (❤ from Elisabeth)

@@JoyfulAging Can't wait for the reveal! 🤩
Thank you for this inspiring video Kerry Ann! I will definitely think about the "segments" in order to structure my life in Early Retirement (maybe next year at 45, depending on the markets). 2 Quick questions if that's ok! 1) "Simple Path to Wealth" came out the year you retired, did you change anything to your early retirement process based on the book? (excellent book btw!) 2) How do you manage to avoid the negativity from the news? The past 5 years have been brutal, pretty much since the Pandemic. I am just a bit afraid that with more free time I will think more and stress more about all the negative news out there. Thank you!
Great questions @Moochie79 I always recommend the 'Simple Path to Wealth' because it's the book I wish I had from the beginning, but didn't. I was already following the advice in the book when it came out so it didn't change anything about my personal process. I also recommend YMOYL all the time and nobody actually reads it. But people do read Simple Path to Wealth because of the way it is written. The second question is more complex and I'm curious how others manage this. For me it's two things: 1) I limit my news consumption and 2) I feel clear about my contribution to social change. In terms of consumption, we have some household rules (no tv during the day) and our TV is upstairs in a room (so you have to go out of your way to watch it). I mention this because WATCHING news has the biggest impact on me and so I try to avoid that mode as much as possible. I deleted my social media accounts back in 2020. Right now, I READ the news in small quantities: 1440 for a daily update and long form journalism on the weekend. That said, when I first retired I went through a process to get clear about what change I want to work towards and what my best role is in the social change ecosystem. Me worrying changes nothing. Me engaging in action contributes to change. This distinction allows me to be focused on "my work" instead of "all the work" and frees me from worrying all the time. I think you're smart to ask about managing this because more time can lead to more worry without guardrails. I hope that's helpful to your thinking on this important issue.
@@JoyfulAging Hey Kerry Ann, thanks for the reply! Yes I like YMOYL as well, and Vicky Robin is such a lovely person too! YMOYL is more about the reason why we want to retire early, and Simple Path is more about how to get there. JL Collins is a great human being too! I wish his book was mandatory reading in high schools! "The Millionaire Next Door" is another book I loved. As well as Andrew Hallam's books. For the 2nd point, it is very tough for sure. I do not have TV anymore. I cancelled cable TV many years ago. I follow the news online and read newspapers online too (thru a great app I get from my Public Library). I will definitely need to reduce my news consumption in Retirement. By the way, I am "HSP" and that is another reason why the news has such a big impact on me (violence, injustice, all forms of racism, war, hypocrisy, misogyny, homophobia etc etc...). Oh well, Life is a Journey after all! We try to become the best version of ourselves one day at a time. 🙂
Hi Kerry Ann, your videos are so enjoyable! I tried going grey last year, but have now gone back to dying my hair. You can expect the texture to change as the grey comes in--my hair became more unruly and harder to keep tidy. You might need to cut it more often--one of the comments mentions a female barber and that sounds great! It's a journey indeed and I'm sure you will rock it!
Thank you! Your comment on texture is both fascinating and something I had not considered.
Wow! I’m right there with you in going gray. I retired 4 months ago and stopped coloring my hair. I’m in that messy, growing out stage now and am thinking about getting a short, layered cut to ease the transition. Going gray is definitely changing my image and I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it. It’s nice to have sisters on the same journey!
@LindaPagel it feels sooooo good to know others are on the same path (and ahead of me). Here's to sisters on the journey!
Congratulations on your decision to get to know your natural hair in all its beauty! I stopped coloring my hair at the beginning of the pandemic, June 2020 to be exact. I used to have a feisty red mane and now I'm a full gray, tamed silvery wedge bob. I just went cold turkey, no hair appointments to reconcile the old color with the new growth. To be honest, I exchanged my hairdresser with a good female barber who gives me a brilliant haircut every 4-5 weeks. I wanted my sensibilities to be spared of the puzzled looks my hairdresser so generously granted me every time I stepped into the salon. It took me about a year to fully make the transition, but your hair is much shorter, so I anticipate that probably 6 months would be enough for you. One thing that helped me to go through the most difficult moments when doubting my decision was thinking of all the chemicals I poured over my scalp and hair over decades. It was the biggest motivator for me and I will never go back to coloring my hair. Be prepared to experience a dramatic change in your croma and aura. Colors that used to look good on you may not work with your gray hair. But you'll figure it all out and you'll come out of your unique journey empowered, strong, and proud!🤩
Thank you for your encouragement and your comment is so helpful @nmcclanahan969 ! I had my stylist give me a little pixie today. I especially appreciate you sharing what got you through the difficult moments. I have no idea what this means: "Be prepared to experience a dramatic change in your croma and aura." but I can't wait to find out!!!!
I am really enjoying your content! I retired 5 months ago and began growing out my grays on my shoulder-length hair about 3 months ago. I did add some highlights to ease the transition. I am embracing this journey to my authentic self.
So glad to know I'm not alone @eileenpaquette8942 !
I love your channel. I’m 75 yrs and have been totally gray/white for 20 years. After the need to look younger at work has passed it has been freeing to me to go through this process. I find the sun bleaches it more and it gives my skin tone a softer Color overall. In other words au natural suits us more. In 6 months the hard part will be done. It will be interesting to hear what you say about it.
Thanks for the encouragement @judylaybourne7908 ! I think about this every year around my birthday. And every year my colorist says: "Don't do it! It will look terrible on you! Women with gray hair look old and tired - why would you want that?" This year was the first time I didn't ask for his feedback. I'm ready and that's enough. I'm going to hold on this: "in 6 months the hard part will be done".
Kerry Ann, I love your content and became an immediate subscriber. I’m 50 and have had salt n pepper hair since I was 25. Still waiting on my full head to turn. Once I started to see my gray at the age of 25 I just allowed it to come in. My hair is as black as it can be and I always wanted color but was afraid to mess it up with color. So I look at my grey as my color. My suggestion is to taper the back of your hair and leave the top curly. It will begin to mix in. I will say you are going to have to be okay with it growing how it grows because you can’t control that part. Resist the urge to color it when you don’t like what it looks like but know it’s a journey and not a sprint. Or you can try to find a wig with both colors to see what it may look like. Just enjoy getting to know your new hair in each state it is in. Good luck. I love love love mine.
Thank you @msroro3127 ! I think this is great advice about the cut. I also love you're phrasing "it’s a journey and not a sprint". I'm going to put that on my bulletin board :-)
