I listened for the 1st time to *Nude* in 5-channel from the Camel box set last night. It's the most enjoyable time I've has listening to that album about the Japanese soldier who didn't know when WW2 ended because he was on a small island. I was impressed by the bass punch, which I don't often hear on my system which has no subwoofer (I set the AVR to "analog" and let my Cambridge bluray spinner do all the processing). Steven Tayler did a fine job with the sonics, which mostly expand the sound to fill the room, although there are occasional rear channel bits with percussion & horns.

I bought Tomita’s version of Daphnis et Chloe from Vocalion and Illuminations by Alice Coltrane and Carlos Santana.

I got Bermuda Triangle on Vinyl back in 1980-81 from a Audiophile Uncle, great stuff!

When the Bermuda triangle was released? It had a hidden fifth channel that you can extract from your computer, so I’m hoping it will be remixed and given an Atmos mix, seems like a missed opportunity. I will also add I now have eight Quad SACD Tomitas, and this is Now my favorite along with the planets.

Hey, Mike! I streamed this one for awhile & I thought "Relic" was particularly good, but this is definitely a *metal* album. It's all about texture & rhythm from the players, with what melody there is carried by the singers. The group clearly want to be in the metal genre with the power chords and drum style. They get major points for avoiding any "monster voice!" *Embers* just arrived this month from God is an Astronaut and that's a good example of progressive music with a focus on melody plus dynamics that can still rock pretty hard at times. I'm climbing down from my soapbox now 😊

Does anyone have a CD rip of the 2024 Stereo Mix?

Thanks yet again for a brilliant tip off🙏 I'd written off the Atmos Ziggy as a money grab and also because I already loved the SACD version but wow ! You're so right, what an upgrade ! After watching your post, I ordered it right away and Yes, it's a whole different level !! BIG thanks again for being out there and tipping us off for all these great discs (and for the ones to avoid aswell) 🙏

I appreciate this album is not LOCKED UP in a Box Set however, Rhino and SDE just announced pre-order for TALKING HEADS 77 BLU-RAY, ATMOS, 5.1 but have it LOCKED UP in a $100 Bx Set. I don't know if profit margins are greater with these sets or just not enough with the stand alone Blu-Ray. I would purchase the entire Talking Heads library should they offer them as Stand Alone Discs. I have been considering THE BRICK for the DVD - Audio but now I am hoping they still release a Stand Alone of each album. I guess I'll just wait it out. BTW, I did receive my copy of the ZIGGY Album, and it is INCREDIBLE!!! THANKS MIKE FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY and The Surround Community!!!

For those of us with a normal surround system, not atmos, will this sound good?

Well worth the upgrade from the SACD mix. The vocals are now mixed correctly in the front stage, none of this all channel in your head vocals. The bass line in starman comes forward in the mix and isn't muddy like on the SACD. Also the wide channels are used to expand the front soundstage, which I haven't noticed on many other Atmos mixes. This is really done well.

Excellent review. I’m with you on this new version. I voted 9 in the QQ poll. The Atmos (which I’m only hearing on my 5.1 setup) blows away the SACD, which I never liked the sound of - too thin and brittle. Don’t mind the digipack - I just use a corner of my tee shirt to get the disc out and put it back. A worthwhile trade off to get the standalone version.

Excellent review Mike. I'm OK with the cardboard sleeve--trying to reduce the consumption of plastic. Hope the next Bowie Atmos releases are as good.

I bought this one and I also have the SACD. I agree with this review. I also agree with the opinion of the awful cardboard box. David Gilmours Luck and strange has a lot better cardboard box. There's been a lot of Dolby Atmos music coming out recently. David Gilmour, Ultravox Lament. Queens First album has been remixed to Dolby Atmos but it will only be released on streaming. That is really annoying. The Alan Parsons project Pyramid in Dolby Atmos. A box set of Marillion This Strange Engine is coming out. No Atmos on that one, but a 5.1. All this puts a heavy burdon on my wallet. :)

Sorry to hear that the relative value of my SACD just dropped. However, I have to agree on sonic shortcomings of that. So, I guess I will just need to upgrade as this is definitely one of the best, if not the best, David Bowie albums out there. Thanks for the good work!

Terrific video. I have been a sound designer in feature films for decades. I have been a part of countless atmos mixes for cinema. I recently got into vinyl the past few years and oddly I have never listened to traditional albums in atmos. This might have to be my first as I am a huge Bowie fan and have most of his albums. I would be very curious to hear your thoughts should you indeed make that video in the future on what you consider terrific and well mixed atmos records. The Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio version is fantastic , by far the best version of the Ziggy album out there for immersion. Having said that the previously available 5.1 surround sound mix shouldn’t be discounted, it’s still a fantastic listening experience, just a different one. 2024 stereo mix is also great but to be honest I do prefer the original 1972 mix that I’ve grown up with since 1972. Maybe I’m just nostalgic? I find it strange you can’t tell the difference between the lower and higher rez versions of the original album? For me the hi rez version definitely has more clarity and I’m 64 now so my ears won’t be as good as they were when I was younger, but I can tell the difference. All in all if your a Bowie fan then this is an essential purchase in my opinion but like you I hate these cheap digi pack cardboard boxes for all the reasons you mentioned. Great review. 👍🏻

My standalone pre-order bluray from SDE arrived midweek. I played it the same night. Thumbs up to Atmos version. I'm a very happy chappy.

