    What’s your DREAM “Next-Gen” physical media format?

  • @Jojken
    @Jojken 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    I want
    * Lossless video - no posterization
    * 8K 3D-or maybe 4K 3D is enough for a 130" 2.35:1 screen.
    * Scratch proof-I would like circular discs inside a square housing like old floppy discs. Disc tray can of course also fit and read regular discs
    * 100+ year lifespan
    * No region locking in the design making it impossible
    I can probably continue to fantasize, but I will stop here for now 🙂

    There’s a few ways to look at it at this day it would probably fail, mainly because the technology and TVs isn’t there yet. Maybe in like 10 years from now when they have 16 K TVs or something it would be wise to released it. Also you have to keep in mind that The majority of people are very uneducated in Image and sound quality, they prefer to stream a completely inferior version without owning it, over purchasing a higher quality experience. A lot of people that I know are shocked when they see a standard 1080p Blu-ray put the shame anything they can stream. The streaming services have convinced people that paying for the same product every month is the way to go. They have lied to everyone saying streaming is the same quality as a native Disc. The sad thing is most people believe that without looking into it.

    It's wishful thinking to hope that one day we'll have 1 disc with the theatrical verison, 3-d version, imax version, extended version, etc....
    They want to sell you every version individually. They can spread out and maximize their profits by selling them separately at full price rather than bundling them together on 1 disc. This is why I think the new LOTR 4k doesn't include special features. They're gonna re-release it in a few years and everyone will buy it again.

    Many commenters have pointed out all the commercial and technical issues of 8k discs, but I haven't seen anyone address your points about uncompressed DCPs. I am but a humble, budget consumer who has only experienced 4k discs on a mediocre 4k TV, but even with the best setups in the world I cannot imagine that these uncompressed formats will create a perceptibly better image, much less a better experience.
    When it comes to home media, the next leap forward that I am most excited for is the accessibility of larger TVs (80 inches and beyond). This, more than bit depth or millions of pixels, is what will really make the difference for us enthusiasts and the general public. I am also looking forward to a future where everyone's screen can achieve true HDR so we won't have to worry about false marketing or watching a movie "incorrectly".

    • @WRNFILM

      Totally agree that the larger and HDR accurate TVs will do absolutely WAY more to move markets. But as TV get larger & larger with typical viewing distances staying the same, there may come a time when have an uncompressed DCP could increase quality (If only marginal).

  • @budthecyborg4575

    8K Bluray needs to happen.
    First, yes 8K resolution looks that much better on a normal TV at normal viewing distance:
    "To that end, YungKyung Park, associate professor of the College of Art & Design at Ewha Womens University in Seoul, presented the results of a study in which 120 observers said they saw visible improvements in 8K images and videos over their 4K counterparts on separate 65-inch TVs positioned side by side. The observers viewed the TVs at a distance of 9 feet in dark rooms that simulated nighttime viewing conditions.
    For all images and videos, 8K performance was rated 35% higher overall. Perceived image quality increased 30% over 4K, and depth perception increased 60%, according to the study."
    Financially, physical media is the best strategy movie studios have to combat piracy, when you can sell a disk with image quality that puts any downloaded image to shame you give people tangible motivation to buy movies through official channels.

      It’s not that I’m anti 8K in all situations. It’s that I would much rather have Mezzanine delivery codec. Especially when every movie shot digitally will have to be upscale to hit 8K delivery.
      Now with Oppenheimer and other films shot on 65MM, I’d love an 8K version.

      @@WRNFILM As long as 4K is the global home theater standard then of course any new physical media format today would need to target 4K, but that's just a short term compromise when 8K is obviously the most impactful way to leverage higher data capacity.
      It's such a drag when all the equipment to shoot every movie in 8K is readily available but studios are so slow to adopt just because movie producers feel nostalgic for a blurry image.

      @@WRNFILM At this point I'm nearly convinced that the next big step in home cinema is going to be AI remasters.
      I've already dabbled in using Topaz on anime, and while I don't think it's quite good enough for live action movies yet that day is fast approaching.
      Though even after Topaz gets good enough for individuals to "want" to do an AI remaster at home, the average consumer is never going to put up with anything like this, and even for myself if the studios were doing AI remasters then buying a professionally done AI remaster will be both higher quality and way more convenient than occupying my gaming PC with a week of rendering every time I want to watch a different movie.

