    What an amazing and fun journey. I love seeing each new top and what improvements you come up with. I suggest no knurling as it is not very aero. If traction is an issue, try wearing a rubber glove or fingertip cover.

    I have to say I don't like the look of the titanium rod, would look much better as a single continous part. Have you considered using stiffer aluminum alloys like 7005?

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops 55 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      Hmm I kind of agree but this feels like a natural progression of the design. I’m sure I could make it out of a different Al alloy, although thicker. It seems like an unnecessary length to go for a small difference in aesthetics which goes a bit against my mission to prioritise function

      @@hiper_tops Don't worry, I for one absolutely dig the new design! In my opinion a huge improvement over the previous ones. And the use of different materials just adds to the interesting engineering factor.

    What about using a denser and smaller flywheel. would you not be able to get higher speeds if you used a highly polished copper or silver? Tungsten?

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops 51 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      This design uses 90/10 tungsten-copper which has a density of about 16.7g/cm^3. The only thing denser which I could plausibly use right now is pure tungsten at 19.9g/cm^3 however it is difficult to machine and slightly anisotropic in density. However I plan to try it!

    If you're trying to polish certain parts, you can consider using methods from jewelery making / gemstone grinding, where artisans use shellac or other types of resins to glue already finished parts to some other piece that you can then mount in your lathe or any other tool. This methods allows you to mount any weirdly shaped objects relatively solidly. If it is done right, you can remove it again without leaving any residue on the surface, or residues that you can remove using solvents. I'm however definitely not an expert in this, maybe someone else can help out.

      It’s an interesting idea I would like to try but as far as the ‘rules’ go, unless a top can topple, it isn’t a top! And it’s difficult to implement air bearing in such a way to allow this.

    Fantastic! A video of you making the top would be great. Did you make it on a manual lathe? Looks like a fun project. I'm going to make a few tops for my grandkids. I have 1-1/2" (50MM) brass and aluminum. Hardened bearing balls are cheap for the tip. How can I make a base without fancy materials? I can't make a big radius on the base either with a manual lathe unless I make a ball turner tool. Maybe I'll just polish a piece of brass for it to spin on, or make a base with a stem and use a ball mill to make the pocket.

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you! There are some clips of my process in earlier videos but I am planning to show more soon. Sounds like you have the appropriate materials for a good top - will it have an internal tip or more conventional? For tops under 300g with external ball tips around 4mm and larger, a concave mirror like you would use for makeup does a really good job, even better with a very very thin oil film. If the top is much heavier or has a much sharper tip, it will likely significantly scratch the mirror. In this case, consider a smooth concave ceramic surface - some plates, bowls etc can work. Best of luck!

    HIGH PERFORMANCE! Has anyone noticed that a top can spin much longer and up to twice as long if its not being observed. No cameras or recording devices or anything that can be considered a recording device such as a tv or radio or tape recorder, etc. can be in the room or used outside the room visible or not or it wont work. Must have any windows and mirrors completely covered or wont work. Door must be closed and lights shut off. You can only know when it stops from the sound it makes when stopping as personally heard from outside the room or to see that it has passed the normal stopping time when checking, in which case it will stop spinning immediately afterwards. I discovered this by accident and yet to turn it in to the science community to be read and tested by peers. How a top knows when is is being watched or recorded is beyond me to answer, but it does.

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I made all of these :) What are you making the top for? The best design will depend on how you are starting it and what other rules you are following. Generally though, a dense flywheel/mass concentrated outwards, a hard tip and harder base are a good starting point. But balance is also super important!

I'm curious as to what kind of considerations you put into the nurling, is it a source of drag because of the ridges? or does not really effect the spin time as much? regardless really neat stuff you do, super fun to watch the times keep creeping up and up :)

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      From practical experience, ruby balls have not helped. My theory is that they do not benefit from lubricants like sharp tips do due to the large apparent contact area causing more fluid drag. (Sorry if this is a bad explanation). However this is an important area I’m looking into. If you know where to find such diamond, let me know!

Similar shape to yours but made of wood mainly, but bigger. They can spin over 2 hours, Yes over 2 hours. but never claimed or never been recorded as world record. Do your research. Google “ gasing kelantan”
