Rocky 5 - 7 Reasons Why It Went Wrong
In this video, we break down 7 reasons why Rocky V was the franchise's biggest failure and nearly killed the legacy of the Italian Stallion. From a weak story to baffling creative decisions, this sequel fell far short of its legendary predecessors. But what exactly went wrong?
We’ll explore:
1) Losing the Heart of Rocky - How Rocky V abandoned the underdog spirit that made the franchise great.
2) The Escalation Problem - Why the shift from Cold War supervillains to a street fight with Tommy Gunn felt like a massive downgrade.
3) The Money Problem - How an absurd financial subplot turned Rocky from a millionaire into a bankrupt former champion overnight.
4) The Apollo Creed Problem - Why the franchise wasted Apollo’s death and the impact it could have had on Rocky’s journey.
5) Rocky’s Family Drama - The film sidelined Adrian and Robert, undermining the emotional stakes of the story.
6) The Health Crisis Contradiction - How Rocky’s brain damage diagnosis was completely ignored in future movies.
7) Training Montage Fatigue - How the once-iconic montages became over-the-top and meaningless by this point.
Despite all these missteps, the Rocky franchise managed to recover with Rocky Balboa and Creed. But should Rocky V have been made at all? Did it deserve its reputation as the worst film in the series? Let us know in the comments below!

WOLF OF WALL STREET - Breakdown of How Much Was Fact and Fiction
This explanation video leaves out a couple of big factors: "Home Alone" opened the same day and everyone wanted to see it and see it multiple times. They put "Rocky V" off and some were influenced by negative word-of-mouth. Being a regular moviegoer, I looked forward to seeing "Rocky V" but put it off a couple of weeks after seeing "Home Alone" twice. Other movies like "Misery" and "Kindergarten Cop" also drew audiences away. Sequels up to four and five were already made out to be a joke in the pop culture, something that at that point was only common in horror movies and silly comedies like the Police Academy series.
Completely agree with everything that you’ve said. The later films were more about spectacle and sensationalism rather than honesty and sincerity. They really should’ve stopped after three. I thought the original trilogy was the perfect way to end the series. And although I enjoyed Rocky Balboa and it was done exceptionally well. We didn’t need Rocky four or five. I thought they were both ridiculous.
Rocky I - One of the greatest movies of our time. Rocky II - meh 🫤 Rocky III - personal favorite Rocky IV - the beginning of the end Rocky V - the worst Rocky Balboa - ridiculous Never watched any of the Creed movies.
Not having Rocky in a real boxing match was a mistake. I hated the street fight. It should have happened in the ring. Rocky wins and then retires as champion.
This is the first video I watched on your channel 😀 Im now a new subscriber Anyway My personal favorites are One and Six The Creed Films Then 2 3 4 in that order 5 is so brutal at times I hesitate to watch that with my girlfriend who's never seen it 😂 Also just a note with all due respect to Conservative voters I must add that Stallone is MAGA supporter and believe whatever you want about 47 I find it odd that Rocky represents the underdog overcoming odds MAGA represents bullying and violence towards those who are underdogs Peace ✌️🕊️
Henry Cavil is the next Bond
Rocky 5 is mostly unpopular due to making it a hybrid street fighter movie. Everything else, not so much problematic. Every other installment, it's back to being a complete sports movie.
Toooooooo many sequels!
Rocky 5 was arguably the worst Rocky movie ever made and I like to think it didn't exist. Thank God that Sylvester Stallone made Rocky Balboa to provide a proper sendoff.
5 was excellent - it was a massive improvement over the 4th one as it went back to the basics of the first two movies.
I would have liked to see Tommy reconcile with Rocky at the end. Tommy should have punched Duke (instead of Rocky) and then gone back to Rocky for training.
We should've got that Union Cane fight😂😂😂
Number 6 failed to mention Rocky's other health issue. In Rocky 2, the issue was with Rocky's bad eye. After he won the belt, it was never mentioned again.
Another big mistake was Rocky fighting Tommy in the street at the end rather than in the ring. Also the George Washington Duke character was too cartoonish and was just irritating. Overall, yes Rocky 5 was a bit of a mess but at least they made an effort to course correct and there's plenty of good moments.. Mickey's speech being a massive highlight!
