This way of making knifes just feels wrong to watch. Seems very lazy...
Haha! Good one!
Nice job. 5160 is a great steel to use.
Thanks!
Try using the horn, and the flat face of your hammer to maximize effort? Just a thought.
Thanks. I’ve done that as well on other knives. I actually find this to work well when I’m trying to draw it out some and specifically, for this one I wanted a longer indention for a flat edge I’ll be adding later.
Can one use a bevel jig if not confident with free hand?
Yes. I don’t know about for a hollow grind but for a flat grind I do use a jig. Here is an earlier video showing me using one. th-cam.com/video/ZtpOspj4zYo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=g85RRkQflJJy6y3Z I’ve also used a couple if magnets to hold it while resting on an adjustable plate that I could tilt back. That’s in some of my early videos.
Interesting shape. 5160 is a great steel to use. Forge On!!!
Thanks! Yeah I definitely like working with it.
Maybe you can include a shot of the end result at the beginning of the video? It makes it so much easier to understand what you are doing.
Thanks, I completely forgot to change the default thumbnail. I just did.
Just found your channel nice work! Any advice on a beginner setup thinking about getting into bladesmithing
Sure! Thats really the main reason I started doing videos. I started off very inexpensively. I have a video (not at all exciting to watch I admit) that walks through my earlier tools. My first grinder was a 1x24” from Harbor Freight for, I think about $60. That and an angle grinder were my main tools. I started doing mostly stock removal and then learned more over time. I built my own forge for heat treating using plaster of Paris and sand and used a propane grass burning torch (not great but it worked). This is the video. I hope it is helpful. th-cam.com/video/oF1MJhg7IiA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uJZd1Bxn_jCwAaA7
Это самодельный нож?
Yes.
It not a knife but work of art. The crisp locking sound tells it all. Simple but highly tough work knife ❤
Thank you!
👍
I feel like it'd be more comfortable without the twist in the handle
It actually doesn’t feel too bad. Although I make other knives for actual use. These I just do for fun. I did have to re-twist counter-clockwise after what I showed. I find the direction of the twist feels better one direction versus the other depending on being left-handed or right-handed. But for sure, I don’t find being a metal handle nearly as comfortable anyway. And of course spikes aren’t a high carbon steel so not great for knives. Just good practice forging.
Why does every single person just twist the spike as the handle. Its a terrible handle. Just because the spike isn't the highest quality of steel doesn't mean you can use it to make something actually nice.
I can’t speak for others, but I make my other knives to be functional. I don’t use railroad spikes for that. I just do them for fun and to practice forging.
I mean English or Spanish
🎉 English
Nice job man! Spring steel is some incredibly durable stuff, especially good for long knives and swords (good heat treatment being crucial) . Hope to see more. :)
Thanks!
I like that set up I really need one
Thanks!
Not quite the dimensions and proportion I wanted but first time making this knife. I’ll finish it. But still good learning experience. Will add another video plus full video once it’s complete.
Great Work!!
Thanks!
It ain’t a garden tiller it’s a rotary hoe wheel that farmer’s use to break up the ground after planting soybeans in disked ground
Thanks. Yeah, I wasn’t familiar with it so did a search online and that’s what I came up with.
I’m no expert but I try to share some of what I’ve learned and do. When I started making knives I benefited a lot from others who posted videos.
But isn't it mild steel?
Anytime anyone gives me steel I worry about that (see pinned comment) but I figured these would probably be high carbon since it would have hit rocks and would have been hardened. It sparked tested well and I hardened a test piece just to check. Either way the customer still wanted it even if for display given the history behind it.
What kinda Robert Dinero would I have to push your way for you to make me a Tracker?
I actually have an order for one. Haven’t tried it yet. Will probably take a little practice to get it right. Depending on some specifics, probably $250.
Хорошая работа 👍 мне тоже нравятся малыши!
Thanks!
Железяка каленая вусмерть..по искре видно...отпустил бы её'так легче....
Nice
Thanks
I reheated and normalized it for three cycles after forging to relieve stress in it. Quench was good with no cracks and no warping. Tempered after the quench. Part 2 coming soon. This is a special order from a customer selling their family farm. This old rotary hoe and the wood I’ll be using for the scales came from the farm.
عالی عالی❤❤❤❤❤❤

Stunning 😍
Professional chef here. Beautiful work. If I could make one critique, get rid of that bolster. Eventually it will make contact with the board. As we tend to sharpen our knives more than most. Where can we purchase your knives?
That’s a good point. Thanks. Makes perfect sense. I mostly make other styles. These, I make to order. Best contact method for that is with c4customknives@gmail.com.
Когда-то по-видимому нормальный нож был потом сломался и его заточили
