Really like what they have done with the nomad, I'm one of the very first people to use the MSM when it came out, loved it, sadly the pandemic arrived and i packed in chasing milky ways for capturing deepsky from my garden. Looking to hopefully get back into chasing milky ways come September. Might have to give this serious consideration for picking it up. Love how they've now integrated the laser into the body of the tracker. How do you find the battery like with the nomad in the Scottish weather?
Excellent pictures, will definitely take my camera in February 2025
Glad you caught that display. Some great shots there and in a stunning landscape too. Clear skies for the next display! 😀
It’s brilliant what you do! I finally saw them 3 months ago over my tower block in Stockport. Took 50years! But chuffed to have seen them just once. Love watching what you do. It’s a different world. Happy new year Paul 🙏
Tremendous ~ what a start to the new year 🙌🏼☺️
Well done! I drove 12 hours New Years Eve to South Dakota and had similar windy conditions. My normal location was clouded out like the rest of the country, but I made do with the Badlands instead. Must wish I cold have gotten under like you were.
Very lucky to have these skies on my doorstep!
Great show and well-captured, Andrew. Let’s hope 2025 continues the way it began!
Lets hope the weather works well with the aurora too
Very nice. It was here too but too cold...❄️👍🙂
@@stigfloberghagenphotography was a cold night for sure with the both winds!
You are killing it lately Andrew! What a show 👌
@@StarScaperPhoto just glad to have a few clear skies 😂
Clear sky here in Glasgow right now a big satellite just above the moon.
That satelite is Venus.
@frankinblackpool Thanks. Looks very large next to the moon.
@jamiecampbell4437 yeah Venus was beautiful last night!
Amazing work as always. Scotland,s just one amazing country.
@jamiecampbell4437 so lucky to have this on my doorstep!
I was working New Year's Day night, and I got a brief chance to try and see the Arora from Fleetwood beach. It was around 20-00 hours and there was the faintest of faintest red in the sky. My phone caputured a tiny bit of red and green. One day the Arora will kick-off when I'm not working. 😭😭 Happy new year.
@@frankinblackpool always seems to be unsociable times it kicks off
How do you keep the foreground in focus? If the camera is moving even only very slightly over 90 seconds surely the foreground would just look messed up? Or do you take 2 shots, one for foreground and one for stars then stitch them in LR / PS? Thinking about getting one of these as I’ve always wanted to try some astro shots
Those skies! Hello from Bortle 8 suburban Texas.
so jealous of how clear the skies are where you are, im in ayrshire and its been clouds galore! doing my head right in!
@@cobro2626 definitely been about a week of cloud here now
@ depression setting in, just got an 8” Newtonian. I want images 😪
Nice images, Andrew. I use Manfrotto MT055 carbon fibre tripods, but honestly wouldn’t recommend them - a bit too fiddly for Astro and the quality isn’t quite what I’d hoped, especially for a premium brand. I recently started using the Neewer all-metal 54mm ball heads. They’re built like a brick **** house and a fraction of the cost of main brand variants, although they are really heavy. I find that astro is really tough on gear - the dew, ice and cold, together with cold clumsy hands, means my gear gets a pasting every time I take it out!
@@nightscapejournals great to know! I agree how astrophotography is very tough on tripods, definitely puts them through a lot of conditions, I’ll look into Neewer tripods!
Nice video and images!. So many tripods and camera mounts to think about in this game!! Many people say carbon fibre because it is strong and light and yet that makes it a problem when it is breezy and you're on soft ground!! My main tripod is an old Manfrotto aluminium design with twist lock wing nut type levers and it is a bit heavy but stands up to 8' feet high and is very solid!! Perfect for camera loading and targeting DSO's at eye level (I'm 6' foot) without having to bend your back or getting your knees sore!! I also use a pan and tilt ball head but for tracked Milky Way panoramas an Alyn Wallace Z-wedge in conjunction with MSM Nomad tracker +/- ball head is my preference.
