    What happens at roughly 5:10 ? It looks like a jump cut (The frame when the onscreen timer changes from 1:50.31 to 1:50.34)

      Good catch. That really does look odd. I think the timer jumping is not that strange though, it seems to always jump in 3-5 ms increments

      @@Sheepy007 while making a (true) realtime graph would be hard, just recording the rpm in intervals of a minute or 30 seconds would be good enough
      Also I believe he already has made graphs for drag so I would guess for that he needs rpm data, so he likely already has a system for that

    just watched this 5 times in a row, I am confidently confirm that this is indeed a spinning top - & yes, if you look closely, it is indeed spinning.

    btw your record is the coolest one to hold imo, its weird that you have to be the one that adds so many stipulations to your record title - when every other world record (like the battery powered, or the one w/ a shroud) are the ones that are stepping outside of what would be the traditional perception of what a 'spinning top' even is.

    A while back I commented here estimating an overall revolution count of 1 mil. This was _wildy_ incorrect.
    I screwed up:
    - the assumption that the decay is a simple exponent. Checked an rpm value around halfway it's fit was way off.
    - 3 (!) out of the 4 values I had to plug into the integral. But I wrongly assumed the function I need to use anyway so this just added insult to injury.

  • @StagnantMizu

    pretty sure you can break this if you spin it with a wire or is that illegal

  • @iacoposimonelli7191
    @iacoposimonelli7191 ปีที่แล้ว

    You say; "...spinning in normal atmospheric conditions (no vacuum or shroud)" . Just a clarification: my shroud does not change the normal atmospheric conditions at all: it only changes the direction of the flows of the air around the flywheel, interrupting the viscous pump effect. For this reason my tops with a shroud spin longer.

  • @jasonkeating9958

    How long would it spin if it's spun up with a high powered air compressor

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This one started at a little over 2000 rpm. If I doubled the rpm to 4000, it would only spin for around 10-15 minutes more. This is because the rate of rpm decay with angular velocity is quite exponential. The top loses about 5% of its rpms every minute throughout the spin.

  • @insylogo
    @insylogo ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the indicator paint is causing it to wobble early here. You can see that the wobble follows the gap inthe indicator fluid or whatever it is by 90 degrees.

    • @iacoposimonelli7191
      @iacoposimonelli7191 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the paint.. Tungsten alloys have not homogeneous density, so, even if the machining was accurate, these tops are almost always unbalanced, out of the lathe. I think that James tried to fix the unbalance by shifting the tip a bit, (by filing its sides), but this made the tip off centered, and this is why the top wobbles.

  • @mattemond777
    @mattemond777 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Is it really necessary to spin the top for over 3 minutes? Can you not get it spinning at maximum rpm’s after like 10 seconds?

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You would be surprised! Yes it takes a long time, the rpm gain over time increases decreasingly. To start with it picks up speed fast but to get it a bit faster to its max speed takes longer. I usually measure the speed with a tachometer to ensure I am satisfied with the speed I start with.

I would really like to gift one with these to a family member next year and clearly your machining and finish quality is ‘top’ notch. It wouldn’t even have to be the 1 hour+ one I would happily by an older model, if just a model that doesn’t your the earth to source and machine.

      Yes I made all of these :) What are you making the top for? The best design will depend on how you are starting it and what other rules you are following. Generally though, a dense flywheel/mass concentrated outwards, a hard tip and harder base are a good starting point. But balance is also super important!

  • @ivoackermann15

    even though i want to believe that you broke this record there seem to be several cuts in the video one that's easy to spot is at 1:50 on the timer (5:10 of the video.)
    from what i can tell there is a reflective bit at the stump (most probably to measure rpm) this together with framerate appears to be steady for a few seconds there. then it switches instantly to black. thats odd. please find a video editing/production reason why it appears that way.

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can assure you this video is real! I added the text and adjusted volume levels etc in CapCut which involved splitting the raw video but this should not have impacted the timing at all. I suspect this is an artefact of frame rate interfering with the slowing flashing of the black marker (start of the spin is about 2095 rpm so 35 revolutions per second and this would decrease throughout the spin). On my iPhone, the black marker is flashing rapidly, but on TH-cam, at the timestamp you gave, it appears quite motionless so it may also be a video compression/bitrate thing. It does look odd for sure haha.

    • @iacoposimonelli7191
      @iacoposimonelli7191 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe that the video is real. James learned from me how to make tops in that way, I am making them for years. A brass top with that design can spin for up to about one hour. No surprise that a tungsten top can do the same, he should be able to do even better, given the density advantage of tungsten over brass.

    Why is there a cut after 3:35?

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops  ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn’t haha that’s a frame rate issue when exporting to TH-cam. The black mark is flashing around 30 times per second and is slowing down continuously. However the frame rate I exported is a constant 60fps (I think) so it doesn’t always line up - hence the jumps. This effect should disappear as the top slows :)

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right about stability, furthermore, the stem isn't really long enough for this style of spinning! So it would take a lot of practice to be able to launch the top without having it topple off the base :) I'll try this in a future video!

    You could still beat your current record if you didn't start off the spin by hand. No doubt this isn't a very controlled way of launching the spinning top, you cannot control for initial KE and last but by no means least, you'll induce micro dilineations at the contact point every time you spin it because you'll never spin it perfectly and always push it laterally, essentially "scratching the surface". Not sure how much time this would get you but you'l definitely see some improvement.

    • @hiper_tops
      @hiper_tops  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes this is true, perhaps I should find another similar but more scientific challenge to aim for now that the 1 hour barrier is broken. In this case using a tool to start the top in a controlled manner would be fine. Or perhaps in my testing I should always use a drill etc and only use my fingers for record attempts ...
