Whole Lot More Living To Do [MUSIC VIDEO]
Hey boss, I watched your video on mixing, and this is awesome!
Nice video!
Great job. I also record guitar, bass, and mandolin then seperately overdub banjo and fiddle remotely. If you are recording in a small, reasonably "dead" room, I find it helpful to set up the instrument positions spaced as if there were a whole ensemble recording together live along with a stationary XY room mic recording each part also. Once all the individual room mic tracks are mixed you can apply any reverb, "room" IR/or plugin you like (I'm partial to FAME these days) EQ and (usually pretty agressively) compress. Even though this mic usually comprises 15-20% of the mix it really helps create the illusion that everybody recorded live in the same room. I've tried it for vocals also with mixed results.
yesirr
I don’t understand why you are using two mics for a single instrument….
Because like some parts of the instruments make different sounds you want to pick up better. For instance on the double bass, you want to pick up the slap if he does slap on the neck, and then the more tone oriented boom at the bottom. With fiddle sometimes you want two mics, one for the g string side, and one for the E string side to pick up all of the range perfectly.
question, how important is it to have a matching pair of mics? I have one km184 but im not sure i want to spend for another one if i can get by with a cheaper alternative like the audio technica.
I would like to know as well. I’m still not sure what purpose having two mics on a single instrument is actually
Using two mics allows you to record in stereo and as well allows you to capture two different perspectives on a sound source. A matched pair creates a balanced stereo image where as using different mics will capture the image differently. Both techniques are widely used for different purposes.
So true that there's a great absence of bluegrass production techniques on YT! Glad to see y'all doing it. Love the sound y'all!
Awesome videos guys!!
I cannot tell you all how helpful that a comprehensive bluegrass-focused tutorial for people interested in recording, mixing, and mastering at home is! Thank y'all!
Great track!
You guys still jamming....🥀
tbh, the practice of launching an album as a young musician in the south is premature to say the least. For God's sake wait till your picking and singing has matured a little before you put yourself "out there." All you're doing otherwise is recording things you'll despise in a couple of years when you leap beyond how you played on the album.
It's been four years, and I think it holds up well. We were 19-20 at the time, and wanted a way to release music. This music is web released only. We have both had offers with pro bands and have won nation-wide recognition awards. It's kinda silly to criticize someone's creative outlet, especially when it's miles beyond what most people would consider adequate and goes near professional quality. Even if it were bad by bluegrass standards (which again, it's way above average instrumental wise at least), its still kinda scummy to criticize someone's musical outlet or journey. There's no right way to do things, there's no key to being discovered, we're all just people trying to create and learn and do something we're passionate about.
What are you Mastering with? Sounds good guys! :)
check their channel, there are videos about recording and mixing process

I've seen several other more limited guides about how you all mix your music, but boy have I been waiting for this video. Thank you!!
me too!
Great video 👏👏👏
Nice sound :D
I love it! The whole thing!
I am so excited, gonna listen now. I like your music guys
Great stuff Jeremiah! Great to hear some great new bluegrass songs. Would love to hear more things you've written!
I think it'd be cool to record with you sometime. I'm from West Virginia, and play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, and bass. My favorite three are fiddle, banjo, and guitar though, and my main is the fiddle. I recorded this Clinch Mountain Backstep using Presonus Studio One 3 Artist, and used similar mic placement as your video shows. My mics are Cobalt CO7s. I'm about to start college next week (August 17th). If you want some fiddle tracks (or banjo) on a song sometime, I'd love to give it a whirl. The links below are for a Clinch Mountain Backstep, and the other is a small clip of Big Spike Hammer I was using to practice my timing. The Big Spike Hammer is a bit slow (more like a lot haha), but I was more concerned with getting a good quality timing in the recording than speed. My teacher always told me to pick quality over quantity. Also in the links is a Tell Me True. I didn't know anything about mic placement when I recorded it, nor about using a click track. Thanks. www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/media-player/audio_player2.asp?musicid=42845&archived= www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/media-player/audio_player2.asp?musicid=42761&archived= www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/media-player/audio_player2.asp?musicid=42756&archived=

This was a nice random find
This is awesome!!

I would like to record with you
This was so helpful! Thank you
Great sound, good job guys
Hey if you guys haven't ever worked with anyone at Sweetwater for your gear needs, email me @ jordan_garrett@sweetwater.com . I'm A Bluegrass Picker and I'd be happy to see if we can take better care of you than Amazon and Best Buy. If not thats just fine. You guys sound great. Look forward to more videos! Take care!
Also there's some verb-age and details you guys should describe a little bit more clearly, but in general you guys are on the right track. You obviously know from experience and from learning from your mentors. For example, explain why you use a small diaphragm condenser and why those vs dynamic, large diaphragm etc.
Dynamite! Awesome job y'all!!
This song was written by me and my wife. I’m Chris Walls and my wife is Karen. The song credits were on Frank’s CD as well as Mark Newton who also recorded our song. Registering your recording and paying the appropriate royalties would be appreciated. We’re BMI members.
Hey thanks for commenting! We are not selling or making any money off of the recording, only recording the song as fans.
The Tugboats Thanks for responding. Karen and I are glad you dig our song (and of course Frank & DK’s version). All the best. C&K Walls.
Hello guys, thank you for putting so much efford into this video, it helped me a lot. Would you be willing to share the multitrack? ;)
Killer guys!
Love it!
Very nice guys!
Great stuff! Am I correct in thinking you record in a home studio?
Yes we have a home studio - Jeremiah
