So many years ago I read the book 'The Lives Of John Lennon' by Albert Goldman. As it is now, as it was then, it's regarded as nonsense BUT I got a song out it. The two bits of the book that stood out for me was Lennon's paranoia (the FBI and CIA were out to get him) and that, apparently, Yoko Ono was 'involved' with another man and was planning to divorce Lennon. Probably nonsense. The song wa...

UPDATE: MORE Limited Edition NONSENSE!!
Most of the Red and Blue remixes were rubbish. The early ones were mostly terrible, especially Please Please Me. They sound like there’s a veil in front of the music. Good idea to redo FAAB and RL. Time to bring in a new producer. Good analysis.
Thank you so much.
I don't care about gyles shitmixes. I like the real beatles mono and stereo original albums.
I like them all!! That said, I’m not buying the album is the original stereo mixes. Just Mono and Remixes.
I love your ramblings!! You make my day, Greetings from Australia.
Hello Australia!! Thank you!
I’d recommend listening to the 2015 mixes of Free As A Bird & Real Love. Giles did them and you can only hear them in the music videos on The Beatles’ TH-cam channel. John’s vocals aren’t Now And Then-level but they’re much less jarring than the original 90s mixes.
Yeah, they’re better…. but still not great. It’s funny… when it was released I thought it sounded amazing.
Who is Steve ? 😁
Steve is Steve!!
@@dinnerwithgreedo I would have bet ! 😁 Good video, by the way. As usual !
Thank you.
Yes, I wish they had included those new Beatles songs that we got back in 1994/1995, called Real Love and my favorite, Free As A Bird!
Still crap!..
I did buy the new red an blue played a couple of times but not now I have been fortunate enough to acquire the mono box set from a few years ago an that now is my preferred way to listen to the beatles music as for the single I loved it when it came out an still love it
I just keep thinking Helter Skelter sound of been included on the Blue Album .
Well yeah, given that they keep banging on about it being the ‘birth of heavy metal’.
From Revolver on the mixes have been 90% good. Not a fan of earlier mixes. There comes a point when you’re losing something of the original magic. Don’t like elevated drums. It was always very subtle in the mix and that was great.
I have no use for the new Red and Blue or Now and Then. N&T still sounds unfinished to me and I view it more as a pet project Paul wanted to release. The demo was really not much of a song and I thought he would add a bit more to it (but he actually took the best part out!). I do like Free as a Bird but not the other two songs. I don't like the production on Real Love. John as chipmunk.
There’s been quite a few people say about the bit missing from N&T…. but, to me at least, it wasn’t really that great. Maybe I need to hear it again.
Nonsense. It’s the Beatles
Great video Paul. It could only have been bettered with the inclusion of Steve plopping😂 I have no problem whatsoever with the remix of Walrus. John's vocal sounds better and more up front, Paul's bass probs like a big throbbing thing and is less buried and Giles fixed that terrible edit at the 'sitting in an English Garden' that has always been on the stereo but fine on the mono. This all gets ignored and people lose their shit (a bit like Steve) over the last 40 seconds because they cant hear the oompahs which isnt even the beatles singing. The love mix is also good. As for now and then, I still love it and looking forward to hearing Paul sing it live next month. My order of the new songs , which of course are beatles songs is 1. Free 2. Real love. 3 now and then. I like the other 2 better as songs but Now and Then is sonically superior to both and why they didnt remix them and stick them on the Blue I will never understand as the red and blue have every beatles single on them so there's no excuse
I think they should’ve remixed FAAB and RL and put it on the 12” vinyl of N&T (I think I said that at the time) ESPECIALLY considering the price!
😂😂 no one was asking for it but we all bought it. They know we will buy anything. As for the US stuff I reckon not that many will be sold here but they were certainly going for the US market which is way bigger, we were not really the target market.
Im surprised that the powers that be in charge of Mr McCartney, Mr Starr and the estates, haven’t brought out an updated "1" album to cash in......again.
There already was one!
