Making a new holder for my pliers
มุมมอง 52914 วันที่ผ่านมา
Hey guys, I picked up some new pliers in a set from ALDI, bargain at only £6 and with what they are they’ll do exactly what their meant to but they didn’t fit on my old rack. I’ve had that rack for like 6 years, it was amongst some of the very first things I made, but since all the new ones don’t fit I thought I’d make a new one. I was just gonna make it but thought I’d bring yous along on this...

Making more upgrades to the mini lathe
มุมมอง 2.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Hey guys so I’ve wanted to do this since I rebuilt the cross slide, replacing the lead screw with a trapezoidal lead screw makes the most sense, this particular lead screw wasn’t my first choice as the thread pitch is what you would call coarse, and having done it I can positively say it’s not bad but having a much finer one would be the way to go, but they ones are expensive where as this one ...
How I made a BOX/FINGER joint sled
มุมมอง 1.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Hey guys so I need to make some boxes for a few new tools I want to protect from dust etc, so thought I join them using finger ( I call them finger you might call them box “ semantics “ ) joints so only thought it was right to make a jig / Sled to quickly cut them on, any other time I’ve done these joints I’ve done it the more hard and transitional way, by hand. But it be pretty useful to have ...

Very nice and helpful video.
Nice project you did a great job.
Love it. The details are brilliant
Cracking job, Darren, looking forward to more. Thanks
What a great idea mate, it looks awesome 👍🏼
13:27 I don’t know if it would have helped with such a small piece but NYCCNC has a video where they use super glue and painters tape to hold thin parts in a mill. th-cam.com/video/r6DCvtcU8_M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ExYffbFeooxuTJFr
Hi Darren. This is a nice make keep going I like your work 😊😊😊 From Brian w.germany
I love it
Great job Darren, looks very nice
This is such a fun addition to your workshop, I enjoyed watching immensly. Such good detail you should be proud each time you check to see if it's tea time yet 😊
That's brilliant Darren, you've nailed it pal
For 20 pounds it's a great deal... The chinesium sets are accurate and a lot cheaper than name brand.
Decent steel for the price....... could probably harden it some more if really needed....
Great to save vintage chisels, but perhaps you were a bit too aggressive?
are you from Bathgate?
Brilliant idea, Daren. I've got a rack with screwdrivers, chisels, and all sorts, nightmare at times. At least this lets you keep all the pliers in one place. Great project from scrap pieces 👏 👍🏻
Good to see you back and well
Oh man, I saw the long format video and it was epic! I learned a lot from that video. You are a true “renaissance man” as they say
That's a really nice result. Using more value in brass than the chisels cost is quite funny, though. I use cheap chisels at work, spend time sharpening them, then some git pulls one out of your toolbag and starts attacking plasterboard with it.
This was a fun video. As you said at the start, my biggest concern was the quality of the steel. It looked like you could cut it pretty easily with a file which shouldn’t be possible with good quality hardened steel (as far as I understand). You mentioned you thought it was 20-30 rc which was surprising to me, is that Rockwell or some other unit? Good chisels are usually 58+ Rockwell from what I undertand. But when you used it, it seemed to hold an edge for at least a little while, so it must not have been that soft (or I really don’t understand the Rockwell scale). I think it was James Wright who did a really extensive chisel test and tested some Aldi brand chisels that actually performed pretty well, I’m not sure if it was these ones. But maybe the steel isn’t quite as bad as we would expect? You mentioned case hardening but I was wondering if you might try to retemper it and make them a bit harder. I dunno if that would cause other problems though, like making them more brittle and prone to chipping? Anyway, that would be neat to see if you try it someday.
You have been watching a true professional woodworker. Great job.
Stumbled upon this video by chance. Enjoyed it so much I ended up subbing to your channel. Cheers man.
