PFAFF 230 Automatic - From Frozen To Mobile But Needs More Work
I tried to get the Dial-A-Stitch mechanism to work, but failed for now.
But getting it up and running from a frozen state is worth talking about.
I really appreciate the patience given to me during this busy holiday season as a small business owner. And also during my big move.

Omg!
Please try charcoal briquettes. Yes, the same that you use on your barbecue. We put a few pieces in a throw-away plastic tray in our aging car and now the old car smell has been neutralized, gone. Good luck!
Beat hobby ever
My local thrift shops have squat. Looks like a coffin top Wheeler & Wilson, about in the middle? That would have been in my car in a heartbeat.
Bummer about your thrift shops. I really think I luck out because of older generations are downsizing and moving on in a high number in my area. (Seattle area) That W&W has been there for months too. They are asking $200 for it, which isn't bad considering what it is. I've just passed on it due to lack of room and trying to stick to my self imposed rule of collecting Singers and Pfaffs
It's interesting that your Goodwill finds tend to be similar to mine. Oddly enough, I've noticed machines mounted in tables with a full array of accessories often sell for less than the same ones in carry cases or even on their own with missing parts.
I've noticed that too. I've wondered if shops think it's more of a burden to buy machines in cabinets vs in cases.
Para que te dure más sin reparar, usa los discos que traen las mismas puntadas, ya que son de plástico,y los de la máquina son de acero.
I was just gifted my grandmothers featherweight and it’s the best gift I could have ever received!
I just got one for Christmas 2024 and no other present brought tears in my eyes.Although I feel like a cheater, I put my Bernina away and declare I fell in love at first sight with this incredible peace of art. Growing chickens is another thing I long for. I can't believe it was in Good will for just 39 bucks! We got it still cheap at 300. Is worth a fortune. Thank you for the video!
Yay for a great Christmas present. I would've welled up with tears too. I love this machine. Enjoy!

I recently acquired a 360. The light comes on. The motor runs as well. However, outside of those things, everything is stuck. Even the take up leaver is frozen and won’t move at all. Is that an indication that mines is frozen? I’ve been doing research and want to avoid taking it to a repair shop if I don’t have to. Any response would be greatly appreciated.
It sounds like it is "frozen" /"locked up". Good that it turns on though. Sounds like the motor is good. Many Pfaff's have the issue of a "gunk build up". I talk about it more in my very first Pfaff video: th-cam.com/video/FAYcdxU0oiE/w-d-xo.html Keeping in a warm room really helps. With some luck and patience you won't have to visit a repair shop with it. Good luck!
I bought this on Marketplace but the needle isn’t moving at all. When I turn the wheel, it doesn’t engage the needle even a little bit. Any recommendations?
Sorry I missed your comment here. Assuming you've done all the recommended oiling and greasing mentioned in the manual, I've honestly just found that heat and patience have been key to old Pfaffs. I have used heat guns to focus warmth in spots that I believed to be an issue.
So THATS how the machine is supposed to go in the table. I couldn’t find the answer when I intentionally tried before
Maybe you can try fixing your 401a again, it's worth the effort. I have one that works great & it's a pleasure to use. Makes my sewing a no stress zone! 😃
I definitely plan on it. I have one working one and two waiting for me to revive them. I unfortunately have to put them on pause since I am in the middle of a move. But I will definitely get back to this.
That tension mechanism is really peculiar. On most machines I've seen that have a checkspring with a downward facing tail, the thread will go through the tension discs, then over a hook, then under the checkspring and up to the take-up lever (on machines with an upward facing tail, the thread goes directly from the tension discs over the checkspring, but then under a hook before going up to the take-up lever). Looking at the service manual for this machine, it seems like an upgraded tension mechanism was released at some point that had that hook integrated into a cup that sat in front of the tension discs (a very standard design where pulling the thread straight upwards catches it in the hook), but you've got the older style mechanism where that hook just doesn't exist at all. How very odd.
Hi I had a Pfaff 260 for over 54years.My husband bought me the beautiful machine.Gave it away recently. Cape Town. South Africa
I am thinking grow up , because I grew up with PHAFF😂, if I need info , I need PHAFF! If I seek ingenuity I seek my ifs' as PHAFF'; yes I am opinionated take a back seat and begin!
I found the ultimate deal! I paid $10 for mine with the cabinet. It runs beautifully! I want to learn free motion sewing as well so I can wait to see that video from you! Can I ask what foot you got for that?
Whoa! What an amazing deal! Congratulations!!! I"ve tinkered a bit and I'm starting to have fun with it. The foot I bought is this one: (no affiliation) www.quilters-connection.com/shop/Singer-301-Parts/301-Presser-Feet--Accessories/p/OpenDarning-Foot-Slant-Shank-x23601817.htm
Love this as I am a vintage classic 57 model. And I’m still running strong, ❤ I’ve earned every wrinkle and grey hair.❤
I'm not quite the vintage classic as you are but I feel the same about my skin and hair too. I feel very lucky.
So cool. I l9ve everything vintage.. Happy Holidays to you ❤
Happy Holidays to you too! 😊
Love these original ads!
Wonderful informative video! These vintage Pfaffs are great machines, I just restored a Standard 332, no fancy stitches. You are right about the factory coating which can harden up in these machines over time. The reason Pfaffs and Berninas freeze up easily if not used frequently is due to the very exact, tight tolerances when they were made, which also sets them apart as excellent quality machines. Enjoy!
That needle threader tool looks like it functions exactly like the one on my mid -90s Pfaff. I had no idea the design had been around that long!
My 332 Automatic was intimidating in the beginning; like you've said there's so many dials you need to familiarize yourself with in order to know how to combine them to get what you want. I'll also be honest I'm not looking forward to the day when I have to open it up for "surgery" 😵💫 Germans made a lot of great quality yet complex machinery back then. I personally find it very satisfying to see older machines looking rough and crusty yet still sewing like a champ, so this video suits me just fine lol.
I joke that working on the old PFAFFs is like getting into a serious relationship. So many details and ways of doing things with those machines. :)
Hi Thea,, nice pfaff,,,and love your Christmas dress, and I want to compliment you on your very professionally done demo of the machine. And I m just getting into the free motion quilting side of things, I think it takes a lot of practice!
My Dial a Stitch does not work because someone took it out to fix the frozen issue, and there are innards that MUST be in certain locations before it's reinstalled. My service manual tells me, but without pictures to reference, it'll be difficult, so I'm living with straight/zig zag functions. Don't say "take it to the Pfaff dealer" because I did to get the zig zag to work and they tried to tell me they couldn't figure it out and "did I want to just leave it?" I think they wanted to take it from me because it was PRISTINE and looked like brand new. I fixed the zig zag myself.
100% - taking out the Dial-A-Stitch component you have to make sure you remove and replace it back correctly. I've worked on a similar PFAFF with the same component. It can be difficult. I'm hoping with use, this one will work free, so I don't have to take it apart. I honestly would never say take it to the dealer. Most actually wouldn't know what to do with a machine this old in my experience. :) Good on you for getting the zig zag to work again. I hope you'll be able to get your Dial-A-Stitch working too!
"Want to just leave it?" Yeah, that sounds suspicious. I'd rather mine sit on my shelf broken but fun to look at, rather than have someone potentially try to thieve it away from me.
Super beautiful PFAFF Thea ♥️🧵♥️🧵Glenn
I’ve recently acquired a Singer 320 and love it it is now my go to machine
You can color me envious. I have about 40 machines and zero Pfaff. I've had a few with sort of sticky controls. Keeping oil on them, using the machine and just trying them from time to time freed them up. I think it's the vibration from using it that helps work the oil in over time. Very nice save. Oh, and try the word "conserve" for what you do.
No Pfaff's? I know they can be harder to find. I always leaned towards them because that's what Nancy Zieman used. I loved watching her. I agree, the vibration from movement really works the oil through. This has been the case for all four of my old Pfaff's particularly. Patience, oil and time on those for sure. Conserve is a great descriptor. I like that. :)
Very nice!
Love it, great job!
How much was it and did it run well?
All details are in a follow up video. th-cam.com/video/-0wbvo4LG-Q/w-d-xo.html
I have a couple of these and I love them!
I found a white featherweight at a very high-priced vintage store in NY with an $85 price tag. I could not believe it and I actually thought it could not be a featherweight so I did not buy it or look further when I saw the price. I tried to call my friend who has always told me to look out for these machines. I had no service so I took some photos. Showed them to her and went back the next morning and bought it with my own start the car scenario with my husband. It is a wonderful machine and I am using it to make a quilt for the first time. Congrats on your find.
Aww! How awesome! Congrats on your find!!!

