Hi, I am Jay Hassler. I have played the clarinet professionally in NYC for 30 years. Performances range from Carnegie Hall to the White House. I am also an experienced educator. In addition to my full-time job at the oldest independent school in New York City, I have taught hundreds of people to play the clarinet in private lessons. I created the Clarinet Ninja Dojo for adults who want to learn, relearn, or send their playing to brand-new heights. Check out ClarinetNinja.com for my free material as well as how to join the Dojo.
Clarinet - the perfect right hand position. PDF of a warm up that will change your clarinet playing
Playing the clarinet to the best of your ability requires paying attention to your hand position in your warm up so that you can forget about it when you play in performance. This exercise will get you where you want/need to be!

The clarinetist is tops! But the commentary is not. Let the music speak for itself!
@@silva777 thanks!
It's my goal to learn this (this song inspired my first research paper, and it was on George Gershwin), but the glissando always eluded me. This was a super helpful explanation, thank you. I'm still working on dropping the pitch lower on my mouthpiece, but my head is pounding and the cat is pissed lol.
If the cat is pissed you must be doing it right!
While I haven't played the Bb clarinet reeds yet, I've tested the tenor sax version (effectively also the bass clarinet version) and found it very similar to the Vandoren Blue Box/D'Addario Reserve reeds in terms of sound & strength. Not sure if this is true with the Bb clarinet reeds either? -Josh Woods whom you met at Clarinetest 2024
Thank you, thank you! I am by no means a pro player (more like coulda, woulda, shoulda) but still play as much as I can. I NEED a new barrel so I can accurately tune with the musicians at my church. How fast can I get one?? I liked the Delvin Behn Bores, and the rubber with rubber ring.
I am so glad I made something that found you at the right time! Brad's barrels are really game changing. In terms of how fast you can get one...head over to Brads site www.clarinetmouthpiece.com/product-page/evo-clarinet-adjustable-barrel and see whats going on :) I don't know what his inventory looks like at any point, but I would imagine that he has stuff ready to go.
Thanks for taking the time to do this well (better audio equipment could help) Double lip embouchure may or may not be a requirement for a good sound. I heard Elsa Verdehr perform at the Clarinetfest (Clarinet Clinic it was called then) In Denver about 1976. She is a master at double lip playing and has the widest dynamic range I've ever witnessed and a very expressive sound balanced with flawless technique. In front of about 250 clarinetists she demonstrated both single and double embouchure in a rather extended solo passage. The few listeners who chose correctly when asked admitted they guessed and it was not evident in the playing. It probably comes down to doing either one correctly. Years later I played in an orchestra in the New York area with Dennis Dougherty (A former student of Kieth Stein [Chicago Symphony Double Lip player]). Mr Dougherty told me that Stein switched him to double lip because of the muscular fatigue he experience in his arms and hands from playing single, even though it was not a "biting issue". He also told me that in large ensembles playing loudly he can not hear his own playing using double lip so he switches to single lip and listens to his own intonation through the bones in his upper teeth! I think Mr. Dougherty has a great expressive sound but it may be as much the big bore instruments he plays on as it is with his embouchure. Listen here when you get a chance: th-cam.com/video/-1OOMcixT7A/w-d-xo.html
A teacher of mine who was a student of Bonade showed me something related to this subject that Bonade taught. Practice very slowly while opening the fingers very wide and then work on accurately finding the keys from long distance. This is just for practice, not for actually playing this way. If you can find the holes accurately in this way, you are in good shape. Also, helps to relax the fingers. I think your exercize here would be a good preliminary to this Bonade exercise.
To have an idea characterized even tangentially related to Bonade makes my day. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :)
After watching this video, I got my clarinet out and tried the lesson. Awesome exercise! Thanks!!
I am glad that you found in inspiring:)
My big right hand issue is I hit the sliver key whenever I play Eb. Just enough to open it slightly but that’s all it takes to mess me up. His looks like it might help train my fingers to stay in the right place.
I hope it helps you with that. Let me know how it goes please :)
I have a question you may be able to answer. When I look at content on TH-cam they class content as beginner, very easy. What do people class a person who has played clarinet for around 3 months. Most content is over the break and difficult articulation. When will I reach a beginner?
