BIG NEWS || While having fun with Ice Cream!
Well our news is out and we are EXCITED!
We are MOVING and this is our last video freeze drying at what has been our home for nearly 12 years!
Our appreciation is beyond words for your adventures with us so far but now we get to travel to further lands and start new projects and ideas. With any hope we can continue to share all of it with you all! Please excuse the rough edit of this video as I lost my regular editing software and hope that the next time we share a video I will have a better and new program to use!
For our last cycle, we have going in today:
Ice Cream Sandwiches
Greek Yogurt Ice Cream Bars
Things to take away from this video cycle:
1. Prepare for your move before you even think you are moving because you will never be prepared or feel like you will get it completed.
2. Ice Cream Sandwiches were one of the easiest, fastest and best outcome we have had overall without a doubt.
3. I feel like doing the wafer side up and down really made a difference in comparison to other outcomes I have seen.
Again, thank you for coming along for the beginning stages of our channel and we look forward to doing more videos and starting fresh with new hope and love ahead of us.
We truly are 'BETTER THAN I DESERVE" and once we get settled (2000+miles) and praying our belongings and vehicles make it out in one piece we will be back as soon as possible!
So happy to be here and have you watching! If you are looking for links for products used, see below! Love to you all out there and we look forward to seeing you in the next video!

    Do you need to replace the absorber each time you open the bag and close it back? And what do you prefer instead of the ziploc bag?

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! So sorry for my delay - in this case I only used that ziploc to show the breastmilk and what it looked like going through the different stages. I would usually use the regular Mylar bags that I seal our products in regularly. Then you can just tenderly massage the bag to powder it down. When it comes to the oxygen absorber, if you are keeping your items sealed in a mylar bag and opening it every so often to get other product out as long as you were quick, I feel like you would not need to replace it but if you were going to just clip it and close it, that wouldn’t be enough to retain freshness. iIt would need to put it into some other type of vacuum, sealed container or just air locking Container if you were going to be using it quickly. Hope this helps, but let me know if you have further inquiries ♥️

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Contrary to many other freeze dryer pages I have not changed the settings on our unit 🫠 in other words I just put things in and run a cycle, no temperature changes on my part. Pretty much the main difference I see is amount of time that it takes which is always different depending on how much moisture something has, and how long it takes to dry. Hope this helps but let me know if you have other questions 🤩

    How long did you set for the Breast milk? How many hours?

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry about my delay! Our total time was about 36 1/2 hours of run time and I had checked it midway when it said it was done and ended up at that longer time. Which to be honest happens often. Why it is always necessary to double check before really digging in. I did see somebody on here give advice of when you’re freeze drying and the cycle thinks it’s done let it stop, take it out weigh it, run it for one more hour and if you see any amount of decrease in the weight, you know that it’s still losing moisture and then just to keep checking like that. It is one of the longer cycles we have done, that’s for sure! Thanks for watching!

    Can you use a food dehydrator and get the same result? Just wondering the freezer dryer is expensive on Amazon

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great question. I would imagine that yes you could and would get a similar consistency as a powder but when it comes to the nutritional value I feel there would not be much. The freeze dryer provides different methods that the dehydrator cannot replicate. I understand the price, it was a serious investment! Let me know if you hear of anyone using a dehydrator so I can better educate myself ♥️

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Sorry for my delay, TH-cam is not notifying me when comments are coming through. Anyways 🤩 If you are referring to when the trays came out and I was testing to verify completion, if your food/product feels cold to the touch it still has moisture in it, therefore needing more time. Now feeling the bottom of the tray is a different story. I usually try to defrost them, but sometimes forget about selecting that option 🤦‍♀️😅 human error and that’s why I usually only gage completion based on, in this case, the milk feeling ice cold or like nothing. Let me know if that cleared it up, I can try to reword that! Thanks for watching!

    Hi I'm just wondering what the room temperature is like when you're doing this? Did you have any issues with the frozen bricks melting too fast before transferring them to the trays?

