Fountain Pen Ink Review: Birmingham Pen Company: Abandoned Shipyard | Ink Outside the Box #1
10:54 I like your "NPD" card. Do you keep the catalog of them?
No nonsense, straight to the point, great lighting to show off the inks. Nice work, lovely inks (haven't heard of most of them).
Wow, I've never seen a more detailed review of a fountain pen 😮 Are you an engineer by trade ?
My eye always immediately goes to the Benu
I am really trying to avoid multiples of the same type of pen, but there are so many beautiful Benu pens and I have seriously fallen in love with the one I have. I have a really heavy shimmer in mine right now and it writes like a dream!
Nicely done! great set.. and camera work. Frank in Colorado
Thank you so much Frank!
Cool inks! I love hearing your impressions of inks and different ink/pen combinations. I know that Troublemaker, Pennonia and Papier Plume are going to be in my future purchases this year. I've been using Troublemaker's Opon Channel Blue a great deal last year. It's much more teal than blue and I love how it writes and it's color really connects with me.
I have a soft spot for Troublemaker inks, but I have not tried that one. It is going on my list! I do love a green leaning teal! Thank you for stopping by!
I do love that#1 ink for sure
I really hope it sticks around! I will be very sad if they discontinue it!
spelled Pittsburgh.
Love your picks! The Troublemaker Blue Guitar take is not a bad take at all I don't think.. what a gorgeous blue! Definitely have some new inks on my wishlist.
I waited around to try Blue Guitar for so long because I figured it was just a boring blue. It was a really happy surprise when it ended up being as interesting as it is. I am honored to have added inks to your list when you have likely added about 300 to mine!!
3:45 - Speaking of green inks, I highly recommend you try Monteverde California Teal if you haven't already. It is my favorite ink and constantly in at least 3 pens I own. I keep a Platinum 3776 Laurel Green pen perpetually loaded with this ink, plus some 2 other pens that I like to rotate around.
will second this! such a great ink!
Oh yes, that looks beautiful! I am going to have to add that to the list. I really want to find some good greens. Thank you for the recommendation!
Yellow and purple mixed together can give the most beautiful palest of greys
Very interesting.. I might have to play around with that. I do love greys!
Love the Don Quixote, too. I initially bought it for the name but fell in love with it! 😍
I am a huge sucker for literary themed inks, especially ones that move past the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland (though I usually love those too). I mean, a 1984 ink? Yes please! Wearingeul has really been a hit for me this year.
When you are watching as a hungarian randomly and you find out that there is an internationally accessible Hungarian ink brand. :o Nice pronunciation on "viharfelhő", congrats. not one of our easiest words to say...
Thank goodness!! I was worried that I really messed it up and I really do love Pennonia too much to completely flub the name! Thank you!
new subscribers. I love your ink choices and hearing your reasons behind your choices. I want the colorverse color so badly now. what a shame it seems to only be available in that duo with an illegible color for me. haha.
I was really broken hearted when I realized it was the small bottle. I like the idea of the themed sets, but I really wish the inks were available separately!
I’m surprised you don’t like the Benu nibs.!! I Love all the Schmidt nibs.!! I Enjoyed ur video.
Funny you would say that! I bought the pen intending to change the nib out to something more "fun" and after using the pen since I got it, I'm not changing anything! That nib is great!!!
Great video, as usual. I added a bunch of these to my wishlist. 👀
Thank you so much!!
I really like your videos. I agree with a few of your favorites, #4 & 5 are so good and I am a big fan of Birmingham Pen Co. inks, Aqueduct is a great one. I’ve bought a few FPR pens after seeing you use them, too.
Thank you so much!! Looking back at last year's inks for this video really showed me where I should try to branch out. I didn't think I would ever like a brown ink and here we are, so I am sure that there are other colors I have been avoiding out there that would be amazing too. I also want to try to branch out and include more brands. My list was pretty heavily concentrated on a few, but I tend to buy a bunch of inks from one brand at a time. I hope you like the FPR pens. They are in very heavy rotation on my desk.
I think the bottle of Don Quixote I had was wonky somehow. It was so dry I couldn't get it to work in any pen! I'll have to hunt down a sample and try again as the colour is lovely.