You ask a good question. It's important to take things that are offered to us but also recognize that sometimes they need to be transformed in some way to be right for our ability level. This can be a difficult thing to do in the early stages . TH-cam content is a challenge because it is geared towards a general audience. The creator can't be aware and tailor it to everyone's unique needs. Do you have anyone helping you learn? If you haven't checked it out already, I have a free beginner/refresher course that may be helpful to you. ClarinetNinja.com
@@clarinetninja Thanks for your response. I am starting to have some lessons next week. Just had a browse through your refresher course. I will be visiting again. The articulation and the fingering ones especially. Thanks again.
I was thinking earlier I need something like this. I get death grip on my right hand and it locks up.I also have a hard time connecting my fingering to my brain. A lot of people on TH-cam show beginners C D E F and G and that’s all you get as a beginner. I know it’s free and we mustn’t grumble but I am sure there would be an audience. There probably are a lot on TH-cam but get drowned out the mere mortals.
TH-cam is a challenging place to share ideas as one can never make something that hits for every viewer. I certainly try to create content that has a wide appeal, but it can be difficult to do.
Great lesson, thank you 😊
thank you Gwen!
FYI...Calendly appointment link on website not working. Kudos on lesson 😎
Thanks for letting me know! I will fix that asap:)
got it fixed...not a lot of times on it. Email me at TheClarinetNinja@gmail.com if you want to get together :)
im really loving these scales and they play really well, however i play bass and contra most of the time, would you ever make a version of this music that includes low C, C#, D, and D#? im trying to work on my lower range and this could really help
I could make a version of that! That's a great idea. If you would, email me so that you can be the first to have it :) Theclarinetninja@gmail.com Glad to hear that you like the scales!
In terms of resistance, not sound.. Do you think there is a difference between them in resistance level? If so, which one do you think is the most resistant and which one is the most free blowing? Or, which is the order from the most resistant to the less resistant(free blowing)? thanks
It’s been a long time since I made the video:) I am confident that the difference in resistance would be made up for in reed choice and adjustment. At the same time, the silver and gold had the most resistance but not by a lot.
This was my EXACT question!!! Thank you!!! I am playing on a Yamaha 250 but with a B•45 Vandoren mouthpiece. I want something to level up my sound without jumping into the $5000 range.
Thank you for telling me! I love it when I have made something that is helpful. Melanie is my most trusted technician friend and knows what she is talking about. I am lucky to have friends like her. (shameless self-promotion to follow) If you haven't checked out clarinetninja.com head over there, get on my mailing list, and check out what the Clarinet Ninja Dojo has to offer.. The best way to level up your sound, while a great clarinet will help, is the experienced player and teacher who can lead you where you want to go. If there is anything I can do to help you with your clarinet purchase let me know!
There's almost nothing I love more than firsthand accounts of student experiences with the great clarinet teachers of the tradition. They're like mysterious, long-lost Jedi Masters.
Talking to Ron is like talking to a very kind history book on the clarinet
Maravilhoso
All the cane reeds sounded great to me. At that point I’d pick the best feeling style for my mouthpiece. At the moment I’m playing Reserve Evolution happily but have had success with Rue Lepic 56 as well. Legere Signature was my preference for sound of the synth reeds, but none of them really seemed “good enough” for a concert situation.
So i need a LOT of help.I am trying to play a song in my music book i think it was called Pentascale but i know the notes but for some reason when i play different notes,it just keeps on making the same sound. What do i do???
I don't have enough information from what you have said to give you specific advice. However, I can tell you that there is a hole open (you are pressing a key you don't mean to OR are not totally covering a hole you think you are) that is making all the notes sound the same. Which hole is the problem? That's the specific part I don't have enough information to say
@ ohhh ok

I am not confident that I know the answer to this. I am sure if you ask Brad through his website he will respond. Wish I knew more:)
The PDF isn’t working is there anybody that is willing to give me another link to it? I would really appreciate it!! 💛
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. The website has changed and I didn’t think about that! Will you email me theclarinetninja@gmail and I will find it and send it to you (and change the link)
What do you actually want to say? 😉
Sir, I am sorry to bother you again. I was a super-amateur-level player but haven't played in the past ten years. Last week, when I finally decided to play it, I discovered the mouthpiece was broken. Is there any suggestion for people like me in terms of which mouthpiece may work the best? I used to use a Vandoren CL6 mouthpiece with Vandoren 3.5 reeds. Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help.