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! At this point when doing these cycles we were in our basement (standard below level basement) usually about 68° roughly. Low humidity overall and doing this in early fall season. Amazingly, we did not have issues with the prep for this cycle or the later ones. Not sure of your location but if you are having melting issues take into account the humidity, that might be causing some problems. If humidity is not a factor I might recommend gathering all of your “bricks” cut off the tops right below the ziploc and have them standing cut side up and keep them in the fridge as you are prepping them. At which point you could slide them out evenly onto your trays when you are ready to go or after you have them on the trays throw them back into your freezer to make sure they are good and solid before starting a cycle. Whew…that was a hefty response 😅 sorry so wordy! Thanks for inferring and let us know how it goes or if you have questions!

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know there are a lot of things that you can do to customize the machine to what you want but we have not changed any settings on the freeze dryer to dry anything it’s more been about changing and adjusting how long we freeze and dry. With my limited experience I feel like the lower the temperature for drying probably the more nutrients are kept in your food, but I do not have experience with that low of a temperature so far.

    How many capsules should an average person take. I am a big meat eater

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am so sorry that it took me a while to get back to you. This is a very important question! We just moved across country and I have not been good about checking since we have relocated. If you’re using a similar size of capsule that I did, which was pretty close to the smallest, I would definitely say starting off slowly. Like you, we are large meat eaters but there is something about organ meat versus muscle meat that is very different in the body. I made sure when introducing that we had the supplement with food, since there are so many minerals and vitamins in liver. After that our focus was once a day for several days in a row and changed and updated to two pills a day, one in the morning, and then in the evening, and as we saw more tolerances we increased pill amount at time of intake. We have done no more than three at a time, and when it comes to our son, I am actually opening the pills and sprinkling it in food because he’s too young to take a pill orally. Hope this helps! And I would love to hear about your experiences if you are doing this as well!

    Would this work for an out door office or would you get cold after not moving for several hours at a time ?

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! I think it’s dependent on a few factors… 1. What is your ability of handling cold temperatures? And your climate? If you get a lot of sun even though it’s very cold and snowy it gets nice and warm in there! You could on a cloudy day run a small heater with an extension cord as well. 2. Weather conditions: if it got windy there were challenges (gusty winds) rain stayed out and it has vents if it gets too warm 🤩 I could have spent hours out there for sure but setting it up with options is necessary. Since we had it on grass it would get a bit squishy, if you were on a deck with a tarp or pavement you wouldn’t have that issue. You could get fancy out there definitely recommend a table (pop up) for easy breakdown/setup and a spot to put a blanket or jacket in the case you need to add or remove layers 👍🏼 Any other questions let me know! We love ours!

    Intresting :) how long can you store freeze dried liver in capsuls?

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So sorry about my delay in response! They have held up amazingly so far. I usually make a two months supply at once (pulling everything out and precise work make it work it) but you could make more than that at a time. I think important details to consider would be how you are storing it once the liver is capsuled. We keep extra that we are not currently using in a linen closet (cooler) and complete darkness in a brown glass bottle and using one of those moisture packets. As long as there has not been moisture we continue to reuse the packets each time! To answer your question specifically, I think you could make enough for 6 months (packaged and kept stored as stated above) easily. Past that might result in less effective nutrition from the liver. Thank you for asking we love to hear the questions!

    We just tried ours for the first time starting yesterday. A failure. We did some Costco skinny chicken breasts. After going thru the process, we were delighted how ‘light’ the breasts had become, so we put them in food saver bags with the absorbers. After a while we noticed pink areas appearing in small areas of the breasts, and they had become soft. Obviously we should had dried them longer. I haven’t heard many people talk about using a moisture meter to make sure foods are completely dry, but we have ordered one.