I worked with Tommy Morrison just a couple months before he passed. I was doing a celebrity interview in Indianapolis, and as a favor to the person being interviewed, I hired Tommy to hold the boom mic (a job which honestly wasn't even necessary). The man I was interviewing was supporting Mr. Morrison, just out of the kindness of his heart. During the gig, Tommy was surly, quit early, and was unappreciative of the huge overpay I provided him, knowing he was down on his luck. The poor guy looked absolutely terrible, and had to take frequent breaks and sit down. Even though he was just two years older than me, he looked a couple decades older. I was a huge Tommy Morrison fan back in my college days, so it was really sad to see a former boxing legend in such a shattered state.
Making him rich was strange
Professional boxers in the US tend to get rich
Jason Statham?😊
Jason Statham is d best!😊❤
Cavill, Idris have it what it takes. Aron seems distant, unsympathetic
I would like to see godfather 4
That Mickey flashback was INCREDIBLE 😢
Best scene in this movie and among the best in the entire franchise, but the motivational speech he gives to Robert in Rocky Balboa, IMO, was the best in the entire series. It really spoke to all of us fans of the franchise and about life in general. Brilliant writing by Stallone.
Balboa earned Creeds respect and gets why culture hey were friends
I thought Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6) was the best movie. A great end to a great character. But I thought it got overstretched with the Creed franchise!
Yes, Rocky Balboa was the proper sendoff to the original series.
The "Creed" movies are all mediocre knock-offs, coasting on the "Rocky" name.
Rocky 5 is my 2nd favourite next to 4…
I disagree. Rocky V was about Rocky losing his identity as a boxer and trying to live again with Tommy Gunn as his Prodigy Son, which inadvertently replaced his son Robert who feels neglected and has to deal with being bullied. Adrien sees her husband in a lot of pain and tries to help him accept his change from the mansion and being rich to going back to the way things were. I do agree about the money mis-managment but that can be easily explained as Rocky was completely concentrating on Drago and his fight in Russia and not paying attention to his finances or the dis- honest accountant who took the money to bet against Rocky to lose and make a lot of money and then replace the funds that he took to not get in trouble. It is a different kind of movie and it’s different than the previous three movies where in the end he accepts his loss, get closer to his son and wife and realizes he’s better off. The stuff between Rocky and Mickey is priceless when he’s looking at the flashback at the old gym. The movie isn’t the greatest of the Rocky sequels but it’s alright. I like the montages in Rocky III and IV and I think Apollo was in the right to fight the Russian and be over-confident to think he could beat him and end up dead. I do wish that they hadn’t killed him off. Sly probably should’ve had him in the hospital recovering from the injuries and still had Rocky go to Russia to fight Drago but that’s just me.
I agree 💯
I liked Rocky V,probably a little more than Rocky 4. I admit Rocky V had its problems, like his Son in Rocky 4 is probably 10 & is about 14 in Rocky V. I could go on….
I disagree with the Apolo segment. The film goes over several times why Apolo wanted to fight. "If the warrior ain't got a battle to fight, than the Warrior may as well be dead, Stalion"... remember that?
That's a great statement. Like Mike Tyson making an unsuccessful comeback after nearly 20 years away from the ring.
I don’t mind that Rocky V takes the story back to the street level where Rocky started. But the issue is that the franchise wasn’t yet ready to make a film that wasn’t centered around Rocky himself. Had they made it more about Tommy, developing his character some more, giving us more of his story so that we might find him sympathetic, it could have made for a more interesting villain turn. Had that happened, we could have seen Balboa’s struggle to reconcile with the fact that maybe he’s not as good a trainer as Micky or Apollo/Duke, who kept him on the straight and kept him humble. So now you have Rocky struggling internally and Tommy struggling with all the external temptations and excesses that being a champion brings. And you see both men pulling against one another. The problem that remains is how to end it. Because if Rocky’s brain injury remains in the story (which I think it should bc it’s a good prompt to get him to retire), then he can’t get in the ring. Maybe instead of a street fight, Rocky finds a way to reconcile with Tommy, who ditches GW Duke, then goes on to defend his title with Rocky in his corner. And that basically kickstarts the second leg of the franchise where Rocky becomes a successful trainer. Maybe at the end of the film, you see Rocky poke his head down the basement to see young Robert hitting the punching bag. And that doesn’t really disturb the ensuing films that much. Rocky can still attempt a comeback 15 years later and train another young protege a decade on from that.
Wrong!!!! It was bad bcs it didn’t have an actual ring fight!
Exactly
I personally like rocky 5 and believe its the best sequel to the original. Not a popular opinion but I love it.