I have a 5 piece set of Aldi chisels, but they have wood handles out of the box. I sharpened them similar to how you did and they’re fine. I wrap the full length of the blades with cardboard and put tape around that and to close off the end to make sleeves to prevent the blades from getting banged around and dull.
Wood on a metal lathe?
Yeah? 👍
@@Darren_Barclay I think its cool, infact I was thinking of trying that but then again I still want to use it mainly as a metal lathe,I just wonder if it would cause issues with clean up?
@@mrlikwid100 na I wouldn’t worry or overthink it, it’s a tool use it as you see fit, don’t allow tool purist to spoil your fun use it with wood same as metal, I’ve made a tool rest so you can use chisels, it just sit a bit of steel in the old 4 way tool post, after each use just vacuum everything up and wipe it down with some oil, if you’ve got a compressor blow some air in to the chuck and you’ll be golden, if you can spare it just keep a separate chuck for turning wood, I do plan on getting a cheap one just for that.
I've just bought those Aldi chisels they seem good value. Those handles you made look awesome!
might have to pick some up myself
Real nice work , i like it!
Nice job Darren, more work less chat 😂
Its spot on !! Nowt wrong with it
First you criticize yourself for mistakes on the box. Then you criticize yourself for being too critical. You really are your own worst critic. Seriously though, it's a beautiful build. Much respect for using the hand tools so well.
The box is perfect for its intended use mate. I’m always envious of how sharp your hand tools are Darren, particularly your planes. I find sharpening daunting and a chore so I don’t do it ( but I know I should)
Hey victor, when I first started woodworking, I was solely using hand tools, I never had power tools and sharpening was one skill I practiced a lot, but when it comes down to it you could just using a honing guide to get the same results. Happy sharpening.
Great box Darren, really enjoyed the video mate. Love the fact you made the hardware as well.
Hi Darren. Do not let your wife see this it is a big box and she can get a lot in it ???
I hear you, but she see this comment and get the idea from you LMAO, but In all honesty if she wanted one I’d just make her one.
I need a much bigger box than that for my towels and bed sheets 😊
Nice job man
The box came out really nice mate don’t knock your work.
Don't knock yourself Darren the box looks brilliant plus we're not all perfect, looking forward to more videos.
Nice work 👍. 1 micron=0,001 mm not 0, 01 mm 😉
I salute you sir. the ancient Egyptians could not have done better.
Hi Darren nice upgrad you need to make a power feed for your mill and lathe from Brian w.germany
The problem was turning the stone sideways. You were removing material from the center but not the overhang on up and down strokes. That is why 2 had a concave center. There are specific patterns used when there is overhang and you also don't want to push down on the side, adding extra pressure and less in the center.
That is a great idea, it gives you the ability to get the best camera shot making the setup quick and easy.
Yeah it’s worked great and keeps the floor free with no tripod in the way lol
Darren, once you finish the boxes, you might try to get some VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) paper to prevent rust on those tools. As long as you don't have air blowing over it, VCI paper maintains its effectiveness for quite a long time. If your vernier height gauge is made of SS, it may or may not rust and you probably don't want a lot of oil on it either. If you find some affordable VCI paper, put it at least in the bottom of the boxes, better yet, wrap the items in it with the chemical side facing the items. And, *always* wash your hands after handling VCI paper so you don't get it into your eyes or mouth!
Thanks bob ill look in to that am just about to start them as well, appreciate it.
Hi Darren, could list the ACME thread size and what those brass fittings are please 🙂

@@Darren_Barclay Thanks Darren, I found equivalents on Amazon so for me I get free delivery as well. More news on this in due course :-)
i have been looking into backlash lead screws. they usually have a stiff spring so it keeps them locked and it does a pretty good job. wha's the reason for not using a spring?
Yeah it could have been used but the way I set it up does exactly that, the 2 piece are perfectly spaced apart to take up that little bit of wiggle, and just the way I made that block that goes under the cross slide there was simple no room.
Great video, I have the metal on the shelf, thanks for the prompt 😊
