Urban Traditionalists - Contemporary Homesteading
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 2 ส.ค. 2021
Our desire is to become more self sufficient in an urban environment through traditional means. We are new to the 'homestead' approach, but have been practicing its methods for years; including hunting, fishing, gardening, and food preservation in the forms of canning, pressure canning and dehydrating. The goals of our channel is to teach the knowledge we've gained, while at the same time expanding our knowledge of homesteading. Learn from our mistakes, duplicate our successes.

Big Announcement!! We are moving!
God is relocating us. We felt a move was coming for a while, but the location has caught us by surprise and left us in disbelief over God's goodness. This change happened fast and will move fast as we look to fully relocate by the end of October.
The vision is the same, the co-labour with God's creation and mentor people to do the same. God's presence is found in the present. We hope to do even more videos as we expand our ten pegs to larger territory both physically and spiritually!

Prepping and God's Economy
มุมมอง 74ปีที่แล้ว
Our thoughts on what prepping is, that it's a lifestyle that moves with the ebb and flow of God's economy, whether that be highs of the harvest, or lows of the winter. To be prepped is to BE the skill set that can adapt to environments and learn to survive and thrive.
Spring Update - Meat Birds, Gardening and Egg Incubation
มุมมอง 244ปีที่แล้ว
The spring is when things get busy. We have 50 meat birds, 7 turkeys, 12 new heritage chicks to add to our laying flock, and we are incubating eggs on the side. We are changing our garden set up and building a new enclosure for the meat birds to grown into!
I Failed at Homesteading
มุมมอง 187ปีที่แล้ว
Failure is hard... And not something we like to talk about. The spring hasn't even started and I already feel like I'm failing the season. However, homesteading is about overcoming the hard, so talk it out, talk yourself up and start again.

Day in the Life - It's Cold, We are Seed Starting and Incubating Eggs!
มุมมอง 104ปีที่แล้ว
Hoping to launch more 'day in the life' videos to show you what happens around here on a more semi-weekly basis. Being late February not much is happening, but there is always something happening! We've started onion and herb seeds and we are learning how to incubate eggs! I will be recording the whole incubation process and launching an specific video on this once all the data is gathered. It's that time of year again! Seed starting.... and how did I not know what a dirt blocker was?!?!
Fermenting Citrus - Long Term Storage
มุมมอง 54ปีที่แล้ว
We struggled with a good way to long term store citrus. We tried dehydrating, but weren't a big fan of the turn out. Fermenting has changed the game for sure! I fermented this back in the summer and we are still using fresh citrus in baking and cooking 9 months later!
Squash Gnocchi
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Not sure what to make with all the squash your garden produced? Try making pasta with it!! Squash pasta is super easy and super tasty! It can also be frozen in vacuum sealed bags for longer storage. This is the recipe I used - It calls for butternut squash, but any harder variety of squash will work great, so long as you cook or drain the moisture out of the puree. beyondsweetandsavory.com/butt...