Not that I would ever wish a wonky bottle of ink on you, but I hope my bottle isn't the wonky one! I will be seriously depressed, but I know what you mean. There was a Colorverse ink that so many people said that they loved and my sample was a mess and so very dry.
Always love your videos. So happy to see this!
I always love your videos too!! Thank you for stopping by!
Nice selection, thank you! My favorite at the moment: Sailor Manyo Yu
Oh that is a great color! I will have to check it out!
You should keep that Diplomat Aero on your radar. It’s one of my favorite pens. If I heard correctly, you have a witchy vibe, so you might consider the Diplomat Viper. It has a more traditional slender design, but the etched snake-skin pattern really sets it apart. And it has the most wonderful magnetic cap I’ve ever experienced. I recently bought a couple Jinhao 62 pens, and I now know they’re copies of the Lamy ABC pen. They do come in some gorgeous color combinations, though, and they’re under $4.
That is great to hear because I really love the retro deco look of the Aero and I have stared at it on my screen many times without buying it. It definitely has a place on my list for 2025 though. The Viper looks great too! I only have one pen with a magnetic cap right now and I really like it. I cannot keep up with all the Jinhaos! I didn't even know about the 62, but you are right, the colors are amazing!
Hi, I just ordered a Magna Carta 650 in Midnight Blaze just before midnight on New Years eve.. What a way to start the new year! I can't wait for it to get here. Thank you for your review.
What a great color! I am excited for you!!
Hi, Thank you for introducing me to Kuretake inks.. I have a thing (lol) for Japanese pens and inks and looking into these inks they have some beautiful shades.. The one you showed was particularly intriguing as well as beautiful. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! I loved the two Kuretake inks that I tried, and I definitely want to try more in the coming year.
@@WhimsyofThings Definitely, I was just on their website looking at another set of colors they have.
She has very elegant hands. I forgot to examine the pen because I was looking at her hands. I will watch the video from the beginning now
Thanks for the advice, especially good for someone new to flex writing.👍🇦🇺
I’m glad it helped! Flex nibs can definitely be intimidating at first.
I love your description of the inks! Coke is a residue from burning coal….
I like your way of talking about pens...!
Thank you so much!!
Coincidentally, I watched your video the week before Thanksging. Pen Chalet had a similar deal on the Magna Carta 600 whicjlh is on my watch list. I ordered the same deal and its arriving quickly. My question to you is about the gray deals on Amazon. I bought a Pilot 912 FA on Amazon for quite a bit less than pen stores. I have been eying s custom urishi 845 and they are 60% of retail. Your thoughts?
I Forgot to mention, your reviews are elegant and thorough. The background music isn't my favorite, but your videography is on the money.
That is a great question. I know several people that have ordered grey market pens and have had no issues at all. They have received legitimate pens and were happy with the experience. I guess the issue comes in with the warranty. I have personally never had to do a warranty claim and I get so many of my pens second hand that it usually isn’t even an option. I guess it is one of those buyer beware situations and i would stick with listings that allow returns. I don’t have a huge ethical issue with it (other than general Amazon ooginess) since those pens are priced so much higher for the western market. The custom urushi 845 is a beautiful pen! I love love love the red version.
Also, funny you should mention the background music. It is bugging me too! You all are unfortunately victims of my videography and editing learning process and I highly appreciate anyone brave enough to suffer through my learning curve ◡̈ thank you so much for the compliment!
A fine review, Addie. Astute reviewing process, great aesthetics, superb production quality, and most of all, authentic! I think I'm convinced... the Magna Carta Mag 650 may be my next pen purchase.
Thank you so very much!! I hope that you love it if you end up getting it!
Where do you usually look for second hand pens?
Mostly the penswap board on Reddit. I have also gotten a couple things from Ebay. Some of the Discord servers out there that are run by other creators will have a for sale section.
Actually, just remembered another place! Pen Realm has a decent used pen section too that I like to keep an eye on. The extra bonus there is that the nib can be tuned for free and/or you can order a custom nib grind at the same time
What nibs do you have coming that you plan to switch in the Narwhal?
