The Best of 90s Cool in Video Games - Part 1

  • Here’s some more 90s cool for you to ring in the new year! I wanted to finish this video before the end of 2023, but as you might expect, playing and researching a ton of games takes a lot of work. Much more than just watching a movie. But here you have it, the first part of my best of 90s cool video games. I'm excited to get to this topic because there are so, so many 90s cool video games. The leather, sunglasses, all-black outfits, dual-wielding guns, and sword fights were all over 90s and 2000s games.
    Keep in mind, I’m one guy trying to cover a new topic that spans the entirety of gaming history. That means I’m bound to forget a game or two. So if I forget about one of your favorites, my sincerest apologies (or maybe it will be in the next part...). If you disagree with a placement, well, that’s just a matter of opinion. And you know what they say about opinions…
    I could not have finished this list without the help of a number of online resources. First, I want to thank Retro-Sanctuary. Their top 100 lists helped remind me of a lot of games. Second, I don’t have the time or even the hardware to record footage for all of these games. I could not make these videos without the help of various longplay channels on TH-cam. Please check out and show your support to:
    ‪@RetroSanctuary‬ ‪@worldoflongplays‬ ‪@longplayarchive‬ ‪@64bitwrestling‬ @gamingb-roll3995
    And with that out of the way, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I can’t wait to see what 2024 brings for this channel. And with the pleasantries out of the way, time for those pesky tags:
    GTA2 (1999), Apocalypse (1998), X-Men Legends (2004), Bloodrayne (2002), Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (2005), Deep Fear (1998), Blackthorne (1994), Parasite Eve (1998), Fear Effect (2000), Serious Sam: The First Encounter (2001), Ghost in the Shell (1997), Fur Fighters (2000), Comix Zone (1995), Gex 3 (1999), Gungrave: Overdose (2004), Dino Crisis (1999), Headhunter (2001), Max Payne (2001), Killer 7 (2005), Time Crisis (1995), Shadowrun (1994), Omikron the Nomad Soul (1999), Oni (2001), Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy (2004),

    Does anybody else remember the military spy fiction around the same time? It's style was categorised by unwieldy, strange guns, matte black military gear and fluorescent green lighting.

    I'm going to throw in a suggestion that I'll admit, won't be on the top 25, but I consider a bit of an overlooked gem - Noctropolis.
    It's a graphic adventure, so there's very little "fighting" (though there is some), but you play a superhero in a gritty noir world, manipulating the power of darkness. It wears the 90's cool badge with pride. It mixes comic book cutscenes with short live-action clips (of admittedly variable acting quality) for a really unique experience.
    Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and I'd never claim it was "good", but 90s me enjoyed it.

    • @LifeofSlicey1
      @LifeofSlicey1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're right, it won't be in the top 25. That's a kickass suggestion nonetheless. I've never even heard of it before. I'm so glad when people suggest 90s cool stuff that I never heard of. It really expands the scope of this genre.

    It is pretty interesting how with the games, you can see a load of the kinda nerdy cool stuff from the 80's (particularly the cyberpunk stuff, the environmental extremist ff7 stuff) start to lead ahead of the movies in the cool department

    • @LifeofSlicey1
      @LifeofSlicey1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Great point. And then you have anime being like a decade ahead of the curb. Akira is doing most of this stuff in 1988.

    • @j377yb33n
      @j377yb33n 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@LifeofSlicey1 Akira, neuromancer and mona lisa overdrive kicking off some of the gritty Japanese/corpo cyberpunk stuff. House and acid music coming into its own from warehouse parties. Like John Wu's jumped from soap operas to gritty action in the 80's.
      Styles that would take the feeling of blade runner or the heavy metal comics and twist them in a new direction. the undercurrent of a massive style often starts bubbling up a while before, popping out with small projects before really going big.

    Really enjoying this video series and can't wait to see the next part. Though to be honest, i think it would have been better if you stopped at 2006, since Shadow The Hedgehog came out that year.

    • @LifeofSlicey1
      @LifeofSlicey1  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Maybe I'll go a little further for the "worst of" video, since bad stuff tended to come out later. It's funny you mention Shadow the Hedgehog. I originally had a cutscene from the game in the video, but cut it after I realized it came out in 2006 haha

      Right. I also misremembered why I cut it. It wasn't the date. I cut it because I forgot how poorly received it was. I originally had Shadow riding his motorcycle in the opening montage. Oh well, it will be a good one for the "worst of" video!

    I know it's above the cutaway line, but The Darkness (2007) is like a beautiful grungy swan song of 90's cool. It's got everything. Demon possession, nu-metal, dual-wielding, leather trench coats, grimdark atmosphere, charismatic mobsters and Mike freakin Patton voicing the villain.

    90s coo needs womanly sex appeal but not just any normal style of sex appeal. Lara croft, Tifa and Orchid are 3 perfect examples. Lara the confident in charge sexy badasss, Tifa the feminin girl next door who can kick ass and take numbers while still complementing the masculine lead and Black Orchid, who oozes sensuality will fighting. No anger or bitterness needed here. No butch or masculine women like today's games.

    Just an idea here but 90s cool products? Dude there's so many stupid crazes from the 90s. I think you could easily do a video with that.

    • @LifeofSlicey1
      @LifeofSlicey1  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That could be fun. I think most products, especially aimed at kids, were more "90s weird" than "90s cool" though. Everything was trying to outdo itself in the weirdness factor.

    why don't you cut it in 2008? was when cod and gears of war exploded in popularity and the "realitic brown military game" genre start and then every game try to be military "realistic" and well "brown"

    Am I not understanding this list? Is it top games that happen to be 90s cool? Because Max Payne was ludicrously 90s cool. It was basically a cyberpunk setting away from checking all the boxes.

      "Is it top games that happen to be 90s cool"
      Yes - you've got it. Max Payne is a great example. Came out in 2001 but is based on the 90s version of cool.

      I've never played either, but it looks like they're both very poorly reviewed. Maybe they will appear on the "worst of" list once I've taken a look at them.

    I bought a Mac in 1993 so 90’s gaming for me was mostly Marathon and… umm… Marathon 2. Until Unreal and Deus Ex came out, anyway. I actually knew Ryan Martell, one of the early Bungie programmers that cowrote Marathon. He taught me stuff about programming that honestly helped me get into Silicon Valley and start my career. Ryan, meanwhile, bought a boat with his Marathon money and started sailing around the world.

      @@LifeofSlicey1 I just got profoundly lucky. Ryan had left college to join Jason Jones at Bungie and do Marathon. After that shipped he came back to college to finish his degree and that’s when I met him. He taught me on the Mac how to drop into the debugger and step through assembly code, and thus how the C code I was writing translated to what the machine was running. He showed me tricks in the Marathon code and how it complied to extremely efficient assembly. It was a master class taught in fast-forward; much of it went over my head, but what stuck was a revelation.
      The next summer I skipped out to Silicon Valley and I think Ryan went back to Bungie for Marathon 2. Funny thing, at the company I went to their debugging system was extremely primitive-you had to drop into the Mac debugger and debug in assembly! They were amazed that I could do that. (Thanks, Ryan!) That skill gave me a HUGE boost and helped turn that summer job into a full-time job.
      It’s been really fun finding your channel and revisiting those memories. After your movie review I rewatched some movies I hadn’t seen in decades and also some I simply never saw before, like Blade. I know it’s hard to believe, but I’d never seen Blade! So, so cool.
