Podcast: Chris Begg - Investing In Persistent Incremental Progress & Lifelong Learning
Christopher M. Begg is the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer, and Co-Founder of East Coast Asset Management, Inc. Chris is also currently an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia Business School where he teaches Security Analysis.
Chris is one of the most thoughtful people I know and I wanted to share his love of learning that comes through. Chris to me is part philosopher, artists, scientist and investor and our conversation will show you the breadth, depth and height of his knowledge across these domains.
On this episode we also dive into these 3 things.
His mindset - PIPER- Persistent Incremental Progress Eternally Repeated
How to develop and compound your learning process
And the most important principle he’s come across in the last year!
I am Sean DeLaney, the executive performance coach with over a decade of experience working with CEOs, executives, and leadership teams, guiding them beyond traditional definitions of success.
I exclusively work with high-achieving CEOs, executives, and professional athletes who, even at the height of their careers, continue to explore deeper avenues of potential. While these driven individuals aspire for elevated professional heights, they equally crave profound personal fulfillment and a distinct path to infuse their lives with more clarity, direction and purpose.

Listening notes: (paraphrasing of course - any errors? please correct with reply) 1) Passion can come AFTER you make the commitment, dedicate yourself to doing the work. 2) Expire any old beliefs that don't work for you. Explore or try on other beliefs. They might work better for you. Just play around with beliefs. Choose a belief and adopt it and see what results. Take the opposite of a belief you have now and play around with that belief. 3) You can use journaliing for asking yourself questions. What makes me happy? Unhappy? Would I be happier doing X,Y,Z? Or nothing at all? Best answer to questions is always: "I don't know." So don't take the answers that appear as THE answer. Doubt your answers. You may have a different answer tomorrow. 4) Throwing the baby out with the bath water: discarding someone's work or contribution because the author or contributor has personal flaws. 5) "Whatever scares you, go do it." 6) Most people take action in order to feel an emotion. Practice feeling emotions intentionally instead of taking an action to feel the emotion. You can remember a moment that you cherished and close your eyes and really feel that emotion. Maybe you don't need to go to Maui to feel relaxed. Maybe you can relax in other ways. Use visualization of desired reality if you can't physically take yourself to some place. 7) Develop yourself by being consciously aware of you. (A modern version of "know thyself".)

I am very good at what I do because I don´t do anything that isn´t reasonably easy for me to do. I have had three successful careers in NYC, photography. making products out of Plexiglass and running a photo gallery which lead to m being on the BoD of the only association of photo gallery owners AIPAD, and taught three workshops in photography at a major school for adult education in NYC. I later became a journalist covering photo events and collecting photographs,, both of which came from my background in photography and owning a photo gallery.

Thank you Vanessa Druskat. My takeaways: - Intentionally build norms (prepare in advance of conflict), intentionally get to know one another, to build a safe space that nourishes and fosters synergy (1+1=3). - This will stand -only- on the foundation of a strong experience of BELONGING (I am valued here, I am listened and I listen here, I influence and I am influenced here, etc) - an intrinsic human need. - If belonging is not there then FEAR, will dominate interpersonal relationships, and collaboration potential and performance will resent it. - Team members are emotional beings. Emotional Intelligence is at the core of high-performing teams. True caring for your team members is at the core. Our biology is wired in a way that only from CARE - love- we perform at our best. The human brain is a social brain. "Our brains are wired to connect" - Dr. Matthew Lieberman. Emotions and interpersonal relationships regulate how well it might function/perform. - Keep topping up your emotional bank account proactively, you are going to need to withdraw from it. - Diverse teams have the potential to make better decisions. - The higher you climb the organizational ladder the less self-aware you are, because people stop telling you the truth (That is why Coaching might be critical at this stage). "The most important trait of a general is to move the human heart" - French General Maurice de Saxe
