Silver State Trains-Getting Back at it
I am trying to get back into filming at this time. My plan is to get a workbench built so I have a place to film and make videos until my shed is built. Still have a lot going on but progress is progress.

Well I have made the difficult decision to scrap the layout. Just not enough space, time, and people to help get it to the new house. Even if I could, it just would not work out well in our new place, just not enough space. Oh well, 4th time is the charm right???? Well here’s hoping. I have big plans for the future. I will keep you posted. This is not the end of this channel. I have some new vi...
N-Scale Layout Damage….What Happened!

Ok so what happen was…….I am moving and the layout is not being left behind. My hope was to remove the layout from the wall, add in supports and bring it with me. Now that it is off the wall, I am not so sure this is going to happen. Some of you might think I was a little rough with getting the layout out. In some ways I was. We are in a fast move and we have a whole house that needs to go and ...

Man did a few of my engines not want to play nice in the sandbox today. Surprisingly, my Athearn was not one of them. My Athearn ran beautifully today with not a single problem!! I am very excited to show off my new addition to my fleet though. The beautiful Southern Pacific Daylight set. I have always wanted this set for the longest time. I am so grateful I was finally able to make it happen. ...

I got a little more work done this weekend. I thought the mountain was a little too high so I lowered it an inch. This drop may make it look a little more realistic……or maybe not. I have not had much time to work on the layout due to travel for work and other things keeping me busy. I thought I would just do a video showing what arrived at my door the other day. Sorry for the sound. My mic died halfway through and then the sound quality changed. I am hoping my mics are not dying. We shall see. I think I got the transition fixed at the 4% downgrade on my passenger line. I cut out a good chunk of foam and put in the top part of a 2% starter. I had to shim it as I in advertently put a divot in it. So far so good. I will run this for a bit and see how it does. PO Box 2365 Gardnerville, NV 89410 Email: silverstatetrainz@gmail.com

Got a lot more work done this weekend. All the wiring is done with the exception of hooking up the switches. Still need to build the boxes for those. All in time. Hey bud! Good luck with all the work 💪
Thanks man. How’s your layout doing. Anything new?
Love the system. I’ve been using it for years. Makes car forwarding fun and realistic without the excessive paperwork. I also keep track of when I bought the car and when I last serviced it on the back of the card. Same for locos and also all the DCC CV values. Nice and simple.
That is a great idea. I keep an excel spreadsheet currently where I track all the information and a count of what I have by type. I even try to track my pre-orders if I stay current. I am looking forward to actually mounting these to my layout. One day I will get there.
Always takes time. Thanks for the update!
It sure does. Thanks for watching.
Hi Stephen. Congratulations on the move. Don't worry about the crap; Rome wasn't built in a day! Happy New Year to you and your family.
Thank you. Happy new year to you as well. I will get there one day. We have been throwing stuff away, selling or donating which makes me. Thin the beard a bit. My shed in the back yard got destroyed in the wind storms we had so now is a great time to build my large shed.
@@Silverstatetrains I hope no one was hurt! Every cloud has a silver lining.
happy new year, enjoy the next chapter of your modeling career and journey😉
Thank you. I cannot wait to get this shed built. I have the itch to build…..soon I hope.
nice!
Thanks!!
Go back to Home Depot etc. Get great stuff expanding foam Anti pest. There’s something in it they don’t like the smell or taste. Or whatever brand you wish. You need to fill the gap at the back towards the wall is where I mean. If you don’t a mouse will get in there and build his nest. They run along the wall and they can squeeze in there.
Yeah that is on my list. I bought some foam. I just need to do it. It has been cold and I have been working on some inside projects. Soon enough I will get that done.