@@gr-astro great knowledge there! I agree with the carbon fiber is just a bit too light and wobbly, definitely think heavy ball heads need to be huge to withstand large lenses which astrophotography sometimes creates
Lovely shots there. Hope you had a good Christmas and wishing you clear skies for 2025!
@@sjbastro you too! Thanks for enjoying the content!

@@colinlamond sure is! Love the name of it!
Nice one mate, hope you had a lovely Christmas (I’ve been floored since the 16th, fingers crossed all clear in the new year). Got the same setup myself plus a few other sticks kicking around
@@amacmedia3221 nice! Hope Santa was good to you too, weather not been great past few weeks but kinda glad to enjoy the festive period
@ got a new intervelometer for some moon time lapse, I had to explain what it was lol, so hopefully some moon time lapse in the future
Beautiful images! It sucks that you have to wait until the coldest months of the year to get good dark skies, but your images are amazing. My general use tripods are both carbon fiber, and each has a weight capacity to 25kg. I also have a heavy-duty video tripod that I use strictly for tracking. I'll use different heads depending on what I'm shooting and if I'm having to hike any kind of distance to get to my shooting location. Like you, I have a gimbal that I would prefer to use for everything except tracking, but it's so cumbersome that I won't always lug it around with me, so I also have heavy-duty ball heads (which also have 25lg capacity), and tilt and pan heads, and a compact fluid panning head. And I have a homemade indexed panning gimbal with soft clicking detents for both horizontal and vertical panning. Because I might change my heads so much, I've invested in a quick change system by Leofoto. I spent probably about $300-400 to outfit my tripods and my tripod heads. It has a receiver base and a nesting plate that locks into the base. You put the base onto your tripod, and attach the plates to your heads, then you can easily swap out heads. They lock down tight. There's no movement of any kind. There are different sizes, so you have to commit to one size to truly take advantage of the convenience it offers. I chose the 60mm (model QS-60), which is the perfect size for almost all tripod heads. Having it all one size makes your whole setup very modular, because you can change heads or change tripods in less than 10 seconds. It is an investment, but very much worth it in terms of convenience and reducing wear on your gear. You don't have to waste time and effort screwing and unscrewing the heads to and from the tripods. Just a twist to lock or unlock and you're done.
Sounds like you have a tank of a setup 😂 will look into that! Be amazing for heavy gear for doing deep sky probably
my newest tripod is sunwayfoto tm2840ck. also i've the leofoto Ls365c...very solid tripod and great price/ratio.
@@illsdom6055 ah that’s great! Not heard of them but will look at them now!
I use an old full metal manfrotto , it has a pan tilt head which is fixed I could si with another to carry my star adventuree We need some clear skies over in Ayrshire
A pan tilt definitely hand for astrophotography! Star adventurer sure has some weight to it!
Nice work. Newest tripod for me is a SIRUI AM-324 definitely sturdy, wish it were a bit taller.
@@LawrenceConnolly oooh nice! I’ll have a look, I like the low down tripods but agree that it’s handy to have a tall option as sometimes have to photograph over a wall or bush
@ my problem is I’m too tall 😂 cheers, happy holidays
I have two Big Boy tripods. One is a Manftotto that is well over 25 years old and bombproof. My other is a Benro Tortoise and both tripods have self levelling bases. Levelling Heads are worth their weight in gold for getting a level platform for my cameras either for video or astro. The Benro will go flush to the ground. However the best thing that I have invested in this year for my tripods is a Vanguard SB-100 Universal Stone Bag for tripods. You can fill it with rocks to ensure that your tripod never moves. Or you can buy some sandbags, if weight is not a problem working out of the back of a van. I bought a couple of bright orange bags so that I could spot them easily in the dark. As for your tiny tripods, I bought one off Amazon but sent it back immediately because I refused to pay £50 for something so small. I went for a SMALLRIG 72" Aluminum Camera Tripod, Lightweight Tripod & Monopod with Ball Head and Quick Release Plate for £59. Match the Smallrig up with a Stone Bag and you have a Travel Tripod as steady as your "Big Boy" Manfrotto.