@dinnerwithgreedo well, if there was, I'm unaware that there was.....as I've only seen the album that has 27 tracks on it....there's never been an updated version released with Now and Then on it.
I agree 1)FAAB, 2)NAT, 3)RL. Let’s have the old two remixed. For me, at least, the quality of the Red and the Blue was diluted a little by some of the added tracks. This is even more obvious on the LP versions. Hopefully Rubber Soul SDL next November, rather than a North Korean ‘65 box. I don’t have a problem with the Walrus Remix: I treat it as a ‘bonus’ track rather than a replacement to the original.
I’m rather looking forward to the North Korean albums 😂😂😂
@@dinnerwithgreedoit’s going for three dog currys on the state website.
I wanted the remixed & remastered Red & Blue! No one seems to realize they were the 50th anniversary issue.
They weren’t really advertised as such.
@@dinnerwithgreedo No they weren't, but the originals were released in 1973.
It was "too obvious" for them to have also upgraded "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love" at the same time using the new tech. They could have released all three "reunion" songs with a new outtake as a downloadable EP.
I’ve got a feeling it’s not as easy as we all think. Otherwise they would have done it….. right?
To me, those songs scream "cash grab" and aren't the Beatles.
@@wfranklin990 You're probably right BUT I also think they're just trying to keep the Beatles relevant. The Anthology series certainly did that.
In my opinion, the Red & Blue 'remixes' sound like the producer used more of an artistic licence rather than restraint. Whereas, the album remixes were more of a rebalancing exercise. For example, like centring the drums, deepening the bass guitar, creating a better stereo field etc...more in line with modern production conventions.
Yeah, that’s why I don’t mind I Am The Walrus (too much) coz I just see it as the 2023 version of that song. Old Brown Shoe however… that’s just not finished.
The song was garbage...the 1st beatles single i never will buy... the red and blue con job collection rehash is a joke... Apple just taking your money because they know their are plenty of u out there to fall for it
I liked the song but only bought it on CD because as you quite rightly allude to, Apple are taking Beatle fans for mugs.
This may have already been pointed out but I suspect the reason Bangla Desh is absent is because Dhani has confirmed a new remixed version of the Concert is in the works - including film I believe.
Yeah… I figured it out in the end. Makes sense too.
@dinnerwithgreedo Fair, now that is a product I AM excited about...
OK you asked....I'm old....that should tell you where I'm heading. I've never been interested in the remixes. I just think they're a cynical way to get more money out of the punter. Especially at the prices they're charging for the vinyl versions. Now and then....I've not played it in at least 10 months, so I expect it'll be consigned to history for me. Of the three singles since the end, the only one that still gets the occasional play is Free As A Bird. I know I may be missing out, but honestly, I've bought three versions of all the original albums ( the first lot of albums - then CDs - and the albums again....yes I was a fool to sell the first lot of LPs) and I've no desire to spend any more on them, remixed or not. And that's my grumpy outlook on the situation. But I wouldn't tell anyone else what to do - horses for courses. And besides...I could have made the biggest mistake by not getting the new versions..so who am I to talk?
You’re probably like many others. Have you heard the remixes though? Please consider checking them out (if you have not). Give the Sgt Pepper album a go. th-cam.com/video/QlgNMZnLsIQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=40lCOz3cSosdrtk5
@@dinnerwithgreedo Yes I have - i did think about buying the Sgt Pepper one, then listened to it, and then changed my mind.
Ha ha!! Fair enough!
I can not enjoy RL because of the vocal, too sped up. But the backing is beautiful.
NaT is beautiful
I still don’t like it uncle Paul 😁
Wait…. when did you start calling me Uncle?!?!
@ shit, did I say that out loud?
I liked N&T the thing that erked me the most was how they omitted the middle bridge as a song writter macca could have finished the lyrics. B&R i didnt get them
That really didn’t bother me. As a songwriter myself, sometimes you have to get rid of something that’s just not working. And maybe McCartney thought that bit didn’t work. And who knows, maybe that was the bit that made Harrison say the song was rubbish!!