@ anything you need to know about mouse containment let me know I’m here to help. I might make a couple videos on protecting the layout and trains from mice I’m thinking something different for a video
Steven, Happy New Year to you and your Family. I wish you good luck in your new surroundings and I've got patience enough to wait a little longer before you start your video series again. In the meantime I've been watching your past videos and taking down lots of notes before I finally decide to dive in and start building my small layout. Take your time I'll be looking forward to seeing all your new videos later this year. I'm glad you're back talk to you soon my friend. Thank you for your time Sincerely Allan Martinez
Did ya cross-member that plywood to keep it from sagging on you? One of those 2X8s running between the cabinets "I" beam style should work for ya! Hey, and bolting together milk crates make great open storage for things like those Tonka trucks! Good to see you back into the swing of things! Good luck in the new home!
I have not yet. I just ordered a new metal cabinet for some lockable storage. Once that is in I will get my bench mounted for good. Soon I hope. I cannot wait to start running trains again. I think I have like 5 or so new engines to try out.
Great you see you brother! Happy New Year!!! Workbench looks awesome! Are they RC dozers in front of the door?
Thanks. Glad to be back and filming a little. Happy new year to you as well. No those are a mix of tonka and bruder.
Cant wait to see the new Layout build! @Silverstatetrains
Welcome back! Happy New Year! Maybe time to build a metal building on your new property as a train room.
Thank you. Happy new year to you as well. I will be building a 200 sq ft stick built shed soon I hope. I have a metal shed that got jacked up in our wind storm currently that needs to go.
Great Carpentry
It’s not bad. Thank you. Wood could be attached more level but once I am ready to mount it, I can back out those screws, shim it and make it level.
Thanks for the info. That is exactly how I was going to wire my switches.
You are welcome. Glad I could help out!!
I am relatively new to model trains. I am running Kato Unitrack with DCC. I have eight switches which are of course DC. I there anything I need to do running my DC switches on DCC track? I would hate to short my system or trains on the track. Thanks, Jim
Welcome to the hobby. Be careful, it is habit forming. lol. Those Kato switches are good to go as is. The red and black wire only provide power to throw the switches. You can plug those into your DC Kato power pack so you can operate them. Just do not hook the power pack to your bus/track. I also have some videos showing how to power Kato switches on their own using the Kato switch controllers. Super easy and cheaper than most DCC options I think. Thanks for watching.
Love your track plan but it looks like quite a reach to work on anything over in the right corner. Is that DCC? I’m planning a similar design utilizing a 10 by 10 spare bedroom. Do you have other videos up?
Thank you. The back hand corner was a reach but was not too bad. I think at this point I have about 100 videos. Too many to easily count lol. Feel free to check them out. Thanks for watching!!
@ 👍
My suggestion for the outlets Is to do conduit on the outside of the walls. It’s the easiest. If you wanted it cheaper could use BX cable. For lights I would buy the shop lights from Home Depot 11$ ea crew then to the roof and plug them into an outlet screwed into your light socket. That is what I did in my basement. Cheap.
Thanks for the tip. The lights I had on my last layout were pretty reasonable and plugged into one another. Super easy. I plan on adding power to my shed so should make things easy. We shall see.
@ is the new layout going in a shed or the garage?
when is the new layout comin?
I am started with a workbench that I can film from first. I have many videos I can film there. I will start the shed build once life has calmed down or the weather….or both.
Hang in there bud
I will do my best. Thank you for the support. I appreciate it.
Hi Stephen. Starting over is a great time to put into practice what you have learned from previous builds; e.g. make bigger holes for your power bus wire! Remind us about the reason for the move.
This is true. I think I may just staple the bus wire under the layout next time. It hurt losing all that expensive wire. I found a home on land I just could not pass up. Life long dream. We only have one shot at life and I wanted to give it a go.
Nooooooo!!!!
I hear you. I really liked this layout but the next one will be even better…..and bigger. Stay tuned.
Oh boy, if I had actually started a TH-cam channel to document my N scale layout build last year I would have lost all my subscribers already. Life just happens and gets busy, family always has to come first but we're always here to share the hobby and we will still be here when you come back!
lol. I hear that. Life truly has a way of being super busy. I’m ready for it to calm down. I appreciate it. Hopefully will be back at it soon.
i do love starting fresh and have many times
Yeah I have not been shy about restarting. This will be my 4th in less than 2 years. Helps with the learning.
