I decided to go to law school at 50 years old. For 25 years I lived in Nashville, Tennessee, and worked as a professional singer while owning various businesses as well as being the director of a non-profit organization focused on international missions. In 2021, I moved back to Texas to be near my family and help with aging parents. That's when I realized that this new season of my life also brought the perfect timing for me to fulfill a lifelong dream of going to law school. I will share the experience with you here so ask any questions you may have. I spend my time either in school, with my family, trying to catch up on sleep, or at my church where I am a worship leader. Occasionally I find the time to do something purely social but for the most part, I choose to be social within all of these things that are non-negotiable duties in life right now. All you need to know is that law school later in life is not only possible but you can do this and thrive! ~Vanessa Maddoux
I Graduated From Law School at 53!
I graduated from law school December 14, 2024
I started Fall 2022 and saw that it was possible to finish law school in 2.5 years instead of 3 and I mad e a plan to do just that. As a non-traditional student, I knew that time was not on my side and just wanted to finish as soon as possible so that I could get out there and practice. And here I am now, with a jurisprudence doctorate and studying for the February 2025 Bar Exam!
Thanks for following my law school journey as a non-traditional student.
As always, I'm happy to reply to comments and questions if you have them.

What was my career before becoming a non-traditional law student?
มุมมอง 2Kปีที่แล้ว
Some of you have asked about my background and what I did as a career (and still do!) prior to attending law school. I tried to give you the cliff notes version of my very non-typical path to law school. What's NOT uncommon is that as a non-traditional student, I'm still working in my career while attending law school. Many people choose part-time programs so they can balance work/life/school. ...
How I Chose A Law School at 50

Yes, I was 50 years old when I was choosing a law school to attend. Today I share my thoughts about how I chose what law school to attend. Reasons why you may choose one law school over the other. How to find out what the requirements are at various law schools for acceptance rates. What do you need for a recommendation and how to write a personal statement. #lawschool #nontraditional #lawstude...
Using OneNote to Organize My Law School Life
มุมมอง 1.2Kปีที่แล้ว
You asked for it and I'm giving you my "hot mess" (sorry ya'll... it's a Monday of all Mondays) presentation of how I use OneNote to organize my law school life. The basic summary is that I create a notebook for each class that I have and then I create a section for each of the 15 weeks of a law school semester and organize my notes within that format. Also, not mentioned in the video BUT you c...

Case briefing taking too long?
มุมมอง 7292 ปีที่แล้ว
Is Case briefing taking up all of your time in law school? I just started my first year in law school and I’m already making adjustments for the best use of my time. This is a RAW unedited video during the week 4 of my 1L year, explaining my process of switching from FULL case briefing to what is called book briefing. I had big plans to post more videos but I simply have not had time for video ...
Congrats!! In my 1L at 56!!
Hey there Congratulations I’m thinking of South Texas - can you do a video on the school (especially if you go part time)
Congrats! I'm in the process of applying as a nontraditional student (36). Is that a "Heard It on House Inhabit" Hat? LOVE.

50, scheduled to take the LSAT in February. Not nervous about it at all, I've always been a late bloomer. But I did think I was alone. Good to see I'm not that rare after all! Many thanks
Me, too. I am older than you. Lol.
Congratulations! At 56 I’m planning to take the lsat in February which I’ve wanted to do for over twenty years. Thanks for the inspiration.
Love this, keep going
congrats venessa, my question to you is your honest opinion on about the law school you attended ? I see the rankings are low but was that reflected in the quality of education you received? i am considering applying because of the opportunity to begin the fall of 2025 as opposed to fall 2026
@@florencelewis3614 in my opinion, it matters more where you want to practice and what your ultimate goal is when choosing a school. If you want to clerk for a Supreme Court justice, then you need to look at the top 15 pools where most of those students are chosen from. In the state of Texas, my school has a high bar passage rate, and we are the number one most award winning school in trial advocacy competition nationwide. For whatever reason they don't use those statistics when determining rankings of schools. Bottom line for me is there is not another law school out there that has a better program for trial advocacy. If you want to be in a courtroom, then STCL is a great place to study. In general, Texas law schools are known for putting out great trial lawyers. University of Texas is a T 14 law school. So maybe there are more big law grads there? Not sure. I was told that Baylor law school has the most graduate sitting on the bench as judges in Texas. Those are the kinds of things that I would pay attention to when choosing a school. What state do you want to practice in… Go to school in that state. What are your career goals afterwards… Find a school best suits your goals in practice: All of that said, one of my best friends is a constitutional law attorney and has argued cases before the Supreme Court and she did not go to a special fancy law school. Once you get that law degree and pass the bar, that's when you prove yourself.
congrats!!
Congratulations on your graduation!🎉🎉
Congratulations! 🎉 I’m so happy for you! I’m a 3L and I’m 52 so there are lots of us out here 🤗 I know it’s not easy so many congrats 👏

I found your channel a few weeks ago while looking up going back to school videos, and listened to your story while going to work. I actually just listened to your most recent one today and its such a coincidence to see this video. This seems like another push for me to make the leap, (I still need my undergrad degree though lol), thank you so much for these videos and God bless you and keep succeeding!🎉
@@Kwixotica not sure where you are in your process of getting the undergrad but if you still have any basic courses you need, I highly recommend using something like Straighterline.com to do those basic courses. You can knock them out fast, inexpensively and then transfer those credits to the university where you want to attend. You can do this. time will pass whether you do or not.
I have been waiting on this video! Congratulations 🎉 you did it!

Did it go by fast?
@@GiovannaMitchell-z7z it really has felt like it's flown by. It's surreal graduating a bit before the class I started with. I have one other classmate from my section who graduated early as well so that's been nice. Law school is the means to an end that is... practicing law. I just kept my eye on that prize!
