How The Crow (1994) Changed the Movie Industry Forever
Before the reboot of The Crow is released next week, I have more to say about the dark prince of 90s Cool.
In my “best of 90s Cool” video, I skimmed over how The Crow (1994) led us into the black trench coat era of action movies. To me, this fact was always obvious. There was nothing like The Crow before its release. The only movies that came close were Batman Returns and Darkman, but they had their differences. After the Crow, there was an influx of dark action movies featuring all-black, dark, and mysterious anti-heroes, doing gun fu, martial arts, and sword fighting. There’s an entire generation of movies and TV shows that all owe something to The Crow. The Matrix (1999), Blade (1998), Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1999), Underworld (2003), and Daredevil to name a few.
This influence led to a domino effect. Wrestling had The Crow Sting, and from there you had characters like Jeff Hardy who was just The Crow without the makeup. The Crow gave us the action style that was expanded by Blade and the Matrix, which led to Devil May Cry and Max Payne. Even though The Crow is loved by many people, I think it’s cultural impact is still a little underappreciated, so I’m hoping that this video will both educate a new generation, and spark conversation again about what the Crow did for entertainment. And by extension, I want to celebrate what an awesome and forward thinking star Brandon Lee was. From his interviews, you could tell that he just got the culture at that time, and played Eric Draven in a way that no one else could. I’m sure I will get people who agree, and disagree with this stance. Either way, thanks as always for watching.

The Best of 80s Cool - Mullets, Muscles, Motorcycles and Machine Guns
มุมมอง 162K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
During the 1980s, one style arose that eclipsed all others. Macho men with mullets, muscles, motorcycles, and machine guns. Hot explosions, hotter babes, and crazy car stunts. And action heroes who had the need for speed and ain't had time to bleed. You know what time it is folks. It's time for the best of 80s cool! This one took awhile to make, but I wanted to make sure I got it right. I want ...
What the Hell Happened to our Culture after the 2000s?
มุมมอง 178K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Have you ever felt like the our culture came to a near standstill in the past 10-15 years? Well, you're not alone. For me, the year our cultural stagnation started is around 2008. Now, I'm not saying things haven't changed at all. I'm saying that, technology aside, things have severely slowed down since then. I anticipate that this topic will be quite divisive, and some people will feel like th...
Why Goku is Better than Vegeta - The Wisdom of Akira Toriyama
มุมมอง 10K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
When it comes to fandoms, my first true love was and will always be Dragon Ball. It's the first thing that I chose to become a diehard fan of. Since the early 2000s, I've stuck pretty closely to the Dragon Ball community. It means a lot to me, and had a major impact on where I am in life today. For that reason, the passing of the series creator, Akira Toriyama, was hard to take. Now my two favo...
The "Gritty Realism" Style that Defined Post-9/11 Movies
มุมมอง 14K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey there friendo. This time I'm taking a break from 90s cool, and diving into the 2000s cool... or rather, since so many people were confused about the "90s" part of 90s cool, I am calling this one "Nolan Cool". The tl;dr version of Nolan Cool is: Nolan Cool - The explosion of "gritty and realistic" movies, TV shows, and games, in the 2000s/early 2010s, that resulted from the public's reaction...
The Best of 90s Cool in Video Games - Your Mom Hates These Games
มุมมอง 11K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Here they are guys, the very best of 90s cool in video games. Your mom hates these games… Actually, many people who loved these games are probably moms and dads now. It was fun to dive back into the world of dark, mysterious characters with trench coats, combat boots, leather, and sunglasses. All with a healthy dose of techno and sword fighting. My definition of 90s cool is pretty fluent. Initi...

Here’s some more 90s cool for you to ring in the new year! I wanted to finish this video before the end of 2023, but as you might expect, playing and researching a ton of games takes a lot of work. Much more than just watching a movie. But here you have it, the first part of my best of 90s cool video games. I'm excited to get to this topic because there are so, so many 90s cool video games. The WORST of 90s Cool. The Movies Best Left Forgotten

I was blown away by the support for my last video. Seriously, never expected that. Glad to see there are tons of other fans of "90s cool" out there! This video took a lot of work and I wanted to get it done in short order. I'm happy with the final outcome, even though I'm sure many people will be unhappy... or even quite angry... with my choices. But that's what makes it fun right! My first goa...
The Best of 90s Cool - The Genre that Time Forgot
มุมมอง 250K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
This video for me was a lifetime in the making. When I watched the “Blade” review by Redlettermedia, when Jay mentioned “90s cool” I had a lightbulb moment. There were so many of these movies that I grew up loving, that as Jay described it were all about “leather, sunglasses and techno”. Digging deeper, I realized that while these films had so many unifying features, there was no genre to unify...