@@Silverstatetrains it does!
Here’s to new adventures. Shed layouts are awesome, they’re huge over in England. Please work on getting family life together first, we’re not going anywhere. We will be here when you’re ready.
I appreciate it. I am very excited to do the shed build. Will be a lot of fun to build!! Stay tuned.
Family first we understand life happens and things come up you’ll get there again with the layout. We will wait to see the new build. Until then have a great day and week
Thank you!! I appreciate the support. It has been crazy. I am ready for a sense of normal. Hopefully soon.
Sorry to hear about the disruption of you model railroad journey. What you've shared along the way was appreciated
I appreciate it. This move was for the best. Really excited about the next chapter. Hopefully will be here soon. Thanks for watching!!
How about next time you build the layout in modules that are bolted together. I have moved so many times that it is necessary to design and build a moveable layout.
I will have to watch some videos on modules. Not sure I am going that way but does not hurt to look. Thanks for the idea.
@@Silverstatetrains Think of it this way. If you had to, could you get the layout out of the house and into a U-Haul if you were required to move. How would you design it so you could?
Hi Silver State Trains , sorry to see the layout gone. Moving is a hard job. Me and wife are going to be moving in the near future. We have been here for 37 years it’s not going to be easy. But I agreed to the move if I could have my own train room and she agreed to my idea. We’re planning on getting a modular home and the Lady helping us is making sure I get my train room. I just got layout back running a couple of weeks ago. Been breaking in some new locomotives. Everything is running smoothly. If you have to start out with a small layout it’s fine. Because we all just want to run trains. My layout is a 8 x 4 . I plan to add to it. Good luck with your move and your future plans for a new layout. I’ll be looking for some updates in the future. I’m not going anywhere. You and your family have a very Merry Christmas. Thanks for sharing. Have a good week. 😎😎 👍
Glad to hear things worked out for you. 4x8 is a good size. I’m sure adding to it in the future will be enjoyable as well. I will be starting small at first but I have a big build plan which may start sooner then Later. We shall see. Merry Christmas to you and your family as well. Thank you!!
sorry to hear you had to move at such short notice, hoping all is well and this works out as a better situation for you and your family. I am not going anywhere, I will be here when you get around to being able to get back to your TH-cam channel, but in the meant time, take care of yourself and loved ones. See you soon!
Thank you for the kind words. The move went well, just was a lot of work. Hope to back up and running soon.
Hi Silver State Trains & it's is Randy and i like yours video is Cool & Thanks Silver State Trains & Friends Randy
Thanks Randy. Happy Holidays.
Moving and Hemerorids have similar characteristics 😮
LMAO!!! So true.
Starting over is always a pain in the ass... It's nice that you could make the move before the holidays. Something you may want to give some serious thought to is making your next layout modular. If you're ever faced with a situation like this again they're so much easier to tear down and even reconfigure to fit the new spaces or expand. But you and the family have a good holiday and I look forward to what you come up with next!
So true. This was a rough move. Still dealing with issues but we are getting there. I will have to look into the module builds. My plan thus far are another permanent build but noting is set in stone. Have a good holiday as well!!
We will be here!! Im not going anywhere. Get your family back together 1st.
Thank you!! I hoping to get a work bench built soon so I can at least film and run some trains again.
No rush brother!! @Silverstatetrains
You got this!
Thank you!!
You are going to have to do a multiple layer layout.
If my dream of building g a large 200 sqft shed comes true, I would build a single level layout with different elevation. That should be more than enough track for my needs. I forget what they are called but the round track ladders needed to get from one level to the next I hear are problematic though that is hearsay at this point. Could just do a drop track but not sure of the need at this point. Once I start designing the track maybe I will see things differently.
If And When You Rebuild Think About it Very Hard.
Oh yeah. I have been thinking of layout ideas and things I would do differently. I am ready to start building already. Lol
Looking forward to seeing you after the move and establishing of a new layout! Happy holidays to you and your family!
