Ignoring the quality difference, even my wife can accidentally insert a DVD instead of a 4K DVD and doesn't get the difference on our lounge TV let alone our 4m wide cinema screen upstairs, you've hit the nail on my head with the convenience of streaming. So many movies I love aren't even on streaming services. Other movies do appear but then disappear. Other movies are spread across countless different streaming services. And worse yet the browsing experience in different streaming services is horrendous - Disney gets laggier and laggier the more you scroll and it is not easy to find content with their extremely poorly chosen subsets they show you, which in itself is a subset of the overall global catalogue as content either doesn't exist in streaming or moves about different providers. I love the convenience of streaming for simply sitting down as a family and watching a movie, yet at the same time it is also something the entire family DREADS because it is an absolute fiasco trying to find one and feels like that gets harder and harder as time goes on... sometimes we just feel like watching a particular movie, we have to Google to see if any of the (multiple) providers we have to subscribe to has it, then find we can't get it so go to our Blu-ray collection to get it and head upstairs to our cinema anyway. Again keeping the quality difference out as I appreciate that is not relevant to many people, just focussing on the fact that streaming has its benefits as does physical but streaming is loosing its magic. And affordability - I'm now down to two streaming services, and if it weren't for my wife needing one of them for a particular series I'd strip out one more just over the endless price increases and content stripping.

8k will never happen. Its like color standards of one billion colors when we can only see 16 million. It takes a special movie for me to buy it on 4k, bluray is usually fine. Most TV sets that are 4k do a good job of upconverting 1080p to 4k

I don't pay streaming sites so just use free ones (Freevee,Pluto, Plex) and just have stuff on in the background so don't really pay 100% attention. At one point I had 2000 DVD's and still have several hundred DVD after downsizing (and same with Blu Ray) but DVD is the most nostalgic for me.

I have this projector, is not best, but I give you an advice, in front of projection on sealing, try to paint 1 meter with black, if you can, best, do on side walls, or use some cheap mat stiker on cealing/walls, that can be removed when you want. At least 1 meter! This helps alot. Same to you I don't use a projector screen, I just put stiker on cealing 1.20m and a carpet on floor in front of projection that absorb reflexios. I cannot transform my room in a cave like dedicate room, but kiling reflexions and ading dose things, I see an improvment like 30% with black levels, the image is way better. Ps. Sorry for my english. Greetings from Romania!

Colors are flat... and the soundtrack... might as well turn off the surround and hook up some 1993 altec lansing PC speakers from dell. I have also noticed that in streaming the Bass audio is much too loud with the compression most studios are using. Boomy bass vs walking bass lines. Big difference

I never really got into streaming movies and shows. DVDs and BDs are better quality without wasting your Internet bandwidth. There's maybe one BD I want to buy a year. One BD costs much less then 12 months of many streaming services because movies are scattered across different platforms. When Discovery started removing content that people had bought, it's like, what did you expect? You're having someone else watch your stuff knowing full well they could just throw it out at any time to free up space. The only way to make sure content is available is to buy it on physical media and take care of it yourself. If physical media goes away, it may be that the only way to watch some content is on physical media or piracy. Piracy doesn't help anyone, so keep buying physical media to give publishers a reason to keep making discs. Even if stores stop selling discs on location, you should be able to get them online which is probably where it's going.

I think what I like about projectors is the versatility which you showed, just taking them with you, using them outdoors and whatnot. It doesn't even matter that much if what you're projecting on is just some random wall. But the bigger thing for me is that the feeling that comes with it. Every time I turn one on it feels like an "experience" whereas TVs feel sterile soon after you get them, it becomes just another screen in your home, you don't randomly move a TV outside or take it to a friend to enjoy it there. As for the screen Elite Screens are good bang for the buck (Still expensive though). Just one with ALR is probably already very good.

There’s a few ways to look at it at this day it would probably fail, mainly because the technology and TVs isn’t there yet. Maybe in like 10 years from now when they have 16 K TVs or something it would be wise to released it. Also you have to keep in mind that The majority of people are very uneducated in Image and sound quality, they prefer to stream a completely inferior version without owning it, over purchasing a higher quality experience. A lot of people that I know are shocked when they see a standard 1080p Blu-ray put the shame anything they can stream. The streaming services have convinced people that paying for the same product every month is the way to go. They have lied to everyone saying streaming is the same quality as a native Disc. The sad thing is most people believe that without looking into it.

