Long past due. 6 losses and look like they could lose ten. Unfortunately, this "team" was overrated from the jump.
He must be another project or big money schools would be after him.
This zags team is horrible on defense I can’t even watch them play this year that’s how bad it is
Ajayi needs to play basketball at. Minot State !
Sure hope Coach got this figured out….
Hahaha
I thought it would never come to this, The WCC teams that Gonzaga will be playing, are sharks that smell blood in the water. Gonzaga going to the PAC-12 is a big, big mistake. Supposedly they will be getting more NIL money to attract high quality players. Arizona & Gonzaga play almost the same style of basketball. If a player has to choose between Arizona (warm weather) and Gonzaga (freezing weather) what team would they choose? The future of Gonzaga men's Basketball doesn't look to promising. I wish they would remain in the WCC.
Losing Tommy was the final nail in the zag coffin
I have been saying this for long time. I thought Mark Few should have stepped down, maybe become an AD and let Lloyd become the head basketball coach. The Zags play big time basketball but they are still a mid-major. Going to the PAC-12 is going to present a lot of problems for the University. The increase in monies to get high profile players in my opinion will eventually undermine (it may have already started) the schools academic tradition. It has been a long time since I have been at Gonzaga. I feel with time there will be student grumblings about having basically professional basketball players on campus who are not academically inclined. I would like to know what is the graduation rate of the basketball players. I can remember when I went to Gonzaga how during game day the players ate better food than the rest of the student body. The players would have there fill of steak while the rest of us ate the "garbage" the cafeteria prepared for us. This is one of many examples of preferential treatment the players had over the rest of the student body.
first year the zags won't be going to the dance , i see 2 to 3 more game lost. they will lose to st maries ,oregon st and san fran before it's over rough year for the zags
Game vs USC … Nembhard, Battle, Ajayi, Gregg, and Ike they looked good playing together! They dont need Hickman and Nembhard to start together both can create plays for their teammates and both can score if needed. They just aren’t working together on the defensive side of the ball and believe the line up they had vs USC will work and take them deep into the tourney possibly winning it all. That would give them a ball handler and scorer off the bench and a defensive extra big in the starting line up which is desperately needed right now. Hope Mark Few sees this and makes the switch before the season goes down the drain with all this talent!
I was surprised that St Mary's wasn't getting more votes so maybe due to the quad 2 losses like you mentioned
WCC added 2 new Teams. Are we sure the WCC tournament is still a double bye?
The Net Rankings is what the NCAA committee determines teams placement in the big dance. Zags are ranked #20 in the Net Rankings this week.
They will continue to drop in the net during WCC play.
What happened ... To the Zag's Look back at the 1st half of the Baylor game ... " They could beat anyone " ? Team not Motivated? Can they step up in the Big Moment ?
Lack of motivation...possible infighting...anger issues...me first attitudes...not payed enough to play better...same old stuff, different day...head coach thinking about hall of fame and Olympics instead of his team...you name it, end product, disjointed game play... Not holding my breath but maybe next year :)
This version of the team has the necessary talent to go deep into the tournament. Putting the pieces together and developing an effective game to game strategy is the responsibility of the head coach. Is Few slipping? I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. In fact more and more ever since the gross nepotism he displayed when he let his son walk on the team. Let’s face it, he has no business taking up a slot on the roster. I wonder what that does to morale. I’m guessing nothing good. 😢
Don't think it's really an issue having a coaches son as a walk on. Izzo and Hurley had their sons on their teams recently and don't think it affected morale on their team
This machine went haywire
allie turner is a baller!!
I don't get it. You have six key guys back from last year, and you don't start the first five and have Huff come in as the sixth man. The transfer students should be the seventh and eighth guys off the bench. The only guy who makes things happen is Ben Gregg. Let's go back to the basics with the guys that know your system. As for Battle, he is a one man show, not a team player.
Gonzaga Zags aren't dominant anymore!!! They have fallen big time! Has Mark Few lost his touch?
Too many issues to state. The bottom line is I feel like this team thinks wearing the Gonzaga jersey is enough, and that teams will just fold. We lack toughness, focus, and can't seem to work hard for a full 40 minutes. Not sure this team figures it out tbh. Play Innocenti, good defense and a hugh IQ, makes good reads. Why not, mine as well get him reps and keep him happy.