@dinnerwithgreedo lol as a singer song writer you should do a video re writing the bridge
I knew when the nes Red & Blue released I’d only listen to once or twice and not go back. I’m not a listener of compilations. I always prefer the actual album. Even with the new mixes. I just get upset that the older albums don’t have the other songs done. As for Now and Then. I still really love it. It feels like I’ve known it for thirty years now and it’s just a good old classic member of their catalog. I agree they should do up Real Love and Free as a Bird the same way as N&T. Wish they would have just done that from the start. Issued it as an EP and then get Rubber Soul out.
When I re-listened to the Red Album… I just thought… Christ this is a good band. Even though I already know that… it was like a confirmation. So that’s how I see those compilations… a confirmation of their brilliance. And no other bands ‘best of’ can touch it.
@ that is so true. When I do listen to compilations of theirs I can see thinking that. But their main albums give me that vibe too. However I heard you mention the Love mixes several times. I love Love. Can’t get enough of listening to that one. But it is so different.
As maybe one o five people in the world I thiught the single Now and Then was a dirge of a song then and still do today. Nostalgia and athe video connected with the people but imo is simply is a very poor composition and dull. It has hardly been heard after the hype died down. A great song does not do that. It was never going to last the distance and that is a sign of an avrage or lower standard piece of music.
I hear it on the radio quite a lot!
Hi My view on Now And Then hasn't changed. It's still crap, as is Real Love. Free As A Bird is the best of these three, maybe because it was a novelty back then in 1995, but i don't consider them all three as Beatles singles. The 2023 remix of I Am The Walrus is a joke. My go-to versions of the Red and Blue are the seventies pressings or the 2017 SHM-CD pressings. The Red and Blue were my first Beatles vinyls back in 1976 that I got from my parents for my birthday, so for sentimental reasons, they are my favourites. Take care
Great comment. Thank you.
I loved Now and Then last year and still think it’s a great record and better then the other two post Beatle singers but as you say they might benefit from the same treatment as Now and Then. I don’t get people who say this was Lennon song not a Beatles songs towards the end of the Beatles they were all (apart from Ringo) bringing their own songs in for the group to work on the same as Now and Then. I think with the red and blue, I’m glad I have got them but the again I wouldn’t miss them if they hadn’t of been released. I think with the remixing it’s been hit and miss some great new mixes but some mixes look like they have had the rushed Friday afternoon treatment. I would have preferred if the whole 3 vinyl had been chronological listed like the CDs but it’s not the end of the world.
When it comes to the vinyl track listing, I think they were trying to be faithful to the original release. Let’s put it this way, if it was in the same order as the CD, there’d be people complaining about that.
They should not only clean up Free as a Bird and Real Love but also combine these with Now & Then on one vinyl or CD EP. I have the three songs already but would certainly buy that!
Well yes… but the Now & Then 12” should have had those tracks on (remixed).
@@dinnerwithgreedo I only buy CD's these days but you're probably right about the vinyl 12". Left off the CD release as well. Always a money reason for these decisions
@ unfortunately.
Ranking: 1) Real Love [easily the most melodic song John did not take with him to a studio -- George's guitars are stellar!!] 2) Now And Then [I miss George here!] 3) Free As A Bird Vocal upgrades for #1 and 3 above are long overdue! The Red album changed my life and I was definitely expecting a 50th Anniversary Celebration of some sort! I liked 'Now And Then' from day one, and I still haven't got bored of it! Amazing what Peter Jackson did with a mediocre cassette recording!
I think I need to revisit my rankings of these songs, as I ranked them off the top of my head. I think Free As A Bird sound the most Beatley though.
Totally agree with your post.
I still absolutely love Now & Then, it's the song that got me into the band so. but as for the Red and Blue albums, I prefer some tracks more than others. plus some sound muddy, especially She Loves You.
When listening to the album, She Loves You quality is a bit jarring as the songs that precede it sound better. But it’s to do with the source material.
