The Gascoyne Odyssey - Part 5: Astrophotography at London Bridge, Sandstone
This is Part 5 of a epic road trip exploring the amazing landscapes and night skies of the Gascoyne and mid-west regions of Western Australia with photography buddy Virat Shah.
We covered some 4000km over 8 days and managed 7 consecutive nights of shooting nightscapes in what must surely be some of the darkest skies on the planet.
This episode covers our final night, scouting and shooting around the arch shaped basalt rock formation known as London Bridge in Sandstone.

@@MartinFransson Thanks Martin, I have been travelling a bit the last month and it has given me a renewed appreciation for how lucky we are 🙌
A great episode with some amazing images and time lapses. "We are going to have an easier evening".....stays out until 0430!!! Massive commitment guys.
@@paulharrison8579 Haha, thanks Paul... That's the way we roll 😂
Yay - that was so good to have seen something of such an adventure. The images are fantastic! I did enjoy one towards the end where you and Virat were under the arch. Enjoy the next adventure hey.
@@denisesavage2382 Thanks so much for lasting the journey Denise. I'm definitely more motivated to keep creating when I know people are enjoying the content
@@GrowPhotography I'm definitely enjoying what you create and share. Be encouraged.
Brilliant astro- imaging expedition which captivates from start to finish. I admire both your dedication to the pursuit of the hobby. I think that your capture of the primal beauty of Western Australia and its night sky is astonishing. May I suggest that you continue to make travelogues of the lesser known areas of Western Australia.
@@martincampbell2073 Thanks so much for the kind words Martin. Western Australia has much to offer the astrophotopher and I will certainly continue to explore as much as budget and time constraints allow.
I really like how you show the individual images, the stack and edit. And who could avoid being jealous of those dark skies... great work!
@@MartinFransson Thanks Martin, I hoped it would be helpful to see how the images is brought together. And yes, we are a little spoilt for dark skies although we covered a 4000km loop on this trip to abbess them 🤣
Thanks for letting us join you for that beautiful night. And that landscape is really nice for astro! Wish we had something like that here 🙂
What a proper trip and nice images! The question is how long will you two need to recharge your batteries :D.
I reckon it took me about a month Matej 😂, catching covid straight after I got home didn't help 🤦
@@GrowPhotography oh man, what a timing. Hope its more mild and nothing serious.
Nice final video for this great adventure and experience. I enjoyed to watch the beautiful landscape and night sky images in all the videos. I wait you and Virat for other adventures.

Outstanding Greg! What an epic journey you and Virat have made! Amazing pictures, day and night! Thank You for all the hard work you guys put into these video's!!!