They don't need a pretty face to be Bond. They need a ruff looking ass kicker character. Not a familiar actor. Completely new. The series needs to get into real espionage spy thrillers, and this will be the new trend for James Bond. They will pack the theaters.
I'm a little tired of dragging up the old "CGI ruined this or that franchise" when referring to movies made decades ago. Raiders of the Lost Ark and Star Wars used cutting-edge special effects technology for the time. Yes, sets and stunts were largely practical, but that was the only way to do things. Miniatures and matte paintings were used extensively, and if CGI had been available at that time, you bet your ass they would have used it. It's a lazy argument.
I disagree with your take on Apollo Creed. I don’t think it’s as contrived as you think it is and here’s why, Arturo Gotti, and Irish Mickey Ward traded blows for 30 rounds just like Rocky and Apollo, and they became great friends after, Mickey Ward ended up retiring and Training Arturo Gotti as the two men became like brothers, also Sugar Ray Leonard, a real boxing champion, came out of retirement after being retired for five years in the 80s to face the champion marvelous Marvin Hagler, who was a certified killing machine at the time..people legitimately feared for Ray Leonard‘s life. Apollo creed ending up the way a lot of boxing fans thought ray would. I think that some of the Rocky sequels don’t get enough credit for their ability to showcase how art imitates life.
You spent more time crapping on 2-4 than picking apart 5. Entirely agree Rocky 5 was a massive letdown, but your takes on the three previous sequels didn't resonate with me, and I don't think they'll resonate with many others. Two-four are some of the most beloved sequels of all time. Five failed almost entirely because of Point 3. It was such an absurd plotline. Some subpar acting and some cartoonish characters didn't help. The plot line with the son could have been compelling, but as constituted, didn't seem genuine. Best part of the movie, IMO, was Rocky's flashback with Mickey. Thanks for posting!
It's funny I bought a boxed set of Rocky I-4 on VHS. Each tape had the preview for Rocky V and the preview looked really good so I was looking forward to seeing it. Glad I just watched on tape and didn't pay to see it.
Not agreeing with all these points.
Making Rocky poor in Rocky 5 was a big mistake 😅
from rags to riches to rags, not the happiest story but it happens in real life; also it made no sense how Rocky refused to do commercials in 5 to get back on top when he was back on skid row.
@@victormalyar9200yes, he refusing to do them was just a way to keep him poor so he had to move back to the old neighbourhood. It was a plot device, but bad story telling.
I love Rocky 4 but i agree killing off Apollo was overkill. Drago was already a decent villain and didn't need the extra heat, at the expense of removing a great character like Apollo from the Rocky universe.
JASON STATHAM MY CHOICE NEXT JAMES BOND, ACTOR WELL, WELL, HIS SKILLS ON MARTIAL ARTS, IS TRUE EVEN NO NEED OG A HIGH TECH. WEAPON HIS SKILLS, IS EXTRAORDINARY..... THATS MY COMMENT.....
JASON STATTHAM MY CHOICE NEXT JAMES EVEN NOT USING HIGH TECH. HIS SKILLS ON MARTIAL ARTS REALLY POTENTIAL! ! !
Shame because the idea for the story was in essence potentially very good. Sadly Rocky V was just poorly executed on many levels.
DONT UNDERSTAND WHY blacks and east indians WOULD WANT TO PLAY JAMES BOND? THEY COMPLAIN ABOUT BRITISH COLONALISM BUT THEN WANT TO PLAY A CHARACTER THAT HAS AND IS THE EPITOMY OF BRITISH GLOBAL COLONIZATION AND INFLUENCE. FOR A black or east indian to PLAY SUCH WOULD SEND A MESSAGE THAT DEEP DOWN THOSE GROUPS HAVE AN INFERIORITY COMPLEX AND WANT TO BE A PART OF THE "BRITISH EMPIRE". ENOUGH!
Henry Cavil no black Jbs
Tom hardy should be bond
Great video! Well thought out and concise!
Thank you. 🙏🏼 Glad you enjoyed it
It's official - Henry Cavill is the next James Bond. Oh Yeah! I've been waiting for this since Pierce Brosnan left (yes, I skipped Craig). Henry Cavill = James Bond .... HELL YES!
who ever will be ,i will continiu watch bond .
I tried watching it. I got about halfway and simply couldnt finish it because it was so boring. And honestly, that haircut never did Keanu any favours.
I wish they can redo the entire movies again and make part 4 👍
