Is this Leica's BIGGEST mistake?
I sort of accidentally bought a Leica CL special edition recently, and it reminded me how dang special the CL series of cameras were. I think that they might have been slightly ahead of their time before Leica discontinued the line, and if Leica had just stuck with it another year or two, they would competing for (massive) sales of the 'CL2' along with the Fuji X100Vi and Ricoh GRIII. This video talks about this topic, and also details the things I would love to see if Leica decides to undo this mistake, and to remake a CL2! Fingers crossed!!!!

I totally agree. ACB would have definitely used that or the smartphone, but I doubt Leica will push toward further miniaturization, as it might endanger the M franchise.
IBIS takes too much space, but a full frame sensor should be possible. I have never tried the CL myself, but I have the old Leica X1, and it is fantastic. It is the camera I bring with me when I need something small, inexpensive and with great image quality.
@@thomashilmersen711 I hear you, but Fuji got IBIS in the X100VI and the SL cameras have it, so do have to wonder if we might be at a point in micro-engineering/echnology where it’s possible.
Totally agree. My CL is one of my favorite cameras. And because it is small I take it everywhere.
@@joseespinosa619 exactly! The EDC/personal camera demand has come roaring back, and this might be the best of the bunch!
BORING......YAWN
Love my ZF. Rocking this pancake, the 40 f2, and also have a 24-120 f4, which is quite large on the ZF. I recently picked up an x100vi, so to avoid redundancy, I've been using the 26 a ton,
Nice! I'd be interested to hear how you are using the Zf vs. the Fuji!
Dope. Glad I found your channel. I'm a new-ish photographer with a ZF + x100VI. Love it
Welcome!! Let me know which of these accessories you end up using with your X100IV!
Fuji film making the XM-5 is not anything crazy it's just an upgrade to the XM-1....on the other hand the S9 is actually nuts! We have never seen a full frame compact camera like this that can go toe to toe with Fujifilm film simulation cameras and with a way better app in the lumix lab....stop being a bias fuji fan boy
IBIS is a game changer paired with a really good full frame sensor...this is the true Hybrid camera
@@henrysantiago5997 yeah, especially LUMIX stabilization. But I don’t think a hybrid must have stabilization, it’s just a really ‘nice to have’, again esp. when talking about Panny stabilization, which is def best in the biz.
I own the S9 and the fuji xv and the S9 has better film simulation as you can integrate 2 LUTS into a live scene
@@henrysantiago5997 I think you’ve got it a bit backwards- being able to turn off the LUTs is the S9’s advantage. It makes post-processing (where you can get exactly the look you want) one step easier than Fuji, where the sims are unfortunate baked in even to the RAWs. On the other hand, I think most people (beginners/enthusiasts) that want to get their look in camera will appreciate the much simpler Fuji FS method. I don’t imagine that most people doing their look in camera will want to stack, or even, load LUTs.
@MarcAdesso film simulation in Fuji is nice but limited to only a few while you can have 39 of your own or download other peoples LUTS on the S9. Most people owning these cameras will not work on post editing. These cameras are not for professional workers.
@ all true, but I guess my question is how many non-professionals will learn how to load LUTs, find all those LUTS, use them etc., it seems like less of an amateur solution and something more advanced people would want in a more advanced camera. Fuji makes it easy for beginners and make these beginner cameras. I just don’t totally understand what Panasonic was thinking in terms of target customer/market size with the S9. What’s your specific use case?
A joystick!?!? Thats not an advantage worth mentioning
@@henrysantiago5997 what makes you say that? I think pretty much every AF camera needs a joystick, it is so much more quick and accurate than a touch screen.
7:19 it makes sense to keep a consistent interface across the two Q3 variants. I know a few people who have both and I reckon there’d be massive complaints if they worked differently.
@@AdamHouston not sure if you’ve tried the new interface, but they are very similar. Just small improvements.
@MarcAdesso I had the Q3 28, and I have the Q3 43, so I am familiar with the interfaces. My comment related to your observation that Leica missed an opportunity to change the interface - but that would have been a massive error.
@ the new interface is only on the SL3, not on the Qs? Have you actually tried it?
You're welcome Leica... 🙂 a second shoe (cold or hot) would be good. Has any camera had 2 shoes? Or my preference would be a more utilitarian body live the Sony FX3 with 1/4 threaded bushes everywhere. Buuuuuut that doesn't fit Leica's lux segment..... Sigh. Keep laughing.
