WHF #47 | Saber Ridge 5.7 | Sequoia NP 4k
03:43 Start of the climb
Mo and I climb Saber Ridge 5.7 in Sequoia NP. What an amazing climb!! Check it out! If you enjoyed the video, please consider supporting via the link below!
buymeacoffee.com/cesarosrs
We started off at Crescent Meadows, hiked 17 miles~ to Tamarack Lake to make camp. ~7-8 hours hiking
Day two we started around 0530 and approached Saber Ridge, hit the base by around 0715. We only roped up once we were on the ridge proper. Hit the summit by around noon. Then we went back to camp, swam, ate, broke down the tent and hiked out to Bearpaw Meadows campground by 7pm.
Out and on the road home by late morning the third day.
We also saw multiple bears and deer. Pretty cool!

    Hello Cesar, nice spot! It seems to be great & fun for beginners, family and kids. Nice and safe for top roping and rappelling. Is there any metal-bolt anchor at the top? if so, I just need a couple of carabiners/tubular rope for the anchor, right? Any other 5.0-5.3 spots in JT that you recommend? Thanks Cesar in advance for your feedback!!!

    • @wildernesshomefilms
      @wildernesshomefilms ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey again, This is Bear Island, it is a bit of a walk by Joshua Tree standards, about a mile of even terrain. There are about 4-5 routes there 5.0-5.5 of which I think two have bolted anchors still. The rest may require building them with gear. Another popular spot is Trashcan Rock at the quail springs turn out. It’s right outside of the parking lot which is convenient. Many 5.0-5.5s on its west face. All of them require scrambling around the climbers left side in order to build your own anchors-no bolts. If this is your first outing using gear to build anchors in JT and you aren’t going with someone with more experience and proficiency, I recommend hiring a guide for at least the first day. Joshua Tree has a reputation of being difficult to access for newer climbers. It’ll help give you and your family a better overall experience.

      @@wildernesshomefilms Hello Cesar, we'll probably start doing something easy, like pothole rock, sweaty pie and maybe bear island. Not a big deal, but fun for the family. Then along the year, we'll explore other places for climbing in combination with some rock climbing at the Gym. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your replies and inspiring others to go out and enjoy life as old times.

  • @carpetcleaning7478

    What type of gear do you recommend for building anchors? What are the most common/useful of them? I'm planning to purchase some... Thanks!

    • @wildernesshomefilms
      @wildernesshomefilms ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s a ton of ways to build an anchor safely. I recommend you stick to one of the more common and easy to inspect versions for now. Starting out I recommend carrying a looped cordellete tied together with a double fisherman’s. Maybe 18ft or so in length untied. Clip each piece and then pull down into a master point. Carry around a double shoulder length sling as well in case you want to build something that needs less material. Depending on the application: 7mm-8mm cord if you’re top roping (thicker so it’s abrasive resistant when you’re not watching it, but this issue is kind of location dependent) 6mm cord if you’ll be present at the belay station on a multipitch (we can safely be thinner and lighter because we’ll be watching for abrasion) two lockers if you’re top roping at a crag one locker if you’re multipitch climbing for you to tie in directly. Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you have more questions and we can go over it.

    • @wildernesshomefilms
      @wildernesshomefilms ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to help! Knowing you’ll be going with kids to JT here’s a couple more points if you’d like to read: A common approach for many newer parties with kids setting up top ropes, without leading the route first, is to take a dedicated static rope (10-15m long) to help sling boulders as parts of the anchor. It tends to be easier to build anchors that way in JT at some of the more popular entry level areas. A lot of the route climbing will not be similar in form or technique to those found at most gyms so just be ready to ease into it. Have fun!

    I spend 15-20 years climbing at Suicide and Tahquitz, but stopped many years ago. I never did the Tough because it was too easy to waste a 200+ mile round trip drive to climb it when there were so many climbs to pick from. Now, at 63 years old with a wide ass, two fake hips and a leg that doesn't work right any more, the Trough might be a new goal for my 65th birthday. Kind of like doing the Vampire when you are in your 20's or 30's. (The Vampire is on the exposed face to the left of the Trough, by the way.) I still have the pro I would need and I can get my harness on. But I don't have a climbing rope that isn't at least 25 years old honestly shouldn't even free solo 5.1 and .