So far, (almost a year later), the flavor is still good. As far as prep, all I did was roughly slice the onions, and smash the garlic. Once dry, I blended to powdered form and stored. I forgot to mention that I also did this to celery. Also only roughly sliced before drying, then powdered. Tastes great in soup.

      That seems to happen from time to time and I have not found out what the common factor is, if it’s something to do with the temperature outside the freeze dryer vs the amount of moisture pulled out, like you we are always learning too!

    Also, I have found on casseroles and such (soup, stew, sloppy joe, spaghetti, etc.) if you measure out a quart per tray; reconstitution may be easier to regulate. I dump my bag into the quart container and add water and push dry into wet until the consistency is accomplished. I find it is better to have to add more water, than to be too wet. 👍🏻

      From what I can tell, when the cycle has completed dependent on when you pull it out the freeze dryer cycles back and forth between warm/hot to cold freezing - we have opened it up at both times, but I’m not sure how long they are at those designated temperatures once the machine is “done” - I much prefer when the trays are nice and warm 🤣

    It is great to see yours worked. I have seen several videos where it didn't work for people. It seems that some people have figured out that the freeze dryer needs to be turned down to 90-95 in order to make sure to not kill off the sourdough....if you ever do try the lower temps please let us know if it works even better and faster. Thanks for the video 🙂

      Oh wow, I guess I will have to check the temperatures (they should be at factory settings as we haven't adjusted anything) but I will say that making it as thin as possible on your tray is definitely key and if you want to sample how it works just throw a small section on a tray with your other food, you won't be disappointed! @@betterthanideserve3 I am glad, I know when my daughter started her small youtube channel, it was so nice when people commented and asked things. Interaction with people can be lots of fun 😊 Surprisingly there isn't a ton of stuff out there for freeze drying. Yours was very unique as I had never even thought of sourdough starter, so that was very interesting. My mom loves her sourdough and kefir, so was very happy to get a video on it. My parents have the pill maker but it didn't cross my mind to do that either. We are trying to prep for the craziness going on in the world and the cost of things....so some things are very important to keep our health good. I took a break from freeze drying videos for a bit as it has been none stop for weeks. But gotta get back to it as hopefully our freeze dryer will be in soon. Have you ever tried doing tumeric? My immune system was so low and I was catching everything for a while. I started making a tumeric/ginger/lemon drink and I have not got sick in a year now....even though my daughter has been sick 3 times. This drink is amazing. I would like to freeze dry it. I do a concentrate, it is very thick and then I just add 1Tbsp to water. I am hoping it will work freeze drying, not sure if you tried something like that. I plan on using the small ice cube molds that HR has. 1 oz should be enough for one drink. If I could have this drink when times get tough and I can't afford it anymore, that would be awesome. I haven't thought of anything I could ask you to experiment with, but I am excited to see all you have and will put out. You will have me as a regular watchers, thanks for the great videos. 💜

      @Better Than I Deserve oh okay, I do have a question for you. Have you tried freeze drying powders? When our freeze dryer comes in, we have a bunch of bulk ground seasonings, powdered gravy, even flour or pancake mix we would like to freeze dry. I have asked freeze drying groups if it could be done and if I had to add some water to everything. They said no water, but add parchment on top or paper towels so the powder doesn't fly everywhere. I am worried maybe the powder would get into the oil when the vacuum turns on. So wondering if you have any experience. Thank you