I think part of it is information fatigue with the internet plastering every little thing in your face. Managing all these different apps, websites, news, messages, subscriptions almost feels like a second job these days. I think some people secretly want culture to slow down so they can have time to catch up. Most you had to worry about back in the day was going to work/school and then watching TV

After half hour watching this and being mildly entertained, I feel massively let down that you didn't include the movie (with a now all-star cast) that best portrayed everyone that grew up in the 80s biggest fears, the cold war getting hot. How Red Dawn didn't make your top five is mind boggling

Do you know what's ironic? Matt Reeves' ''The Batman'' with Robert Pattinson looks more like a The Crow movie, in terms of visuals & atmosphere that the 2024 The Crow with Bill Skarsgard. Just watch the first scene of "The Batman", where they show Bruce Wayne is walking through the streets of Gotham during the Halloween festivities and then the gang, attacking that guy on the train and finally Batman showing up for the first time. It's pretty obvious that Matt Reeves was going for a similar ''feel'' with the original The Crow movie. And now compare this to any scene of that crappy The Crow reboot/remake or whatever they call it.

Imagine an AI that can produce anything you want for your visual pleasure similar to how Pandora works connecting several hundred or several thousand aspects of the things you like and the things you listen to. Now let's say you ask this AI to make you an ultra edgy alternative rock/ goth/ metal soundtrack for your edgy dark antihero film enter a few prompts whether it be vampire or tragic hero or a supreme act of vengeance and you end up with a program can possibly reproduce this very late 90s 2000s ish dark action movie. Similar to how Pandora would produce your playlist you could enter movies that you would like to influence your viewing experience for example Spawn plus underworld plus matrix and end up with a totally unique viewing experience. I'm not saying I support this I'm saying I see this as on inevitable trend.

STOP SCAPEGOATING TECHNOLOGY! The technology, the niche interests, the escapism, etc. are just an emancipation method that the pop culture has failed to deliver to us. Had the pop culture succeeded, it would have sufficed the 9/11 attack, the 2008's socioeconomic crisis, the COVID crisis and so many crises inbetween. If technology has one "flaw", it is that the majority of the society has stagnated; they still scapegoat, commit logical fallacies (especially Fundamental Attribution Error), enable bullying, pity narcissists, hate what is different, etc.. But that's not the technology's fault, unless we DO want to become pawns of the AI and make a Matrix for ourselves. I'd rather that the society wakes up to its own stupidity instead of scapegoating everything and starts blaming itself. But why should I wait when I can just download all the things I know and love that remind me of better days and make derivative works somewhere in some niche place where there's no SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, CISPA, PRISM, TPP, Article 11, Article 13, Article 17, DMCA, etc.? This is the reason we have each our own comfort zone. Why nag the stupid inert status quo society that won't take responsibility for the consequences of its mob mentality? They could collect all of the stars of the sky and it won't change who they are. To hell with them! No wonder why they scapegoat things like utilitiarianism, consequentialism, macchiavelism, common sense, divergent thinking, neurodiversity, "who started it" mindset, hedonism, self-indulgence and other things we all deeply know and love (including the "we" word usage in attempt to reconsolidate likeminded people). It is clear that only technology allows for every one of us to create each our own world and connect with likeminded people and go to each our own place where we can survive and thrive without friction. If we need culture to patch us up together, then we just suck as a humanity. It appears that culture is then a bigger problem than technology, but I don't wanna scapegoat the culture either. The culture as a monolith has provided all that it could. Now it's up to the individuals to have each their own contemplation and consolidation and meet likeminded people and think more abstract and feel the surroundings that they couldn't due to all the bullying and the noise caused both by this flatbrain design social media psychosis and the offline bullying. Time to go decentralized and everyone each their own way to each their own. No other way is viable.

Coming out of the cinema after the showing I noticed a huge cardboard stand to advertise another film as I walked through the lobby, with a weird skeleton like figure waking down a weird plant … it was ‘The nightmare before Christmas’. Maybe its just me but ive grown to really dislike Nolans impact on Comic book Filmmaking,at least when it comes to DCs heroes because its led to such a massive isolation of Batman from the rest of the DC Universe hes supposed to be apart of including his own Batfamily. Batman in Cinema outside of the Snyderverse hasnt gone up against anything actually SUPERHUMAN or Supernatural. Plus Nolan's refusal to let batman be apart of the anything but his movies in terms of Live action, and then his refusal to help out on any other Superhero stuff except as a producer is really heartbreaking
