13:25 yes. Hua Cheng came up with this name because of general Hua and because people called him "Cheng-zu" (ruler of the city.. leader.. something like that). You could say this name was born in sheer gay panic. Now I'm not sure how accurate it is but I think it is even confirmed..?

Am I the only one that felt like my heart was ripped out of my chest when Xie Lian realized that San Lang had left him? The fact that he left his ring behind and placed it around Xie Lian's neck made me both happy and sad. Its like an unspoken promise of marriage between the two of them. Also the song choice and the flash back of their time together... it made me tear up. I can't wait to see your reaction to season 2.

Hua Cheng is playing on words here, wanting to be called "San Lang" by Lian: in old Chinese, women used "- Lang" as pet name for their Husband/lover. Think the old word "Beau": It is both a name and a way to refer to a male significant other. Meaning: Xie Lian can think Hua Cheng just wants to keep low profile, or that he doesn't like his "Hua Cheng" alias, and thus wants to keep the name "San Lang" (where Beau=name) OR Xie Lian might realise Hua Cheng is being cheeky/flirty, wanting to be called by a word that essentially means "my dear/lover" by Xie Lian. (Here Beau=male suitor)

On the ugliness of Hua Cheng: He got mistreated as a kid by everyone around him, and was told he was ugly and awful (due to things that would be a spoiler). That is how he still sees himself compared to Xie Lian: As an ugly dirty streetrat.

To be fair, the snakes are animals. Like the wolves in the first episode. The wolves were scared of Hua Cheng. I think the snakes are scared of him for the same reason: They sense he is a big scary ghost.

Lovely to see someone else watch it, but you should really watch the sub. The main characters are okay, but some of the side character acting and translation in season 1 is cringe. And besides, it’s nice to watch something in Mandarin for once.

So surprised and excited to see you react to this! TGCF is my favorite of MXTX's works, so its always nice to see someone new get introduced to it! Having said that I will admit that for all this donghua is very well animated, there are definitely some details that get left out/cause confusion for anyone who hasn't read the books or manhua. Still, it does a fairly good job overall, so I'm super excited to see your reaction to the rest of s1 (and hopefully s2 as well)! Also, if you plan on watching more Chinese animation I would definitely recommend MDZS, its also based on one of MXTX's books series, and, if I had to compare, has more fight scenes than TGCF with good animation! Plus its fully animated, so you can watch the complete series and get the whole story, while TGCF is no where near being fully animated. If you want something a little different I'd also recommend The King's Avatar. It's got 3 seasons, a 3 episode OVA, and a movie. Aside from s3(which I don't recommend watching), everything is pretty decently animated, and its fun overall, plus the last 20-25 minutes of the movie are essentially one long fight scene and its really good.