      @@shellic5166 Well we appreciate it and love that we had some unique items and processes to share that caught your eye at first! I get doing things in bulk to you have them for the "rainy days" ahead. We have not done tumeric before but I would think if you were doing and handling fresh tumeric it would be like what we did for ginger! Then you could incorporate it with your other items into your cubes. You might get bubbling with the lemon juice dependent on how much you use, but I have made the cubes with our adventures on creating a healthier pumpkin spice latte cube with real pumpkin and spices. As I continue to see the more dense an item it is in a cube form the longer it takes and sometimes doesn't work but I always encourage trying because ya never know what will work sometimes! @@shellic5166 Ooooooo! This is an interesting one and I have not tried freeze drying powders. I do find it interesting that they said to not add water if they have not tried it before. My gut would say to put what you would want on a tray and then spritz the top so it holds its form, but not get it soaking. I am not sure how much air movement happens in that space and completely understand those concerns about it getting into places it shouldn't. I guess putting the parchment on top wouldn't hurt as we use parchment often, but I don't see how that would keep the powdered items from air contact. Maybe a test could be done with a paper towel and watch how much it moves with your other items in the freeze dryer. Those are so light if you saw it move around I would probably be a bit concerned about trying something in straight powder form at first. There is always another item to try always and now my mind is starting with ideas! Again report back if you have attempted when your freeze dryer comes!

    Nice job. A couple of pointers: The door is a floating hinge so that it can move as the vacuum compresses the seal. I wouldn't try and tighten it. The adjustments are pretty exact even though they appear loose. Also try and keep the filter on the top of the vacuum pump upright at all times. I use an old container to set mine in while changing oil.

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh my gosh, thank you for the tips we really appreciate it! That is what we both thought on the door and Brad was unable to tighten it so we did kind of assume that it needed all that ability to move because of the suction and rubber seal. Thank goodness we have only done this one time - hoping that there has been no damage to the filter with what we have done. That is a great idea to place it on top of a container (we have plenty of those!) If you have any suggestions on filtering the oil please let us know- it still is not done filtering through the container that is provided and we are well beyond a week now, I never would think this is normal, so obviously there is something we have missed or done incorrectly. I appreciate you watching and giving us new information, great community!

    Forgive my ignorance. But how do you rehydrate the marshmallows? I love the lemon idea. I've thrown out a lot of lemons because they've ended up being in the drawer too long and I seem to have forgotten about them but to have a container of freeze-dried once to pop in my tea sounds excellent. Keep up the good work. I'm always learning something new.

    • @betterthanideserve3
      @betterthanideserve3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No ignorance here, we are always here to explain, show and teach! The marshmallows (in this situation) are not going to be like other food where you add water and it comes back to life, unfortunately. They are delicious in this VERY CRUNCHY state but are quite good in freshly made Hot Cocoa. They have a bit of bite to them still but last the entire enjoyment of your beverage. In the future when we do them again, I will be cutting them to 1/4 of their size for smaller more manageable sized marshmallows. They will store better and will melt even better into beverages! The lemons are seriously incredible, popping one out into your cup and then pouring some hot boiling water over it, just comes back to life before your eyes and the smells are fantastic. Also for a recipe you can crush a slice up and add it peel and meat right to your recipe and it is amazing! Lots of delicious lemon flavoring without all the fake flavor. I hope you enjoy all the upcoming videos we have ready to roll out and you get a good chuckle! Thanks for watching :)

    I always seem to find blueberries lacking and underwhelming in the freeze dryer. Is it just me? Maybe it's the raw product? I've just potted several bushes to grow in my hoop house (they don't survive in my soil or intense summers in my north Texas garden) as a last resort to growing my own. Maybe those will be better? Homemade marshmallows is without a doubt one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in the kitchen! Everyone is always so amazed that they have actual flavors other than just "sugar sweet". I've been experimenting slowly with flavored marshmallows and the results have been mixed but mostly positive. I've already learned to make them TINY if they are meant to be freeze-dried. Been there, done that, cleaned it up. I don't comment often, but I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your content. You are a doll! Here is hoping that your new growth bushes provide a better product :) It was amazing to see them come together, as I was mixing them up I was amazed to see how it changed form before my eyes, I would love to do some seasonal marshmallows like peppermint for winter, spiced for fall and maybe like a lemon for spring or something that is in the citrus area. Tiny will for sure be perfect going forward haha because they are huge Thank you so much, we love hearing from everyone and are so happy to share what we are learning and hear everyone else's experiences, thank you for being here and a Happy New Year to you too!