I post every so often when i decide to tune in. I've stopped regularly listening because I feel the channel is very softball towards gonzaga and lacks any real criticism for fear of poking the bear. This coaching staff, Mark Few, and the supporting Gonzaga media have ALL failed to identify talent, especially at the guard position, they have also failed to coach and develop talent effectively. Nembhard is NOT an elite PG, putting him in the category brings shame to all the GREAT gonzaga guards and honestly this channel tries to push Nembhard propaganda so hard I actually stopped listening. Our team has become a nepo/reputation team it seems, Joe Few on the team brings up some interesting questions. It's a culture problem, our coaching (Mark Few) is a decade behind the ball schematically, when high level recruits come here they do worse between their senior HS years and their Rookie NBA year, and our media (Locked on Zags, Dan Dickau, Rick Fox, etc, etc) are all yes men and will be a fight for nostalgia until there is nothing left of GU men's basketball unless something changes.
Doesn't he have the single season assist record for Gonzaga? He also has the most double doubles for points and assists and that's only a year and a half in the program. Leads the nation in assists and assists per game while 2nd in assists to turnover ratio. Seems pretty elite to me
Stromer should be ashamed of his shooting abilities !
I think there's a really easy fix for Gonzaga: bench Khalif Battle and start Michael Ajayi for defense. Few did it last year when Dusty Stromer was starting the first half of the year and then when Ben Gregg became a starter, the team instantly turned around
I am concerned for our seniors and what these losses are going to do for their potential for the draft, or NBA in general. I also worry about our drafting ability going forward. That said my heart bleeds for these individuals.
Not a single NBA player on this team
Don't be concerned for the Zags seniors. Only potential NBA talent on this team is Huff.
First time poster. I've been watching and supporting Gonzaga's rise for 25 years and will continue to do so. I do not disagree with one thing that you said. Very well reasoned analysis. One thing about losing is that it is an opportunity to learn. It does not seem like they are taking that opportunity. I believe that some of the career high play from opponents is that inability of GU to learn and correct from the losses and that gives teams hope. The "If I have a great game I know we can beat them" mentality. Keep up the great podcasts and analysis.
DRIVE TO THE HOOP, KHALIF!!! The freethrow line is calling for you! 💪
I'm hoping the coaches make this a priority going forward. The guy is 92% at the line this year but so far only 65 attempts
Go Zags..............ZAG UP.
And yet, @EvanMaya still has the Zags as a top-10 team. That model needs an adjustment.
I gotta say I think this will benefit the Zags in the long run coming WCC tournament, the flaws are showing and there's time to fix it
mark few needs to watch tape on how houston defends thats how you play defense. get right up on your man, be more aggressive be physical. There needs to be a look in the mirror, this was embarrassing, the team didnt respond from thursday thats concerning, there needs to be a want to attitude, match the other teams intensity and then some.Toughness has nothing to do with size, physical strength or athleticism. Some players may be born tough, but I believe that toughness is a skill, and it is a skill that can be developed and improved."Players play, but tough players win." time to bring out the war rebounding drill in practice.
The problem is the way things get called in the WCC the starting lineup might foul out if they try to defend like Houston 😂 Joking aside, as a start I would like to see the Zags force teams to initiate their offense further out than they are used to like Baylor did against them in the 2021 national championship game
@@doubleandy they need to make other teams more uncomfortable
I hope they can at least make the tournament maybe he will get them to peak at the right time.
Ike’s attitude ( mouth) is severely affecting the team and fans!! Ryan is constantly having to talk him out of throwing his fits. His attitude is embarrassing!
I was at the Santa Clara game and when Ike got his 3rd foul, which was a dumb foul, Ryan was full on yelling at Ike
Mark Few has been miss managing player development for the last couple years. Rashir Bolton got worse, Sallis never developed, and Malachi Smith never hit his stride. In my opinion, you are seeing the same thing with Battle and Ajayi. He needs to just let them play 40 minutes and gain confidence/ get comfortable. Instead he rolls with Stromer who does absolutely nothing. At this point, I’ve seen enough of Stromer. Stromer is the type of player we used to get 10 plus years ago. He’s not skilled and will never be a scorer. He’s literally a Kyle Dranginis 2.0.