Thanks and will do!! Good question about the 2 hot shoes- I have a triple cold shoe adapter, and I know a few brands made a hot shoe extender cable, but not sure if I've ever seen a camera with double hot shoes- I wonder if someone else can comment if such a thing has ever existed?
Voightlander Z mount lenses
Yes, I talk about those at 2:48. I prefer the smaller size (and often better image quality) of the Leica M glass, although I understand the V-landers are wayyyy cheaper.
Is it really a fair comparison if you're not using Sony lenses on the Sony and Leica lenses on the Leica? The lens makes the image, not the camera.
@@seitch1 yes, that’s the exact point of this video- this is a comparison of two camera bodies, not camera lenses. Comparing Sony lenses to Leica lenses would be a different video, but could certainly be interesting. Especially since (if you watch this video all the way through) my conclusion is that the Sony and the Leica are either using the exact same sensor, or nearly identical sensors. I’m not even sure if Leica is needing to thin out the glass top layer for this sensor anymore for M lenses, like they did with the SL2 series.
Sweet video! And It was fersure a Sony A7RIV! not an RV due to the picture, video, s&q mode switch missing. I have an RV!
Ah cool, thanks for that clarification and good eye!!
In stead, I think they should make a thumb support passing through the hot shoe contacts.
@@kitther that’s a good idea too, although not sure if it’s possible (or at least possible to keep compact) from an engineering perspective!
First time I come across this channel and I love your style! Keep up the good work and happy new year!
I'd like a video centric, 20-50mm f/2...but it will be $2500 for Sony GM, so I can only hope for a Sigma / Tamron version, or from Viltrox who says they're going to make a zoom soon. We have the Tamron 20-40mm f/2.8 Di III VXD and the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art but neither of them gets the job done. And we really should be seeing some f/2 zoom lenses on APS-C, because you can usually make something a stop brighter if you make it a stop heavier, and the APS-C zooms are a stop lighter, but nobody makes an APS-C zoom that's a stop heavier and a stop brighter. While 14-35mm f/1.4 could be difficult, 14-35mm f/2 should be possible on APS-C, and easier to pull off than an FF version...it would only be equivalent to a 20-50mm f/2.8.
@@zyxyuv1650 only because Sony just came out with the 16-25 and 24-70 f/2.8s, I think you’re right, Sigma or another third party manufacturer would have to take up that cause!
i think 24-70 is always going to be more popular than 24-105 f2.8 because only a small amount of people would carry a 1kg lens just for those extra 35mm of reach. even the canon one doesnt have many users, its big, expensive and as i said, most people dont see the value. what sony needs to make is a shift lens, sure, its niche, but just like any professional camera brand, you need those lenses. only viable options we have are laowa 15 and 20mm shifts but it would be nice to get a first party optic. while they're at it lets update the 90mm macro because its getting old, especially with the recent tamron competitor being cheaper and better in some ways. 100mm STF is also falling behind, for such an interesting lens it doesnt deserve to be forgotten. maybe an update of it with a better aperture system would be nice. also, why not make a standard zoom similar to the tamron 17-50, maybe 20-60 f2.8, i would buy it for sure!
@@urbanie for what it’s worth, I’m pretty sure Laowa is coming out with high-end T/S lenses for E-mount in the next couple of months. I’m def intrigued by those!
@@MarcAdesso yeah but i think we're only getting 55mm and 100mm. they should make a 24mm or wider to compete with canons TS-E series. whats intriguing to me is laowa's aps-c zoom shift lens, its great.
@@urbanie right on! And yeah, 24mm must be the next one in the lineup, for so much architecture photography, that’d be a must.
I switched to Sony after 15+yrs of shooting Canon professionally. One of my top two reasons was lens selection/the lens roadmap that we will likely see over the next 4-5yrs. Canon releases lenses they want to sell and Sony releases lenses the consumer wants to buy. There is a difference. Canon has made some interesting decisions in recent years with the lens lineup in recent years. They seem to be shifting towards a video centric approach and losing a core photography focus. Probably one of the most clear example of what I've just described is the release of the RF 35L. Canon blocks 3rd parties, takes 5+years to release an L quality 35mm prime (which is a staple for photographers), and then puts out a very mediocre offering that has several video centric features and relies excessively on software correction for vignetting and distortion. You should instantly realize why they are blocking 3rd parties...Sigma would have blown this RF35L out of the water had they been given a chance. Canon knew this and wanted to hold it's users hostage by making it the only L quality 35mm option. They are low-key doing this with other lenses/focal ranges. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, so I stopped complaining and switched a year ago. I've not looked back.