@@dinnerwithgreedo you're not wrong, especially how they made it without the original master tape since it was thrown away; but I don't understand how the 2009 mix or even the 2015 mono mix sound even better
@@tuckerinnit_6059 I’ve not done this but, would it sound as bad if you played all those versions together?
@@dinnerwithgreedo what do you mean, like take all the versions and play them back to back or combine them into one singular track, or am I taking that the wrong way?
@ Back to back.
I'm in the minority, but, I liked 'Now & Then' upon release, and I still enjoy it a lot. I'm an Elliott Smith fan, and it sounds like an Elliott Smith composition performed by The Beatles. It's melancholy, but in the most beautiful way. My only real issue is that you have 2020s Paul vocals in the mix with Lennon's original demo vocal run through AI, but I don't really focus on that when I actually listen to the song. Is it a Beatles song? I'd say so, but I get why others don't feel that way. I don't have a problem with Paul and Ringo slapping The Beatles name on the track if they don't. I actually prefer 'Now & Then' to both 'Free as a Bird' and 'Real Love', but, again, I know I'm in the minority with that opinion.
I don’t think you’re in the minority. Unless we’re both in the minority 🤔 As far as I’m aware, Lennon’s vocals were not enhanced by AI. It was only used to separate his voice from the piano he was playing. I’m sure once separated they treated it like any other vocal (slapped some reverb on it). Yeah Paul’s warbley voice is very notible BUT it’s low enough in the mix to get away with it…. almost.
Giles Martin has stated he has a bit of Beatles burnout, I think it's time to let someone else have a go. I Am The Walrus got quite good surround mixes for the Beatles Anthology DVD and Magical Mystery Tour Blu-Ray. Some of Giles' Rubber Soul surround mixes are not bad, I'm looking forward to having the rest at some point. Overall I think Giles' Red and Blue mixes were a little better in surround than stereo but they could still be better. Now And Then has grown on me but I think not using the "I don't want to lose you" section was a mistake.
I believe they are equally as good as each other Maybe Now and Then my favorite but i enjoy all 3! And yes they should remix Real love and Free as a bird and also remix Anthology series picture quality and maybe add a number 4 Anthology then put Now and Then on that one! Who knows what Apple thinks anymore only time will tell! I hear The Capitol Mono Box set '64. Sounds really great! As for as Free as a bird Real love and Now and Then if Beatles songs Hell yeah they are Beatles songs If Paul says its a Beatles song then it's a Beatles song if Ringo says it's a Beatles songs then yes it is if Dhani Olivia Harrison says it is and Sean Ono Lennon and Yoko says it is then it is a Beatles song so yes it's The bloody Beatles shut up Like Paul said in Anthology it's The bloody White album It's The Beatles!
😂
"No.1's or No. 2's?".😂
Giles Martin has said that he wasn't that familiar with The Beatles music. It does show. We all notice things missing here and there; things that would pass him by completely.
I think the remixes of the albums have been great. It’s just some of the new remixes on the Red & Blue that sound unfinished.
Totally agree. Almost a naivety about some of them. Unforgivable that he removed the beautiful piano just prior to the guitar solo in Something, and the lingering Moog note at the end of Here Comes The Sun. And don't start me on the botched attempt at recreating the feeding back effect on the vocals in Paperback Writer.
@@dinnerwithgreedo Yes, although what they gain in detail and clarity, they do lose in 'punch'. When the needle hits the vinyl on an original 'Revolver'....! IMPACT!!!
@@michaelmcmac3485 Yes and it wouldn't have hurt Giles to have an expert geek in the room to offer insight, or just point out the obvious! I agree with Greedo about the britt2001b remixes on TH-cam. I also think that Lennon's missing bridge on 'Now & Then' is a terrible omission. McCartney would've had to write some of the absent lyrics and would never have been able to tackle those high notes......
No one asked for the American albums box set, but it still has more historical value than those unnecessary milquetoast remixes from George Martin's testicle discharge. "Now & Then" I could take or leave.
