Lecture Notes:
I. Herbert Marcuse became a pop figure, the philosopher of the 60s. He expressed a key contradiction in modernity. Modernity is "enlightenment", the end of myth and dogma, the power of reason; but it is also the rise of technology, capitalism, specialization, instrumental reason and the return of myth and dogma. The enlightenment built an intellect powerful enough to surrendering dogmatically before the powers of technology. This is the "Dialectic of Enlightenment" as analyzed by Herxheimer and Adorno and popularized by Marcuse.
II. Instrumental rationality, information-based individual reason, leads to irrational outcomes. Individual monologic rationality is not rational in the totality of overall system. How did the force of the love of reason become itself unreasonable? The self cannot escape siege under the sway of instrumental reason alone, it drains the world of meaning and leads to the entwinement of myth and enlightenment. The film "Dr. Strangelove" is one long example of the contradictions outlined by Marcuse.
III. Instrumental reason is the product of a one-dimensional society that produces one-dimensional human beings. Marcuse criticizes our society along at least two dimensions. First, the inner dimension: anxiety, despair, nausea and a massive industry in drugs to deal with these pathologies. A society of addicts. Second, the outer social world: alienation (separation from the subject and the object and the self in Marx's sense); rationalization (bureaucracy and technical action in Weber's sense). These produce a one-dimensional culture or banality which reduces human suffering and human desire to trivia and image.
IV. Such humans have by now become deeply skeptical and cynical about almost everything; in particular, the government and the culture industry. Beyond that, we are becoming skeptical about our history, our meaning, our purpose and the general fate of the species.
V. Marcuse's method of criticism is called internal critique which measures a society against its own historically accumulated concepts and ideals in order to point out the gap between the actual social practices and the principles.
VI. Marcuse also never lost faith in the human species to reconstruct itself, to begin anew. This hope of liberation transcended the field of economics and standard Marxism, as well as the achievements of the so-called free and democratic world of today. He also rested his hope in the possibility of that the self could be won against the odds. Today, unfortunately, this view will seem to many quaint.

And there's a reason for that: spirits, but they, he said said mystic beings do not bargain.
Advice wanted please: he says we are trying to straighten ourselves out in a wiggly world.. I am in rehab currently getting sober, and the staff here are trying to help me create a routine or a regiment. Yet I see things differently but don't really have the words for it. It does seem though, that the brain does like to know what is coming and a routine can be healthy. Anyone have any advice on this? What would Alan do haha
Routine is massively helpful at most, promotes good eating and sleep regulation and helps you make good health choices and create a good self image. All fundamental in self love/respect. Applies to a lot of people,I struggle with tight routine so I’m gonna start just setting goals for each day, and just working to accomplish them rather than keep a rigid structure
@@aranwizard thanks for your words! appreciate you
@@seanwaters2577 you’re welcome dude. I was recently let go by someone I truly love, and they treated me like a piece of dirt on their shoe because I messed up. They are autistic and messed my whole life up ‘out of care’ The massive difference in my perception of what happened and what they said happened caused massive cognitive dissonance in my mind I.e they hurt me because they loved me. Made 0 sense to me. Their reasoning didn’t line up with their actions and I was told they couldn’t love me because I didn’t love myself. I haven’t got all the answers dude, but I find it easier to help others than I do myself. I’m glad my words resonated and I wish you the best of luck. The fact you are trying to change says a lot about you. You are worth it dude.
Eucledes having a weak mind? Well, he saw a panhuman truth more than the orator
thank you
Exactly when you get to dead end only then all basculat.❤
One of my favourites from Alan. Thank you for sharing.
Does anybody know where to find a sweater/cardigan shawl like the one hes wearing in this?
I could be wrong but I think he got the jumper from a rural Mexican village where they make quality clothes.. I remember him saying in a video it's the only place left to get real clothing
I searched '70's style male wool cardigan' and a handful came up
@@BitofNothing I found a bunch on ebay by searching cowichan sweater/shall
Allan Watts you ARE doing somthing about it! Allan Watts, what a man! Just someone who you would call a knower! An original thinker!
The first time I saw him!
Excellent video with the perfect cut from Watts!
@@nicolemoschini3817 Thank you! 🤗
@@BitofNothing appreciation and acknowledgment served where it is deserved 💯🤌🏼💋 keep it up!! 💜✨🕉️
⭐️ 💯% True ⭐️
Because we are so convinced of our smallness, we are willing to wreck everything in our natural world. We are not small. We are consciousness itself.
22:04 ego cannot get rid of ego no matter how much time, even to the end of time! 😊😅
20:40 self-contraction; the ruination of real living. In other words ego!
We're peopling!! I love Alan! He's so spot on! With a sprinkle of humor. ❤☯️🫶
"We grow out of this world in exactly the same way the apples grow on the apple tree." Sorry, incorrect. The apple tree apples because the apples carry the seed to go and make more apple trees. Humanity, if we spread out into the stars, is not going to create another planet out of a bare star system.
Where did the seeds come from?
Also, he’s not referring to other planets. My interpretation of this is that we are just like apples, we grow out of the earth not from a grander place or man. We’re here just like the plants and animals. We should be sharing the earth not lording over it. Especially as we are destroying the earth.
This is an excerpt from the full video, the other commenter explained it in more detail. But, for example, if you throw apple seeds or humanity into space, you won't get apple trees or more humans. Both apple trees and humans 'spread their seeds' to create more. He's saying grow out of this world, needing the world as part of the process.
JK and Alan the two greats love it
Bible:: for you are in the world,, but you are not of the world just as I am not of the world.
"A man who thinks all the time can never think think anything but thought" ahh statement