I am not familiar with that particular mouthpiece. It strikes me that you are using a relatively resistant reed given the circumstances you describe in your clarinet journey. I would check out Brad Behns overature mouthpiece www.clarinetmouthpiece.com/overture-student-clarinetmouthpiece that's a low cost excellent mouthpiece. If you want to go a little more expensive I would try a vandoren 5RV lyre amzn.to/3BS0Z0U
It would be interesting to compare using this kind of barrel to having a longer upper joint and shorter barrel like on the Yamaha CSG or similar are the Louis Rossi clarinets but they are in one piece plus barrel and bell but the barrel is also shorter.
That would be interesting. I cant say with certainty, but I don't think the bore is designed to go with those dimensions....even more importantly I would not be able to run that experiment because I don't have those clarinets (beautiful clarinets) available to me. I wish I did ;)
@@clarinetninja Yes both the longer upper joint and these Behn barrels are designed to have longer gap between the barrel and the throat tones to make them more in tune when you need to pull out.
Can you make on for paperclip contra?
I don’t have an answer, but I would email blayman directly. That would be cool to have
this is really helpful, thank you so much!
I am glad it was useful! :)
What is meant by 'so.long as the tuning is still good' with reference to buying a secondhand professional instrument?
As clarinets age (and get swabbed over and over) they tend to get sharper
Stanley drucker is good
Also shouldn’t a clarinet be taken apart and then swabbed? It sounds like you are saying you swab it while it is still together.
I do swab it while it is together. Most of the swabbing I do is mid performance. Even at the end of the session, I will swab while its together and then wipe off the sockets and tenons
It doesn't matter if it is together or not together. It does matter to dry the joints after before it is put away. Kids should take their clarinet apart before swabbing for two reasons; 1) it reduces the chances they will get their swab stuck in it 2) it is easier for them to manage their general lack of coordination and judgement.
Interesting I just don’t know if I believe it still. Wouldn’t the vintage market be dead if clarinets only last 6-12 years? If they weren’t owned by pros and used every day. 30 years of use should be around 6-12 years of everyday practice. Why should people want a golden era r 13 if that is the case? I also can’t imagine buying a buffet tosca for 10 grand and it only working optimally for 6-12 years.
The used clarinet world is much more like the used oboe world than any other instrument. There is no such thing, as far as I know, as a golden era Loree. Many oboeists from major orchestras get a new oboe shockingly frequently. On the other had flutes and saxophones have many eras of many manufacturers that are highly sought after. The nature of metal allows for those instruments to retain the same characteristics as when they were new. Bassoons are lacquered so the wood is far more stable. I was excited a number of years ago to find a golden era buffet R13. I played it sparingly because there were so many oddities in it. I ended up selling it without ever using it on a gig that I felt pressure . My current RC prestige is reaching the end of it's usable life. It feels sad. My R13 greenline feels almost the same as when I bought it 25 years ago. No matter what, I think people should play on what makes them feel happy when they play the clarinet. There are a lot of different things that can impact that.
Interesting. I just bought a newish 2020 r13 of of eBay that plays great. I was thinking of waiting for a golden era but now I’m glad I didn’t.
Why does Ricardo Morales change his equipment so often? He played Buffet, Selmer, Backun, Uebel, etc?
I only have theories about that. Even in the list you made, Leblanc is missing. That is a pretty significant one. In my estimation, Ricardo needs outside factors to push himself into new challenges on the clarinet. I don't think he would say that....but that's what I saw. I can only imagine the challenges of being able to play that well.
I love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are the best daddy ever!
I love you!!!!!!!!!! You are the best kiddo ever!
Which Behn mouthpiece are you playing on and what do you think about it?
are you ready for a dumb answer...I don't know. Brad had something has was calling "dark" at the convention in Ireland and I liked it. I am going to make a video about it once he names it and has it available on the website. I had a brief conversation with him about it, but I don't want to put forth information that I am only partially confident is correct. I think all of his equipment is amazing. These mouthpieces in particular are amazing for me.
@@clarinetninja sounds like it is one that he is finalizing to sell to the general public? I’ve tried his Prescott cnc mouthpiece (which I think are still hand finished) and preferred the closed facing which is surprisingly since I’m used to a Hawkins medium facing mouthpiece. I just needed a stronger reed, with it, it felt like I could get the same amount of sound out of it as the Hawkins and was impressed. One of these days I’m going to break down and fork out the dough for the sono (or something similar) and give it a whirl. I’ll probably reach out to him or his company first to chat to see they recommend when I’m ready.
@@samsinite100 I hold Brad in the highest regard. The mouthpieces that are not really for me are top level mouthpieces that are simply not for me. The barrels - amazing. The reed cases - groudbreaking. The reeds - terrific. The bells - I don't know because I have never tried them but I have good reason to think they are great! Even more, he is a terrific person who wants clarinet players to have what works best for them whether it's his product or not. It's probably pretty obvious how much of a fan I am!
