Thanks for the review, and also for removing any lingering doubts that I may of had for passing on this Doors Blu-ray. For what it's worth Mike I've never found any of your reviews to "suck" and always appreciate what you do here on TH-cam for us folks that love being surrounded by music. Keep it up sir and know that I'll be visiting your ebay store very soon. 👍🏻
Aw, thank you! I’ve learned not to take rude comments personally. They say more about the commenter than me. I take sincere criticism to heart. It has improved this channel over the years. Thank you for your support!
As always, great job with your informative review! I really love The Doors. I picked up the two disc CD "Best Of The Doors" in 1985. For me, the Atmos experience is new, fun and exciting because of the suprises in the mix--for example, the beginning of "Riders On The Storm". I also enjoy that the BD is lossless and has a punch. With the volume cranked up, my listening room, furniture and myself resonated with that Doors magic.
Another great, useful and very interesting comparison. I did by the atmos because of the great tracks like “the End” and “LA woman” that aren’t on the quad Blu-ray. I agree with all your comments about the atmos. Time to go back and enjoy the quad again 🙏🔆
I should have added that I too appreciate all the help you provide us. As I listened to the new atmos BR I kept thinking, “wonder what mike thinks of this?”
I really enjoy your reviews and value your recommendations! Just before the Rhino Atmos Versions of the Doors and Rumours were released I purchased the Doors Quadio SACD (which is indeed fantastic!) that you highly recommended and the Rumours SACD. So, I was wondering if you would like to do a shootout between the Rumours Blue Ray Atmos/5.1 and the 5.1 SACD versions? Also, I wanted to let you know that I have acquired many of the releases you have recommended much to the chagrin of my dear wife! We have a strong relationship so don't worry!
Working on a Rumours shootout, at the moment. Callait’s 5.1 appears on the new BD, so the SACD might be obsolete. Depends on the mastering, IMO. The DVD-A has a making of soundtrack, the band talking over instrumentals of the songs. I might upload that for everyone.
You ALWAYS so a great job with your reviews, news and your own music!!! I just purchased a shirt with your incredible logo off eBay! Ignore the trolls!
Some years ago, I bought an apparently counterfeit used version of the Perception box set at a local record store. It looked to be the real thing, but when I played some of the content at home, I found that the DVD-Audio tracks were not included on the DVDs; only stereo and DTS/Dolby 5.1 tracks were included. It was one of the few times I had to return a box set.
I have Best of on CD-4 LP and Rhinos’ The Singles 3 disc lack that is wonderful. I did buy the new Rhino disc and sad to see it’s inferior (haven’t listened to it yet) but you’re usually spot on. Only cost me $18 so not a huge loss :) thanks for your content!
I received my Doors "Best of" Blu-ray from Rhino late last week and I agree with your review. I find this release very schitsophrenic sound wise especially the Atmos mix. Unfortunately, some recordings just don't translate well and many on this disc qualify. The quad release is far superior sonically and for those looking for an immersive Doors experience, this is definitely the title to own. So far, the Rhino QUADIO releases are the superior "immersive/surround" program. Moving forward, the new Blu-ray/Atmos series can be very successful with the right artist/title/recording master choices. Case in point, the new Joni Mitchell archive series and the Asylum album box set that was just released.
I think you will really enjoy and appreciate this Joni Mitchell Archive QUADIO release. In my opinion, the best way to describe the quad mixes is that they are tastefully done and add positively to the overall listening experience. And after all, isn't that the ultimate goal anyway??? I look at it this way...some cars look good and perform better with a rear spoiler, unfortunately, MANY don't! The age old adage holds true for audio as well...Just because you can doesn't mean you should.
If the singles compilation had the LA Woman single, it would have been near perfect. Probably will get the whole LA Woman album on SACD to round out the Doors on multichannel. Any other notable singles missing from that compilation?
I'll stick with my SACDs for all their albums (or the other "The Singles" bluray I also have). Agree 100% that the first couple albums seem studio technology limited, the later albums have more material available for immersive mixes.
Unfortunately I agree with you on the atmos mix. Very disappointed. I only listened to first half and skipped around on the rest. The dts 5.1 sounded good to me but I need to listen more. The “singles” BR does sound best so far to me also. I had to get an older BR player because the Sony 800 new I had would not decode it properly as it was a quad mix. I also have the perception box set I got used a few years ago.
Just curious. Why would a newer bdp not decode the quad disc properly? I have the quad Blu-ray as well as the Perception box set. I own several players and the quad disc played fine. It sounds better on my main system due to the AVR & speakers. The center channels simply are silent. I’m not saying you’re wrong. I just want to know why. May be something I need to be aware of.
@@erieeddie8683 it has something to do with how the ghost channel is coded or decoded and the chip set it is using. It isn’t something that could happen to your player. I suspect most won’t do this.
I got my Sony x800 playing 4.0 properly. I think the key is to set the digital output to Auto. Mess with your settings and if you still have trouble drop me a line. We can troubleshoot.
I wish I had seen your review before ordering. Its currently winging its way across the pond along with Jagged Little Pill and Rumours. Hoping I disagree and find it a great experiance 😊
LOL "Garbage can reverb" TM. Unless you're a Doors superfan, I agree that the Best of 11, song version is more than sufficient with Apple or Tidal to fill in the blanks.

Useful review, I'll happily listen to my Preseptions box and not need the blu-ray
Happy to help. There are so many multichannel releases right now, that I have to be choosier than ever. I suspect many others must, too.
I was wondering where to get the original 'Quadraphonic' mix and now I know, thank you !
My pleasure! I fell in love with it on CD-4 vinyl. So happy to have it on lossless BD now.
@@lifeinsurround I must have gone through so many CD-4 copies as most are trashed and have lost the pilot tone to decode it, very frustrating...
I totally agree. Your sequence is mine too. Regards from Germany
Danke schön!
Bitteschön😅

I like the added studio banter, too. Just wish the Atmos mix provided a more consistent listening experience.

Aw, thank you. I’m very happy to be involved in the mutual enjoyment of multichannel music. The hits. The misses. All part of the experience.

Bummer! Did you ever find an official version? I’ve gotten burned by bootlegs a time or two…
@@lifeinsurround I never bothered.

Any comments on the stereo/2 channel sound?

I’d say Break on Through, for my taste. As it’s on the debut, there is no awesome multichannel version, sadly.

I see that "The Singles" is out of stock/print. That wasn't the case when I bought mine in 2021. Damn, should have bought a few!
Perception Box set is great.
I could handle a lot more groups putting out their entire discography in similar boxes, to be sure.

By the way the used player I got was also a Sony with different chipset.

Aw, I’m sorry. Give it a spin! You might take to it differently. If not, I bet it will resale well in a while.
Dolby Atmos: for movies, not for music.
DSD256 Stereo: that's all, folks!