I will touch there people around the world asking him to save him . This is not by me its universe worning ❤
"teeth cant bite themselves", "a knife cant cut itself", "fire doesnt burn itself" [chuckles at own genius and deep voice]

I've sense this deep within myself for years and it's profound and emotional to hear it put into such amazing words that this man uses... what a talent. Such deep thinking with eloquent use of words. An actual delight. Enjoy your life.❤
I had a dream with one of those wheels in it. People were coming back to earth in those wheels that spun really fast, and it creates light that transported people back to earth.
thats's the new spirituality or if you like to call it religion #DaoPantheism
If you like Alan Watts, this one is as keeper. If you discovered just now Alan Watts, you might read enough to discover his very own fallacies, which made him a Man with insecurities about women, death, life, nature and what encompasses our very own insecurities. He did not pass peacefully, making him even more relatable as a fellow human rather than a prophet.
Word. It’s his essential vulnerabilities and humility that make his work so relatable and (at least for the time) revolutionary in the western world. He’s my self help hero.
Ask yourself “what is here when there’s no problem to solve?” Sit with that experience. Be still and know I am
We haven't stopped, we've only gotten worse.
The way he thinks about nature, is the way i think about my ppl who suffer and are lost, within the "civilized" world.
I love Alan Watts.. Im pretty much sure im im part of a re-incarnation of this most amazing man..❤❤❤
What a message...so sad what would he say now ?
In the 70's it was Vietnam, Watergate, Kent State, Roe vs. Wade, Inflation etc. Nothing changes, it has always been like this, in every decade. It's just the perpetual dance of Yin & Yang. In the 5th century BC Lao Tzu wrote the universe is forever out of control. Just enjoy the show and don't get caught up in the drama. For every bad there is an equal and opposite good. :)
Jesus. 🕊️Praise-be to our Lord and Master Jesus Christ ALMIGHTY in Jesus Name - Amen🕊️
Do we need a psychiatrist, a phsychologist, a guru, a counseler, a priest, or can we understand for ourselves through close observations of the workings of the mind? At least we are surrounded by plenty of source material. 😅
To think that Watts self-destructed just 2 years later.
a bit of nothing; erverything?
😂
"ITS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY THAT WE LET GO OF OURSELVES AND IT CANT BE DONE". -how beautiful.
It's my nature to love and worship the Devi. I can certainly let go and trust nature.
Unreal insight. I wish i]de known of him eatlier
Sirious chap talking here guys..he knows it all.. a reversed priest so to say ..
More than 50 years has passed since this talk, and it is still relevant.
