This is the third test runt of the bike, in the second test i blow the cylinder head gasket. Now the gasket is replaced and I adjusted the pilot screw and raised the needle to it's highest position, and the bike runs better on idle speed and got better throttle respons. Now I need to adjust the carb more serious.

    We used have some CB250N's on the fleet when i was a motorcycle courier in London around 87/88, they are without a doubt one of the worst bikes ive ever ridden, so underpowered in stock form, terrible brakes and bad handling, like the engineering involved in this, but can't think why you would start with such a lemon of a bike.🤷‍♂

      I'm not a pro on superchargers and turbos but you could run a AMR300 with out a intercooler if you not have to high boost preasure. The question is what you looking for, maximun power or like me, just increase the power and tourqe a bit and create a cool bike. My suggestion if you do a build a blow tru so you got the supercharger with a plenum before carb or throttle body, I think this i a lot easier to map or jet instead of draw tru. If you go for max power i think lovering the compression is a must. Do you have fuelinjection of carbs on you bike? If you have fuelinjection is it possible to map the stock fuelinjection on the bike? Last but least, this will take time and coast alot of money. I'm on my third season of testing and jetting and now I have got the bike running pretty good. I will soon do a new video but I still wailt on a custom made brakedisc to the wire wheels I going to put on my bike.

      So I race a destroked xr200 compound turbo bike and honestly it's the one cylinder predecessor to this engine. They can take alot of power it's the trans that's gonna give you problems. 100whp shouldn't be an issue for the engine side but the clutch and output shaft won't hold. I can't say I pushed one of these so idk exactly but iv been in enough of these engines and it follows Mr Hondas rule of 300%. That's about what the trans can take and the clutch with some springs frictions and milling the basket for an extra friction with steel. Its possible to make everything very strong though. My bike recently got past 100whp with 155cc and a crap ton of boost I'm actually running a stock set of shafts this year but I added a bearing and support where 3rd gear used to be and this seems to stop the flex and keep the hardened gears with all their teeth. To the guy with this bike I saw you say you wanted to lower the Cr don't I'm running 14:1 and over 60psi on e85. Add water injection and leave it at 9:1. If you add a spacer in the basegasket youl ruin the quench area and have detonation at no power. Do have a way to pull timing but also keep in mind these tiny cylinders are great at fighting knock by virtue of being small. The flame front has to cover less ground in the same time to normal sized engines. Less time for pressure spikes to ignite pockets. If anything tighten it up for the best quech area you can get the better mixing will do more for fighting the knock than Cr ever could and won't cost power. Cams the stock ones are tiny. I actually use yours as doners for my custom cam bigger base circle to start and it almost fits and I get two from each cam. You can cut the base circle down and what you take off there will double in lift just wrap a sand paper roll around half the cam lobe on the base circle side and do the back and forth on a vise until you get the spec you want. Take your time and check often. This is worth a good 10hp on these bikes. As for carb go bigger that thing is restrictive to start off with. From experience your gonna want a 38-45mm carb. Look for something in the slide family not the CV you have. The CV is actually better but if you choose to do that you really need to know those carbs as your gonna need to change most things in it including the slide bleed hole and spring, pilot jet possibly the pilot circuit, main jet, emoltion tube, needle, likely air jets too. That's why I say get a slide carb it's just less to do and know. Do add a stiffer spring the extra vac tends to stick them open with the stock ones. Awesome project love the drive. I would consider adding a jack shaft and moving the blower so you can have a better intake.. that one might be lean but pudding fuel on short pulls look rich until they clear out. Never have a p trap in it basically. If you must do it atleast convert to e85 so it can vaporize easier.

      @bolarsson2385 ปีที่แล้ว

      This project was mostly done for fun not maximum power, I think it possible to get a bit more power with not so much work. I'm sure that the transmission will take alot of power, I think the clutch are the same as XR650, and the gearbox are the same as the 400N so it will handle a bit over 40 hp. I really would like to place the supercharger in the centre of the bike where the stock carbs are but it's not possible because of the center piece of frame, in that case I have to cut in the frame. About to rise the boost I have thoughts about that with out lowering the compression and in that case use water injection, I started to experiment with water injection that but I wait to get a pump that I think will be able to use from a friend. I would also be very cool to have a water tank with a skull sticker and the warning of methanol 😉 About the carb, I tried a HSR42, a FCR, a CR33 but it's not work the engine leans out under acceleration even with the HSR and FCR pumper carbs. I talked with some people that have done draw tru superchargers and they say that CV carbs is best to use. I have put a Mikuni ACP-1 accelerator pump on my CV carb and I have also grind throttle needles to my carb and it's runs better now. This winter I have moved the nozzle to the accelerator pump from the carb to the inlet to see if that will give better throttle response when the fuel will be injected nearly the intake valves. Now I wait to the spring to arrived so I can do a test ride.

      @@bolarsson2385 just throwing this out there from my experience 40hp is cake to get. My first turbo setup did it with 18psi. I dont think supercharging is the way. I understand lag but singles have a very strong exhaust pulse. If you compare pressure waves to 4 cylinder engines youl see the spike at the beginning of the exhaust stroke is more than 3x the 4cy. With 155cc I had 18psi by 2krpm and if I gagged it anything over 4k it would get the boost needle to 18 as fast as you can open the throttle. The things youl find are most do's to get that power through are clutch and primary ratio. We first swapped to a cfr230 primary as it's a solid 30% taller primary and that means 30% less tq through the clutch. I wanna say with an extra friction and steel this worked great just doesnt like 10k 2step then clutch dump but roll on power it can take 40whp no problem. Any xr200 motor or crf230 would be a great starting point for that. I love the hsr personally but it sounds like you were running the bowl dry. I'd start looking for a restriction in the fuel system and I'd start at the petcock. Hard to flow more than 20hp through it continuously and the bowl acts as a reservoir in between when it flows more. The hsr needle and seat it fine for 140hp worth of flow out of the box. I actually ran one for years with good results until I started getting wild and way off the deep end. These days I run a yoshi mjn as I found too many benefits to it.