I have two nib assemblies from Osprey - a zoom nib and a double broad architect I want to try. I don’t know if either will work well, but they are both nib types I haven’t tried yet and if they aren’t great, I’ll just pull them out.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Wearingul Frankenstein ink. I ordered mine with a Scribo and didnt realize it was a glimmer ink lol. I love it so much I cant bring myself to switch it out. I know cleaning that pen will be a challenge.. Thanks for the video.
I am excited to have a larger size! I only had a smallish sample before and was very conservative with it. Shimmer samples can be weird too. I dont know if they always give a correct impression of how much or how little shimmer is in the actual ink. Wearingeul inks almost always make me happy!
@@WhimsyofThings agreed on Wearingul inks. The Frankenstein was my first and I have since added 4 or 5 more. I feel they perform quite well. Although I was a little disappointed by Anubis. I think I expected a darker base color. But such is the way of things.
Thanks for the video. I enjoyed when you walked through your wishlists and talked about which ones you typically see secondhand, etc. I have my eye on a Magna Carta. I was thinking Mag 650 but idk even know why I picked it necessarily. It seems like most Magna Carta Mags I see are 600s. Maybe I should pivot (or research more 😅)?
Also, thanks for the prices! It drives me nuts when people don’t share prices. Very helpful.
Thank you! I am working on the Mag600 review next/now and both the 600 and 650 are great pens. I think that Goldspot is the only place that has the 650 right now, which is why you see it more. Maybe? Just a guess. Honestly, i think it comes down to which body style you like better, they both use the same nib. I think you can generally get the 600 for less, especially if you don’t want one of the stacked resin versions (though that purple stacked resin 600 is still roaming around in my brain!)
I got the ink muddler a while back and was also surprised by how small it was. Loved seeing what you got. I picked up a few things and also made sure to have a budget and a list of the things I wanted. It definitely helps.
Yeah, i am not sure about the muddler! I definitely made a lot of assumptions about its size that were not based in reality at all. It would be a great tool to bring to an ink meet up or something since you can write and swatch with just that one thing. The list and budget really help me keep things under control, I am glad to hear you do the same! Thanks for watching!
Why would anyone want to watch almost 1 hr of this
Why would someone go out of their way to comment on something they already know the answer to?
Thank you so much for your review. I have the Magna Carta 600 and I’m thinking about getting the #650. Believe they both have the same nib but the body is different, nicer on the #650. Loved your Information Sheet on your pen, did you create that yourself?
Yes the body style on the 650 is nicer overall i think, and I do really love the look of the stacked resin. I should have my Mag600 video up tomorrow. The pen sheet is something I put together and is available as a free download in a few sizes on my community page ◡̈
Really liking the look of BPC Huckleberry!
If your FWP bottles leak you probably threw away the small rubber lid which stays on the bottle first time you open it. This lid has to be put into the cap. Anyway, thank you!
Good to know! I probably thought that was one of those disposable seals. Thanks!
Do you find that tiu need to fiddle with your FPR flex pens a lot? I want to try a flex pen, but I'm pretty new still to fountain pens and I'm not super comfortable messing with nibs and feeds (beyond using a brass shim).
I haven't had to fuss with the nibs themselves much. Out of all the FPR pens I have, I only had to change out one nib because it was too dry. I probably could have tried adjusting the nib, but since I had another nib, I decided to just change it out. I will say that the piston FPR pens (the Jaipur models) are more error prone. It seems like about every 5th fill or so, they start to leak ink through the nib when capped. Sometimes this leaking is small, and sometimes it literally dumps all of the ink out of the converter. The solution to that is usually to pull the piston out and apply silicone grease. The Himalaya versions use a proprietary threaded converter but could be converted to an eyedropper. I think the Himalaya is a better "beginner" option because you would only need to worry about applying silicone grease to the threads of the converter. The converter is much better on the version 2 of these pens though. Version 1 uses a plunger that is annoying. Ideally, if you have any pens with you like that would take a Jowo or a Bock nib assembly, FPR does sell both. This way you could get a flex nib and put it into a pen that you already enjoy. I do 100% recommend getting an ebonite feed as it makes more of a difference than you would think. The performance with a plastic feed is not as good at all. Changing out either a Jowo or Bock nib assembly is just a matter of unscrewing the nib assembly in the pen and screwing in the new assembly - very easy to do. Sorry for the wall of text! Please let me know if you have any other questions!