He's good at what does, but I agree, I don't see him expanding his game until he's forced to
Stromer is athletic and a good one on one defender. He's shown the ability to take his defender off the dribble and hit the midrange or take it to the rim. I think he may lack confidence as he passes up too many open looks which you'll hear Dickau mention on the TV broadcasts from time to time. Calling him unskilled seems a little unfair to me.
Mark Few said he needs to teach basic defense 😮😮😮
Didn’t he realize this after the non-conference losses to West Virginia, Kentucky, UCONN, UCLA? Mark Few is being outcoached and not using the bench to his advantage.
@@highflyer6421guess not 😢
Innocenti didn't play at all, which is weird cause he's an elite perimeter defender
Should have thought of that a few year's ago..
I think it is a combination of a lot of things. They get everyone's best shot. Other teams play loose, and the Beavs and SC shot an abnormal percentage. Yes the defense needs to get back to the way they were playing earlier in the year. More energy. They now have to come out in every game with more intensity. Especially on defense. Great defense makes up for a lackluster night on offense. Agree that the coaches have not gotten acclimated with this talent and come up with a best rotation. It was an embarrassing game for Bulldog standards. But I believe this team can still bounce back. GO ZAGS!
Serious question, were they playing better defense earlier in the year? 2 of their better defensive games, Baylor and UConn, both missed a lot of uncontested 3s. The best perimeter defender sitting on the bench is wild.
To your point about shooting an abnormal percentage, in the SC game, Dickau mentioned one player had only 2 3s on the season and another was shooting like 15%. I'm relatively sure those players were not on the scouting report for chasing off the 3pt line. The frustrating thing is OSU has a let down and ends up losing to San Francisco and I wouldn't be surprised if SC has a sub par performance from 3 against WSU this week snd ends up losing as well.
I think you are way off base without Ryan and Hickman it's a 103-79 loss yes size is nice in the backcourt lack of pure athletic speed on the defensive end is a issue no rim protector for years also a problem coach few hasn't forgot how to coach or make changes
Hickman has been coming on as of late I agree. The problem is other big guards and wings are taking advantage of our guards due to size or whatever else you want to call out. Rim protection is also a big issue I agree.
The hall of fame coach at North Carolina Dean Smith didn't like to recruit Junior college players because he was getting players with ingrained habits that was incompatible with the style of Tarheel basketball. The only player that Dean Smith ever recruited from JC was the great Bob McAdoo. Yes I realize this isn't identical to today's transfer portal. It is very similar to todays transfer portal system. Transfer portal players may look good on paper or film but once they get on the court it is a different story. The attitude that transfer players have "you have recruited me for the way I play, now my style of play is a problem for your system." With this attitude players will be reluctant to change their particular style of play. If pressured to change they have the option to transfer. Unlike previous years recruited players who were committed to a 4 year program had to adapt change their style of play because the option to transfer was not as easy as it is today. To sum up team chemistry is now a 50/50 proposition, Because the transfer portal has made recruiting players a "crapshoot." This is the new "reality" of college basketball coaches either adapt or go the way of the Dodo bird.
@@fr.davidtelemond2426 👍
One concern is that the Kennel may be beginning to lose its intimidating aura to visiting teams. Zags are starting to look like mere mortals. Still , I love and support these guys and I choose to not be that fair weather fan.
I was in the Kennel for the Santa Clara in the front row and it was pretty loud the whole game, Santa Clara just hit literally every single contested 3 pointer in the second half and you can't stop a team like that
@ Ain’t that the truth. The Zags are still my team, merci kristiandude. I actually appreciate them more now as people and less some ranking. In my life, I could never play this game we love at anywhere near the expertise of every Zag player, man or woman. So I watch and encourage.
I'm not sure I buy into the size argument of Nembhard and Hickman when it comes to defense. How about a guy like Jevon Carter from WVU? Wasn't he like 6'? I remember that guy really got after it on D. Recently, I've been watching some interviews of former NBA players talking about John Stockton and sounds like he was quite the defender as well.
In the Kentucky game second half, Kentucky went right after Nembhard. Gonzaga couldn't figure out how to stop it.