Hi: I've owned this since it's original release I'm thinking 2004, it came out a while before the Roxy Music/Avalon did. It's a bit stiff with it's age of recording but far superior to the original stereo. I'll pass this along, I own the ultra-rare DVD Audio/multichannel of Young Americans. Rumor has it Station To Station suffers for it's mix, is it good? I believe lots of folks suffer from what D/A conversion is applied to the multichannel signal, I did on many units of the past particularly Yamaha & Denon multi-unit players. Six channel analog inputs on the reciever have presented the bane of existance for 5.1, HDMI corrects much of the degradation of signal.Thanx

I was really disappointed by the Atmos mix. It's very dry and forward. The original stereo mix is quite dreamy. Vocals are distant, drowning in reverb. This new one toughens up the drums a lot, and puts the vocals way up in the mix. In my opinion it ruins the vibe. This was always a very spacy/spacious album. The new mix, despite being "Atmos", is way less atmospheric. The 5.1 was closer to the stereo, so if you are looking for a multichannel version of the album, that's the way to go. There was a "Best of Roxy Music" Atmos release in early 2023, it has 2 of the Avalon tracks (title track and More Than This). It's a totally different mix and closer in spirit to the original stereo. I was hoping there would be more like that, but alas no.

I have anticipated this release for years. as soon as it popped up on Apple music I signed up, grabbed the crack pipe and a smooth brown ale and settled down in my 7.4.6 Trinnov Altitude 32 home theater to experience bliss. I have to say, not impressed whatsoever. Next, I fired up Roon with the dsd of the 5.1 sacd and it was perfection once again. There is something lost with streaming atmos version, the perfect envelope is missing. Not sure what went wrong here. Thanks for the review.

I can like this video but so far, I don't like the album. I have the SACD but have not been able to check out the surround sound because my new cats ate the powered subwoofer cord to my front towers. Regardless, I have listented to the album once and don't particularly like the music. I've heard and read many people rave about this just as an album and also has a 5.1 channel SACD. I fear it is because I did not listen to the album when it was new and thus will not come to enjoy it because time and place often have a big effect on how much we like an album. I did enjoy this informative video though.

The surround sound layer on the SACD had a bonus track, Always Unknowing. Is that get the Dolby Atmos treatment, too?

I spent some time listening on Apple Music, which is lossless. I like the new mix, although it has a different feel. There's more bass on my 5-channel (non-Atmos) system-- the kick drum definitely kicks. On the SACD version, you occasionally hear small tom-toms in the rear channel (the intro to "Take a Chance" is a good example) to spice things up a bit, but the new mix tends to keep all the drums up front. Brian's voice is a bit louder in the mix (it's quite clear on the SACD mix as well). I originally saw the SACD at Best Buy for $16, but I walked away thinking "I'll grab it later." Lucky for me it was still there the next day!

I play this SACD on my Oppo 203 mixed down to 4.0 on my Marantz Quadraphonic system, and it sounds phenomenal!

Hi there. You had me at AVALON. It happens to be one of the first cds I bought and was always amazed on how it sounded. It is classy... but most of all the nuances of the great album captured to perfection. I have it on cd somewhere and have it in the Roxy Music cd box set. May just stay put and enjoy the ones I have. Streaming Atmos is lossy, using Dolby Digital +. The Blu Ray releases are lossless using Dolby True HD. Yes, you can clearly hear the difference.

I cannot find it on Tidal, like others did. Maybe is somewhat region restricted, i dunno? I own SACD, but i'm of course intrigued by Atmos and I would happy pay for TrueHD Atmos disc, especially if it also contained original 5.1 mix , for direct comparison :)

Finally! Hey, I've been buying & playing these surround formats since their early inception around 2001 for DVD Audio & 2003 for SACD multichannel. I've owned this disc since it's release. I've always considered this performance as the best of all 5.1 mixdowns I've ever heard or owned. 'Ole Mr. Clearmountain once commented he's never-ever heard a more compressed recording that absolutely required surround treatment more than this studio recording. Folks that do not own this should be tripping over themselves to get their hands on it right now. FYI. Thanx

The SACD is SIMPLY INCREDIBLE and the Blu-Ray ATMOS would be OVER-THE-TOP!!! I noticed today that Rhino just put out a CHICAGO's GREATEST HITS on QUADIO / ATMOS !!!
