Ruger American Ranch (Gen I) 7.62x39! Accuracy and Groups w/ Steel Case Ammo Should I get a Gen II ?
I show you the features of the Ruger American Ranch Gen I rifle in 7.62x39 including the trigger pull, length, length of barrel, length of pull and the scope and rings that I mounted. I take you out to the range to show you some shooting and then I show you the sight-in target and first group with the Barnaul Steel Case Ammo, which is sub MOA! Then I talk a little about the Ruger American Gen II rifles and if I should get one and in what caliber.

Lots of reviews on the whitetail, ALL BAD ! Try other brands in the 140, 150 gr. Remember if your spread is that bad at 100 yrds, it's just going to get worse the farther you shoot !
I have a Gen.1 in x39 and works n shoots great love it so I just bought a Gen.2 in 5.56 so I don't burn up ammo my money is tight the past 4 years .. MB ..
Beautiful rifles
What scope mounts please
The first round being low could be (almost certainly is) a bedding issue. As the barrel warms up the bullets change impact point until it reaches some sort of equilibrium. Usually they start off low, but it does depend on what is going on between the stock and the barrel. I'm yet to find a good example of the '93 shooting less than two inches at a hundred yards. I find the lack of good examples pretty unusual considering it's one of the more affordable options. It might be fixed by glass bedding the stock, but I'm not sure I'm confident enough to do that operation, and if I was going to pay someone to do it I might as well buy the CZ 457.
What unit is this im going to try and hunt the coastal this year
I own 3 Enfield’s. A No.1, No.4 and a No.4 Sporter. All of them have different Bore diameter's. The No.1 is .312, the No.4 is .310, and the Sporter is .309. The No.1 is a 1918 and it’ll hold about 4 MOA with the right bullets, but the old girl looks like she served in Ww1, WW2, Korea, and a bunch of Field training. If only she could talk. The No.4 is a 1955 re-arsenaled. I scoped it and it’ll shoot not quite as good as yours even with carefully worked up handloads. My sporter actually likes a 310 diameter 123 grain bullet or a 150 grain Boat tail .311 bullet. Pretty sure it was built when Britain was being bombed to hell by the Germans, because it still has machine marks on the barrel and it’s a two groove barrel. Looks like you’ve got a Good shooter, leave it alone. My point is be happy it shoots that good with factory Ammo. Most factory new Enfields shoot around 2 MOA at best. A carefully stocked Sniper variant might shoot better, but good luck finding one of those. I’ve taken one Buck with my No.4 a 180 grain 303 round nose soft point dropped him in his tracks at 200 YDS. One thing is Enfields tend to wander when there barrels heat up, so if you do decide to hunt with it. Make sure your zero is confirmed with a cold bore as if you were hunting. My most accurate No.4 Enfield starts shooting low after about 10 shots.
That’s a beautiful rifle! Have you taken it hunting?
I did tale it elk hunting but didn't get a chance to shoot it.
The scope is too high, clean the barrel after 5 shots , then let it cool down and sight in 3" high at 100 yards for an approximate 200 yard zero, depending on bullet weight. It is best to make your own loads for "consistent accuracy" By loading your own cartridges, you can tailor the loads to suit this rifle.
Nice looking rifle, but I'd take that rail and heavy rings off. Use the factory rings, for a cleaner look, and more solid set up. Less parts.
As I've mentioned before, open the bolt to quicken cooling time. Even better, stand the rifle up on a rack or just by the shooting bench to get a draft moving up through the barrel, which is even faster on cooling. She looks like
Very informative, thanks so much for the review
Nice.
I think you need to adjust a windage little bit. Seems that no mater what you do it’s shooting to the left
Those sporterized 303 are surprisingly comfortable to carry in the field. Reasonably light
I'll but my mk4 just like his identical right hand bolt no scope iron sights show him that rifle was never designed for scope
That 303 your showing has left hand bolt all the 303 was right hand bolt that mount want work because of the eject of shells I had one just as u see invideo my first deer rifle I bought at 16 years old I'm now 66 accurate at iron sight flip 100 meter flip 300 do the math meter versus feet the rifle wasn't designed for scope
Some say to get copper bullets to shoot accurately one must clean the copper fouling from the lead core bullets first. Do you know anything about this?
I think there's some truth to it. I just haven't been able to fully prove the theory out for myself.
Hey how would you compare the recoil of a 308-7mm-08-6.5 creed thanks!🤙🏻
In my experience, the recoil between the three is similar. I have experienced the most felt recoil from the 7mm-08, honestly, but not sure if that was due to the recoil pad, the rifle, the load, or the shooting technique.
@@MisterBrewer Yeah looking for a lighter shooting hunting rifle to pair with my tikka hunter 270. At first was looking into the 6.5 creed but IMO the best deer specific cartridge has to be 1.270 2.7mm-08 and those pretty much can be close to interchangeable, ofc the 270 has some hundred pounds of energy and extra horse power.