Thank you!! Me too. Have some plans just need time to get them going. Little by little though. One thing is for sure, if my plan works out, it will be a big layout!!
Thank you for showing me that you can use the Kato power pack solely for the switches. I’m new to the hobby and I recently got a DCC controller. So I was scared to use both systems together.
You are welcome!! Welcome to the hobby. Warning…..it is a lot of fun and addicting. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
It would be nice if Kato made DCC turn outs. I have one DCC turn out by Bachmann and it’s wireless. It gets the signal right from track power. I’m kinda spoiled by that now 😂
That is cool. I did not know about those. That would be a great add on.
Hi, interested in your buss wire connectors. What are they and where can I get them ? Thanks in advance. John
Amazon-HKS 100PCS T-TAP Wire Connector Quick Splice Disconnect Yellow 14-12 AWG - Self-Stripping Electrical Wire Terminals Kit Automotive Crimp Insulated
Best wishes! Salvage the track; redesign a new layout in the new space. Make it modular. Then you’re ready for whatever happens in future. Thanks for your hard work & teaching.
Thank you for the kind words. Track is all saved and I am ready for my next adventure. Hopefully it will be here sooner than later.
You've got this!!
Thank you!!
Borrow some 7th grade boys, they'll loosen all that benchwork for ya !
Even if I can get help moving it out, into a truck and out of the truck, I just don’t have the space for it in my new place
With all due respect, scrap it and start fresh.
Yup. That is my plan. Really my only choice. 4th time is the charm…….i hope lol.
When I saw you working the crow bar I wish that you would have tried to push it instead of pulling. That is if you could manage to get it in between the plank and the wall. This should give more leverage. Anyway glad you managed to get it done. Best of luck with the moving and the model railway hobby.
I tried both ways. Not enough room to push. It worked out though with now damage to the walls. I will build a new layout again. To addicting to let it sit. Thanks!!
Good luck with the move. Going to Oregon? Wasn't sure. Thats where I moved to from CALI. What I have done is keep small portions of all my layouts for the new one. Plus lots of photos. I am starting my new build in Oregon soon! Getting the garage set up!
I am staying local. Just a new older home on land. More space now well except for the garage part. Good luck on the new build. I really enjoy the building part.
I helped a friend move years ago we wound up cutting his layout into sections stripping the benchwork and switch machine off just leaving the top. Then we built all new benchwork it is standing and running 20years later. We are planning on moving in a year or 2 so I'm building everything modular now
Not a bad idea. That is the nice thing about building with Kato unitrack. Just take it apart and bring it with you. I am only out the cost of the wood, foam and wire. Still a loss but the track and feeder wires are all reusable.
Wow so sorry you have to do this to this beautiful layout. I have had to do this in the past and it did not survive. I sure hope yours does.. would like to see you running again.. good luck..
Thank you. Is what it is unfortunately. Layout is gone at this point and I will rebuild once the dust settles. Hopefully will get my last video out soon from the old house.
I stopped watching at 4:10. I cannot watch what happens! Man oh man. 😅😢😂 Great luck with new house and your move bud
lol. Yeah it was complete destruction. Oh well. I will build again. Thanks!! The move went. Just trying to get back to a sense of normal now.
This is one reason I’ve been hesitant to start a build. We’re hoping to retire, sell the house, and full-time RV in a year or so. I’d need to sell or store a layout. Still thinking about a small layout, though. Good luck with the move!
2' by 3' n scale could travel with you.
What would be a great idea for you would be to build a small travel switching layout. Could be 1x3, 1x4, something like that. Switching layouts have a lot of action and would be a lot of fun to make and operate. Steve’s trains did a great video on making a travel size layout which would be perfect for the RV travel lifestyle. Just a thought.
Hi Stephen. My thinking is that you have invested too much time to scrap this layout. If you want to move it in one piece, you are going to need a minimum of four other guys (each end of the move) to get it in and out of the truck.
Unfortunately there is just no way to use this layout at my new place so it has to go. I will rebuild again. 4th times the charm right…..
