    Your book covers do have that uncanny AI look to them! They also don't look like other popular books in the genre. I'm sure you would sell more with covers that communicate: "This book was written by a human, and it's similar to these other books you already love!"

    • @itslindseeey
      @itslindseeey 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Unfortunately, it's AI that looks like this art style, not the other way around, and the artists that create this style have seen a huge rise in criticism and scrutiny just in the last couple of years. Having character art on a romantic fantasy cover is pretty common in the genre, but it does seem that typography and object covers are gaining popularity (possibly because it's more difficult to produce with AI, although they've always been around). I'm working on designing an alternate cover that's an object cover for each of the books for people who don't want a character on their books, but it's impossible to please everyone.

    Thanks for sharing your results. It's always interesting to hear about other people's marketing experiences. However, you mentioned something that caused me to be a little concerned for you: that you had a sales spike in your first month of publication because your friends and family all bought your book then. I know it sounds weird, but it might be a mistake to allow friends/family to buy your book--especially when it first comes out. That's because every time someone buys your book, the Amazon algorithm looks at that person's past buying patterns, then it starts pushing your book to people with similar buying patterns. That's great if the first buyers buy a lot of books in your genre. If not, your book is getting pushed to people who are just not interested. If this happens a lot in the first month or two of release, it can reportedly squelch your momentum. I don't have any direct experience of this, but it sounds plausible. Maybe someone out there knows more about this.

    Personally, I think it comes down to the writing. I've found some books where even fade-to-black was very spicy because of the build up of tension prior to that moment so that when it finally arrives you don't need to spell it out for the reader to be moved by it. And, similarly I've found some books that are graphically explicit that are much tamer in a way, because the emotional build-up or tension is lacking so that it becomes almost mechanical. I think that the emotional connections and the circumstances surrounding these scenes contribute so much to their impact for the reader. My two cents...

      Honestly I disagree. I think there’s a certain level of care needed to include sensual content in YA novels, but teenagers do have sex, and they deserve to be able to read books which reflect their experience, and educate them on healthy sexual dynamics.

    • @KewlImp
      @KewlImp 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@lunafowler5736 And this is my less than subtle counter, are what point are we just reading kids having sex? 18 years old is fine, but anything less than that and you're reading CP.

      @KewlImp pornography is a particular genre of media made with the sole purpose of getting people off. A sex scene between teenagers in a YA novel is not made with that purpose. People write non-pornographic sex scenes in novels all the time. YA novels overall often seek to educate, and their inclusion of sex is, from what I remember reading as a teen, also towards an educational end. As a teen, a big way that I learned about what safe and consensual sex is supposed to look like was from YA books. Obviously if a writer includes a sex scene between underage teens in a YA novel, they have to be very careful of how they write it. However, you sound like Moms for Liberty campaigning to ban Looking for Alaska because of the blowjob scene.

    • @lunafowler5736
      @lunafowler5736 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@KewlImp porn is a genre with the sole purpose of getting people off. I haven’t read a single YA novel where I saw that as a purpose at all. YA in general seeks to educate, and from what I remember reading as a teen, any sexual content included in the books I read was towards an educational end. Many sex scenes in books discuss sex without being pornographic. I gained a lot of knowledge on consent and safety by reading YA novels which included sex as a teen. Obviously authors should be very careful writing these scenes involving teens. However, you sound like a Moms for Liberty freak trying to get Looking For Alaska banned for its explicit scene.

    • @itslindseeey
      @itslindseeey 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In my opinion, it really depends on how it's written. Even thinking about The Fault in Our Stars (a very popular, award winning YA novel that I read when I was maybe 17) there was a "spicy" scene -- and it was much more tame than some of the fanfiction I'd been reading. Obviously I'm not recommending people go around writing full-on open door erotica, but when it's done tastefully and with intention, it can be a good tool for emotional storytelling and education about consent. The truth is, some kids are having sex at like 13 years old, and if they're never given any guidance about the emotional, psychological, and physical implications (either through the education system, their parents, or safe forms of media) it makes engaging in those acts even more dangerous.

    My goal is to bring transparency to the publishing industry, which is why I make these income videos as well as monthly videos that include a slightly more detailed look at what I do for marketing. In this video, I did not mention expenses. The main reason for that is that I do my own cover design, interior formatting, proof reading/ editing, and marketing (th-cam.com/video/kVU1lorUWjY/w-d-xo.html). I actually published for under $100 (th-cam.com/video/Ol9pV4FPO8w/w-d-xo.html). The key to making any money is controlling cost.

Otherwise some may dismiss your profit claims. Every profit eqution includes costs, and you completely left that out on this video.

