What an awesome video! Both very entertaining and very educational. I really appreciate all the effort you put into sharing your work. The final products are works of art, but so is the way you document the technial processes in immaculate detail. You win the internet today. #trending
Thanks again for sharing your astro adventure Greg. Beautiful relaxing night, despite the rush in the end it seems! Makes me really look forward to the first core outing here soon!
Thanks Massimo, sleep is overrated anyway 😉. Glad you enjoy the soundtrack, I spend more time than I would like to admit working out what music to use but feel it makes a big difference 🙌
Good to see you have Your first Milky way image for the New Year I'm still trying for mine due to clouds ruining my to two outings! My tip would be to do sky first and foreground last and make use of the blue hour ? And Richard comment is good too about the bloated stars gives a different look
Thanks so much John. Such a shame the weather hasn't been playing nice for you. Great tip about using blue hour for the foreground - and that is in effect what I did for the 35mm shot. It was definitely a balancing act between leaving the sky shots long enough to maximise the height of the core above the horizon, but not so long they get washed out with dawn and/or zodiacal light.
Thanks Trevor, yes was pleasantly surprised this area of ridging survived when others didn't. It's so nice shooting the rising core in the pre dawn colours 👌
Super video and gorgeous images, Greg. You seemed to have some fairly strong zodiacal light as well, I think? Always enjoy coming along for the ride - thanks for all the effort that you put in. 👍
I think you are right Paul but it was a bit hard to tell because Venus was so bright as well, but considering the time we were shooting there should have been zodiacal light.
Thanks Domenic, I need to be careful I don't go to hard to early 😊. Just watched your latest video too, good move with the Skywatcher mini - a much more secure unit than the MSM
Great video Greg. If I heard you correctly, when you mentioned your camera settings for the time lapse, did I hear you correctly to say you use Program Mode? If that is right, would you mind expanding a little on your experience using P Mode for night photography. I have used P Mode for night photos on a very limited basis and find it an interesting alternative. Thank you for sharing your work.
Hi William, yes I often use P mode for timelapses, especially if there is going to be variable lighting conditions like night to day and vice versa. The Nikon Z cameras have excellent capabilities in this area - basically doing exposure ramping. I have auto ISO enabled, but have it limited to a max of 3200. The timelapse settings also limit the shutterspeed so it can't go over the interval setting (usually 15s to avoid star trails).
Thank you for the update Greg. You are the first photographer I've come across using this interesting technique. My D780 incorporates some of the Z-6 features so I think I'll give it a try. Really appreciate you making and sharing your videos.
@@JauneMacReadyI recently acquired the dji Osmo pocket 3 and am very impressed so definitely would be looking at a DJI drone too. Was considering the Fly 3 as it has the 2 cameras but the mini might be a better intro to drones
@@GrowPhotography I'm so tempted with the Pocket 3! Fortunately for me, and my bank balance I'm controlling myself 🤣 Have a check about any laws on drones in your area of the world. The Mini ones are under 250g so can go pretty much anywhere without worry. Anything above that weight can have restrictions. But if you're flying out in the wild that isn't going to be such an issue. Happy drone hunting 👍
Wow looks so amazing mate. Where are you heading this new moon? Moon, Tue and Wed, weather looking pretty good in Perth 😊. And did u use DJI OSMO Pocket 3 and mic to make this vlog? Looks clean!
Thanks for watching. I'm probably taking a break this new moon cycle as Virat and I have a big trip planned for next month. Yes, the vlog was all shoot on the osmo p3 - it is a pleasure to use.
Hi, Greg. This video was suggested by the magic TH-cam algorithm a few days ago, and I'm glad I watched it. Thanks for sharing your experiences. I live in Sydney, but one of my daughters is moving to Perth within the next month, so my fatherly duties will require some visits to the west, which will have to include my shooting some nightscapes in your part of our country. I now know of one location to try when I get over there! What brand/model is the bag you have slung between your tripod legs? I need something like that, so any info you can give me would be appreciated.
That's awesome to hear TH-cam is recommending my channel to like minded photographers 😍. I bought the stone bag from Amazon a few years ago now but just had a search and I think it is a Vanguard SB-100 Stone Bag. Very useful when you're fumbling around in the dark - I even put stones in it one windy night 🤣. Happy to recommend some locations when you're planning your trip.
While I don't actually use a slider myself I have thought about getting one. The idea of having to lug more gear puts me off though. Check out @nightscapeimages.richard channel, he has a few videos on the subject. If I did pull the trigger I would probably look at 1m (?).
The one photo of the tree with blob stars...was that intentional? Better to get stars slightly out of focus and larger so the star trails are more impressive?
It wasn't intentional but rather a happy mistake 😊. I forgot to refocus on the stars after shooting the foreground tree resulting in slightly out of focus stars 🤦It does result in a bolder style of star trails.
@@dhanieariebali We're nearly neighbours 😊. I am actually going to be in Bali in early September. Doing a Benjamin Barakat workshop starting mid August
Finally, the Milky Way season is BACK! Thanks for sharing!!
My pleasure, it does take a very early start to catch it though unfortunately 😊
Great video again Greg. I liked all the images and really enjoyed the bloated star trails. Well done.
Thanks so much Richard, I have to confess the bloated star trails were a little bit of a happy accident - but can we keep that to ourselves 🤦😂

Thanks so much for the kind words Stephen, really appreciate the positive feedback 🙌
Thanks again for sharing your astro adventure Greg. Beautiful relaxing night, despite the rush in the end it seems! Makes me really look forward to the first core outing here soon!
Thanks Jeroen, yeah my time management was a bit wanting on this occasion. Trying to leave the sky shots as late as possible was nearly my undoing 😏
Great video Greg!
Thankyou, glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Cool stuff, loved the last few Z6 pics. Keep them coming 👍👍👍
Thanks so much Keith, and appreciate the subscribe 🙌
Beautiful photos, startrail and timelapse, excellent work Greg and Paul
Thanks so much Mario, the early starts are a bit challenging but the results pay off 👍
That tree is amazing looking. All is good
Thankyou, I love shooting the night sky around these salt lakes
Nice work chaps 👏🏻👏🏻🌌

Amazing adventure Greg and Paul.. great timelapse and love all the images.. good to see the pressure ridges remain.. I will need a trip here in Feb..
That core rising before dawn was so welcoming 😍
Great reliving the night and some fantastic images Greg, your startrails from the timelapse looks really good too
Thanks Paul, I was initially a bit disappointed with the star trails as in my rush I managed to mess up the focus a little but they have grown on me 😊
another cracking video Greg, those subtle pastel hues are so nice.....ridges look as impressive as when we were there a week or two earlier 😊