      Yes my engine is stock inside I was thinking about lower compression with a aluminium spacer between the crankcase and the cylinders but that will also change the camshaft timing so I you need to grind the holes in the camshaft gear to get it right if you rise the cylinders. I might will be on the limit with the boost pressure if I not lower the compression but instead I have plans to try to make a water injection system. I don't remember exactly what the gearing ratio on the supercharger but it's something about1:1,7 and then I got about 0,6 bar boost pressure.

    Have you heard of a carburetor manufacturer called SmartCarb? Their carbs are special because they can automatically tune themselves by adjusting the air:fuel ratio based on changes in air density, so once you have it setup perfectly it will always perform at its best no matter what the atmospheric conditions may be. smartcarbfuelsystems.com/about/

    • @bolarsson2385
      @bolarsson2385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it got more power. Now I use the stock CV carb on the bike compleded with a Mikuni ACP-1 accelerator pump. I haven't still flat it out, but I got about 0,65 bar in boost at 7000 rpm with almost wide open throttle. When I run the superchager in a draw thru application the throttle position will change the boost pressure beacuse the throttle will choke the superchager at low lift. I think I now got somewhere between 45-50 hp from this 250 engine at full throttle.

    It needs to be over driven s bit more! More boost! 1.25:1 to 1.5:1, 2:1 (double crank speed) may be a bit spicy! I'm thinking about putting one on a 88cc engine, running around 5-8psi, maybe 10-14!

    Nice motorcycle, what kind of Afr gauge you use, wideband or narrowband? I have turbocharged cb400n (you can find video on my channel) but i still need to do some final tuning and i need to use afr gauge for that. What kind of boost you're making i have wastegate set to 0.5bar but turbo in my setup can easily provide above 1bar.

    • @bolarsson2385
      @bolarsson2385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I use an wideband Innovate MTX-L, had an AEM that I bought two years and had it it laying in the box but it show out that the meter was broke out of the box. Had to buy a new one and then I choose Innovate. I have about 0.7 bar but I haven't flat it out yet ;) When I use the supercharger in draw thru application the boost will variate depending of the throttle position. I think something around 0,7 bar i max boost without lowering compression. What turbo do you use? Where have you take out the pressured oil line to feed oil to the turbo? Do you run the turbo in blow thru or draw thru? If you run blow thru what fuel pump do you use to get the fuel in the carbs pressured? My next project will be an 1979 CB250N with turbo.

      @@bolarsson2385 Sorry for late reply, i used kp35 turbo from fiat 1,3jtd, vz21 would be much better (especially if you want to turbo 250cc) but it's more expensive. I run blow through setup with original carbs and i use boost referenced fuel pressure regulator and pump from chinese gy6 fuel iniected scooter. I took pressurized oil line from where oil pressure sensor originally was. The only problem that i had was that oil is heated too much by turbo and i had to install oil cooler but in 250 this problem may not occur.

    • @bolarsson2385
      @bolarsson2385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that the Nighthawk and the CB250/400N is very similar, I think that the bottom part of the engine is much the same it's just difference in bore and stroke between thoose bikes. I had some thougts to put cylinder, pistons, cylinderhead and chamshaft from a CB400N to this engine but it will only give me about 50 cc extra volume and it semmes not worth all the work for that when I had to mill of the cylinder to fit the shorter stroke on CB250 chrankshaft.

    • @Bugalona
      @Bugalona 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bolarsson2385 I believe the nighthawk is a variation of the cb400t hawk, which I imagine is very similar to a cb400n, which I'm not sure if we got that in the states. I have since looked at my bike since watching this video and the engines are pretty close. shortstroke -big bore parallel twin would be super cool though. Greetings from Kentucky!

    • @bolarsson2385
      @bolarsson2385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with the other carbs was that the engine leans out under acceleration, you have to open the throttle very precisely to not lean out the engine so is dies and it still runs very lean, I think the HSR42 and FCR37 is way to big for this bike and mabye a smaller pumper carb like a Mikuni TM32 could help this lean out. The CR33 is the best throttle carb so far and I have orderd a new needle jet so I will give the CR33 a second chance when I got the new jet. I still think I the 29 mm CV carb is the best choise for this bike and I will give some more work it to see if I could get it run better.

    • @bolarsson2385
      @bolarsson2385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@obbezwiers I don't think an airbox will make a big difference to the other throttle carbs, I was worried to not use an airbox or velocity stack to the CV carb but it works with out airbox. I think I got stronger vaccum with the supercharger draw thru the carb than the stock engine sucking thru the carb. I will test to weight the throttle with led to get a little slower raise of the throttle I think that will help to get the engine a little bit richer under acceleration.

    I run the bike on regular fuel 98 octane in this clip but I think it will also work with 95 octane because I have a moderate boost, just about 0.4 bar at 10000 rpm. My plans for this build is not to get maximum effect from the engine because I want reliability instead of max effect.

This project has been going on for over two years now and it was really nice to take a short test run before the winter to know that there's hope that this build will work, just a couple weeks after this video was recorded we got the first snow here. I will continue the build this winter with new exhausts, a new rear fender and alot of other things on the bike.