@@occipitalexposure5059 I like the analogy about why the companies release lenses. I will say in fairness, I have no idea how it arrives at the final image, but the results from the Canon 35mm f/1.4 are cracking- right up there in quality with the Sony GM lens. But then again, the Sony 35 has been out for like 3 years already…
both great lenses but my favorite is the 80mm.... it's fast, the glass is top notch..
yep agreed...if it only it had the better AF too!
sony needs to update the 24-105 lens ....they need a new 28-135 f4 update for video ....and for sports shoots we need a 100-300 f2.8 lens
Amen!
The Leica SL glass is not a lot better than Sony’s G Master. They are honestly very similar in results and you would be hard press to tell the difference. Only if you are shooting the Sony wide open then you would notice a bokeh difference. But image quality wise there’s really no difference, plus the Sony lenses are a lot lighter. I love my M lenses and do think the SL is cool. But lens wise Sony has caught up ever since the 24 mm G master. I’m pretty sure it has something to do with the fact that they took one of leicas engineers not too long before that 😂
actually that's great. but it should swivel
I like that idea!
I have the M11P, Visoflex 2, thumb support and the SF40. I concur! But I doubt they will change any of these designs. It’s an M. Once you start building out, might as well choose another style of camera. Said in lighthearted fun. Love my toys and tinkering and choosing what config I want today. I don’t like the thumb support hitting me when I wear the camera. But sometimes I want it for certain situations.
Interesting idea. What are the chances Leica will follow?
@@astraeusone hopefully good- I know they have people that periodically do watch TH-cam videos, so you never know…
You have some problems with the sound in this video
hmmm, it sounds okay for me, both on headphones and through speakers- what problem did you run into?
So in your opinion, which is better between Meike and Zeiss?
Sony do sell a 10-20MM F4 lens, the SELP 1020 G. There is no direct Sony competitor to the Canon 24-105, but the Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 is, at least for me, the better option.
Unfortunately, that 10-20 is an APS-C lens. Sony actually has a couple of 10-20mm APS-C lenses, but that's a 15-30 in full frame FOV terms. I hear you on the Tamron lens, but I like to shoot wide, so personally prefer the extra range on the wide end= wish they'd make a 24-150, even if it would be a monster!
You’ve gone from the XT5 as an everyday carry to a £4 grand camera 😂
You can get them used for quite a bit less now...
Thank you for sharing JJC Lens hood!
For sure- thanks for the comment!
canon has a master plan of doing awesome lenses, but they need to allow third party
yeah, they are way over due for that move for sure!
Oh man! I had that dream reserved that I could use my HCD lenses with the synch speed off their leaf shutter, when I eventually grab a GFX. FYI, there's now an adapter for Mamiya 7 lenses to GFX. Can't wait to try that out too. Sadly it doesn't employ the leaf shutter, however. Love your videos :)
@@LieutenantLights if AF isn’t a big issue, you can have that dream now- I understand the H adapter works currently on the older models, including the original 100 and 100s. I’m actually thinking about down grading for this sole reason. I don’t own any Mamiya lenses, but now I’m tempted…
@MarcAdesso I'm very used to manual focusing, as it's currently all I own, though I sometimes borrow Canon Rf lenses for scenarios when manual focus is a challenge. I have all the Mamiya 7 lenses, so it'll be sweet. Downgrading would be crazy! Hahah I've done crazier things tho. Personally, I would love the grip with those massive HCD lenses, so a nice big GFX 100 might be ideal. The 50mp GFX 50s seems cool too tho. I would like to avoid 100mp as I fear I'll subsequently have to upgrade the rest of the pipeline... I think I'll buy the H adapter and borrow these bodies for a time to see what develops. Certainly they'll update the GFX 100 ii's firmware. You should write a letter to Fuji. We all should! Thanks for the reply
One crazier thing I did was have the focus mechanism of my HC 50-110 repaired by Hasselblad. Ouch! That cost me Canadian 3k :c. So I kinda want to be shooting it
@@LieutenantLights yes, let's start a letter writing campaign! haha I actually talked to one of Fuji's technical reps about this (brought the whole rig out and demonstrated the issue) the last time he was in town, and he said he ran it up the Fuji flagpole, so one can only hope!
