Mixing Australian native plants into a formal garden design | Behind the Garden Gate
This stunning 10-year-old garden beautifully blends Australian native plants with a formal garden aesthetic, creating a harmonious connection to its bushland surrounds. If you’re looking for garden design ideas or inspiration for gardening in Australia, this space offers a perfect mix of formal elements, like clipped hedges, a curved garden arbour and structured garden beds, with naturalistic native plantings that reflect the surrounding landscape.
In today’s tour, we’ll explore a calm, established backyard in Warrandyte, featuring everything from striking Gymea lilies and a beautiful curved arbour to a fire pit area and an entertainer’s lawn. The garden’s thoughtful design incorporates a crushed rock path that links the front cottage garden with the native-filled backyard, showcasing hardy Australian natives like correas, acacias, and lomandras. Plus, you’ll see how exotics like crab apples and Crepe Myrtles add seasonal colour and interest in more formal garden beds.
This peaceful retreat, built by Semken Landscaping and Vivid Design, is a masterclass in blending formal structure with Australian native plants.
Let me know in the comments what part of this garden caught your eye! Don’t forget to like and subscribe for more garden tours and ideas.

    I like how the overhead shot (8:00) shows the gardens of the nearby houses creating habitat for small birds, reptiles and mammals collectively. There are large trees, shrubby outcrops and areas of dense understorey and rocks for the wildlife to move through, even though the houses take up so much of the land they are on. Formal gardens can, of course, be lovely.... but I think part of responsible stewardship is to create balance on the land with areas of native planting and wildlife habitat to ensure those who were there first still have a place to live and flourish. I think these owners achieved that.

    How to provide drainage in a pot with no holes?

    • @BeanThereDugThat
      @BeanThereDugThat 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Never plant into pots without holes, unless you want a water garden! Instead, plant into a black plastic pot that fits snuggly inside the pot without holes and then you can remove the plastic pot when you water and put it back after OR just tip out excess water from the pot without holes after watering.

      It isn't an issue because our soil is free draining and also the water doesn't bank up behind one piece as now we've done all the terracing the water soaks into the ground nice and slowly. Before doing the terracing water would run down the slope and pool at our back door!

    Living in the sub tropics l have found that beds need to be monitored and managed (as any keen gardener would do!)…otherwise they can become waterlogged…generally most plants appreciate the water being made so readily available…and our celery loves it!.,.👏👏👏

    • @BeanThereDugThat

      Oh yes I can imagine it could become a BIG issue for you especially with high summer rainfalls and humidity.