So… the remixes are not for preserving Beatles history. They’re to create a new audience. However… my new favourite word is ‘milquetoast’.
@@dinnerwithgreedo I doubt anyone who bought those remixes weren't already familiar with The Beatles. I'm going to start using "milquetoast" more often.
I personally would've preferred that they had done an Anthology boxset and included Now & Then on that than the updated Red & Blue. While I do appreciate the de-mixed and remixed tracks that hadn't been remixed as yet, I'd also prefer we focus on an album by album release than compilations.
Absolutely. I think you’re right. With new John vocals on those singles right?
@@dinnerwithgreedo Precisely. Using the same de-mixing technology to separate, clean up, and enhance the older recordings and vocals as well.
The atmos mixes of Red and Blue are great. The joy of Now and Then didn’t last for me. I’m glad it was released but I don’t see me going back to it very often.
Does the Atmos version of Old Brown Shoe have the missing riff?
@ I went back to your first video to understand exactly what you meant and yes the Atmos version has the guitar riff.
There was a compilation that had the james bond intro before Help. Was it the Red one? if so, is it still there on the re issue? The 64 Box Set is getting shredded.
It's on 70's and I think 80's US and Canadian pressings of The Red Album.
1 second ago is crazy
Yep… you got in there quick too!!
I was born in the late fifties and first got into the Beatles by watching their cartoon show on Saturday mornings. Then I saw them perform Hey Jude on TV and I was hooked. It wasn't until a little over a year later but the first record I bought was the Hey Jude/Revolution single. I was just turning 12 at the time. Then there was an Ed Sullivan Beatles special in March 1970 where they showed clips from the film of them performing Two of Us and Let It Be. I was collecting the albums as fast as I could. I also started taking guitar lessons then and my teacher taught me a bunch of Beatles songs as I requested. That's the best I can remember for sure but things were a bit of a jumble as the Beatles were everywhere back then. I may have seen Paul play Yesterday on The Ed Sullivan Show in '65 but I'm not sure. There was also a time when I was with some other kids playing in this room and A Hard Day's Night was showing on TV and I really wanted everything to stop so I could watch it. That was probably in the late 60s. But I started my album collection when an aunt gave me a copy of Meet The Beatles (Capitol album), then I bought Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, Let It Be, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine and so on. BTW you said meat. Are you referring to Meat City?
"Thanks for that!". Love it.
😁
GREAT VIDEO!...as usual 11/11 xxx
Thank you!!
Good job. Fans will disagree and inject their fav songs. It’s tough but loads of fun. Kudos
Yeah… I was trying not to just choose my favourites. I was going for what would make a good album. There are some tracks I picked that I’m not a particular fan of.
Born in the Best year 1963 when music changed. Obviously I had heard Yellow Submarine in the sixties but not know who it was. Then Xmas 1970 or 71 I watched A Hard Days Night. The following Xmas was Help! So for a Xmas present for 1973 I wanted two songs Help and AHDN and my parents got me the red and blue albums and that was it. I couldn’t stop playing TheBeatles.
Yeah… those Red & Blue albums are a great way in. I wonder if they still have the same impact these days.
@ Hopefully the 2023 remixed editions maybe someone’s conversion to the fab 4
The brown inner is because the original album came with it.
Yeah…. but why not just make that the poly lined sleeve? Seems odd to have 2 sleeves.
@ Just making it truer to original. The polylined are better but I bet it don’t fit in brown inner sleeve. The super deluxe has polylined inners and separate paper outer sleeves. It would have been better with a proper album cover as polylined sleeves don’t quite fit.
@ Well this is what I’ve done. I’ve got a poly sleeve and I’ve put everything in the brown one. It all fits (just) and it’s now on the shelf.
(Love) Your take on things. I think you speak for all fans who want every album to be so much better (Than it actually is.) The triumph of hope (Over experience.) It's a (Beautiful) Thing.
Thank (you).

@@dinnerwithgreedoSo here’s the taste of music.. for me Extra Texture has something special!👌🏽