I love the Tamron 35mm F1.4. It has beautiful rendering and sharpness even at 1.4. It’s stellar…have you tried it ?
Appreciate the comment! No, I haven't and don't see it upon a quick Google- do they (currently) make it for the Sony E-mount, or are you adapting, say, a Canon EF lens? If we're talking about the EF lens, then in that case I have tried it, and remember it being stellar for that era!
@ I shoot Nikon and the lens was made for f-mount so I use z mount adapter which works flawlessly….just ugly and bulky with the adapter but the results are worth it. The rendering really is special.
@@johndaubney7311 nice!

@@MarcAdessoI found them all on amazon.
@MarcAdesso Amazon search can be unpredictable. Try entering a search like this in Google: Amazon Jintu 27mm f/2.8 Also, sometimes a lens for Nikon is offered on the page that lists it for Sony. The Jintu 27mm for X mount is found as "choice B" on the page listing it for E mount.
I'm here playing with my sigma 105 1.4 lenses ' I own the lumix and Sony variants' thinking , who cares about what canon has. Also the 24 to 105 Sony is literally know for being awesome
I hear you, and will def have to try both of the lenses you mentioned!! But Canon's new 24-105 is f/2.8 (Sony's is f/4) and I don't think any other brand/manufacturer has a 10-20mm for full frame? In other words, really the only reason I care about what Canon is doing is that I want to see Sony cement being the undisputed leader on both the body/tech side AND the optics side!
i care about the awesome canon lenses
The Sony 24-105 f/4 is a very good lens! I have it and completely agree, it's one of the best 24-105 f/4 lenses. it also costs $1298 there is a Sigma 28-105 f/2.8 for $1499 whereas the Canon 24-105 f/2.8 is $2,999, double the cost of the Sigma for 4mm on the wide end. Laowa does make a 10-18mm for Sony E-mount, manual focus or Sony has a 12-24mm. I found way more holes in the Canon RF lens lineup than Sony, it's the main reason I choose Sony over Canon.
@@ironfur9150 I didn't know about the Laowa, as you said it's not AF and it's weirdly an f/4.5, so not exactly the same thing as teh Canon lens. BUT I am intrigued enough that I will likely try it if I ever come across a used copy. Have you gotten to try it? Also, I totally agree there are WAYYYYY more lens options with Sony, but would still be interested to hear what lenses you think Sony has that Canon doesn't, or the ones that matter specifically to you/your use case!
@@MarcAdesso For me there was a couple lenses that I was after. A wide bright prime for pictures/video of the northern lights. Sony has a 14mm f/1.8 and Sigma 14mm f/1.4 for E-mount. The closest for Canon is the 16mm f/2.8, neither as wide or bright as the Sony E-mount options. On the other end Sony has the Sigma 60-600mm lens, a very nice lens for birding and air shows. Canon has nothing with that 10X range between 60mm to 600mm. Also one of the widest rectilinear lenses available the Laowa 10 mm has AF with E-mount and Z-mount but AF disabled with RF-mount. I actually would have gotten the R6ii over the A7iv if the lens selection had been comparable.
very interested in this meike lens ! would like to see your opinion on outdoor shooting
Unfortunately, I returned the lens (because I have the Sony 55mm, not because I didn't think the lens wasn't great). My sense is that the lens hasn't modern coatings, so should be just fine for outdoor shooting conditions. For $330, if you are even on the fence, I say go for the lens!
So in your opinion, which is better between Meike and Zeiss?
Olympus?
Oh wow, yeah, I totally forgot Olympus/OM-system. The last Olympus I used was the Pen-F, so my answer would be that they could come out with a new version of that camera. What would yours be?
I agree. For me some of the best lenses to use on the ZF are Sony. Nikon glass like the 50mm 1.8s is amazingly sharp and renders beautifully but it's too big for the ZF. I wish Nikon and Sigma would put out small F2 lenses with an aperture wheel.
Amen! And really, it's that Nikon really needs to let Sigma make its little contemporary lenses for Z-mount!
I have the 40mm f2 and route the aperture to the focus ring. Not sure why this isn't an option. So, the exposure triangle is "at my fingertips"
@@aronaldharper543 that's a clever solution...except what do you do when you want to manually focus the lens?