      Thanks for the concern. So far I haven't had anyone be dismissive or critical; everyone's been very supportive. Unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't allow you to just write over a video and upload a new version, which is why I said I'll include it in future videos (I do monthly income reports as well). I'll add a disclaimer in the description and a pinned comment as well for this video; thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    Absolutely fabulous video, thank you so much for your transparency. Sorry to bother, just two / three questions (beware I´m european so I don´t have enough knowledge of american culture, and I don´t know much about self-publishing): - Do you know why is march your best month? Is it something cultural and global in US, that march is the month where people read / buy books the most, or is there a different reason? - Do you know your readers in Amazon (have a list or a database of them), or at least has Amazon system a way to contact first readers, in order to push notify them about your other next books? - In that sense, have you analyzed if there is a correlation between pages read and next books bought? Apparently, the more pages read in the first should give a higher probability of buying a second on the series, but that would be great to calculate by the real numbers, and maybe you can have them, by reader. Anyway, thank you so so much in advance. Keep the writing adventure! Regards from Spain!

      Thank you so much! To answer your questions... - I think in March I had a couple of "viral" videos over 20k views on tiktok, so that definitely helped get word out about the book. - We don't get a way to collect email addresses from Amazon, but there is an option to follow author pages on Amazon and their system will notify those who are subscribed when a new book comes out. Otherwise, we have to independently build our own email lists. - I haven't seen a huge read-through rate yet (I'm theorizing that it'll go up when the series is complete, but who's to say lol)

      @@itslindseeey Thank you so so much for the info, so openly. I just can wonder how difficult getting readers loyalty is, especially in a (digital) era where we consume (digital) books like snacks; it’s not easy to remember the author or that cover, that title, as we used to (in my opinion). I believe that even Sanderson will see in his data that the number of readers who read his books is decreasing (in the sense that un % of readers who have read the first of any of his sagas, do not read all of them), even though he has very loyal readers (also because he writes on various topics and for different ages, of course). But without a doubt, how he generates community is a process to investigate, from which to learn. Again, thank you very much, sorry for my english, you are a real treasure.

      It’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) it’s and organization most known for setting up a challenge where you write a 50k word novel in November. But they’ve had some controversial stuff happen in their organization over the past couple years.

    Two days ago I woke up and wrote a 1200 word outline. Oyt of nowhere. I haven't done any writing in nearly two years. Sometimes something clicks,and everything falls into place. Other times, we just need a break to unwind or recharge. Writing is a journey. It has ups and downs. Ride the waves. Paddle through the troughs. Writing is life, and life is writing. Keep up the great work!

    Just one book written and self-published. Taking romance writing classes and a screenwriting class helped me immensely to figure out how to write a good story (along with reading a lot of the romance genre). The romance classes required submitting short pieces for class and teacher critique - perfect opportunity to start the novel I had in mind. Really tough part was reading the critiques from fellow students and teachers. Tougher was deciding what critique input was valid and what was not. Now four months since my novel was published, I am trying to figure out how to get the book noticed by people who aren't family/friends. It's a struggle. I have an idea for a second book - turning a secondary character in the first book into the heroine of the next book. But I don't have much more than who she is - story arc still eludes me. And I really want to generate a little more in sales on the current novel before investing time and money in a second book. With all that said, I enjoy your frank and interesting videos on your journey. Thank you.

      It's cool you're thinking of turning a secondary character into a heroine for your next book! That can be a great way to expand the world and give a new perspective. Yeah critique can be tough when you're really emotionally invested. Congrats on publishing; marketing and creating awareness is definitely a struggle so many of us face. I do have some marketing tips out but plan on making more videos about the topic. Marketing by Shelby is another good channel to follow for author marketing advice.

    How do you stay motivated when drafting sequels (or even prequels) in a series? Standalones come very easy for me, but I sometimes have stories that end in cliffhangers and I want to know what will happen next! But I haven't successfully written a connected (even interconnected) sequel in about 8 years. I have one series in particular that I really want to finish the sequel for--in 2020, it was going to be a trilogy, then I thought it would only be one book, but it needs 2 for all the dots to connect and the story to come full circle. I have a few people who are still waiting to know what comes next, but I've been struggling. ♥

    • @itslindseeey
      @itslindseeey 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think I stay motivated because I also want to know what happens LOL! Honestly, my characters are very persistent, and I keep getting sparks of inspiration and ideas for each of their stories. It helps me to write the scenes I'm most excited for and work outwardly from there to build the rest of the story. That's awesome that you've got some very loyal readers!

    A question for Series Vs Standalones. How is the worth of a standalone and a series when it comes to making the first book would you rather have a person find your books from a standalone to then go look at your other works or would you rather have them find you from a series to know there is more in the future if they want to say and wait?

    • @itslindseeey
      @itslindseeey 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Incomplete series are tough to market because there are people who won't read a series unless they can binge it, but I've seen a lot more people lately that are fine waiting for more books if they liked the ones that are out. That's a tough question! I'll answer it more in depth in another video, but I think I'd rather have them find the series because then you know they like that specific world and cast of characters. Versus with a standalone, they might like that story and resonate with something in there but not necessarily the series.
