Time for Tea with Goodness, a Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics STP
Hi everyone! It's been a long time since I last uploaded but sorry for that - second year has hit me workload-wise!
Back in November I spoke with Goodness, who's in her first year of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics STP🌟 it's a bit of a lesser-known specialism so it took me a little while to find someone but I'm so glad I got to speak with her because she gave a fab insight into what they get up to! They cover both the molecular and serology side of things to try to find the best donor for people needing transplants - they're so crucial especially with the long list of patients that are needing these.
We also spoke about her background before the STP and how she found the 2021 applications - which we're obviously a bit different to the years before! She has an insta account showing more of what she gets up to and to help others so head to @stphistoimmuno
Also - blood and organ donation is so important so if you can, please think about donating (blood: www.blood.co.uk/ and to check you're organ donor status go here: www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ )
See you soon!
Meg

Time for Tea with Alice, Disability Support
มุมมอง 4162 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone 🌟 This is the first video in (hopefully) the series I’ll be doing where I speak with trainees on the programme with different disabilities, to see what their experiences was of getting support whilst on the STP. I spoke with Alice today, who’s a 2nd year trainee on the Respiratory and Sleep Science specialism! She has ADHD, depression, anxiety and OCD and we spoke about her experien...
Time for Tea with me, Reflections on 1st Year
มุมมอง 8883 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone 🌟 so we’re coming to the end of 1st year, which is a bit mad considering it feels like it should be about April.. I did an Instagram post about what the start of the STP was like but this talks more about what I liked and didn’t like so much etc! This is by no means everyone’s experience and everyone’s training is different but I wanted this account to be an honest representation of...
Time for Tea with Rosy, an Imaging with Ionising Radiation STP
มุมมอง 4723 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone! Amazingly, it's not been a huge gap between videos this time 🌟 I spoke with Rosy, an Imaging with Ionising Radiation trainee based at Addenbrookes a couple of weeks ago. Her specialism is quite broad - she covers both diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine but everyone seems to then specialise into one of them once you're applying for jobs. Rosy started the STP as a Radiotherapy...
Time for Tea with Anny, a Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences STP
มุมมอง 8873 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone, long time no see! It's been a busy few months and since I last posted people have been getting offers, so well done if you've managed to secure a post :) I spoke with Anny yesterday, a 1st year Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences trainee based in Leeds. I had no idea (surprise) what CPS involved, but it's one of those specialisms that is so important and if it wasn't going on in the b...
Time for Tea with me, Looking to Next Year's Intake
มุมมอง 1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone! I wanted to do another interview video for if you didn't quite get one this year. First off, I'm really sorry you didn't get the result you wanted - it's disappointing but it's not a no forever, just this year. I didn't get an interview my first time around, so thought it might be useful for me to talk about what I did in the year in between to improve my application! I split the v...
Time for Tea with me, Insights into Interviews
มุมมอง 3.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone! I really haven’t been on the ball with posting recently, so I’m sorry for that. This video is all about the interviews, allocations should be coming out soon so WELL DONE if you’ve got one 🌟 it is so much work and you’ve done so well to get here! It was a bit daunting to know what to revise/how to prep for this as it was what I’d been trying to gear up to for a few years, so hopefu...
Time for (Iced) Tea with Liam, a Radiotherapy Physics STP
มุมมอง 6053 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone, I hope you enjoyed the (albeit fleeting) sunshine earlier in April when I filmed this 😹 a little while ago I spoke with Liam, a third year trainee in Radiotherapy Physics, currently writing his dissertation and preparing for the IACC. He completed a PhD before starting the STP, but wanted to use his scientific understanding in a clinical setting. Radiotherapy Physics involves targe...

มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone! I filmed this a little while ago but had a lot on with moving house and work so am just posting it now - sorry about that. I spoke with Ben, a third year trainee on the Clinical Microbiology stream of the Welsh STP. Obviously, a lot of his time recently moved to COVID testing, which was a whole different ball game, however before that he had such a varied training plan. Part of his...

Hi everyone, I hope everyone’s having a nice week so far! I spoke with Alex, who is a first year Clinical Engineering (Undefined) STP based in London. Alex ha...
Time for Tea with me! A Healthcare Science Week Case Study
มุมมอง 5423 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone! A huge part of why I started these videos is because healthcare scientists are involved in 80% of diagnoses but often people don't know about us! So, I thought I'd do something a little bit different to celebrate healthcare science week and show what might happen when a sample comes through our doors🌟 This case study is an example referral of what we might see in the Genetics depar...

She'd done a communication course around GI when at uni but didn't have lots of in depth experience in it before the programme. She actually works with...

If I get judged on using filler words, I'll be a bit disappointed lol. My friend had a stutter and managed to stop this by using filler words. I have heard many people use filler words, even people considered debaters like Mr Peterson, he says " you know" quite a lot.

It is quite competitive so you'd need to show your understanding and potentially, if you didn't get in this year, do some further research to help strengthen your application. I'd definitely give it a shot though as you get lots of experience from applying - I got in on my 2nd try and the 1st application helped me so much in my 2nd!

Hi Joseph, hopefully this video helped shed a bit of light on what GC trainees get up to! I'm on Genomics so can't give super specific advice but it's really important to show your interpersonal skills in action - you're going to be working with people and discussing difficult situations so try to show where/how you've supported people previously. @diary_of_a_trainee_gc on instagram has some really good specific advice for Genomic Counselling as well. I'd definitely write down all of your points and think about why they are important for clinical scientists/how they show that you would be a good trainee :) I hope that helps?

Some of the questions that are potentially of interest, HSST vs STP. Why not apply directly to HSST? anyone could possibly share their experience going directly to HSST? How is the relationship in the workplace between both STPs and HSSTs? Why those who have already PhDs didn't apply to HSST rather than STP?

    • @stpteabreakchats8932

    • @stpteabreakchats8932
      @stpteabreakchats8932 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Marwa, the hospitals that offer places change each year depending on the needs of the department, so I can't say where will be offering CBI next year unfortunately. However, the NSHCS website shows the different places on offer this year so you could take a look there! nshcs.hee.nhs.uk/programmes/stp/applicants/stp-posts-2021/ In response to your other question - you can't do 2 specialisms in one, however during first year you do rotate around other departments to get a view of what they do. GI Physiology trainees don't rotate around Genomics though. To get more of an idea of what you'd be learning, the NSHCS website has the curriculum and it gives you a really good insight! Thanks for watching and good luck next year! Meg

Great video, thank you! Super informative about how samples like this are handled from the perspective of a clinical scientist. Also really important to remember about the patient at the other end and their emotional/mental well-being. Hope you're staying safe and well too
