In 1979 when I was 16 I got my drivers license. My first car was a green 1975 Pontiac Astre hatchback. It had a AM/FM and 8 track player. The car was a POS and used oil constantly but I was happy just to have a car and my freedom.

For anyone owning or needing to drive an older car, I want to point out that the engine run-on the gentleman here forewarned of, and then happened when he shut-down the engine. It's called engine-run-on and also known as engine dieseling or just, dieseling. Dieseling is most accurate because the key is off, so the spark plugs aren't firing but the engine is running--it's running on compression like a diesel engine, and it's burning small amounts of gas coming through the carburetor and built-up unburned carbon remaining in the engine. And while the run-on/dieseling is happening it sounds like a diesel engine and the exhaust stinks to high heaven, sometimes smoking from the tailpipe would occur and the sound, smell, and sight of the black smoke was awful. The problem went away as auto manufacturers engineered and perhaps even reengineered things. As well, higher octanes of gasoline were brought onto the market helping the situation. To resolve the problem permanently: Buy several tanks of a good brand of Premium Grade of gasoline, that would in an octane range of 92-93 Octane, such as Shell V-Power gasoline. As well, the engine should have a carbon removal service, replace the spark plugs, and the engine air filter too. Lower on the page here, I give instructions on how to get the engine to turn off. Historically, when our nation (USA) transferred over to unleaded gas in the early 1970s, cars were doing the engine-run-on or dieseling thing, like crazy! What we experienced back then was an annoyance because the dieseling could last a long time or even longer. People would be knocking on their neighbor's door to tell them that their car was running. Sometimes when shopping it wasn't uncommon to hear an announcement coming over the store PA system, the message stating a license plate number, a description of a car, and then the words--your engine is running. While we don't have this problem anymore, (save for the gentleman in the video here) if you own an old car, or you have to be driving someone else's old car- Here's what to do if you turn-off the engine and the engine keeps running. Don't turn the key back to On or Run, because in the following steps you're going to stall the engine to get it to stop running. Instead, put the key to the Off position, Not Lock, then hold-down the brake pedal and put the car into Drive. If the engine is still running, keep it in Drive and now add Turning the Steering Wheel, as that is an attempt to get the power steering load to stall the engine. If the engine is still running, now add Turning-On the Air Conditioning, to try stalling the engine with the load of the A/C Compressor, and don't forget to keep the car in drive and keep turning the steering wheel. If the engine is still running, now add Turning-On the High-Beam Headlights, as this is an attempt to stall the engine by putting a load on the alternator in turn adding to the load on the engine. If the engine is still running, you're running out of options, so continue by turning on as many electrical things as you can. The rear defogger uses a lot of electricity, add the windshield wipers, the 4-way flashers, operate the power windows. If the engine is still running after all that--Lock-up the car and walk away. Many of us gave up that way during this phenomenon in the early 1970s. Why did the fairly modern car in the video have this trouble? The reason is there's something wrong with the car. Though I want to point out that his engine shut-down quickly so the systems that had been built into his era of car to advert dieseling/run-on, worked. I understand what's wrong with this gentleman's car. Remember he mentioned the rattling sound that comes and goes? I recognized that as being a broken catalytic convertor. And that's putting back pressure into the engine. And that back pressure is creating an intense heat building up in certain areas of the engine. It gets so hot that when he shuts-down the engine, a short dieseling/run-on syndrome is taking place. I know that era of Chrysler products well and I'm certain that he buys the cheapest gas he can find and that's created a damaging circle as persistent use of cheap gas causing an excessive heat condition fractured the material the catalytic convertor. And the back pressure is caused in part by a blockage of fractured material inside the catalytic convertor, (think something like broken pieces of cement) and also there's a second blockage from broken material that passed from the catalytic convertor through the exhaust piping that has lodged into the muffler. The Check Engine Light should be on due to a ruined Oxygen Sensor from excessive heat, though I didn't notice it. The car/truck pretty much shouldn't be driven, though driven gently it will last a while. What's needed is an entire exhaust system, brand-new of course. That's from the engine to the end of the tailpipe. I hope someone stands up to do what's needed. It would be a shame for a nice car/truck like this to become forgotten in waiting and ultimately lost to the elements.

Bought one new in January of that year. It had 88 miles on it. Sold it in July of 2014. It had in the vicinity of 460 thousand miles on it (the odometer wasn't working, so final estimate was based on my known driving habits.) It ran rough by then and had extensive rust, but certainly didn't owe me anything.

Well known and documented issue with the temp gauge itself. If you look around the internet, there is a quick fix for this (which I've done countless times) with a short strip of wire and a quick solder you're back in business with a MUCH more responsive and accurate "gauge." Nice looking car. Those are "Virgo" wheels (which will be stamped Germany or Norway) which are 15" as compared to the factory 14" steel wheels. Best thing about that car is the manual transmission. Thanks guys.

P0501 is a code for bad vehicle speed sensor. This car has two speed sensors: one in the transmission that provides (iirc) the signal for the speedo in the dash cluster, and an ABS sensor + tone ring on the passenger side, even in cars without ABS, that provides a speed reading to the ECU. It's (very likely) the ABS sensor, sensor wiring or (perhaps) tone ring that's busted.

I think you need to check the sender unit for temp gauge or upgrade to a g.l.t. instrument panel with working gauges and tachometer as well. If the temp gauge is working you have a problem 🤔