I have student's who start off with double lip comfortably. I didn't change them. Playing double lip, the oral cavity is more open and the jaw is lower than single lips. Uses more lip strength towards the mouthpiece. And vibration is much better becos of the upper lip cushion on the Biting plate.
If someone doesn’t want to make the full switch it’s great to do long tones every morning double lip
Totally agree!
As a retired civil engineer and a clarinet enthusiast for over 60 years, this video contained more basic information about sound production than I ever heard over the years. Bravo! There is so much information to absorb that I have saved the video for future reference. Thank you for making this video with Dr. Odrich. I met Ron about thirty years ago at the Clarinetfest in Chicago and found him very easy to have a conversation. Exceptional video.
Thank you for such high praise! I feel fortunate to know Ron. Even more grateful he was willing to spend all that time with me. He has a unique set of knowledge and skills.
What a great educator you are! ❤
you know all the right things to say to make my day! :) Thanks!!
Very cool conceptualization of the relationship between sound production and tonguing. Thank you for this insightful and clear explanation and demonstration.
I am thrilled that you liked it - and grateful you took the time to say so! :)
Yo! occasionally I investigate who made a comment - I went to check out your channel I love the music and the presentation. I believe you are the tenor player. Sounds great!
@@clarinetninja Thanks! Yes that’s me on tenor, soprano, occasionally flute, and in a continuous struggle with that great beast of woodwinds, the clarinet!
@@FrictionFive I know the multiple instrument struggle well! Flute and Piccolo were the ones (and are the ones) that kick my butt. Doing less playing of the multiple woodwinds than I used to just makes it harder! lol crazy life we chose
Hi, Thank you for your videos! I've really enjoyed watching your videos (I'm subscribed) and have gotten a lot of helpful advice. I think you made a video a couple of years ago about where and how to buy a new clarinet. The store was in NYC (I live in Brooklyn), but unfortunately I think it's now closed. Could you recommend a good place in NYC today where I might hunt for my next clarinet? I'm playing an R13 that I got in 1973 (yes, I'm that old) and am looking to perhaps buy a new one, preferably a high-end Buffet. Thanks!
It is frustrating that Buffet closed that shop. Liam at burkewoodwinds.com/ is a Buffet vendor. Michal Norseworthy www.nyc-woodwinds.com/collections/bb-clarinets is a resource even closer to you. Alcides and Heather are in Atlanta (obviously NOT close to you) and do an amazing job with their instruments. Alcides plays in the Atlanta symphony and both he and Heather are people I turn to because they always do great things for people (if you were interested in doing things through the mail). I hope this information helps. The Buffet showroom was a magical place! Its a shame it is gone
This is an area I am having great difficulty with, among others. Playing the recorder, which I've done for decades, I find it difficult to not break up my notes (tounging?), on the clarinet, it's the opposite. Sometimes I think it may be due to the fact that I have a very pronounced overbite, but mostly I think I'm just making excuses. Anyway, thanks for a great video. I'll watch it again.
It sounds to me that your tongue position when slurring may not be putting the tip of your tongue close enough to the reed. (not having heard you play) I would suggest thinking about feeling the tip of the tongue on the reed and evaluating if when you play "normally" it is in that general area. Please let me know how its going:)
@clarinetninja When I renewed my playing I had my tongue planted on my lower teeth. I think that was a function of how much tension and stress I needed to get my emboucure. I've gotten better, my tongue is much higher. When I try to tongue I squeal or find it very ticklish, depending on my position. I don't believe I have great talent, but I make up for it with great tenacity. I'll keep at it.
@@roccoliuzzi8394 I have always found that our own ability to self evaluate talent is a little off (or a lot). If you are not on my mailing list...would you get on it? I have some things coming up I would love to make sure you know about
Very helpful video, thanks!
No you are going to brake the reed
great lesson.. PS..i. see my subway stop on the map behind you 😂
This also helps btw do this make your bottom lip go in a little bit and bite on the top not so hard and blow lightly make sure you fingers are covering the holes fully and not on other keys yet I hope this helps for beginners or the ones who need help putting there mouth on it!❤
By the way never push on the top on the reed it’s gonna break instead do this hold it from the bottom cause it’s better and it won’t break and never press on it harder or worse make sure you lick your reed before you place it! I hope this helped :)