The 7mm-08 is a great deer cartridge and can handle other things too.
@@MisterBrewer Absolutely agree with all of that, definitely wouldn’t be afraid to take Elk Black bear and even big Maine moose with the right bullets
I've got the Savage 16 all-weather bear hunter in 338 Federal and it is awesome
Have the same rifle
I have the Savage 93 GV bull barrel. Had to send it back to the factory due to not chambering rounds. They polished the chamber and sent a new 10 round mag and a new 5 round mag. Hopefully it the bolt will chamber a round now. It took 9 weeks to get it back. Savage has or had problems with the magazines. We will see. It looked like your rifle was cycling rounds smoothly. Have you had problems with it????
I have to cycle it just right. It has issues sometimes.
I received my rifle back and it chambers smooth as silk.
Thats great to hear! Congrats!
Beautiful rifle. Hope you can get a video of you hunting with it this year.
I can tell you it is not a long-range cartridge so long-range 110 even with the 26-inch barrel, which may help a little and a 308 with a 24inch barrel 165 grn bullet just over 2800fps is OK but the bigger diameter is going to brake fast and range will be minimal this is the very reason I went with the 325WSM but for a awesome 300yrd rifle 338 federal will do it, but other calibers are more efficient but the copper suffers big time with the 338 fed velocity, keep it under 300yrds it will be fine, it doesn't matter what others think of it if you like it, go hunting. Good luck. 👍
Idk if you have a aftermarket barrel, however, if not, the .303 British rifles cast a wide net as far as bore diameter if it is a military barrel. I would suggest that you slug your barrel and take your measurements of groove diameter from the lead slug. all in all as a hunting rifle it's fine for shooting game just as it is, however, for better accuracy you have know what bullet diameter fits that barrel. Idk if you handload, however, handloading is the other side of accuracy when it comes to firearms. you can tailor make you ammunition to do what you need it to do, it is a viable resource used. anyway, I enjoyed the content, good luck and good shooting. peace Brother. - Dave
I thought about it and I also wanted to say, although most of the shooting community looks at the series of British military rifles as Ugly ducklings, once you know what you are looking at, the rifles they produced were very well thought out and well made. just the receivers have dozens of machine cuts that is craftmanship that you would pay a lot of money for these days. the ergonomics of the stocks with it's canted buttstock and pistol grip fits the shooter, not the other way around, the sights are excellent and precise, hashed not to reflect glare. Many match rifles have been built off of the Enfield's, I would say more testing, evaluation, research and development for both the evolution of the rifle and .303 cartage has been done, more than any other cartage/rifle in history. It is one of the Great firearm and cartage's experimented with. And as far as a game stopper, the .303 cartage, it has been used for more hunting applications and has dropped more animals than any other round world wide. thousands upon thousands of Enfield rifles were sold as surplus just in Canada and the United States and successful hunting (One shot stops) on all North American game is a trophy it has won. As you can tell, I'm a big Fan of the .303. Peace - Dave
excellent video on the glock 17 gen5 glock updated it a little some people like the older models you can't go wrong with any glock guns 🇦🇹💯👍
Rare to see left hand model ; (now I see that the film clip must have been back the front) I grew up with them in Oz. Great military rifle for their time, but as a sporter they have a few problems.
Please do a full video of this rifle.
Won't watch until you take the commie muzzle off your face!
It's sad savage quit making rifles in .338 federal. Availability is almost non-existent now.
I want the rifle version of that.
Ive never seen a revolver with seven rounds that looks like a nice Pistol
These Rugers are light rugged accurate rifles. How is the Picatinny rail mounted? Is the action drilled and tapped on the top of the receiver bridge? I ask because as far as I’m aware Rugers don’t have screw holes on top of their actions. They are designed to use with Ruger proprietary ring mounts. Cheers 🍻 🍻
Great question! I can tell you that there are four screws on top of the pic rail attaching it to the top of the action, so it was drilled and tapped for that at the factory. And it also has some type of round wedge type things for the round recesses where the ruger rings normally go.
@@MisterBrewer Wow that’s great to hear. Thanks for your reply to my question. Cheers 🍻 🍻
Cheers!
I have same rifle with the cci varmint I get 5 shot groups touching at 100 yards something’s loose or another issue there
Excellent cartridge!
Hey, it is what it is. I have two LEs, an issue 1943 Maltby No4 Mk1 and a sporterized 1944 Long Branch No4 Mk1*. They usually need to be bedded. Lots of TH-cam videos on the topic. Not difficult or pricey....essentially I used a small sliver of thin cardbord and boiled linseed oil. Accuracy went from 10" at 50 yds to 4" at 100 yds. from a bench. Not bad for 71 y.o. eyes. BTW, the Lee Loader is slow, but will do the job for you. Started with one back in 1972!