Thanks Greg & Virat - I have thoroughly enjoyed all your videos & in particular your Gascoyne Odessey series. Do you use the Sky Replacement method with most of your night images or some other Blending method ?? Thanks again mate - awsome.
Thanks so much for watching Michael. I use a manual masking sky replacement method - I use Affinity Photo for editing, not Adobe
Cheers Greg. Thankyou. 👍
I loved these Gascoyne adventures from you two. Thanks for sharing them! Must have been exhausting though... 7 nights 😅
Thanks so much Jeroen, we had a blast creating this - going to be hard to top.
And yes, definitely exhausting - caught covid for the first time as soon as I got home 😂
@@GrowPhotography oh no! That sounds aweful :-(. You being in Indonesia at the moment tells me you are recovered by now fortunately?
@@StarScaperPhoto Yeah, that was back in June. Unwell for a week but then all good. Hope the break is healing well for you.
Still very much enjoying this series. Some fantastic places to experience.
Brilliant end to the odyssey. That formation is amazing. And all the shoes are great. Well done to both of you ❤ (I remember those flies from when I was over there as a kid. Unrelenting)
Thanks so much Jaune - the flies were pretty crazy the whole trip.
What a fantastic conclusion to a wonderful adventure, Greg. Stunning images yet again! London Bridge looks like an awesome location to shoot from. So pleased you both got what you wanted from the trip - definitely one for the memories! 👏
@@nightscapejournals Thanks Paul, the last night was bittersweet. We had been looking forward to this location all trip, were extremely tired but also sad it marked the end. The weather closed in for several days after this so we wouldn't have been able to squeeze anything else in
An excellent series, well done both of you. Would be interested to know how many km you drove in total.
Thanks Stephen, we covered 4000km in 8 days, at least one third of which was on gravel roads. We managed 7 consecutive nights of astro.
@@GrowPhotography no wonder you both looked so tired towards the end 😂. Have you got any plans to show a technical video about how you stitch everything together?
@@stephencarter9192 I haven't really done any post processing specific videos because most people don't use the same software as me. Although most of my stitching is done in Microsoft ICE (MSICE) which a lot of people use. I can have a think about doing post processing videos if there is a demand but there are quite a few out there on other channels already.
An end to an epic adventure for you guys. I remember you inviting me along when we were out for one of our summer shoots, these videos make me admonish myself for missing out. London Bridge has been on my bucket list for a while, that last shot of you two standing in front of it gives good scale, it's a bit bigger than I imagined....hopefully it lasts a few decades more before mother nature decides it's time for it to come tumbling down....as all arches eventually do. Overall, superb images from every single night of the trip and surely the judges at this year's Astrofest will have a hard time narrowing down both of your collections to decide which one is crowned the nightscape/astrotourism nightscape image of the year because I'm 99% certain you guys will take both of those prizes....it's not every year WA astrophotographers get to shoot these areas and given the spectacular beauty of each location it will make them all stand out among the crop of 'standard' Milky Way locations everybody else has shot. So, congratulations in advance for one or both of you on your inevitable awards 🏆😅😊
Thanks so much for the kind words, they are particularly meaningful as both Virat and I are in awe of your work and your generosity in terms of sharing your knowledge. It was so hard narrowing down to just 5 images for astrofest - I think the competion is wide open again this year.
@@GrowPhotography appreciate that Greg. Virat convinced me to enter this year, I was not going to bother this year as I got some confusing feedback from them after the last comp. In the end, given there is no competition next year, I thought I may as well give it a shot. Hope your Indonesia trip goes well...
Well, you both made it to the end of the Gascoyne Adventure! The landscapes in WA for astro that you have shown us have proven to be exciting and epic. London Bridge holds up well against some of the arches in Utah and made for a great foreground subject. How many kilometres did you end up covering on the road trip? Might be time to trade in that SUV Virat 😁🤣
@@geoffsharpe6456 Thanks Geoff, we only have the one London Bridge though unfortunately 😊. We covered 4000km in the end, with a significant percentage (third?) on gravel. The SUV handled it well but the conditions were ideal - bit more rain and it would have been a different story.
Haha. Geoff and it was a lot of driving (4000KMS) and happy with how my car tackled the roads.. my tyres didn't like the gravel and had to replace the tyres straight after the trip,.. there's still red dirt that is not going away from the car despite it being deep cleaned.. I am not that well organised and way behind my editing workflow!
@@ViratShah Thanks Virat, I'm looking forward to seeing your processed images 😎

Another epic video of the Gascoyne Odyssey. I really liked your Walga Rock images with the arching panorama of the Galaxy. The distances you are travelling on dirt roads is impressive. Maybe a sponsorship from the car manufacturer could be in order to highlight the Outback dirt road performance! 😎😁👍
@@geoffsharpe6456 Thanks Geoff, I was particularly happy with that image too - will be one of my entries in Astrofest 2024 this year. We were fortunate the gravel was in reasonable condition - I don't believe that is always the case and heavy rain we encountered driving back to Perth did apparently takes its toll. We probably dodged a bullet there 😊. Maybe we could reach out to an All Terrain tyre manufacturer next trip.