Hi I really hope you can help me, I have singer 306k vintage its serial number reads 1939, but it is also not an electrical machine it has the solid wooden table with the steel peddles attached to the table i have been searching everywhere for information on this specific machine but i am not even finding pictures that remotely comes close to it and then when i do the machines do not read made in great britain like mine does, i am looking for the value on this machine, can you assist me please??
Very cute dress! Hope you are able to get your machine up and running soon. My first featherweight just arrived from salvation army online. Machine is in good condition and runs! just needs a little TLC. The case is another story. Missing wooden panels in the base so i have to repair it.
I used a pair of tweezers to hold the b-b on the replacement handle. You might consider gifting the machine to your daughter to get her started enjoying what you like.
Continue operating it in that manner and you will burn out the poor straining motor...
What do you mean by that? This machine was locked up when I got it and it is freely moving and sewing quite well now.
Yeah, I'd agree it's straining at start up. If it spins free and easy with the belt off, I think the controller or motor need some attention.
I don't mean to sound negative, I like your videos and think you do a great job. There's just a little grunt right there at start up.
I totally didn't/don't take comments like that negatively. I don't know everything nor do I have decades of experience under my belt with VSM repair. I appreciate all feedback. I wonder if the sound you are referring to is just it sounding strange through the microphone? The sound in the beginning is from my lightly applying pressure on the pedal to sew. I didn't feel any strain on struggle from the machine. Like all old PFAFFs it wants to sew like a racehorse. Super interesting feedback on this little video. I appreciate it though and I will get better audio and visuals on this gal.
@@TheaStarr Cool. Yeah, it's hard judging from remote. If you can start it a little quicker and avoid that sound, maybe just play with it for a while and see if it changes. It may just be the microphone magnifying something.
Glad you have got it running!
i would have paid that especially because it still has the box , as much as you think its overpriced they only go up in value , they are getting harder and harder to find ...
For some collectibles, I would definitely pay up in person even if comps are lower elsewhere. This particular machine, just wasn't for me.
Does your 503's zigzag foot fit on this?
