Sub-bass control with resonance traps. The holy grail of studio acoustics.
When it comes down to it, the lowest of the lowest audio frequencies can really only be properly absorbed with targeted, tuned resonance absorbers.
For most of us DIY audio engineers, this tends to be outside the scope of what we can do.
The price-performance ratio of resonance absorption is… average. To put it mildly.
And it’s not usually necessary either! You can do WAY more with standard porous material than most people think.
But if you really want to go all out with bass control into the lowest frequencies, resonance absorbers (and membrane absorbers in particular) are your only option.
And that’s what I want to show you in this week’s video.
Jesco from AcousticsInsider and I are wrapping up the treatment of our new demo room by installing membrane traps.
As before, we’ll walk you through the exact process of placing them correctly and of course: before and after measurements.
You don’t want to miss this one.

    Hi, Room EQ Wizard is very most helpful to entry level audio testing analyzers but this test results may not be accurate For example you test the frequency response for one channel in one listening position Again you test after minute your test totally changes it can't give stable Equlization when applying EQ Filters in your frequency response curve. Try to learn FFT based Audio test measurement which it will helpful in real time

    22:20 You could also use sub with 180 phase flip active and set cross-over point to 70 or 80 Hz. If your sub has high enough quality, this typically results in higher audio quality overall.

    The biggest low bass improvement for my system was getting DSpeaker anti-mode for it. It can truly make miracles for low frequency problems. Of course, being a DSP solution it can only fix the audio for selected point in room and other locations may get worse, so it's not a replacement for acoustic treatment.

    I would love to see video about group delay. If I've understood correctly, problems in group delay are the most common cause for poor or sloppy bass even in home studio.

    Question: and how do you know that these deviations are of the room and not of the speakers. almost all commercial HiFi speakers have +-5db response deviations

    • @ThePurpleSnork
      @ThePurpleSnork 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re right, they’re definitely not all just the room. The goal is for speakers + the room + correction = good sound.

    • @zapador
      @zapador 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My understanding is that it doesn't really matter. The goal is not to measure the speaker or the room but the combination of both and to ensure that the combination sound as it should.

  • @colin_sean
    @colin_sean 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very interesting discussion. Square rooms are just no fun for acoustic balance. People always complain how they've spent thousands on absorption, yet hear little improvement. I always recommend large false wall panels 4" from the real wall to essentially "reframe" the geometry of the room, addressing the room modes and and standing waves. This also secures a healthy air gap built into the room.

    I've got a question that I've wondered for such a long time with this video and with Jesco in particular... From 80hz down, why do studios that fall under the small-room-acoustics umbrella not employ a multi-sub approach to flatten the FR of the bass and then use treatment to take care of the decay time? For that matter, if you have your subs mounted directly under your monitors, you could even extend the multi-sub benefit higher to 120hz-150hz... maybe even higher? I've got zero treatment in my 18x19x7ft room and can shape the FR of my subs to whatever I want it to be with my multi-sub (only 2) approach and Dirac Live. This was after optimizing my seating placement and sub placement.

    @ Music City coustics: You are showing everyone that you really know nothing about acoustics. But as Alice in Wonderland asked the Cheshire Cat, “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to”, said the Cat. “I don’t much care where-” said Alice. “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat. If you don’t know where you are going, it is highly probable that you will never get there.

    • @davidschlender587
      @davidschlender587 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can't calibrate a microphone without a reference source. That's what calibration means. You need a calibration file or another microphone that has one. Or you could send your microphone to a lab and they can do it for you.

    • @MusicCityAcoustics
      @MusicCityAcoustics 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! Unfortunately, I'm not sure REW can generate a cal file for your microphone. However, for most room measurements, having a cal file is not super necessary, so don't let it hold you back!

    • @slofty
      @slofty 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Audio engineer here. We don’t bother with cal files because they don’t really make a difference. You are more likely to end up with issues from using one in the first place do to reference or generative errors by whoever did the calibration than just using the device stock as they are good enough to begin with. Just use it out of the box and it’ll be fine. The only places that need absolute accuracy are high-dollar sound production facilities and their mics are $$$$.

I wish REV would make the resulting graph a readable graph to start with! what is the point in featuring the overcomplicated not really usefull grahp first and force you to make multiple adjusments when we all know 99% of us will like to get a base line (!) and easily readable the amount of dbs over and under, easily seeing dips and peaks. As now you have to start making changes all of the time and comparing points values and counting, whyyyy? I thought the principle is present first the simplest most useful version and then let advance needs and users look for the other parts. ...