@@frankinblackpool love a tripod that’s close to the ground! Just feels so secure and more safe if something happens with the camera falling 😂 nice to hear about stone bags, not heard a lot of people talking about them
@@scotlandsnightsky With a Stone Bag, your top heavy tripod is no longer a top heavy tripod. The stone bag lowers the centre of gravity and strengthens the actual structure by pulling the legs into a more stable position. Most tripods come with a small hook to attach weights but they can sway in the wind and cause micro jitters. Micro jitters be gone, with a Stone bag. My two orange sand bags are 2kg each and that gives me a lot of stability for what ever is resting on top of the tripod.
I love the astrovlogs so much!!!!
Thank you!!
What camera are you using for recording? How are the stars so visable?
Andrew, when you were showing the rear of the LCD with the settings I noticed MM plus 1.3. Not familiar with Sony settings. Was that EV compensation of plus 1.3 that you use? Cheers mate, Richard
Really nice work there Andrew. Especially in that chilly environment. All the very best for the Christmas season mate.
Thank you Richard! Have a great festive time too!
“Still a bit creepy here.” 😅
will never not be creepy :)
5:32 what was that ? A shooting star?
sure was, i saw it when editing
Love the frosty stuff on the ground which complements the stars in the sky! Orion is great this time of year and I hope to catch more of it too in North Wales (but not the cold)!! Super video.
thank you for enjoying the video and yes i love the frost, just makes astro more of an experience
Liking your content! Keep up the work and wait for them subscribers to come. 👍
Hi Andrew.love this. It's proper Orion season now isn't it and I'm hoping for some clear skies here in South Wales. You've picked a couple of cracking locations there. Fabulous images. Many thanks for sharing.

Woah, 3 nights in about a week. Good times! Great inspiring video again dude.
I know, its a new feeling to be on youtube again, and I like it :)
Great video mate! Looks a wee bit cold there! This time of the year it’s the opposite for us in Australia! Great work beautiful pics!
I bet you'll have high humidity to deal with, that will be hard
What is the reason for keeping the starglow filter moving whilst taking the shot?? Why not keep it still??
Since the lens is very wide at 14mm and the filter is a small square, if i kept it still you can see the corners of the filter in the image, moving it blurs it out completely :)
Another great night, Andrew. Jupiter looks insane with that Starglow filter! Love those cold crispy nights under the stars.
@@nightscapejournals I wish we had many more cold nights here in Ayrshire
Jupiter for sure looks nuclear with the filter :)
I wasn't working during the peak of the Meteor Shower but sadly I came down with Flu. Not fun. Thankfully the sky was covered in cloud. Out of curiosity, what editing software do you use? I only ask as I use Resolve and it has amazing "noise reduction" which may or may not help with your low light footage.
I'll for sure look into this as its something i want to improve on, just now I use wondershare for my video editing :)
@@scotlandsnightsky Just sent you a mail. 😀
Great video Andy. Seems ages since your last mate. Have you tried 'Hothands' sachets? Theyre brilliant for keeping your hands warm. You can also use them as a lens warmer in cold conditions. Did you ever decide on a name for the van? Richard 👍
Uploaded a vlog last week as well, and yes I use them all the time, just ran out of heat for the last hour really, and yeah I’ve used them for lens warmers too 😅
Fantastic shots and very enjoyable vid - thank you for the commitment

What software do you use for stitching together your panorama images Andrew?
PTGui is the software 😊
Another super video Andrew. Is this the little loch near Gatehouse by the roadside? Can't think of another. Always look forward to seeing your work.
Cheers Brian, and not sure as there are no buildings near it, literally loch right beside Aberfeldy to the south 😊
How you getting on with your Move Shoot Move? I've only had one or two plays with mine. I may even relent and buy a full frame camera.
Not used it recently and only really use it for Milky Way season 😅