It was the one pleasure purchase I allowed myself from that money. And you know what? It's easily one of the best purchases I've ever made. I bought a 40 dollar roll-up screen to hang indoors and splurged on a nice 14 foot outdoor screen for the backyard. Life-changing. I have a Xbox Series X and the Panasonic UB824, both using a LG G3. The difference is visible quite a bit with 4K discs, especially with HDR / Dolby Vision. And as you said, the Upscaler on the Panasonic is SO much better for DVDs and Blurays that is is especially good for older collections I feel. Suddenly I could watch my old Babylon 5 Discs on a big screen and it wasn't just a mushy mash anymore 😄 But also not to underestimate is the sound. The Xbox aswell as the PS5 are quite loud while playing 4K's compared to the Panasonic. That's not a problem with actionmovies, but can get annoying with more "silent" ones. Overall a very nice comparison video, can't agree more!

I bought my UB820 for £200 off ebay over a year ago and it works just fine, cleaned and updated firmware and good as new, no need to buy inferior option just go used

I’m a big fan of open box purchases. I saved $100 getting my own UB820. But you’re braver than me buying tech off eBay. I’ve had some bad experiences

Any and all recommendations are welcome so thank you. I've poked online for years now waiting for a bang-for-buck 4K player but so far not much has popped out. What I grew weary of immediately was the surplus of 4K upscaling which is just a Blu Ray player with software made to stretch 1080p movies onto the screen, masquerading as a 4K. Those should be all sent to the scrap pile for false (title) advertising. Some viewers might not care too much but I will notice. It's the artificial motion and smearing of pixels which take me out of the experience. I would not want to be that old couple with mismatched hardware trying to play their grandkids' (SD) DVDs on a 4K TV, smeared pixels, at 60fps fluid motion or whatever it's called for the brand. It makes old people suffer motion sickness and they have no clue how to navigate the menu to turn it off.

Upscaling is a big issue which is why I'm happy you can set if the X700 or UB820 will upscale DVDs / Blu Rays or send them out native. My issue is that the TV (if it is 4k) will upscale your media no matter what...and it's pretty rough. That's one of the reasons I'm so Impressed with the UB820. You won't confuse it for a 4k source at all, but it does an admirable job minimizing the upscaling artifacts.

I've got a Panasonic DMB-BDT280, there's only one output. That's gotta go to the projector but I'm going to have to blu-tooth the sound to the soundsystem. Any advice on a blu-tooth box for the Dolby DTS please? Afraid I'm a hippy & have a mix of second hand & new. Great video. 😊

Unfortunately I don’t. I haven’t used a Bluetooth box so I can’t vouch for any. But I would look for one with version 5.0 or above for low latency performance.

@@WRNFILM Thanks for your advice. Its annoying that I have more outputs on the DVD player, so I wired that in so I can get the surround sound from my DVD's. I shall suffer with my 9 speakers & 2 subs. 😁 I'm half done. The projector & screen have yet to go up.

I had a Panasonic ub820 rarely played it and after 3 1/2 years it stopped reading my discs. Cleaned my disks took care of the player I was so disappointed.

58 is amazing! Not too much. Goes through an EQ, compressor. A very light amount of BB Tubes plug in.

I have a few words of wisdom for new AV physical media files. 1) use your PS5 horizontally. The PS5 can damage your discs using it vertically all the time. I'm not sure about the Xbox Series X. 2) if you bought a TV that doesn't do Dolby Vision, skip the Sony X700 and buy the Panasonic UB820. The X700 can do DV, HDR10, and HLG but it can't do HDR10+. The UB820 does all of them. 3) Don't buy your HDMI cables from Best Buy. They overcharge, by a lot. And that's it. Actually one more, don't buy any of your electronics from Best Buy. And that's all.

Open box special or heavy clearance can be the only way to go. Remember S-video cables? They were typically $5 anywhere at the time of their (limited) use and Best Buy was selling them for around $20+tax. They still sell them despite being outmoded tech for $9 now. It'd be like buying a mini USB cable today. To charge.... what?

yea i think its crazy you cant just rent the dcp. I had 4k disk they were great but you cant rent it anywhere for a good price so now I just wach streaming movie movies in 1080p and it is still better then the theaters plus the moves cost too much and there and there not that good where i live. I have Atmos at home and it almost never gets used because all the movies are now 5.1 all the time. I thought about buying a dcp server but didnt know how to get the movies so i just gave up and im not rich but I bet i have a $20,000 theater or more in my home not and that's not bad for me poor like me wich most year im lucky if I earn $12,000 but i bet my theater could host most movie directors and sound mixers
