What's next to run the flail chopper? The Farmall 460 replacement just might surprise you.
It's such a beautiful fall day to do some work outside. The weather has been dry enough lately to finally move the round bales that have been sitting outside in rows, inside under cover to the upper addition. Then I have a decision to make. What tractor am I going to attempt to power the New Holland crop chopper with since the Farmall 460 is in the shop torn apart. After weighing all my options with each eligible tractor, I settle on the New Holland TC35DA. With its Hydrostatic transmission I feel it's the most logical option. So, I put my theory to the test and see how it goes. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well it ran the chopper. I wait till chore time to put the wagon load of green chop in with the cattle. I finish out the day with some evening chores and a broiler chicken update. Enjoy the video and thanks for watching.
We are a small 40 acre direct-to-consumer livestock farm located in Western NY. We provide pasture raised beef, pork, chicken & eggs to our local community. We practice sustainable land practices that utilize natural methods to keep our soils/pastures healthy and our animals happy.
I am the 2nd generation to live on this piece of property after my parents purchased it in 1978. As a child we were not a working farm. But there were dairy farms surrounding us. So naturally I was hooked with farming since I saw my first tractor. As time went on, I worked for a couple of these farms and that only fueled my love of agriculture. In 2019 I was able to move back home as my parents were ready to downsize and I was ready to try my hand at farming. Stacy and logan share the same love of farming as I do. Stacy growing up on her family's dairy farm and logans exposure of farming/tractors at a very young age. Join us on this journey and see where the farm life takes us.

After the pain staking task of replacing the water pump on the Ford 1720 compact tractor, its time to replace a couple tilt cylinder hoses on the loader and change the engine oil and filter on the tractor. Morning , how often do u have to fill the water for the broiler chickens ? Just wondering , I used that before and they went through the water but it was nipple drinkers .

    • @Cobbhillfarms
      @Cobbhillfarms 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      When the birds are at butcher weight, they will drink a 5-gallon pale down twice a day. Mostly just have to top them off up till that point. The one drinker that is faded bad is junk and is going in the garbage after this season. Sadly, it's the newest of the two drinkers. I ordered a Plasson drinker just like the other one from Hog Slat. When it showed up it was in a no name box and was obviously not a Plasson brand drinker as it was not constructed the same as the other drinker. Two months ago, the weighted bottom broke off of it and it doesn't work correctly anymore. So, I am just getting though the season with it then will replace it next spring with another Plasson drinker. I have been happy with the original one I got. Works flawless.

    Metric, so it's a rebadged what? We have the same NH TC35DA as you and it's been a great tractor. We've overworked it and it's held up well, not bad for a rebadged LS.

    • @Cobbhillfarms
      @Cobbhillfarms 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The TC series tractor is not a rebadged LS tractor They were made by the Shibaura machinery corporation in Japan. The LS version of New Holland didn't come till somewhere in 2012 or 13. I was working at a New Holland dealer as a service tech through that transition. I was less than impressed with the ls version. That partnership with ls only applied to the compact tractor line I think like 45 hp and less.

    I have to remind myself there are places where it's not 90 degrees every day. Seeing you with sleeves proves it. Always fun to see someone move bales with over the bucket forks on a tractor. Glad you are feeling better.

      @@CobbhillfarmsYes south Florida. We had a few rain bands but the hurricane did no damage as it was not close by. Once it moved north it got very hot and dry here. We are still having 85 degree temps here at night.

    Good stuff Matt. Since i live in alabama, our paths probably wont ever cross, so all i can do tell you in the comments that i love your content no matter how many videos you put out. Quality over quantity always wins in my opinion. And the farm comes first. You do whats best for the life youre working towards. Take care👍

    Nobody should ever criticize you leaving your mechanic job to farm and the fact that you are driving a school bus to continue your pension I applaud you. I retired almost 3 years ago from NY with my pension at the age of 51. I am still working but doing the work that I’ve always wanted to do. Good for you!!

    Matt of the hundreds of farm videos out there I only follow three of them. Few acres Farm, Country View acres and Cobb Hill farms. Your videos are about the best defiantly in my top two. Please keep up the great work, don't be so hard on yourself, when I come home after a 10-hour day in a steel plant, ( I am almost 70) one of the first things i do is check in on you, your labor does not go unnoticed.

    In the next few years me and dad are gonna get into some cattle, and we’ve decided that if we cut hay, rake it, let it dry, and then chop it with a chopper we want to buy, it could still work with a flail chopper. then after we figured out after watching old promo films, that we could blow the chopped hay into the barn loft, it’s dry so it’s not as heavy as fresh chaff, it would be like straw bales. So if you’re looking for a better solution for feeding your cattle that idea isn’t that hard to figure out! You could even use a bale elevator or an auger to throw your crop into the loft.

      The only thing I'm trying to figure out how I want to feed out is the fresh green chop. Feeding/ storing dry hay in round bale form works well for our farm. The way you described sounds similar to how some of the Amish store their dry hay around here still. If that's what is good work for you than that's great. Thanks for the comment and watching the channel.

      @@Cobbhillfarms yeah. Green feed operations you almost need that self feed trailer, or a creep feeder out in the pasture. I live in the south western part of Manitoba CA so the winds are extremely strong here and would knocked down a stave silo that’s newly built.

      @@30acreshop_time Oh I can see where that would be a problem for sure. I'm guessing concrete bunk silos are popular in your area? They are with all the large dairy farms around here.

      @@Cobbhillfarms yeah, there’s a large dairy farm around my area and they have a harvestore silo and a few bunks.