How’s the recoil for being a light rifle ? Does it need a brake ?
It's not bad at all. The recoil pad is pretty good. I kind of wanted to put a brake on it to keep sight picture better but haven't done it.
My favorite guns are definitely rimfire. When I shoot my hirer power rifles I always have the calculator in my head going ( ok I just shot $30, time to quit). As far as my favorite caliber, it depends on the day. Today I'd say 17hmr tomorrow it might be 22lr
Another note on Barnes bullets and maybe other monolithics. Ron Spomer found that you must throughly clean your barrel before shooting Barnes bullets, for some reason they don't like the gilding metal left behind by other bullets. He recommends cleaning the barrel and then only shooting Barnes bullets in it if they shoot well.
Yes, thank you. I need to do some more experimenting with a super clean bore. I did get some pretty good results from the barnes on a later test.
I have 2 ruger M77s and an American. The 77s are not free floated from the factory and they have a pretty hard trigger pull. You can put a lighter spring in the trigger and get it down to around 2 pounds and you can put shims under the angled recoil lug to get clearance on the barrel to see if it makes a difference. I cut shims out of a pop can on mine and it worked so well I left them in. I think I put 2 layers in each and they are still there 10 years later. It brought my M 77s down to or just under MOA. I also added Limbsaver donuts to all my rifles about 3 years ago and I regularly get 3/4 MOA or better out of all modern rifles. My M 77s are in .243 and .308. The American is 7mm08. I hope this helps, the only other thing you can do is reload. Then you can tune a load specifically to your rifle.
Thanks! I'll keep those suggestions in my back pocket. I did find some other factory ammo that did just under 3/4 inch 3 shot groups on a different day.
A Hawkeye can be made as smooth as a Tikka with a little polishing of the action. Wrap a popsickle stick with 400 grt sand paper. Remove the bolt and go to work. Finish off with fine grit. I used 2000 grit and some and some Mothers mag polish. Do the bolt with the mag. polish also. Polish the mag. follower also. No need to over do it just remove the burrs and casting inperfections. Will be as smooth as a Tikka only with controled feed and Made in the U.S.A. Ruger M77s are accurate and will go bang when it is cold outside.
Mine wouldn’t feed, had a bearcat that transfer bar broke so I’m 0 for 2 with ruger
awesome video, love this rifle in 308, almost got one, may have to one day, I did get a sako 90 peak also 20" and love it, I group tested a bunch of ammo with mine, 8 different kinds, it hated the 150/165 fusion but LOVED the 180 fusion (.6" ctc for 3) and it also loved the hornady white box 168 eld-m match for .6" ctc 3 shot also, it did not like the 178 eld-x, none of the cx copper options, it was okay with federal blue box 150, and I think I'm forgetting....point is, try the 180 fusion if you want it to like fusion, I was hoping mine would like the eld-m and at least one of the fusions and it got what I wanted, my sako was 5 lb 10 oz out of the box though, it's light, went 1-6 trijicon accupoint which is heavy and arc m-10 low rings...also heavy and still ended up 7 lb 3.5 oz all up for my light general purpose 308
Where do y’all find the ammo? I haven’t been able to find it for years.
Federal website has it available now. I ordered a case, so I'll have it for a while. It's also usually available on Gunbroker but extra pricey.
Why do you have your camera in mirror image at the start? Everything is reversed as you are showing off the backwards scope mount, bolt and safety backwards.... At least when you got to the shooting area the image returned to normal. I'd try to zero at 100 yards. You have simple options to either "shim" the scope rail or "Mill" scope rail and scope base true flat or even mill the rail slightly to give an angle. See a machinist or good gunsmith.
The mirror image was an accident. Sorry about that. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Where abouts were you hunting at. What unit ? I hunt elk by myself as well most of the time .

Beautiful .303, wow! Nice work bud!
Thank you!
There's a guy on youtube who shows a magazine modification to the plastic follower in the magazine to smooth out chambering of rounds.
Fusion is excellent ammo. Usually extremely accurate. Works well on game also.
how was the removal of the rear pin retaining wire, its stuck on mine and no matter how i hammer it its not budging.... no gun smiths in the area so im gonna have to file, Dremel or drill it out
I tried to remove it as well and couldn't. I had to have my gunsmith do it. Best of luck! Thanks for watching and commenting!
These retaining wires can be hard to remove, so use as much muscle as you need to get it out. You won't be reusing it anyway. I removed mine with a combination of hammer, steel punch and molegrips. The gun itself needs to be held securely during this removal process.
The wire has started to rivet and now looking like a nail head, didn't want to damage it any further. It's now wedge shaped and the punch slides off and scratches off the black coat, local gun shop has another store next town over to smith it out.
If you move your hands up a bit closer to the hammer the gun will not kick up as much when firing .357 rounds, this should also keep your thumbs from getting near the cylinder release.😉