Nice 😊
I personally use the 40mm F1.2 most often at F1.2. I find it to be quite sharp enough and people I shoot are often impressed with the amount of details resolved at F1.2. The only softness I see is when I get to minimum focus distance where the haze effect goes from being mild to being wild. Even then, it may have some artistic use, but I prefer to use F2 to F2.8 for super-close-ups, anyways as the depth of field at 30cm is really tiny. I have read actually about some hardcore vintage lens collectors whine about the 40mm F1.2 being too sharp wide open to be characterful. I personally say it is sharp enough for most uses, even creative landscapes.
@@EddySawaya8637 yeah, if you’re not comparing it next to a ripper of a sharpness like the APO, the 40 is plenty sharp for many uses!
I just took x2d profile from dng file exported from phocus, have to imrpove it little bit but it is extremely close already.
@@artjomkutuzov1350 could you elaborate a little? I’m not sure I follow- you mean that you created a profile in LR based on a X2D DNG file?
Also, unfortunately I don’t have many x2d and gfx files currently, If I would have more files from both camera Ideally in different lighting conditions + color charts, it would be much easier to make adjustments based on data rather than subjective perception. So far I think it is totally possible to make good profile for gfx so fewer adjustments will be needed. And ofc when I will be 95% done I will share it for free, now I am on 90% of progress unfortunately
@@artjomkutuzov1350 gotcha- let me know when done. Would love to see/hear about your whole process too!
Just to let you know, the camera comes without a hot shoe cover as standard.
Ah, good to know, I thought they started omitting the hot shoe cover with the SL3- thanks!
The thing about this camera is this …. It is all down to the user experience, on the SL2-S it’s wonderful. The camera is like a piece of art, it’s beautiful and it’s built like a tank on steroids, it is also cold to the touch because it’s so well made. The ergonomics are second to none, it feels fantastic in the hand, the button placements, the grip and the weight, heavy yes, but it never feels it. The EVF is to die for, it’s crystal clear and it immerses you in the scene, it’s perfection. And the AF for me in AFS is more than fine, it’s quick to acquire focus and it’s very accurate even in near darkness. This camera is simply a masterpiece. I have had many cameras from the great film cameras (Hasselblads/Pentax 67/Canon A1/Nikon FM/, digital cameras (Nikon, Canon, Fujifilm and Lumix) none of them can lace the SL2-S’s boots, I swear. The only camera that feels as good to hold is the Hasselblad X2D (my colleague has one). The SL2-S is a triumph in image quality and the feeling it gives you when you pick it up. In my opinion it’s the better alternative to an M, that takes me forever to acquire focus and I need to shoot everything above 125th. If you’re craving a Leica, seriously just get the SL2-S.
Thus is such a great comment! I have to say, my M cameras are in a bit of danger, as I indeed just keep reaching for the SL2-S!
Thanks for following up on this- the HC glass with leaf shutter is a great alternative for strobes
@@Agedwheel For sure- and I plan to keep on Fuji about it!
Very fun app to use. I’m now enjoying taking photos with my phone again.
Glad it's bringing the fun back!
I’d choose Hasselblad again and again to avoid all the editing hassle, haha! That's the beauty of it, it just nails it every time. Once I got introduced to the system in my studio work, there was no turning back. The colors are rich, the flash sync speed is incredible, and it's always as sharp as I need it to be.
@@gregm00re that’s great- for your use case, it sounds like Hassy can’t be beat! And yes, you’ll notice I’m editing to get Hassy colors, not the other way around haha
If I ever had a first Aid camera .. this is it. Great photos. Shoots video and is easily adaptable to any workflow. Can’t wait for the sl3s.
Amen!!
I just bought my 4th sl2-s like new for 1700..a steal perfect with sigma 50 1.2
whoa! that's a great price, I may start looking for a second one, and will be using that price as a benchmark. I also plan to rent the Sigma and compare it to the Leica 1.4. Any thoughts on whether the Lumix 1.4 should be in there too?
That is a steal, the cheapest used in the UK is £2400
I think it's a bit outrageous for people to be walking around a big city with a $10,000+ designer bag on their arm, you might as well hold up a "please rob me" sign. Secondly, I really don't feel sorry for these brands, they raise their prices at least twice a year, so basically they are driving any potential customers into buying fakes kislux
@@BladSpot yah, I think that’s part of the appeal of this ONA bag- it’s genuine leather, is understated, and isn’t a cheap knockoff- no Gucci or LV logo to be found anywhere! I also think it’s kind of nuts that Alan Schiller carries his Leica in a Bottega Venetia bag haha