@WhimsyofThings thank you so much! I didnt realize they sold the nibs and feeds separately! Thats honestly a great option. I appreciate your help so much! 🖤
@ No problem at all!! It can all be overwhelming ◡̈
I've been enjoying your monthly inking videos and am quickly adding a number of inks to my wish lists. I appreciate how you are honest with the inks you don't like. It's very helpful. And I agree with your thoughts on Citrus Black completely. I was very excited to try it out but it's not all that attractive a color at all. The color change is cool but you're spot on about pressing too hard because it is so darn light right off the nib. Looking forward to your future videos!
Thank you! Ink color is such a personal preference that I sometimes feel bad saying when I don't like something just based on the color, but hopefully people know that is just my opinion! I just used Citrus Black this morning when I was doing my morning pages and I 100% decided that I just don't like it. I was excited for it too and I like the theory but not the ink itself at all. Thanks so much for stopping by!
To answer your question about the "coke" colour: coke is refined/distilled coal 🤓
That makes the most sense! They have a picture of a coke bottle on the ink, but maybe that is just because a lump of coal wouldn’t cut it visually haha
The more I used Loki Patera throughout the month, the more I sort of love it. Does anyone know of a similar ink color? It doesn't have to have the shimmer. I am trying Wearingeul's Don Quixote right now, and it is similar, but lighter.
I am used to write with flexi dip nibs. Having them on an oblique penholder and being used to write on a 52 degrees slant I have a question before investing in fountain pen flex: how is it writing with flexi fountain pen on a slant? Most videos I saw have showed writing with these pens on a vertical slant only.
I think a fountain pen would have the same issues that a straight pen holder would have. There are ways to get the slant with a straight pen holder, but I have heard that the resulting writing can have a tendency to have more issues with connectors or fine lines. I am sure it can be done, but if I am trying to get that slant, I tend to rely on rotating the paper a good bit. Rotating the pen to try to keep both tines in contact with the paper seems to result in more ragged writing, though less so with the nib on the Magna Carta than some of the stiffer steel flex nibs. Hopefully I understood the question correctly! Thanks for stopping by!
Next step is verifying that the nib will not be deformed by the usage. Some persons had this problem with Scribo's flex nib.
Yes, I could see that being an issue with a nib that is this soft. So far so good, but that is a long term issue so I will have to keep an eye on it.
So, may I ask how much you needed to write with it before it stopped having hard starts and railroading? I have that exact same issue and this pen is brand new for me. I do hope that use will make it work as it should, but currently I am not too happy at all. thank you :)
I would say that it took nearly a whole converter fill. It started behaving better near the end of the fill and then seemed fine on the next fill. I wasn't happy in the beginning either! I am not sure why it acted like that with me either. I ran some dish soap water through it to get rid of any contaminates from the manufacturing process and used an ink that I knew pretty well. I would reach out to them if it is still acting up after you go through a converter of ink. It is possible that there is something wrong with your nib or feed that goes beyond what I was talking about in this video.
Thank you so much for this close-up comparing of different flex nibs! That's great! I learned a lot today.
I am glad it was helpful! I was very happy that it was giving me a different experience with flex compared to my other pens. I like my other pens a good bit, but having something different was really nice.
Definitely looking like a vintage Parker 51. Interesting flex and eventual lack of railroading/flow consistency. Great review!
Thank you! I think the next flex pen I get will be something vintage again. The one vintage flex I have is pretty stiff.
There is a piston tool you can get from Nahvalur to fix that pen, I think. Reach out to Karyna from Karyna Loves to Plan. She went through this. Good luck!
I have the tool to remove the piston, but I will check to see if there is a different tool to fix. Thanks for letting me know!
Your little swatch cards for your currently inked are so cute! Pretty neat because you can organize them by color or by pen or brand or anything and you can change your mind about how to organize them.
Thank you so much! They started as a way to use up some scrap paper i had left after cutting down paper for my journal and I am really glad i went that route. I like moving them around like you said and writing notes on the back. Thanks so much for stopping by!