    Physical media PLUS ITS HARDWARE to archive/burn restore/play is a must-have, considering the ammounts of data we're getting/creating on a daily basis and hdds can't keep up, big size hdds take a long time to archive and the idea of having '10+ platters of glass with a metal alloy' in a case makes it as brittle as that movie, that needs to be rereleased in 8k (Unbreakable)
    Avg movies in cinemas [2k] are 300gb in DCP indd.
    Just want to store the ammount of data. So I don't need 1000s of discs, piles of hdds, but one little wallet of a few discs that 'holds them all' and I can retrieve from that for at LEAST 25 years before something new comes up and we can start the whole process all over again.
    20 some years ago we had DVD; find a DVD burner in a system nowadays, or BluRay burner even. Heck an BDXL burner even is harder to find for INTERNAL usage; not all WANT a USB version and, how long will that connector-standard be a standard?
    Vinyls/Shellacs of 100+ years old I can still play .. try restoring a DC2120 on new gear..
    Let us transfer all to a medium that we can trust and will STAY. Please. Even with the SD Extreme coming, I prefer something that does NOT rot away while shelved in a cubbord.

Colors are flat... and the soundtrack... might as well turn off the surround and hook up some 1993 altec lansing PC speakers from dell. I have also noticed that in streaming the Bass audio is much too loud with the compression most studios are using. Boomy bass vs walking bass lines. Big difference

    Most people can't tell the difference between 4k and 8k. Hell, most people can't tell their TV has motion smoothing on. 4k will be the limit for mainstream adoption. You can see that even 4k is struggling to become the new standard. When it comes to 200TB discs and their potential adoption, I think people just prefer having separate discs. It's nice to have a full film on 1 disc, as opposed to stretched across 2, but would I really want all 3 hobbit movies, all 3 LOTR movies, all the Extended Versions, and all the special features on 1 disc? Personally, I would not. Even if it's possible, it's just neater presentation to have "chapters" for such a release and to split it up somewhat. I don't necessarily want a hard drive on a disc.

    • @WRNFILM
      @WRNFILM  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      as someone who had a projector for years... 8k will be needed when TVs start to get up to the 120" - 150" range, eventually TVs will be so thin it will be like putting up wall paper or a poster. With that flexibility ppl will be more likely to go giant size. When you start making giant displays is when you'll want more resolution.

  • @stonesfan285
    @stonesfan285 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I just can't see it. They would have to sell completely new players and I don't even think there are any movies available at 8K currently. Pretty much all the studio masters are 2K or 4K; and I think there are a few digitally captured ones at 6K. Anything beyond 4K will never be a home video format. Studios are not going to put out the uncompressed studio master on a disc for people because then they can never make money off of that movie again. Not only that, but the discs are probably very expensive and no one is going to rebuy all their movies yet again.

    I don’t think 8k is necessary. I have a very good tv and my partner sometimes cannot tell the difference between blu ray and 4k blu ray when I play them with my good disc player. On the other hand, I myself sometimes cannot tell the difference between a really good 4k hdr streaming and my 4k blu ray. I understand that there is a difference in terms of audio quality. But I doubt I could reliably tell the difference between a good 4k disc and an 8k disc when 8k disc really comes out, given that current technology on 4k disc is already a niche with which many people cannot detect its advantages. I feel like future TVs may instead make a bigger difference.

      What I’m about to say is not a knock on you or anything but if you have a Sony, Samsung, or LG TV the difference between streaming fake 4K and a native 4K Blu-ray should be night and day, you should be able to see the difference visually instantaneously. Even a standard 1080 P Blu-ray looks better than anything you can stream. Maybe something is wrong in your settings or you have a bad Blu-ray player or something. You should really look into it because something is wrong.

I don’t get how anything you said was super relevant to my earlier comment. My main point was that I could not imagine any significantly detectable difference between 4k and 8k. If you were curious about why my partner doesn’t constantly see the improvement from blu ray to uhd, then you need to understand two things: 1) some blu rays (I have a lot of cc collections) are very well made while some UHDs are poorly made; 2) sometimes the quality of blu rays are already pretty decent and some people don’t care about the minor improvements. 95% of my quite extensive movie collections are 4k, but those facts are simply what I have observed. But I will not explain why because it’s irrelevant). Sony Bravia’s bitrate is really high. For other mainstream streaming services, they often have better coding than 4k discs. I would say uhd disc video is usually 10%-40% better than 4k streaming in my experience (and the numbers I use are by no means accurate or scientific). Physical media evolution is not a motivator (I feel) for upgrading home systems alone. Streaming and storage solutions coming together make it easy for us to have the best experience given the device or environment we are watching in. The only reason I could see people adopting this, is if there is something preparatory about it that forced them rather than encouraged them, and my mind goes straight to new forms of digital media encryption.
