How to identify a mineral using other minerals
You can identify minerals by the presence of other minerals. We'll use chromite as an example. This mineral is often associated with serpentine minerals.
These specimens are all from the harbor of Baltimore, Maryland, in the USA.
The one with "epidote": as noted, I can't confirm that vein is epidote. The vein looks a bit greener on this video. The actual crystal color is more toward tan, but other crystals seem kelly green. So it could be two different minerals.

      That would be so cool if the middle one were a meteorite! But really it is just a man-made iron pellet. Those are part of the processing of iron ore. They are common. The other two specimens appear to be natural ore to me. I polished one side of the left specimen. (I used diamond pads to polish it.) Maybe that polish is why it seems man made. I feel spraying my rocks changes the texture and look of the specimens. But this might be a personal choice. Also, there is probably no way to be sure all the fibers are covered. If I could, it would be great to have specimens like this embedded inside solid clear glass!

    • @jameswarner7435
      @jameswarner7435 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@spiritualpathseeker it wouldn't be too difficult to embed one in clear epoxy. To make it perfectly air bubble free you'd want to "de-gas" it right after pouring by putting it in a vacuum chamber. They sell small vacuum degassing chambers for that exact purpose. But I'm a cheapskate, and since it doesn't require a crazy level of vacuum, I've found it is totally possible to rig up an inexpensive diy version that works just fine. That will give you the encased in glass look and protection from the fibers too. But asbestos is incredibly heat resistant, so maybe you could do in in molten glass for real! I don't know if such a thing is even possible. But you'd certainly have a one of a kind piece if you achieved it!

Those folks could maybe break out into different smaller groups. And there are probably such groups. But you can post there and specify the counties or area you would like to connect up with folks on. I haven't joined a club for Jersey, yet. There are of course also local rock and mineral clubs, plus lapidary ones. They often hold events and go on trips where they get access to places that are closed to the public. I have heard there is a very good club in northern DE. (Plus you guys have that geological museum, I think in or near Newark. I think it is maybe connected to the University of Delaware. That is on my bucket list.) I hope this helps you. Let me know what you find out!

    • @spiritualpathseeker
      @spiritualpathseeker ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. As for what is glowing green, I am told it is probably something radioactive. The zinc options (including willemite, which develops out of zinc containing materials) are not prevalent in that part of Maryland, I believe. The specimens are from the Piedmont, which is ultramafic and metamorphic rock. The bedrock is Wissahickon Schist. Not much zinc, I think? But some radioactive mineral traces are present (possibly a form of uranium, for example). But various tests would be needed to determine this for certain. I do have some specimens from up in the former Sterling zinc mine in north New Jersey that glow green in this same way. Those likely have Willemite in them. That is why I was so surprised to find something so green in Maryland! Thank you for asking!

      Hi! I had no idea about this. Thanks for letting me know. I have removed all location info from the video description, and the video itself doesn't have any location info. The number of views is really low, so I doubt the thing did any harm. I added a note that it is 2 years old and that things have changed. That should do the trick. I am an outsider who stumbled across the farm and it seemed worth filming as with my other videos about cool stuff in Baltimore. I had no idea about the concern. Thank you again, and good luck!

      Oh, as for the update video, I will keep any location info off and not include any access info. If I even post one at all. Also, I have deleted any location info in comments. Thank you again!
