I cannot tell you all how helpful that a comprehensive bluegrass-focused tutorial for people interested in recording, mixing, and mastering at home is! Thank y'all!

So true that there's a great absence of bluegrass production techniques on YT! Glad to see y'all doing it. Love the sound y'all!

Great job. I also record guitar, bass, and mandolin then seperately overdub banjo and fiddle remotely. If you are recording in a small, reasonably "dead" room, I find it helpful to set up the instrument positions spaced as if there were a whole ensemble recording together live along with a stationary XY room mic recording each part also. Once all the individual room mic tracks are mixed you can apply any reverb, "room" IR/or plugin you like (I'm partial to FAME these days) EQ and (usually pretty agressively) compress. Even though this mic usually comprises 15-20% of the mix it really helps create the illusion that everybody recorded live in the same room. I've tried it for vocals also with mixed results.

I think it'd be cool to record with you sometime. I'm from West Virginia, and play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, and bass. My favorite three are fiddle, banjo, and guitar though, and my main is the fiddle. I recorded this Clinch Mountain Backstep using Presonus Studio One 3 Artist, and used similar mic placement as your video shows. My mics are Cobalt CO7s. I'm about to start college next week (August 17th). If you want some fiddle tracks (or banjo) on a song sometime, I'd love to give it a whirl. The links below are for a Clinch Mountain Backstep, and the other is a small clip of Big Spike Hammer I was using to practice my timing. The Big Spike Hammer is a bit slow (more like a lot haha), but I was more concerned with getting a good quality timing in the recording than speed. My teacher always told me to pick quality over quantity. Also in the links is a Tell Me True. I didn't know anything about mic placement when I recorded it, nor about using a click track. Thanks.

I don’t understand why you are using two mics for a single instrument….

question, how important is it to have a matching pair of mics? I have one km184 but im not sure i want to spend for another one if i can get by with a cheaper alternative like the audio technica.

I would like to know as well. I’m still not sure what purpose having two mics on a single instrument is actually

Using two mics allows you to record in stereo and as well allows you to capture two different perspectives on a sound source. A matched pair creates a balanced stereo image where as using different mics will capture the image differently. Both techniques are widely used for different purposes.