You said you "open the cans, dump them and mix in spices." After you dump the aquafaba, do you rinse the peas with water?
I cannot hear your voice. THE AUDIO IS BAD !
You are not supposed to open the incubator when the chicks are hatching. They will shrink wrap.
How about a written recipe? Thanks
Also the one that hatched has splayed feet…. That’s why it was struggling to stand and its legs didn’t look right.
Yeah def weren’t supposed to take the lid off on lockdown days 18-21. That’s when the egg inside can shrink wrap around them and end up killing them.
Sounds like she's new to hatching eggs, at this point. So many are quick to be a bit harsh in their responses. We all go through a learning process so being more of a helpful person responding would be much better use for us all. Try to be kind and helpful and not so judgie, judgy, judgey,?,lol Peace n light to all (especially newborns of all types)
Watch this video to learn what NOT to do when hatching chicks.
Chickens don't pee and that's way too many wood chips.
After day 18 don't open or remove the lid. I keep saying close that lid.
4/24/24 Thank you. Your veidos really helped me out ❤.
My problem is all the light that comes from your hand holding that light. Use the candler on top of the incubator for Christ sake
The light is for candling ya!.
How much water do I put
I have one to
You did all wrong! Why not read and looking video about it before? I have the same incubator and have goods results You need to put hygrometer and thermometer on the machine and keep the styrofoam on the buttom and the top to keep all stable. You have to keep your humidity around 35/40% personaly i dont have to add water on the 18 first day...depend of the humidity of your room. Please read about it Poor little thing!
I'm shocked they didn't shrink wrap and die you never open the top after lockdown until all eggs have hatched.
Some feeds have grit added.I never use grit.
They roost on the top of that kind of feeder and they poop right into the feed.
They should all hatch the same time.
Promo*SM 💕
not suppose to open lid until chicks are out it will shrink wrap the cord. what ive been told
14:47 140 degree means 60 C for 10 hours?
10:59 What does blanching do? Is it better to blanch or not blanch it?
Mine has a cotton wick that goes under the incubator and water is pulled into the tray
When examining eggs never shake nor quickly flip them.
Looks good. Good team work. The dog even wants to help! 😂
Probably should name this "Incubating eggs wrong start to finish" and first time isn't an excuse. A simple 5 minute read would told you all the basics.
Appreciate the feed back and your assumption that I didn't do any research. Keep motivating people towards their goals!!
Thanks for the awesome vid, loves it! I want to get the same model
And probably that one little guy that hatched didn't make it, humidity humidity!!! 😢 please do your research people, this is not a game 😢
Way to go you guys!!!!! Fido you have to drywall the kitchen first as part of the deal😃😃😃😃😃😃
I made crab apple jelly yesterday, and discovered some plain juice that spilled on the counter and jelled by itself, no sugar, so i thought, "I bet I can use this for homemade pectin!". Thanks for the video.
HI, thanks for making this video. Do you have any guidance for me on how to use this natural pectin alternative to shop bought pectins. I have a beautiful small red crab apple tree and want to use natural, as low sugar as possible jams & jellies, thanks.
I'm learning from the comments 😌
Incomplete video. Disappointing
when you showed the calendar can the quail eggs be followed up to that schedual?
Excalibur has fitted trays, now as 3 types of sheet adds
What do you do with your dried peaches?
Once they get to this point I cut the top of the main stem where its starting to flower. This makes it start to push flower buds up between each leaf. The little green florets make a fantastic broccoli substitute, and will continue to produce heavily for a few weeks. I keep the plants from grtting too tall by trimming the top off. Ow and then, which turns it into a pakchoi bush with loads of florets.
was excited to see this video. I have been wanting to dry chickpeas and didn't know how. Unfortunately, even though your ideas sounded good there were no measurements or specifics on how the rest of us can do this so I'm still looking for someone who can do a how-to video with better info. Very disappointed. Such potential here if there were only recipes.
This is such a rude comment. You could have just said "Hi, could you provide measurements for this?"
Im looking for light delicate crunch, is this it?
Did you add water only 3 times during the incubation period or did you add reinforcements from time to time?
Did you have any luck.. I believe it depends on the humidity in the room..
I just retired from working twenty years with special needs teens in my large local high schools. When I have a hard day I think back to a freshman girl named Elizabeth who had MS and was in a wheelchair. She could not speak and her face was frozen where she could not even smile. We ate lunch everyday with another wheelchair girl Kathy. Both girls could not even feed themselves and mean girls use to stare at them. It was horrible for them. BUT, I thought of a solution. I use to bring tons of cookies everyday and put chairs all around them. The kids use to fight to sit with us. It turned a bad situation into a fun lunchtime party everyday. My point is: You never know what test God is going to give you, do the best you can. Think of others who have it harder. Think of others before yourself and your troubles won’t seem too big. Count your blessing everyday.✝️💕
Hello there... I'm wondering where you are located in the world?
Hi we are in bc canada
@@MrRhettzki Thank you! It's nice to know these things. I'm in Ontario and I'm finding it hard to find Canadian content. Glad you're here, showing our great country off.
Quit wasting time and money on "Fluff" breed chickens. Meat birds ..... Cornish Cross/8 Weeks "Rangers"/12 weeks Bresse/16 Weeks The "Math" does not square otherwise. Go for purpose bred egg layers like Leghorns or ISA Browns. Egg production is front-loaded and they eat less feed. If you want multipurpose your options are RIRs, Austrolorps, and Barred Rocks, and Delawares if you can find them.
All our meat birds are Cornish cross. We prefer the heritage breed for our flock. We did a lot of research on the different types of chickens out there. We're not super concerned about excessive egg production. We would rather chickens at have better heritage and we like the different breeds specifically
@@urbantraditionalists-conte9756 Heritage breeds that can make sex-links are very useful restocking.
Excellent video and explanation. Those baby chickens are sure growing fast! We are already looking forward to your next video!
Sadly, those are china incubators and there are about 10 different names all for the same clone. I had one of the clones and had a hatch rate of exactly zero. They just can't hold in the heat. I sent it back and just spent the money on a Nurtureright 360 like I should have in the first place. My first hatch with mailed eggs in the 360 was 60%. I'm on track for a 91% hatch (11 of 12) since one quit before day 7. Also; lockdown means don't open the incubator. A pipped egg can shrinkwrap without warning and the chick could die.
Thanks for the feedback! The first time doing something is bound to have errors. It's always vulnerable to share the learning experience. I'm about to post a video to launch later this week which will show our current solution to insulating the incubator. Our second round of hatching produced four eggs - Eggs from our own flock, so I'm happy with that! I'm hoping for 5-6 hatches on our third batch.
Why in the world have you taken them out of lockdown? You just removed all humidity. Good Lord!
Is the LED light for cancelling?
The light on top I believe is for candling the egg to check for baby chicks growing
