I ask cause I have a Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 IS (mark 1)….and live about 90 minutes from you. Hey, first off thanks for watching! I have rented the 400mm f2.8 in the past and loved it. I use the 300mm simply because the deal was too good to pass up and 1/4 of the cost of a 400 at the time! I might take you up on that in the future. Thank you again for watching!

    Appreciate the video...good info. As far as terminology, transition that over to Hitter's or Attacker's. Pin Hitters are going to come off of the left or right side and the middle is actually called a Middle Blocker. Basically the Hitters (person) are Attacking (action). Good stuff though!

      Roughly, I am setting my overall exposure. Often I hit AUTO first to get an idea of a start. Usually drop the shadows to 0, bump the contrast, adjust the highlights usually down a tad. When it comes to the colors, I make sure the red is true as possible. I adjust the orange a tad down on saturation and the reason for that is the yellow bounces off of the floor logo and turns the players legs orange. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for the video. I have been spending more time using the (Sony) 85mm f1.8 for volleyball as I am usually on / near the sideline and more importantly with the poor gym lighting in most venues the f1.8 allows me to get more light in and keep the shutter speed at 1/800 or 1/1000 without excessive ISO. The rest of the time I am using a 70-180mm f2.8. I am interested in trying the Sony 135mm f1.8 GM for volleyball as well.

      The 135mm GM is my favorite for volleyball. It works great, and even if you pull back to 2.0 to get a bit more in focus, at 1/500-1/640 you can usually still get good ISO results.

    Good lens discussion….. on one of the most challenging sports to photograph my opinion. I have found from the opposing end, 135mm is a great focal length, if on my 70-200 I’m usually around that, I do like using the 135 prime then just focus (no pun intended haha) on composition / keep up the content 👍

      @@DLivingstonAgreed. If you're using a DSLR like a 5D/1D you can focus on the legs and hold, but Canon's improved face AF cleans up a lot of net distractions in both VBall and soccer. There are a lot of impediments to shooting volleyball, but one advantage is that the action will occasionally repeat in a given focal plane.

    I’m saving up for a 70-200 2.8 but currently I have a 75-300, 28-135, and an 18-135. I have a canon rebel t5 and a t7. I’ve done one volleyball game and ISO was 6400, shutter was 1/1200 and aperture was f/5.6. Any tips on what I should try and aim for or what lens would be better? The lighting is also really rough, the pro photographer for the university I shoot for even says he hates shooting in this gym because of the lighting.

    • @DLivingston
      @DLivingston 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Gym lighting is really bad in most places. If you can look into the canon 50mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8z both are cheaper lenses bought used but will handle the lighting much better. No zoom but if you can find a spot on the floor that you can sit, you can make both of those work decently well.

      I have this same issue! I've recently started practicing sports photography by shooting at my daughter's youth volleyball games, but the gym lighting is terrible! I've recently upgraded from the EOS R6ii to the R5ii, but I still have the RF 24 - 105 mm at f4 - f7.1. I also have the RF 100 - 400 mm at f5.6 - f8, but I use the 24-105 because of the faster aperture. I quickly realized I need at least a f2.8 to get any type of worthy images.

    I'm a dad of a couple of sports kids (soccer and track). Typically, I shoot during the day, so i don't have a lot of experience with night games ... but i will be shooting a few. Do you see a downside to full manual settings (no auto ISO)? I also have an R6, and the one time I shot at night, I felt like the camera was wildly changing the ISO. As you said, you get some latitude in post to lighten or darken. I think that might be better than auto ISO.

    • @DLivingston
      @DLivingston 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Auto iso is going to be crazy at night since it’s going to be grabbing the dark background and trying to adjust for all of that. You could try aperture priority and set the iso where you’re comfortable to get the shutter speed you want. I’ve done that quite often and it seemed to work well.

    The general standard you'll see with a lot of pros for field sports is a combination of 400/2.8 and 70-200/2.8. There's a big enough gap between 400 and 200 to transition between the two if the action is coming at you. I agree that a 24-70 is only really good if you're getting candids on the sidelines. I will tell you that when I had a 300, before my 400, I often found myself unable to transition fast enough between my two camera bodies as the 300 was so close to 200. Another great option is a 120-300/2.8. The zoom range is excellent for football (except when they're on the other side of the field). When I'm using that lens, I often just carry around one camera body.

    I’m just starting out. And am on a budget-ish. Recently got the Canon EOS R50. The lens I have at the moment it’s the stock lens and a EFS 55-250mm. I’m only 27 secs into the video trying this so maybe your answer is in the video. Or if not. What lens would you recommend to replace the stock lens. I like the 55-250 for the range when I’m on the sideline but for the warm up shots or even the players and coaches on the sideline, I want a better lens for that range but I’m also on a budget at the moment.

      I think that camera is a RF mount so any of the lenses I link in my description outside of the 300mm. For budget friendly, the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 would be a good lens to start with. Or the Canon RF 35mm f1.8. But a lens that would be great in many cases a 70-200mm f2.8 or F4 would be good. You can use ebay to find good used gear as well.