@paulfreire1983 and that's part of the strategy by looking to exploit the size differential. There are still ways for smaller defenders to mitigate that though. Smaller guards need to use their quickness and make larger defenders uncomfortable
Well, tough show but it had to be said. Appreciate the candor. Sure hope the coach takes heed and pounds out a good week of practice. Close out the month hot! Keep shooting Nolan!!
I'm leaning towards blaming the coaches for not utilizing Battle's strength, which is his ability to attack the rim and get to the line. I'm beginning to wonder if it has something to do with Gonzaga's offensive scheme and how much of it runs through Ike and Huff. I'm wondering if Arkansas ran more of a 5 out offense which allowed him to attack the lane easier. If that was the case, I know Gonzaga won't run that offense, but I think they could at least run a get or zoom action in order to get him going downhill attacking the rim. It's frustrating seeing him float around the perimeter for a majority of the game and jacking up 3s when he could be putting foul pressure on the other team
💯 Khalif driving to his right is an automatic bucket, or trip to the line!
@PlanForExcellence Automatic indeed. It's awesome having a player shooting over 90% from the line that attacks the rim with abandon. I get teams gameplanning to take away his right hand off the dribble and that's why I'm frustrated that the coaching staff isn't running more actions to get him going downhill into the lane. Only has 65 attempts 20 games into the season while he had 223 last year with Arkansas.
In games decided by 10 points or less last year and so far this year Zags are 6-12. The 7 years prior to that 49-14! You are right Mark Few does not coach defense. National champ game team of 2017 only gave up 61.5 pts a game. That number this year is almost 73 points a game.
Andy thanks for critical yet level headed commentary. Never give up the positive side of things!
2nd game, which at least to me, seems like a blatant missed 3 in the key call. Tillie goes into the key at 11:54 and then puts up a shot at 11:49. In the OSU game, at the end of the first half, 15 was in the key for like 6 seconds and you could hear someone yelling "3...3" from the crowd. My other gripe is the inconsistency with the NCAA and the flagrant foul. Ike swipes down on Carr in the Kentucky game, refs go to the monitor, and they leave it as a common foul. This game, Ike swipes down on the player and it's upgraded to a flagrant. I think it was Richard Fox who said on the broadcast he had an opinion of what should be called in that situation but basically had no idea what the refs were going to do
I totally agree about the refs. In the previous game there were several travels that weren’t called also.
Go Lady Zags!🤙
Is this team capable of making the tournament as an at large bid? Realistically they are going to have to win the WCC tourney. The conference has caught up and started to exceed Gonzaga in talent .
that's embarrassing
They can win it all, if the coaching staff does a better job!
At-large bid is still in play, On3 released a bracket this morning and had Gonzaga as a 6 seed, so we would have to catastrophically fall to not make the tournament
@@thatkristiandude4048The catastrophic fall is happening
The Zags got embarrassed by all the 3’s made in the 2nd half. Likely out of the top 25 come Monday.
Gurantee that they’re out of the top 25
Perhaps a very slight chance they remain in the top 25 due the other teams around them losing as well. Baylor, Georgia, and Utah State will drop out. Memphis had a bad loss to Temple while Michigan had a bad loss to Minnesota, but they each had a win this week... perhaps they get punished for the bad losses and drop out as well. Looks like the SCU loss was only a quad 2 loss, but I think giving up so many points in both losses will be the deciding factor with voters and Zags drop out as well.
E k has caused us two games with stupid fouls and the defensive coaching is non existent
Now that the Santa Clara game has concluded, it definitely looks like that wake up call went to voicemail.
These zags are not a team. They are ending the streak of NCAA tournament bids
Wow, now a loss to Santa Clara. The chance of a national championship has closed. In the way, college sports are turning out I don't see them going anywhere near it. I pray I'm wrong.
THIS.TEAM.IS.NOT.GOOD
I thought the Zags played well until the last 3-5 minutes of regulation. And stunk in OT. They have not been able to close. A couple of careless turnovers. And Battle guilty of forcing a few shots when he is out of control. And the fact that the Beavers shot the lights out, it adds up to another close loss. I also think that Mark is having a hard time with rotation. So much talent and not enough minutes to keep his players in rhythm. Ajayi is a big puzzle. Great team talent, but putting it together is complicated.
